Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. "Off the Grid," for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. More than 20 years since Licensed to Ill took a long, irreverent piss into the mainstream, it seems you can still fight for your right to party. --Jason Kirk

The Mix-Up is Beastie Boys' first-ever full album of all-new instrumental material. The follow-up to 2004's To The 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up features Diamond, Horovitz and Yauch back on drums, guitar and bass, with able assistance from Keyboard Money Mark and percussionist Alfredo Ortiz, on 12 brand new wordless, sample-less, scratchless originals. Sure to please fans of the instrumental cuts from Check Your Head and Ill Communication and the cult hit compilation album made up largely of those tracks, The In Sound From Way Out!, The Mix-Up finds NYC's favorite sons drawing on one of their arsenal's primary strengths and pushing it into bold new directions.

The CD from a rap band with no words..........2007-07-16
The Beasties have done it again. This is the album a lot of fans wanted- after hearing tastes of the band's musicianship on songs included in previous albums, one can finally hear the funky stylings of what has been one of the most progressive and influential bands of the last 20 years. Casual fans may not get it- for them, I suggest using it as background music for other activities. In that setting, the hooks may draw you in, or, at worst, you create a non-obtrusive atmosphere of funk driven by vintage street cred.
Actually, There is a "Mix-Up" Here..........2007-07-16
...somebody replaced the new Beastie Boys disc with a 1960's cheesy lounge record!
At least that's what it sounds like to this Beastie fan. I've bought all of their albums, but after one listen to the "Mix-Up," I'm going to have to leave this one on the shelf. The "5 Burroughs" album wasn't perfect but it was a step in the right direction (from the bizarre "Hello Nasty"), but this new "all instrumental" album is a bore to listen to. I think that some people will really like it--perhaps I'm just missing their sense of "irony".
three sets of listeners, three sets of reviews.......2007-07-14
More than likely you will fit into one of these three categories, each with a different take on this album:
1. You like the BB's as hip hop artists, especially the funny lyrics, and enjoy the old school beats. You like Hello Nasty and To the Five Boroughs more than Check Your Head. Chances are good that you won't care for this album---don't buy it.
2. Your favorite album is Check Your Head and you really like the funky instrumental interludes on that and other albums of that era. BUT, you are not an avid listener of funk/acid jazz and are not familiar with Medeski, Martin, and Wood, etc. You will probably like this album and should buy it.
3. You fit into Category 2 EXCEPT that you ARE familiar with MMW, recent collaborations by John Scofield, Grey Boy Allstars, etc. You will be disappointed in this album because it just doesn't measure up. Frankly, this album comes off as very amateurish and shows that, though the BB's have developed some chops, they can't pull off a full album of instrumentals. The interludes in Check Your Head were just that---interludes---and you can't support a full album on interlude music. Not being a hater---I love the BB's too---but check out any of Stanton Moore's albums and you will see exactly what I mean.
Listen to The Music not the critics........2007-07-10
Wow. Some of the reviews on this page leave my mouth agape with wonder. What in the world is so very wrong with this album? There are a few that are saying there's "no fun' in this record or the 'dynamic is gone'(whatever that means). What record are you listening to? To all of you naysayers I say Fooey and double Fooey! THIS ALBUM IS GREAT. It's a groovy little record period. But that's all it is. It doesn't have to be the next Sgt. Peppers or Paul's Boutique or whatever. You have to take a look at it on it's own. I will say this for this album, no other band is making music like this right now. This is completly original music. Why aren't these guys given the chance to grow and expand? If you don't like this album fine, whatever. Go listen to your 12" of Brass Monkey until your parents kick you out of the basement.
For those of you out there who want something a little groovy and different, get it. Meanwhile I'm going to mix myself a gimlet and listen to a great little combo called the Beastie Boys. Their new album is cool as hell.
Play this CD anytime........2007-07-10
Just put this CD on when you're not specifically trying to listen to music. Just let it play. It's fun, but can't be the center of attention like the Beastie's cds that you're used to. It's not all that entertaining to sit down and listen to (like when driving) even for a fan of jambands like myself, but it's the perfect album for anytime.

In the run-up to this, her third album, Joss Stone told a phalanx of glossy magazines that the difference between this disc and the two that preceded it was a newfound clarity of vision. Whereas the other records--their gold status notwithstanding--represented the fumblings of a huge-voiced kid being bossed around by experienced music-biz types, this one, she promised, would reveal the real her. Thus, the titular "introduction." To which anybody who spins the 14 groovy and fully unbuttoned tracks herein will wish to reply not "nice to meet you"--far too lame a sentiment for so fully realized a disc--but "Where have you been all my life?" As good as Joss Stone's previous efforts are, Introducing Joss Stone represents a giant step forward: there's a freshness to these songs that suits her age (19 as of the album's release) and a funkiness that suits modern pop sensibilities. There's also a cross-hatching of visions with artists like Lauryn Hill and Common that will rightly advance her reputation as an artist who can sling disco, R&B, and rock almost as convincingly as soul. Splicing girl-group harmonies with blaxploitation-style funk with Joplin-esque and, at times, Shelby Lynne-reminiscent vocals, Stone works these Raphael Saadiq-produced beats with the stealth and steadiness of a '70s-era legend who's still going strong. "Girl They Won't Believe It," she wails against the tight hoo-hoo harmonizing of talented backup singers on the opening track; get a load of how much she's accomplished in the space of three albums, and you won't believe it, either. --Tammy La Gorce

2 Song CD.......2007-07-17
There are two 5-star songs on this CD: "Tell Me What We're Gonna Do Now" and "Girl They Won't Believe It". The other songs bring this CD down to 4-stars.
Jossing Around.......2007-07-17
I think this is the 5th review I have written today, so I guess you will have to deal with the silly puns. What you don't have to deal with is some lame R&B album. Joss Stone is squarely on the map with this effort. Buy this thing baby!
She has a rich voice and knows how to turn a phrase. Her style is not indicative of Joss turning 20 this year. If she is this good now, I can't wait to see what she has produced over a 20 or more year career.
Get this one because it she has a lot to offer, and this I think is only the beginning.
Kevin
The girl has funk and soul!.......2007-07-17
I put the CD on at work and declined to tell anyone who was singing until it was over. They had never heard of her but they were fans now. They were all dancing in their seats and wanted to buy the CD! They did not imagine a 19 year old British girl singing with so much funk and soul.
This an ALBUM. You truly can listen and enjoy from beginning to end. It wasn't created to just release one or 2 hit singles. She just keeps getting better and better. Cant wait to see her in concert!
First, but not the last!.......2007-07-12
This is my first Joss stone album, but I0m sure it won't be the last.
Excellent music, warm voice, the right rithm to dance all the night.
Thanks Joss
I like this girl, and this album is good from 1st track to the last.......2007-07-09
The thing about amazon reviews is that in the end you'll never really know a CD, book or anything else until you listen to or read it for yourself. Though most of the reviews for this CD are positive, as is mine, I understand everyone doesn't have the same taste. With that said, I cannot believe some of the cruel and blatantly racists negative reviews. One guy seems more upset about her having a picture with a black guy on her album than any of the music. Others say she's "trying to be black". The white/black thing is obsurd. No matter how many stereotypes get blown away people still hold onto them. Jimi Hendrix, Eminem anyone. Someone else talked about her face not being as cute as Norah Jones??? Review the music will ya. This girl can sing, period. Maybe some of her lyrics aren't the deepest but she's only 20. Comparing her to Amy Winehouse makes no sense. Amy is Amy, Joss is Joss. I own both and think they're both good collections of songs, just different, because they are DIFFERENT PEOPLE! This CD is smooth, enjoyable, has great production and I look forward to more from her.

Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment. So the EMI brass were probably ecstatic when the singer took the job himself. He weeds through a dozen or so albums released since Volume 2's mile-marker, and adds a clutch of previously unavailable mixes, rarities, and live tracks. The result: a nearly two-and-a-half-hour, 31-track double-disc set as sprawling, eclectic, and tenacious as Morrison's vision and discography. From occasionally rambling but spirited duets with veterans Bobby "Blue" Bland, Junior Wells, Georgie Fame, Lonnie Donegan, B.B. King, the Chieftains, Ray Charles, and even Tom Jones to concert versions of hits such as "Moondance" and an impressive take on Sinatra's classic "That's Life," along with hidden gems like "Steal My Heart Away," this is a beautifully assembled and sequenced collection. It presents most of this multitalented auteur's facets and softens his often crusty exterior by showing his appreciation for the journeymen that helped develop the trail that Morrison then blazed in his own distinctive style. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description
The new 2-CD collection, compiled by Morrison himself, offers a comprehensive overview of his later material. The set's 31 tracks include previously unreleased collaborations with Tom Jones and Bobby Bland, as well as duets with John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and Ray Charles.
Customer Reviews:
Great selection.......2007-07-12
I won't call this definitive, but the collection's got some previously unreleased and seldom heard numbers that merit the price and hype. This is a very listenable CD that's something you can just stick in the changer and let it play. Definitely worth the money.
Continuing writers block.......2007-07-10
Despite having most of this already I paid out my money and what did I get? A reasonable overview with some obscurities, one of which "Blue and Green" is worth the cost on its own. While the music is all first class the compiling has created some jarring between tracks. I've always loved The Skiffle Sessions album but Lost John between Leaves Come Falling Down and Tupelo Honey sounds bizarre. Nearly all the tracks he has re-recorded are done better in their original incarnation and one gets the feeling that with this, the movie "best of" and the country abomination Pay The Devil before them that he has nothing to say at present. I love Morrison's music and sincerely hope there is more of it to come, its now been a fair number of years since there has been an album of original material and he is overdue for his muse to return.
The Legend Continues..........2007-07-04
This 'Best Of' is a must for any Vanatic (Van fan)... but more importantly it is a must for anyone who thinks Van's career ended in the 1970s... all the tracks on "Vol. 3" are from 1993-2005 - Van's later writing and singing are well represented on this compilation and with a superb supporting cast of John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Carl Perkins, Lonnie Donegan, Bobby "Blue" Bland and the great Georgie Fame as they come along for the journey...
Van is still a mighty force in a world that needs more soul and less pop.

Rock the gypsy in your soul.......2007-07-03
An amazing compilation of Van Morrison's enchanting and haunting melodies. Although I am not a big jazz or blues fan, he has managed to put those two elements together in a way that is a lyrical treat. The melodies are addictive and very catchy. As he has matured, his renditions of some of his earlier works are performed now with more conviction, passion, and confidence than ever before. Van is an extremely talented musician and lyricist that successfully impacts music for the ages. I could listen to Van Morrison 24/7.
Ancient Highway.......2007-06-29
Van is his element, you won't hear this almost 9 min track on
any broadcast radio station in the US.

Rank 'em how you like, Rubber Soul is an undeniable pivot point in the Fab Four's varied discography no matter where, or how, you first heard it. The album was softened up in its original 12-song American edition to jibe with the Dylan/Byrds folk-rock sound, as well as squeeze money from the Parlophone catalog. The 14-song U.K. edition--the version now available on compact disc--is a different, more dynamic, and ultimately more accomplished achievement. So many classics: "Drive My Car" and "Nowhere Man" (both omitted from the U.S. edition) merge the early combustible Beatifics to a burgeoning studio consciousness; "The Word" can be read as a pre-psych warning shot; the sitar-laden "Norwegian Wood" and the evocative "Girl" (the latter written on the last night of the sessions) stand as turning points in John Lennon's oeuvre. George finally emerges too, with the McGuinn-ish "If I Needed Someone." --Don Harrison
Customer Reviews:
A New Direction.......2007-07-02
Rubber Soul was very different in the approach and sound of the previous albums. Meet the Beatles, Please Please Me, etc were all good albums but for the most part it was just bubble gum music that teen girls ate up.
During the time of Rubber Soul, the guys were getting into differnt styles of music from their own. Bob Dylan was a huge influence on every artist after him, his writting influenced a new direction for John and Paul. Also like everyone else drugs creeped into play.
Drive My Car is a good opening track that is a good transition into this new sounding album. It's what kids in the suburbs expected. Norwegian Wood is basically the same thing as Bob Dylan's 4th Time Around with a sitar.
The other Songs like Nowhere Man are kind of surreal in the lyrics and singing of the three. John and Paul had similar songs in Michelle and Girl. Michelle has that smooth sound that's his bread and butter, and Girl is basically Johns version of the same song (in my opinion).
John always took more chances in his writting than Paul. Paul was a lot more commercial and was hesitant to do anything drastic. In My Life is my favorite track on the album and I think it's one of the best out of their whole catalog.
George and Ringo also have their time to shine. In Previous songs, Rino could only play the back beat cause if he tried anything else you couldn't hear it over the screaming girls. This new direction really gave him more freedom to fill the empty space of the songs. And George is always spot on with his playing. I love how he just seemed to stay true to himself after all the mania.
I look at Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper as almost like a trilogy. All three just have nice transitions that you can some how tell that that's the order they were released in. The maturaty in the lyrics, the new sounds incorporating new instruments and musicians.
Back to Rubber Soul... Overall it's one of my favorite albums of all time. It's definitely an album everyone should listen to. The songs are timeless and it sounds like nothing else. I love how the songs never go out of "style" I don't really believe one can slap a date on the music because it's revelant even today. There's always new generations discovering this music continuing the legacy of the Four Working Class Lads from Liverpool.
One of the first real albums.......2007-06-29
(4.5 stars, actually)
This album, which marks the beginning of The Beatles' middle period, is often cited as one of the first real albums. Prior to this, just about all albums consisted of a couple of big hits padded out with a lot of filler designed to boost sales for the popular singles on it. But here we have something which was consciously made as an album as opposed to just a haphazard collection of songs thrown together in no particular or special order. And although this album might not quite be up to their highest artistic level yet, there's no denying these songs show a huge maturity and step up from the type of pop they'd been doing for the past few years. Heavily influenced by pot and folk rock, this album paints a picture of a band whose transitional period from pop songs to more serious and mature recordings was pretty much over, with no going back.
I'm rather amused at all of the people who insist that this isn't the "real" RS but "only" the British version. The British version IS the real RS! From what I've heard, the American repackaging from Capitol probably did have a more consistently folksy feel, but it still wasn't the album The Beatles worked hard on making and meant for their fans to hear! As a second-generation Beatlemaniac, this, the genuine original untampered with version, is the one I'm familiar with; it would feel just as wrong to me to hear it starting with "I've Just Seen a Face" as it might for some nostalgic aging Boomer to hear it starting with "Drive My Car." And though there are a few songs not quite up to the overall level of quality (most particularly the junky closing number "Run for Your Life"), this album is pretty much near-perfect. The songs don't belong any other way. Although at least Capitol recognised how different and special this album was, and thus didn't do as much tampering as they usually did, and even retained the original title and cover.
Overall, this is a wonderful album to get mellowed out to, and a real snapshot in time, of that brief period when The Beatles had matured beyond cover songs and pop songs into more mature and serious artists, yet before they became as heavy and experimental as they did as the decade wore on. The songs range from soft slow songs like "In My Life" and "Michelle," to lighter poppier fare such as "You Won't See Me" and "Drive My Car," to rather deep and introspective songs such as "Girl" and "Think for Yourself," and everything in between. Probably the only major flaw with it is that it has to end with such a throwaway as "Run for Your Life." While not every song on even a great album has to be a winner, it just seems wrong for one of the weakest tracks to be placed at the very end, which kind of disrupts the nice folksy mood that had been set.
Nowhere Album.......2007-06-18
As some of you smarty-pants Beatles' historians might not be aware this is not the Beatles' Rubber Soul album. It is the U.K. version, which has MAJOR differences with the good ole USA version. If you want the USA version you can get it in the Capitol Albums vol.2 set. Then you can properly start listening to Rubber Soul with 'I've Just Seen A Face', which was one of their many hillbilly rags.
Classic Beatles.......2007-06-14
I love the Beatles, but this CD is definitely a necessary one for the enthusiast. The tracks show a change in Beatle's music from their 64 album "Meet the Beatles." The sounds are unique and with the advancement of sound technologies, can open up a new discovery of what the group did to their music. I do not think it is the best album they made, but I think it was a revolutionary one given the time they made it!!
Amazing..........2007-06-12
I am a kid and it may seem surprising to you that I listen to The Beatles (It also may be surprising that I'm not typing in poor grammer and abrevviations...no, my parents are not helping me write/type this ;) ), but I was exposed to music at a young age ( my dad played French Horn in the Orchestra).
The first time I heard The Beatles was from The Beatles 1 CD. I loved the CD, so my parents got me this album for Christmas, and I can safely say it is my favorite Christmas Gift ever.
If you don't already know, "Beatles 1" is organized chronoligically, so I began to understand how the Beatles started off as a simple Rock and Roll/ Blues/ Pop band and evolved to write slower and more complex music, quite possibly some of the best music ever recorded.
With this knowledge, I have to agree with the other people here. This is the album where the Beatles began to change. Listening to the first three tracks, you can already see it. "Drive My Car" is a rock tune with raspy lead vocals by Paul and an equally raspy back up by John. Norwegian Wood is a solo by John that sounds a lot like the later songs of the Beatles. If I am correct, it is the first time George used the Sitar, and it his preformance on the instrument that helps make the song.
The next song, "You won't See Me," combines both of the styles to make a song with a rock tempo, but with softer vocals by Paul, while John and George back him up with a chorus of "Ooooohs" and "lalalas" and other things, much like many of the later Beatle songs like "Hey Jude," or even like "Michelle," which is featured later on the album.
The rest of "Rubber Soul" follows the same pattern of Rock, then Slow, then a combination of both.
But wait, how can I forget Ringo? Yes, as you would expect, Ringo is excellent on all 14 tracks, but what did you expect?
I would say the three best songs on this album are "Wait," "In My Life," and "Think For Yourself," in that order. But don't get me wrong, all 14 of these songs are worth your time and money.
I haven't listened to many Beatles Albums ("Help!" and "Rubber Soul" are the only two I own that are from a record, not put together by record companies using some of their great hits), so I can't be sure considering I haven't heard very many songs off of Revolver and SGT Pepper, but I think this is probably one of their best. This is a must have for Beatle fans and a good starter for people new to the Fab Four.

Elliott Yamin's debut is so agreeable and well-executed it may well convert hardened R&B experts--the kind who'd normally distance themselves from a disc with a TV pedigree. With sincerity and a voice that vaults itself to places no talent-show contestant should be able to go, Yamin bares his soul here in a way that would do his hero, Donny Hathaway, proud. Tracks like "Take My Breath Away" and "You Are the One" find him twisting a wrench around love-stained lyrics; "I'm the Man" and "Find A Way" flow with hat-in-hand grace (and, in the case of the latter, a scat worthy of a vintage jazz stage); and opener "Movin' On" immortalizes the season five judges'-table words of Paula Abdul: Ellliott Yamin is "one funky white boy." As he proves with this five-star album, he is also among the most gifted artists ever to a turn a stint on the show into a recording career. --Tammy La Gorce

Elliott Yamin does not need synthesizer.......2007-07-16
I love Elliott Yamin and was pleased with this first cd but he does not need all of the electronic synthesizer effects on some of the cuts. I saw him in person singing these same songs and they were so much better with just a band behind him. I hope his next cd will be done more simply. Elliott is amazing and he should be appreciated in his pure form.

I really like the sound of Elliott Yamin's voice. It is very soothing. Every song does not sound the same - I like that.

As musical activists in the 1960s civil rights movement, the Staple Singers were powerful voices for equality and change. And more than 40 years after Pops's daughter Mavis spent a night in a West Memphis, Arkansas, jail at the behest of a racist cop, she still remembers the terror of the experience, as well as the counsel of Dr. Martin Luther King. That episode is at the centerpiece of "My Own Eyes," one of the most moving offerings on this collection of songs of racial struggle in the '50s and '60s, produced by guitarist Ry Cooder and featuring backing from the original Freedom Singers and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Throughout, the album proves both emotionally chilling and spiritually uplifting. On J.B. Lenoir's "Down in Mississippi" and Marshall Jones's "In the Mississippi River," for example, Cooder makes fine use of pounding percussion and snaky electric guitar to capture the danger and fear inherent in the Deep South at the time, while the title song and "Jesus Is on the Main Line" draw on gospel and the traditional framework of church hymns to promise positive solutions. Staples, who adlibs on several cuts, connecting the injustice of yesterday to the continuing marginalization of blacks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, remains a remarkable performer, employing a throaty sensuality that rises from a deep well of tremulous emotion. If her album is musically uneven at times, her artistry and strength continue to shine as undimmed beacons. --Alanna Nash

Album Description
From the liner notes, by John Lewis:
When I listen to this music, it takes me back. It takes me back to the red clay hills of Georgia, to the Black Belt of Alabama, and the Delta of Mississippi. It takes me back to the moans and groans and pains of an oppressed people yearning for freedom. It takes me back to the time when hundreds and thousands of us decided we were "sick and tired of being sick and tired," as Fannie Lou Hamer said. It takes me back to the days when ordinary people inspired by a dream decided to quench our hunger and thirst for justice in the fountains of mercy and love.
Back then, some people thought legalized segregation in America would never come to an end. But those of us in the Civil Rights Movement were inspired by a higher calling. And even if it cost us our very lives, "we weren't gone to let nobody turn us `round". We believed that the action of peace, the way of non-violence, and the power of love could overcome our oppression and remind our oppressors of their own humanity. Through the power of this faith our nation witnessed a non-violent revolution of values, a revolution of ideas that changed America forever.
The music you are listening to right now was the soul of that revolution. It was this music that gave us hope when it seemed like all hope was gone. It was the heartbeat of this music and its steady, reassuring message that bound us together as one solid force. So when we were beaten, arrested and jailed; when we stood together on picket lines or marched through the streets of the Deep South; when we faced the guns drawn, the billy clubs and the bullwhips raised; when we were teargassed, trampled by horses, or scattered by fire hoses, it was these songs that lifted us and pushed us to a higher place.
It is my hope that when you hear Mavis Staples, when you hear the Freedom Singers, and the other artists on this CD, that you too will be inspired. I hope this music will help you find the courage to stand up, speak up, and speak out and answer the call of your own conscience. It is my hope that this music will help you see what ordinary people with extraordinary vision can do when they decide they will never turn back.
Rep. John Lewis

We'll never turn back.......2007-07-05
I enjoyed this cd very much. I had listened to the Staples singers years ago and was glad to see Mavis recording again.
Mavis Staples rules.......2007-06-28
This is one fantastic recording. Mavis has a magnificent voice . . . perfect for the songs and full of depth and determination. The musicians notably ry cooder and back up singers are up to the task as well. Mavis let her light shine brightly!!
quafable but not transcendent.......2007-06-27
This is a solid album, similar in tone to the recent retreads by the Blind Boys of Alabama and John Hammond. The historical and emotional baggage it carries help one to listen with a sympathetic ear, and perhaps lend it more pathos than is earned strictly on aesthetic merits.
Yes and no.......2007-06-27
A tribute to the legacy of the Civil Rights movement and the Staple Singers themselves. Doesn't really live up to the hype, though. Mavis has still got the drive and passion, but her voice doesn't have the range and nuance.
Passion and soul.......2007-06-26
Mavis Staples sings with passion and true soul the songs of the Civil Rights movement on "We'll Never Turn Back". The CD has all the sounds of a great Ry Cooder CD too because he did arrangements of many of the songs and he plays on them too. This CD's version of "This Little Light of Mine" shows what can be done respectfully to bring a whole new sound to an old song. This CD really deserves 5 stars.

Back to Basics, Christina Aguilera's first disc in four years, refines and clarifies the--let's call it "sexy"--aura surrounding this platinum firebrand. Here, the best belter in a class that counts Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears on its roll call has turned her attention to love songs: the supercharged and ubiquitous first single "Ain't No Other Man," for one, and the hushed stunner "Save Me from Myself" for another. That doesn't mean she's foresworn being nasty, though. Dive deep into this set, past the gorgeous crackle that frames the old-school jazz-, blues-, and soul-inspired tracks on the first disc, and you'll reach a playful and familiar raunch; "Candyman" celebrates a "one-stop shop" who "makes the panties drop" to a boogie-woogie beat, and "Nasty Naughty Boy" sends out a heated, big-beated invitation to "sip on my champagne/Cause I'm gonna give you a little taste/Of the sugar below my waist." Thoughtful listeners should snap out of their fascination with Xtina's undiminished yet newly un-tramp-like sexuality, though, because what they'll really want to focus on throughout these 22 tracks is the honest-to-God artistry. While the rock producer Linda Perry helps disc two pop in interesting and unexpected ways (check the muffled blues number "I Got Trouble" and "Mercy on Me," an obvious nod to Fiona Apple), DJ Premier, a mainstay on Jay-Z and Nas projects, pipes a batch of aural high-fives into the nostalgia-bitten first disc (the deep-down funk of "Back in the Day," the strut-strut early hip-hop sound of "Still Dirrty"). Their nudges aside, though, Back to Basics is all Aguilera's baby--she executive-produced, and she's found herself artistically. Nobody would argue, in fact, if she swiveled around the chorus to "Ain't No Other Man," written for her husband, and aimed it at herself: "You got soul, you got class/You got style, you're bada--." --Tammy La Gorce

Still Growing As An Artist.......2007-07-17
Honestly, I have only listened to 2/3 of the double album set, but I have enjoyed every minute of what I have heard. Christina is a little dynamo and she brings it full force. It is ashamed that so many of the tracks on this album will be lost in the over play of Candyman and Ain't No Other Man on the radio. If you like pop music, this is a great addition to the 2006/2007 year's collection.
Back to Basics.......2007-07-11
Great CD. Love most of the songs. Some are OK, and real different.
Unexpected pleasure.......2007-07-05
I never thought I'd like any of these bubble-gum-pop stars, but I found myself really enjoying the songs on this CD. And I was pleasantly surprised by Aguilera's voice -- much better than the rest of the mouseketeer pack.
One of the greastest singers of all time.......2007-06-14
This album is fantastic. She is truley and talented musician and really sets herself apart form all of the rest. Keep on doing what your doing!
Christina is on Fire!.......2007-06-01
I've always been a fan of Christina Aguilera...She never "over does" her music. I think she decide to change her look and sound due to the ridiculous criticism she recived for the "Stripped/2002" album. I though that album was musically geinus. So that brings me to "Back to Basics/2006". I love this album, though it would have done her better to release it as a single album and the drop of two songs. I can listen to Disc 1 all day long, with songs like: Ain't No Other Man, Oh Mother, F.U.S.S. (which by the way means F**k You Scott Storch), On Our Way ect... She has definatley progressed as an artist and can't wait until her next album!
Favorite songs:
1. On Our Way
2. Without You
3. Still Dirrty
4. Oh Mother
5. F.U.S.S.
6. Ain't No Other Man

If Hollywood's marriage with pop music is too often a marketing-driven shotgun affair, there remain musicians whose artistry can't help but elevate whatever film project they're associated with. This 19-track compendium underscores that notion, gathering a career-spanning collection of the Irish rock-R&B legend's contributions to an eclectic body of films that stretches from Pope of Greenwich Village's effusive early solo hit "Jackie Wilson Said" to the unlikely live collaboration with Roger Waters on "Comfortably Numb" that seasons Martin Scorsese's Oscar-nominated The Departed. The collection serves as a concise primer to the high points of Van Morrison's mercurial career, from the gritty career-breakout hits ("Gloria," "Baby Please Don't Go") of his British Invasion band Them through such early solo touchstones as "Wild Night," "Brown Eyed Girl," "Domino," and the collection's fine, previously unreleased live version of "Moondance" from An American Werewolf in London. But, as tracks like "Wonderful Remark," "Bright Side of the Road," "Someone Like You," and his Chieftains collaboration "Irish Heartbeat" ably argue, it's also an invitation to explore less heralded, if equally seductive, corners of the singer's rich oeuvre. --Jerry McCulley

Brilliant Collection.......2007-07-13
Just got this in and it's a great collection. It pulls together some very famous Van performances (like Caravan from the Last Waltz) and mixes it up with his best studio efforts. It's great.
Van the Man at the Movies.......2007-07-10
As Michael Heatley notes in the excellent accompanying booklet, when Van came in at The Last Waltz, it kicked that last concert of The Band up a notch, and the ensuing energy never came back down. He has that effect and, I think, in general, helped the films his music accompanied, rather than the other way around. This compilation ranges from "Gloria" with Van's early band, Them, to a duet with Roger Waters on Pink Floyd's The Wall of "Comfortably Numb". The question is, however, how well does it hold up for general airtime in the CD player?
Quite well. If you already have The Best of Van Vols one and two CDs, you already have most of the best songs this disc leaves off. Heatley makes the choice of soundtrack songs for the films seem so much a matter of director's decision, that rather than lionizing them for what they did include, you wonder why they left off your favorites. Where's "Full Force Gale"? "When Will I Ever Learn (to Live in God)"? "And It Stoned Me"? One could go on and on. Change of tactic, therefore, to celebrate what is included rather than decry what is not.
This disc ranges over what might be considered the various Van periods, which are distinctive musically. Hungry For Your Love" comes from what Heatley calls the "often overlooked" Wavelength album, which hails from the era of horns and gospel vocal back-ups. Astral Weeks, yes, but I think Wavelength is one of Van's best albums ever. Some songs exist in alt/ live versions here, to good effect, as with the best known classics, "Domino", "Caravan". "Moondance" and "Into the Mystic". The studio versions are easily available but most fans will enjoy hearing the new takes. Van handles them confidently, and drops into his effortless live groove, slurring the words of "Into the Mystic" which, like these other songs, can survive any number of interpretations. "Bright Side of the Road" comes from another Wavelength era overlooked album, Into the Music, which unveiled the amazing "Full Force Gale", the latter conspicuous by its absence. '90s Van appears with the standout "Real Real Gone" and "Days Like These". Two songs will already be familiar to non- van fans, having been hits for John Cougar Mellencamp and Rod Stewart.
As I write, Van still hasn't gotten the Nobel Prize, although he's done more to bring enjoyment and harmony than almost anyone on the planet, with the possible exception of Mother Teresa, who already did get it, so it's Van's turn. But until that oversight is addressed, at least there's this compilation which shows he's not only raised the bar for music but also significantly improved the movies.
Absolutely awesome album.......2007-07-03
A great Van Morrison album for someone who really loves Van Morrison and his legendary sound. It's in my CD player all the time.

Experience Hendrix brings together the major singles with a stack of majestic album tracks and the career-defining live Woodstock version of "The Star Spangled Banner" on a fat 20-tracker. While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the CD (which supplants the short-lived Ultimate Experience collection) does hang together as a listen. Its blend of Hendrix the rocker and Hendrix the underrated soul man is suggestive, painting a picture of a multifaceted genius and transcending its plainly mercenary origins. In the end, its effect--like that of all Hendrix's best records--is to remind us of a Jimi very, very much alive. --Rickey Wright

Whole Hendrix.......2007-07-02
An excellent Hendrix compilation. All of the famous stuff still played on the radio is on here, as well as lesser-knowns. Definitely get this if a Hendrix fan. 20 tracks, over an hour of music. Great value.
Jimi Hendrix: A man whose spirit and music is immortal........2007-06-17
I don't know why I didn't review this album a long time ago. Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest artists in rock music, and the greatest guitarist of all time. He wasn't the fastest, but his music revolutionized so much music, and in the small amount of time he was around, as well. "Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix" is an essential piece of rock and roll. It's very accessable, literally in every store I've been in, and it only goes for ten dollars.
On this 20-song compilation, you get such popular tracks as "Purple Haze", "Fire", and Jimi's highest-charter, the timeless, Bob Dylan cover "All Along The Watchtower". Of course, Jimi was influenced by a variety of music, as he shows in the incredible blues stylings of "Red House" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return"). You have such trippy songs as the soul-influenced "Crosstown Traffic", a personal favorite, the somewhat-dirty and ever-groovy "Foxey Lady", the brilliant masterpiece, "If 6 Was 9" and the "it's-so-trippy-I-don't-know-what-to-say" work of art that is "Bold As Love". Then there's the eternal beauty of "Little Wing", the funky, post-humous, "Dolly Dagger" and his immortal genius of the Woodstock recording of "Star Spangled Banner". Of course, there are more than that, but this just goes to show what a musician Jimi Hendrix was!
All in all, an excellent collection that should belong in every classic rock fan's library. After this, you might wanna check out "Band of Gypsys", as it shows Jimi's stunning live work. Although artists like Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin may stir controversy, I always believe that it's what you personally think of the music. And I, for one, believe Jimi Hendrix's music is timeless, awesome and extremely influential. Hope you all love this one, peace!

These days, it seems anyone can make an R&B album. However, recording a soul album takes that special intangible element. The 17-year-old Devon, England, native first proved that she has it with The Soul Sessions, a collection of rare soul grooves. She does it here again with Mind, Body & Soul, her first album of original material. For those who thought that Stone could only interpret vintage ballads, witness the midtempo attitude of "Jet Lag." Backed by a thumping backbeat, Stone tells of a love of so all-encompassing that it is physically draining. On lead single, "You Had Me," Stone takes the persona of a woman done wrong with biting edge and a funky wah-wah guitar introduces her "get lost" sentiment over an infectious hook. Mind, Body & Soul also features a host of moving ballads that are reminiscent of the more downtempo fare characteristic of The Soul Sessions. The choir-backed "Security" is an organ-touched tale of love and support in the wake of tragedy. "Spoiled," a song Stone wrote with the legendary Lamont and Beau Dozier of Dozier-Holland-Dozier, is a romantically lush offering in which Stone's alto caresses the piano-driven arrangement. Other Mind, Body & Soul highlights include the hypnotic "Snakes & Ladders" and the roots reggae vibe of "Less Is More." While The Soul Sessions introduced Stone to the world, this album will make her placement in the soul canon undeniable. --Rashaun Hall

I liked every song!.......2007-07-10
This is Joss Stone's second album and I'm happy to say every song is good. I can't believe how talented she is. Her soulful vocals are the highlight of this album. I first heard Joss Stone on the radio with "Spoiled" and loved it. I was addicted to that song and it still remains to be my favorite song from the album. The first five or six songs are the best on the album but all of them are good. They're well written, well produced and well sung. If you have been curious about Joss Stone then I highly reccomend this album. I now am a Joss Stone fan. This is one of the best neo-soul albums since Heather Headley!
AMAAAZING!!.......2007-06-09
I loooooooooove this album. It's definitley the best of her three. The only songs I don't care for are "Understand" and "Sleep Like a Child". The rest are amazinggggg. Esp You Had Me, Right To Be Wrong, Jet Lag, Killing Time, Snakes and Ladders, Security, and Dontcha Wanna Ride.
When I heard Killing Time, I thought for sure it was a remake because it sounded like such a classic song. THen I looked it up and saw that Joss wrote it, AMAZING!

I have a thing for white soul singers. No offence intended to black soul singers, who are of course brilliant. It's just that I feel a very interesting and unique vibe when that rare white singer excels at this genre. It is a hybridization of spiritualities. And Joss Stone possesses amazing soul, incredible talent and rich personality. All this at the tender age of 17 when she recorded this album (she's now 19). It's mind-boggling to imagine how much better she can still become.
'Mind, Body and Soul' is a bit of a paradox. It is raw, yet perfect: its youthful rawness itself is very charming. What I ask of listeners is to give it time. The songs are generally very simple, a throwback to the days when music (and life) was simpler and more sincere. Because some of these songs lack a catchy hook and seem so simple, you might not like them at first listen. But have a bit of that patience that music fans used to have, and you might find that the simplicity is accompanied by great sincerity and feeling. It is such a refreshing change in the 21st century to hear music that is simply good and heartfelt, with no stunts.
The songs that most people will like quickly are 'Right to be Wrong' (fabulous musicianship and lyrics), 'Spoiled' (richly sentimental and lush), and 'Jet Lag' (fun). But after about 5-7 patient listens, you might find that every song has the capacity to charm you and connect you with this young genius. The songs that grew most on me were 'Security' (beautifully sincere, stirring, pretty in its idealism) , 'Young at Heart' (youthful idealism and defiance), 'Snakes and Ladders' (energetically soulful), 'Understand' (very relaxed and really fun), 'Don't Know How' (classic-sounding) and 'Sleep like a Child' (tender night song).
The icing on the cake comes with the hidden track at the end. Joss unleashes her angsty side with an intensity and depth of feeling that are astounding for a fun-loving 17-year old.
Not since Vonda Shepard have I liked a white soul singer this much. Joss Stone is phenomenal for a 17-year old and is that rare kind of singer who can really move people deeply even though her vocal technique is still quite far from perfect. She makes up for it by singing straight from her amazing soul.

More of a good thing.......2007-05-31
Joss Stone continues with the formula that served her well in her first album, reaching back for some old school soul and putting her distinctive touch on it. There is a reason that some of the great artists and producers from the 60's and 70's have worked with her, they see that she has the gift to sing SOUL!!
Right to Be Wrong, Spoiled, Jet Lag, and Snakes and Ladders are just some of the highlights of this great album. The mix of songs shows her skill with dance tunes as well as slow jams.
There is absolutely no sophomore jinx here. If you really like soul, just listen to a couple of track samples and you will be hooked!
Stone's Continuation Toward Greatness.......2007-04-20
On "Mind, Body, and Soul," Joss Stone had to follow up her phenomenal first release, "The Soul Sessions," where she took old but mostly unknown R&B songs and reworked them with a magic touch and a magic voice. So the challenge was clear: was she going to be able to do a CD of newer material and capture listeners as she has with the previous release?
I think the answer is a resounding yes. This CD demonstrates that "The Soul Sessions" weren't a fluke and that Joss Stone sounds just as good singing today's soul as she does singing yesterday's soul. She has a voice that shames vocalists with twenty or thirty more years of living than she has, and she seems to do it effortlessly.
"Right To Be Wrong," "Jet Lag," "Don't Cha Wanna Ride," and the other songs on "Mind, Body, and Soul" just prove that Joss Stone has a wonderful career ahead of her.
