Customer Reviews:
great first album .......2007-06-13
How they could kick Al Kooper out of this band after creating there debut god only knows.
Too bad the marriage was so short.......2007-05-15
Blood, Sweat & Tears was the total brainchild of Al Kooper. He made one classic LP with them, then left/was pushed out, they hire a singer and BOOM, they explode commercially. Talk about irony. Unlike many, though, I don't put down the Clayton-Thomas version of the band. In fact, I think that the self-titled LP was a classic of a sort. The material (all covers, right?) was well-chosen, the arrangements were tight and imaginative, the production was incredible, and Clayton-Thomas did a great job. It only lasted one album, but it was a great album.
But this is the real McCoy. A groundbreaking stunner. Had it not been for Kooper's vision, that second BS&T album could never have happened. This was the child that was father to the man. Though it has escaped grandiose status for almost 40 years, it is a stone cold classic.
B.S.& T. is Only Good with Al Kooper.......2006-11-06
This is an exceptional album.....not your typical Blood, Sweat and Tears commercialized garbage that was created after this album. This was their first album, raw and orginal, not over-produced or watered down for a top 40 audience. It is, in fact, the band driven and led by the great rock and blues musician, Al Kooper. When B. S. & T. "lost" Al Kooper, they lost everything.....fortunately, we can find what they lost in this album.
The Masterpiece.......2006-07-23
This album doesn't have any of Blood Sweat and Tears hits. However, it is the band's best album, at least from a conceptual sense. Even though every song is completely different from the last, it somehow feels like a smooth transition to go from one song to the next. This album also represents the original lineup of Blood Sweat and Tears, including the creator keyboardist (and on this album, vocalist), Al Kooper. Kooper had actually formed this band because of creative issues with Danny Kalb, the leader of another great band, the Blues Project. Kooper's experience in the Blues Project can be seen on this album, as there is still a great deal of blues infused into even the classical and r&b numbers. Some notable tracks that I especially enjoyed on this album include "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," "Overture," and the haunting but beautiful, "World Without Love."
Al Kooper COULD Be President of General Motors..........2006-05-23
Considering the shape they're in today, it could be a big improvement.
This was, of course, a huge sleeper in its day. Unlike the later Clayton-Thomas BST album, this one produced no "Top Ten" played hits. However, as a concept album it was great, and as one which paved the way for white-boy blues, it was something really new.
We loved them more than they'd ever know...and hey, look closely at the album cover. Take it from me - this was WAY before Photoshop.
Hipgnosis - how did they DO that, anyway??

Beautiful.......2007-06-14
This CD is a must have for any Mormon Tabernacle Choir fans. The music is very reverent and gentle, and should also appeal to those not from the LDS church, seeing as how most of the music is common to the wider Christian community. This CD is a fantastic addition to any music collection.
A few bright spots, but also some disappointments.......2007-01-19
It Is Well With My Soul is one of my favorite-favorites and that is the main reason why I bought the CD; it turned out to be a huge let down on this album, they rearranged it so much that I almost didn't recognize it. Be Still My Soul is another reason why I bought it and it's good, but not great. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is where it starts to get good. The last two songs "Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends"
and "Come, Let Us Anew" are very good reasons to buy this CD, they each have truely powerful passages and make the CD worth having. The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs 2006 release entitled Then Sings My Soul is by far the best that I've heard from them.
This CD Deserves SIX Stars!.......2005-11-05
However, the rating scale has a limit of five. I own over 700 CDs of virtually every type of music. Peace Like A River belongs in a class by itself! I've never written a review before but, after listening to this STUNNING performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I feel compelled to share my praise with that of the five other reviewers. If I were limited to one word, I would use the word "SUPERB" to describe this beautiful and moving CD. SIX stars for Peace Like a River! BRAVO!!!
every good adjective .......2005-08-06
This album is all beauty and solace. The singing is pristine, the arrangements lush and often stirring--never saccharine. As with the previous reviewer, my first listing of "Peace Like a River" brought me to tears (especially "Peace Like a River," the sopranos in "Swing Low," and the bagpipes in "Thou Gracious God"). Buy this one.
Fabulous!.......2005-05-29
The perfect recording to help you recover from a long, hard day. Showcasing the MTC's "new" sound in contemporary choral arrangements with its own orchestra and conductor, "Peace Like a River" brought tears to my eyes in selection after selection during my first listen -- and I'm not normally an emotional person! The title song together with "Deep River," "Swing Low" and "Be Still My Soul" are alone worth the cost of the recording. Get this one!

LOVE IN ANY LANGUAGE.......2006-12-26
I bought this CD for the song "Love Is Spoken Here" which was sung at my father's funeral, to celebrate his life and love of music, especially Church music. Our soloist was a friend whose voice warmed our breaking hearts. But when I saw that I could also get the Mormon Tabernacle Choir version along with many other beautiful American songs, I ordered this. I highly recommend MTC if you are seeking choir music to lift your spirit.

Not What You're Expecting - But Better!.......2002-07-23
"Child is Father..." is not what most people think of when they think of Blood, Sweat & Tears - but it is a lost
classic of '60s jazz-rock. David Clayton-Thomas had not yet joined the group and turned it into Chicago's
main soul-pop rival. For BST's first album, the group's brainchild and leader was keyboardist Al Kooper, a
New Yorker with a knack for sounding British. Kooper must be credited with fusing the horn section with the
rock band, and BST's classic horn riffs are clearly evident on this recording. However, unlike more popular
BST recordings, "Child is Father..." has a more eclectic jazz- and folk-rock sound. Try combining equal parts
early Chicago, Steve Winwood's Traffic, and Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, and you'll have a pretty good
idea of the sound. It is, quite simply, a unique classic.

Classic.......2001-11-20
It sounds so good even today, but only few can understand the progress that BS&T made by that album. In the 60's it sounded so special, so uniqe, and today it sounds "just" as a great album, one of the best in rock music. No need to review every song, though there are few well known ("I love you more than you'll ever know", Harry Nilsson's "Withoiut her", "I can't quit her", "Morning glory"). The album from "Overture" to "So much love" is one solid gold unit.
Before Chicago or the Electric Flag.......2000-06-18
I can still remember when I first heard this one... There was simply *nothing* like it at all. I saw them perform this album live and the band was impeccible live. The critics always point to the horns first or Al Kooper -- me, I always noticed their rythym section first. There was Jim Fielder, the greatest bassist I had ever heard up to that point (play 'My Days Are Numbered' -- it even sounds great crunched on RealPlayer!). Then on drums, was Bobby Colomby who went on to be a producer himself and work on other record and film projects. But before all that, he was one of the most brilliant drummers ever! I have little doubt that he inspired Chicago's Danny Seriphine
to play with such intensity and abandonment in later days. Then, above such a venerable rythym section were Al Kooper's great keyboard antics and the BS&T horn section -- the first bunch of horns in rock that ever mattered. (Well, besides the Stax Horns!) These guys could cook! This was some of the most exploritive and original rock ever recorded and it spawned others like the Electric Flag and Chicago, Ides of March and Lighthouse, as well as others too derivitive and banal to be remembered. The only weak spot in the line-up was Steve Katz, whose playing never seemed up to the caliber of the rest of the band. I always felt like Al Kooper had him there because guitarists were mandatory in rock bands at that point but it seemed Kooper wanted the focus on him and the horns. It worked. But the Steve Katz songs add a sense of romanticism to the album and that's probably why Kooper had him along; he was to Kooper what Bryan Maclen was to Arthur Lee in the band 'Love' of the same period. (And don't get me wrong, I love Bryan Maclen.) BS&T were one of the first bands ever to fuse rock and jazz -- sure, The Zombies had done some of that within their early works but this was a whole different type of jazz; call it a 'New York style', if you will. This was a big sound, full of intricate passages and nuances that challenged and took the listener into some of the most original ground ever recorded up to that point. 'I Can't Quit Her' and 'My Days are Numbered' still work today 33 years later. 'I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know' is also something that is worth its weight in RIAA-certified Gold! 'House In the Country' had a great horn passage and was the cut that 60's AM radio played -- figures! It's one of the few cuts on this gem that doesn't hold up well! (Who ever said radio programmers have a good sense of what's good?) This is an absolute 'must have' for anyone who is either a fan of the great horn bands of the late 60s, BS&T in particular, or of rock history, in general. A brilliant album that set the stage for many others and opened a door for the slick and polished more jazz/soul-centric BS&T of later vintage. This is a more blues-focused yet jazz-embellished BS&T. A powerful mix and a brilliant work -- one not to be overlooked.
before the lounge act.......2000-05-05
The first BST album set the standard for all horn-rock bands that followed. It gets a little pretentious in spots but there are at least 4 classic songs here: tracks 2,3,4 & 7.Only the first lp by the Electric Flag is in the same league as this masterpiece.BS&T would quickly decay because Kooper would go on to play with Stephen Stills and Mike Bloomfield.

Customer Reviews:
Don't underestimate those "unknown" Operettas!!.......2005-07-07
This is, as far as I know - the only way of buying the "official" recordings of "The Grand Duke" and "Utopia" - which seem to be otherwise out of print!! Several of the others are not that easy to get either.
In any case - most people getting this set will already have the Mikado, and very probably Pirates and Pinafore for that matter, so you're really getting it for the others.
So just for the record - someone has to say this!
The Mikado is (of course) a wonderful piece, but it enjoys its long running status as the most successful of all the G&S operettas very largely for "extra-musical" reasons. It is visually so wonderful, with all those great authentic costumes, and the whole idea of satirising English institutions by pretending they are Japanese is of course brilliantly funny.
Again, Pirates and Pinafore enjoy a lot of their acclaim simply because we have heard them so often. And at least part of the initial success of these (admittedly very funny and entertaining) pieces was the vogue for "nautical drama" on the popular Victorian stage.
Iolanthe, Ruddigore, and Yoemen are all MUCH stronger musically than any of what another reviewer here keeps calling the "trilogy". Patience, Princess Ida, and the Gondoliers all excel either "nautical" operetta, at least musically, although not, perhaps, the Mikado. And I have had a lot of fun listening to my recording of the Sorcerer - although I think most at least of the other G&S operettas are even more interesting.
As for "Trial by Jury" it is really another thing altogether - but in its kind the most perfect thing either Gilbert or Sullivan had anything to do with!
This leaves Utopia and the Grand Duke.
Both of these were produced after the long running friendship between G&S had soured, and they have been sadly neglected ever since. Utopia is none the less both musically beautiful and very funny, and well worth taking an effort to come to grips with. The main point of the satire (which many commentators and reviewers seem to miss) is the way that the English language and British (especially English) institutions were being adopted, often rather uncritically, by countries around the world (most, but not all, of them members of the British Empire, of course). India is perhaps the country Gilbert had most in mind, but you could set it in any of a dozen other countries. The residual problems this has left in the post-colonial world ensure that this work is still far from dated. In some ways this operetta is about globalisation! What could possibly be LESS dated than that!
The Grand Duke, on the other hand, is a bit of an odd man out - I suppose you still have to say it is the weakest of all the G&S efforts. It's the ONLY one that didn't score a very respectable run on its first outing. Surprisingly, however, if an attempt is made to duplicate the musical and (especially) dialogue cuts that G&S would have done themselves if they had not by this time been at each other's throats all the time, a very entertaining piece can be made of it. I was very agreeably surprised by the Ohio Light Opera recording, which does just that - and I am coming round to the idea that the only thing really wrong with the Duke is that it is too long.
ANYWAY:
For all people (especially callow youth) who remain convinced that G&S only wrote three operettas worth listening to - all I can say is, buy this set, and give the lesser known ones a chance. Make sure you have a libretto in your hands as you listen, of course. It may even just need a single hearing in some cases, but otherwise, be patient. In the meantime, you really cannot have any conception of what you are missing.
A few details.......2004-03-28
This 24-CD album consists of 12 plastic cases, each with a thin booklet giving background and plot summaries for the works on its 2 enclosed CD's. Most of the album consists of 15 operettas, 2 of which (Cox and Box, The Zoo) have texts not by Gilbert and 7 of which (The Sorcerer, Princess Ida, The Mikado, Ruddigore, Yeomen of the Guard, Utopia Limited, The Grand Duke) omit most of the spoken dialogue. Before listening to any of these operettas that you don't know well, you'll want to obtain a copy of its text so you can read along and not miss any of the words or the wit.
Wonderful set, if a little inconsistent at times........2003-07-07
If you thought that the Sargent set of G&S opera recordings was gargantum enough, then this D'Oyly Carte cycle is even more gargantum. Although it is more expensive (because of the four extra operas that the Sargent cycle did not include), this complete 24-CD set is like a joy to behold. There is a debate as to whether this is better than the Sargent cycle, but I like to think that this is a delight from first disc to last, because of the idiomatic sense of polish that these recordings seem to have, and are given a life that makes them able to breathe well. This is all thanks to Isidore Godfrey and Royston Nash's conducting. I know that the performances may not be entirely consistent (this is evident when you compare the performance and recording quality of Mikado and Pirates with those of Gondoliers and Pinafore), but this is only a matter of personal preference. The 1960s performances were given more sumptuous and well-detailed recordings than the 1970s recordings, made when the performing style was not so fresh. But anyway, I still think that this is definitely a good buy for anyone who loves G&S. Even with the consistency of Sargent's cheaper EMI set, I would still say: do go ahead to invest in the set because of the liveliness and style in this complete G&S cycle that Sargent never (hardly ever) tackles. The only thing is: I would also like to suggest complementing it with the 1957 Decca D'Oyly Carte recordings of Mikado and Pirates, recently released by the Sounds on CD label, so that these recordings can do justice to the enormous spirit of these operas.

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Marcel Dupré is an important historical as well as musical figure, his compositional freedom linking the golden age of Widor and Vierne with the radical rethinking that Messiaen saw through in his great organ cycles. Never doing things by halves, Naxos has reached Volume 9 of the complete organ works--mainly chamber pieces involving organ. Most substantial is the "Trio for Violin, Cello, and Organ," in one sense a throwback to the Baroque line of trio sonatas, but with a harmonic richness that indicates a late-19th-century inheritance--thoughtful, undemonstrative music, persuasively realized by Bruce Neswick and colleagues. The "Quartet" adds a viola to the lineup, but a delightful scherzando apart is a lesser affair, while the "Sonata for Cello and Organ" is a modest but interesting work (at least for the way Dupré makes a telling contrast between the sonorities of the two instruments). Again, perceptive playing from Neswick, whose Indiana organ has a clear, bright sound that makes the generous selection of Chorales interesting for the listener as well as the player. At the price, a worthwhile collection of some unusual repertoire. --Richard Whitehouse

I haven't even listened through the entire CD. I don't think I can bring myself to spend my time doing so. Where to begin. From the selections I've heard, the chorus sounds incredibly thin and weak, the organ overpowering them on numerous occasions. Part of the blame in that, however, goes to the mix...the choir not getting enough mic to balance out the instruments. That happens too often in chorus/instrument recordings and it drives me batty. The music selections aren't so inspiring either. You would do much better devoting your hard-earned dollars to Eric Whitacre's acappella choral works, or any of his contemporaries.
