One of Parkening's Finest.......2007-01-16

A beautiful and contemplative solo guitar recording of hymns, spirituals and other sacred works such as Mozart's Laudate Dominum and Humperdinck's Evening Prayer. Parkening is in exceptional form, the transcriptions are superb, and the recording itself is of the highest quality. Little wonder this has been an enduring classic since its release in the early 1980s.

Christopher Parkening is the most musically inventive person playing the classical guitar today; you must purchase this CD if you haven't already. It contains exquisitely beautiful hymns & sacred music (arranged perfectly for guitar, I might add) along with Mr. Parkenings masterful transcriptions of works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Humperdinck.

Above all, this is music that glorifies God and that was the ultimate purpose of creating this CD.

Classsical guitar is among the top forms of music and Christopher Parkeniong is one of the greatestartists in this genre, if not the best. I had despaired at ever findinding the CD "Simple Pleasures" and was so very pleased to locate it . I am so enjoying it now. I will be back for more as funds permit.

This was one of the first CD's I purchased back in 1988, and I bought it on a whim. Of the hundreds of CD's I now own, including many genres, this one remains in my list of top 10 favorites for a number of reasons.

1. Mr. Parkening plays every song on it with remarkable technical excellence and clearly discernible passion.
2. It includes classical, folksy, and reflective material, which could create a rough flow, but Mr. Parkening moves deftly from mood to mood leaving the listener with a sense of seamless transitions.
3. Although the songs on it are all religious classics they are played without pretense, which makes it accessible to any listener and uplifting for those seeking spiritual refreshment.

In closing, the is one thing "wrong" with this CD is it's too short!

This treasure chest holds such jewels! The cd rushes in with the joyous energy of Bach's Praludium, allows you to reflect and catch your breath on Pritchard's Hyfrydol and Variation, and flows forward with the grace and underlying passion that makes this a precious favorite.

I have many CD's of hymns that I listen to when I'm going to sleep at night. This one is not as calming at times as some of the others that I have. Nevertheless, it has many of the "old favorites" and worth buying, just for that reason.

If you want some worship music that is lite and relaxing than I highly recommended this. This is a very nice hymn collection. I don't think I will ever get tired of listening to this album. It will be a wise investment.
I play this on my 30gb zune player, both my desktop and notebook computer and of course in my car.

Great for meditating with Jesus the Christ, God the Father and the Holy Spirit. A must have for anyone seeking the Lord's presences and setting the atmosphere, which is crucial. For Psalm 100 says it all with focus on verse 4. God bless you!

Beautiful hymn arrangements.......2005-12-11

I had the opportunity to listen to excerpts on another website and decided to buy this for a Christmas gift. As a musician myself I have extremely high standards and found these arrangements beautiful and well done. It is refreshing to find an instrumental recording without voices. It is easy to relax and meditate on the words in your own mind without having to hear someone singing them.

The ever-popular vocal quartet 4Him has revisited their musical heritage with Hymns: A Place of Worship. This CD is an exceptional redefinition of some time-tested worship classics. Including 10 complete hymns and 4 interludes, these arrangements combine the rich hymn-song tradition with a contemporary music design. The members of 4Him found inspiration for this project by studying the composers and situations that gave birth to each of these hymns. This research brought them a new understanding of their spiritual roots, and as a result they were able to embrace the songs as their own. With a rock ballad version of "Oh Sacred Head, Now Wounded," a Beatle-esque rendition of "Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us," and a Middle Eastern-influenced "The Love of God," this is not another run-of-the-mill hymn CD in an already saturated market. I bought the CD for the song "Be Thou My Vision", which I heard on the radio. This arrangement is incredible. It brings new, inspired meaning to an old classic hymn.

What IS it with these guys?!?! They never cease to amaze!.......2005-12-09

It's one thing to arrange your own original music, but to arrange classic hymns and make THEM your own, is just downright skillful! This was a very pleasant surprise to me, and I figured, being 4HIM, it would be good. I simply LOVE what they did here! My all-time favorite hymn is my favorite scripture, "Great is Thy Faithfulness," and the arrangement on this one is really nice--very catchy. "All Creatures of Our God and King," (Oh that one's good!) "It is Well," (well, actually all of them!) are very well done. The straight, Sunday-morning service rendition of "There is a Fountain" is a sweet salute to those hymns that we Christians grew up with.

The printed lyrics weren't even necessary for this one--just find a hynmal! Another wonderful piece of work from this truly awesome foursome!

Hymns with a Pop Flavor.......2005-04-28

Christian artists releasing a collection of hymns is nothing new. Usually, they sound like a church service and, while good, I find they don't stand up to repeated listening. 4 Him avoided this trap by tweaking the hymns ever so slightly to fit their style. You'll still recognize them and be able to sign alone right away. But they won't sound like this in your church service.

The most strikingly different is "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded." It's got a pounding base that makes it a much more powerful and urgent song. And I like the third verse they include. I was only familiar with two before.

"The Sold Rock" also gets a nice boost with a slightly faster tempo that makes it fun to sing while keeping the theology of the lyrics.

"It Is Well" gets a quiet make over. The orchestra doesn't overwhelm the song at all and in some ways makes it more intimate. "Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us" and "All Creatures of Our God and King" are treated in the same way.

This is a unique take on a hymns project, and 4 Him carries it off well. I really should listen to it more then I do because every time I pull it out I remember just how much I love it.

The Mills Brothers make these hymns sparkle.......2001-02-23

This CD contians ten hymns by The Mills Brothers, all of them absolutely wonderful. However, I would like to single out two of the tracks as being the best versions of the respective songs that I have ever heard. "The Old Rugged Cross" is both aristically brilliant and spiritually inspiring. The arrangement is perfect for the song and the style of The Mills Brothers. The same goes for their amazing version of "Just a Closer Walk With Thee", which is not done in the typical overpaced style that the song is usually performed in, but is slowed down so that the power of the lyric comes through perfectly. These two and the other eight songs make for a terrifically inspiring time of worship.

I love the classic hymns, I Surrender All by Carman moves your whole entire being. I live 40 miles to the nearest town, I put this album in and I'm praising the Lord all the way to town. Where's Tait?.......2007-07-05

I ordered this CD specifically for Michael Tait's version of "How Great Thou Art" and when I received my CD, the song was not on there! I'm very disappointed. If you are ordering this CD, make sure Tait's song is on the CD!

Old tunes, new style.......2006-03-10

For years I have searched for a song that I knew as "Jesus Loves You - Alleluia style". When I bought this CD I had no clue that I would find it! It is known on this CD as "Amazing Grace" (it does have the beautiful alleluia part!).
The arrangements of the hymns could be passed off as songs written in the last 20 years. If you are into "contemporary" worship but also appreciate the rich heritage of the hymns then this is the CD for you.
This is one CD that may take up perminant residence in your CD player!

Just what I needed!.......2000-01-28

I thought this album was great - very well played and easy to sing to. I needed a "fill-in musician" for church while ours took a much needed vacation. This album worked great for that. The congregation was able to easily sing along.

Disappointing instrumental hymns.......1999-12-29

I was very disappointed with this instrumental collection of hymns. They all seem to be played by one person on a keyboard, although occasionally the keyboard is used to simulate more than one instrument. The playing is bland and without energy.

Not perfect but nice........2003-05-10

The orchestration is lush and sounds real (no string machine, not keyboards, not computers). The choir sounds full but the lower voices could be a bit louder - a problem with a lot of choirs.

The songs are all sacred classics and despite the fact they have been shortened, they're still uplifting and awesome.

Compared to a lot of hymn CDs, I've listented to or sampled, this one is great. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I wish I had read the other reviews (I'm not even sure if they were there, though) before I bought this CD, and now I can't return it because its been opened. As others have said, there are about 2 versus from each hymn, before going on to the next hymn. This is indeed a "medley" CD, not a full CD.

These hymns lack something..........2002-09-30

Maybe this should have been called, "Medley of 31 Classic Hymns."

This CD features the first chorus of 31 classic hymns, but don't expect the full length hymns. Each track consists of one (possibly two in some cases) chrous of each hymn, beautifully sung with an orchestra, and each track leads into the next, seamlessly.

Just wanted to warn anyone who might think they'll be getting 31 complete hymns.

It looks like several of the reviewers had the same reaction I did. Beautiful hymns, good arrangements, but rare to even get two verses from a hymn. How wonderful this could've been had the songs been unabridged on a two cd set.

This is more of a "sampler" album!.......2000-05-21

While I don't dislike this CD, I was disappointed that the hymns blend right into each other, without pause, with just a verse or chorus of each hymn. But, the performance is very majestic and reverent, so unlike contemporary worship today. However, you should know that it is an orchestra, and not an organ accompanying the choir. Also, there are no liner notes, so you have no idea who the choir and orchestra are, or even where it was recorded. I thought this was rather strange. Are they so ashamed of their performance that they don't want anyone knowing who they are? It wasn't that bad!
