Just get it.......2003-08-14
After the release of two excellent albums ("Filth hounds of hades" and "Power of the hunter"), Ward and the Brabbs brother recruited a second guitar player - Mick Tucker - and recorded their third album titled "This means war". With this album, Tank continued their raw, unpolished but still melodic heavy metal. Even if the production could be better, there's plenty of enjoyable stuff here. "Just like something from hell", "Laughing in the face of death", "This means war", "Echoes of a distand battle" and "If we go (we go down fighting)" are all high class metal tunes from the eara of New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and if you are a fan of early Iron Maiden or Motorhead, my guess is that you might find this album irresistible. Get it and crank it up!
One of the best underground metal bands ever!.......2003-07-24
These guys are HEAVY! Springing from the late 70's/early 80's underground metal scene they were found in all of the purest's collections. When Metallica was still that little known band these guys were assaulting the senses of countless headbanging, beer-swilling ruffians. The first song of the album says it all, "Just like something from...hell." It is a relentless bounding of guitar, drum, and bass rythem. The title track, "This means war" contines in the same vein drving you into submission. Their multi-album theme of war and miltary makes Tank a great musical outlet for those seeking a hard-driving onslaught of power...I can't recommend them any more than I already have...a must have for anyone who loves pure, hard metal...

Customer Reviews:
Yeah.......2006-04-08
The energy and entertainment on this recording, combined with the period sound and ultimate striving make this a vigorously engaging listen.
It's not near perfect and that's just the point. Any mechanism that is aware of how thrown off things are isn't looking for perfection, baby, but is more prone to find themselves pulling and pushing out and here and there, and it's going to take some heart to energize the effort. Here, this band called Petra, mostly hidden from popular music (I think) because they sing about how great Jesus is, cranks out one deeply emotional, heart-wrenching moment in the form of ten songs.
Bob Hartman doesn't look anything close to a rock n' roller but my gosh does he have the heart and fingers for it. Most rock records, and I'm talking throughout the history of music here, settle down at some point and sometimes for far too long. It's rare when you find a cd where the band hits it hard on every song and, to me, that's what Petra almost does here (except for song 8). Throughout the album you get a sense that they are really 'going for it.' And this relentless pursuit of rock n' roll has a lot to do with Hartman (and the singer), a rare rock guitarist who'd just as soon play in his sweatpants and t-shirt as he would in a finely tailored, colorized clothing scheme.
And of all the great, memorable front men in rock n' roll, John Schlitt is one of the more unrecognized. He's a mixture of Rod Stewart, Brian Johnson (AC DC) and Cyndi Lauper, especially on this record, in which he uses his voice to both scream and articulate, sometimes in an up-front manner and other times when he's just another instrument (which I like). But there are countless sweet ways Schlitt rips it up with a vocal that hits notes which veer in different directions. One song after another, his vocal performance is unforgettable.
This does have a slight 'required taste' feel, though, and that's probably due to several subtle variables, such as constant synthesizer usage, background vocals that are just a litle bizarre and Schlitt's vocal being so intense. It just so happens that I like all three of these things but know that some will think differently.
For a medium supposedly as exciting as rock n' roll, it's surprising how much of it is boring (just turn on your local 'classic rock' station); when I meditate upon that fact, it makes This Means War all the more exhilirating and an album totally worth going back to. In other words, it isn't dull and includes elements missing from too much of what is claimed as 'classic' and 'good,' such as playfulness, sincere intensity, spiritual longing, and zealousness.
And when I ponder what they're singing about further, who would have knew, that the Holy spirit likes to rock n' roll too.
GOOD BUT NOT THE BEST PETRA .......2005-12-01
Like the the title says, this is a good album but overrated. It is not the heavy rock album most say it is. What it is however, is a good pop/rock album that is has some good songs on it. I always thought the title track "This Means War" would have sounded better without the High School Band doing the drums but make it more of a rock'n'roll song with the drummer really kicking in hard at the opening. This is obviously the way the producer/band thought was the best was to go for the album and most fans really like it. There are keyboards all over the place on this album and like another reviewer mentioned, they overshadow the guitar.
There are some essential Petra songs on this album. Examples are "He Came,He Saw,He Conquered" "Get On Your Knees And Fight Like A Man" "I Am Available" and the title track of course. Actually my favorite song on here is the last one "All The Kings Horses". It has a great intro and I thought this would make a good opening song for the album or a concert of Petra's.
Overall this is a good collection of Petra songs and I am sure most fans would call this album essential. I wouldn't go that far but some of the songs make it worth buying if you cannot find them on a compilation anywhere else. Don't misunderstand this review. I like the album but felt the band got better on their next release "On Fire". But as you may have already read, "This Means War" does show a much more confident band than "Back To The Street" and the energy level is high throughout the album.
Stand Out songs: "All The King's Horses" "He Came,He Saw,He conquered" "I Am Available" and "You Are My Rock"
Awesome!.......2005-05-04
From the pounding drums that start the title song "This Means War!" to the last song "All The King's Horses", this album rocks and is still my favorite Petra album. "He Came, He Saw, He Conquered" is an awesome song talking about Jesus dying and rising from the dead, plus the song absolutely rocks. "Kenaniah" is awesome song about a story from the old testament and rocks out. "You Are My Rock" is perhaps my favorite song on this album and I think is very underrated. John Schlitt does a great job with the vocals, the music is great and the message is very powerful about Jesus being our rock during all of the ups and downs of life. "The Water Is Alive" is a fun song to listen to and I like the message of this song as well about Christ quenching our thirsty hearts. To me "This Means War!" ranks just above "Beyond Belief" and rocks second only to "Jekyll and Hyde."
Sure it had that 1987 sound but I still love it as much today as I did when I first heard it back then.
Awesome album contrary to popular opinion!.......2004-10-12
The lyrics are excellent in this album. Petra does not sway from its mission to openly proclaim the gospel. Unfortunately many bands of today have the label christian, yet their lyrics are anything but christian.
For a presentation in Spring 2004 featuring contemporary and old style christian music I used this album to demonstrate what Christian music sounded like back in the day, and the entire class laughed at me! But its odd that in 1987 few if any college and high school christians would have laughed at me if I had done a similiar thing back then.
One of the Best.......2004-06-24
Great rockin' Christian cd. Every song is awesome! Buy this one. You will not regret it.
