Neil Young-After The Gold Rush *****

Neil Young released his seceond classic solo album in 1970. This time he elected to go it without the help of the grea Crazy Horse. Though he did use every member of the band at one point or another during the recording of After The Goldrush this was largley a solo album. A much softer and lighter album then it's predicesor Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and actually accesable compared to the debut selftitled album. After The Goldrush is a much more personal album with more hearfelt lyrics and a far less dry recording then that of his previous albums.

By this time Neil Young had already made a large name for himself working with the legendary Buffalow Springfield, the success of Everbody Knows This Is Nowhere, and he was beginning to work with Crosby, Stills, and Nash, so it was only logical that this album be a massive success.

Songs like 'Tell Me Why' and the hit 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' and 'I Believe In You' are very personal songs that have to be heard to appreciate and when heard one can since and feel the longing in Youngs voice for love. The cover of the country classic 'Oh, Lonesome Me' really sums up the entire feel of this album and Neil mood at the time, he was in a very low place and was longing for companionship of some kind. While tracks like the short 'Till The Morning Comes' and the equally as short 'Cripple Creek Ferry' seem up beat and peppy they are the shortest moments on the album and by the far the only half way forgetable ones on this classic. 'Southern Man' is a classic and it was destend to become so the moment it was recorded. Establishing Neil Young as a certified first rate guitar slinger, and the Godfather of grunge all at the same time. 'Southern Man' is one of if not the single most contraversial songs Young ever recorded causing a rivalry between him and the southern rock band from Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd. The title track on the album 'After The Gold Rush' is another Young classic and one of his all time best songs. It is a song about the renissance, the 1970's, and the future and how the world is changing and not changing and what we could be doing to fix things but are not doing. It is a calssic song that is for sure. 'When You Dance You Can Really Love' is one song that has always be given a bad rap and for what I do not understand the song is wonderful and one that I personally get lost in everytime I hear it. 'Birds' is without a doubt one of the most beautiful songs Neil Young or anyone has ever written and it is heart wrenching to listen to. You relaly must hear to understand what I mean. 'Dont Let It Bring You Down' is possibly the best song Young ever recorded. The melody line and the vocal layering is wonderful. The lyrics are spectacular, quite simply amazing. Do sit and write in a little review how amazing 'Dont Let It Bring You Down' is, is just frankly impossible. Just listen is all that can be said.

After The Gold Rush has gone down in history and one of the all time greatest rock n' roll albums ever. Many best of, critics, and music fans alike. After The Gold Rush is an album all Neil Young fans and all rock n' roll fans around the world should own. It's an album of songwriting, and much more tendor then most of the other albums in Youngs cannon, Highly recomended.

While this is not one of my favorite Neil Young albums, it is a solid effort. It was a top ten hit on the US album charts and produced his first solo top 40 hit "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and the minor follow-up hit "When You Dance You Can Really Love". It includes probably his most overrated song, the cliché ridden "Southern Man", which is really just a remake of his excellent "Cowgirl in the Sand". It was popular primarily because it helped perpetuate anti-southern and anti-Christian stereotypes (the only two groups that it is still politically correct to stereotype). "Tell Me Why" is a very good song as is "After The Gold Rush", though Young's vocal limitations are very apparent on this song as he struggles to hit the notes. "Till The Morning Comes" is good but sounds like a song that he started but could never finish. All-in-all, a good album but not a great one.

The icon Neil Young solidified himself in the early to mid 70's and the funny thing is that he remains true to this album to this day despite all the semi forays into synthesized madness,noise,albums cut with Pearl Jam, and the styles of the day.
The simplicity of this album as well as his prior 2, the few that followed are all 5 stars,it's laid back intimate sparse texture that fuses bittersweet tinged country ruminations with the great garage rock of Crazy horse was his formula and Neil's ongoing trademark of endurance.
Nobody does it better, none of his musical children.
I happily was front row in New York on his "Greendale" tour, saw that great"Rust Never Sleeps" tour,and followed and listen to him from the "Deja Vu" days onward and all you youngsters are best to start with these and should listen to Buffalo Springfield with his old buddy Steve Stills to see the development of this musician and the status he achieved with CSN&Y and beyond.

This is a good transitional album by Neil. He smartly used some of Crazy Horse and CSN to complete it before going on tour with CSNY.

Torrential creativity has fast-forwarded the artistic evolution of former Whiskeytown frontman Ryan Adams from country-rock boy wonder (see Faithless Street) to despondent troubadour with a 1960s fixation (his solo debut Heartbreaker), but it may also explain why listeners often need to wade through some pedestrian material just to find a few pearls of poetic excellence. Gold is no exception to that trend, a sometimes engaging middle-of-the-road roots-pop album that's both overlong (70 minutes) and at times overindulgent. There are high spots--such as the bouncy, breezy opener "New York, New York" and the plaintive ballad "When the Stars Go Blue" (which features a vocal turn reminiscent of Morrissey)--but much of the disc gets lost in forests of indistinct guitars and plodding percussion that never nudges Adams into actually rocking. Gold is the work of a notoriously prolific songwriter who hasn't yet learned to play to his strengths, one whose execution doesn't yet match his vision. --Anders Smith Lindall

I think many people have had very high expectations of Adams; as Adams has for himself. I can't help but hear the overtones comparing him with Dylan, the Stones, etc...and make the comment that these critics should count the number of Double albums each of these artists had. And, to take a closer look at many of the Dylan albums, stretching to the complete end of usable vinyl on each side. If they had more room (like the Beatles use of the runout groove in Sgt. Pepper's) I fully believe they would have used it- and then some. Dylan's plethora of albums releases in the 60's was much of a result of the limitations of the record length as it was the heaping of material he wanted to record (see BBC's history of the record).
I've heard the (re: Mr. Brough's review) "young artist of the CD era," comment before, and feel this is a bit of a lazy cop out. Gold, is paced very well beginning with it's anthem, following with another up beat number. Tracks such as La Cienga, Harder Now, Goodnight Hollywood Blvd. are not only Adams verging on a mature approach to an emotinal topic, but very good change of pace within the context of the record.

Hey, I miss flipping my albums over too- and the craft of shaping each side as a sort of "set." To dismiss this talented musician and writer as "squeeze(ing) into every minute of a disc's capacity," is missing one of the points completely.

'gold' is an excellent album, and probably ryan adams' most commercially-friendly release to date. if you've heard of ryan adams, want to try him out and need a place to start in his catalogue (which is fairly extensive even though he is barely 33), 'gold' would be an ideal purchase. none of the first ten songs on the record need to be skipped over, with 'the rescue blues,' 'stars go blue' and 'nobody girl' as the highlights. while MUCH has been written about his difficult personality as well as his alcohol and drug problems, 'gold' proves his songwriting talent is first-rate.

Loved it. The guy has a pseudo alternative rock-country style that I like. First two tracks and track six are my favorites. Lyrics are cool. It's a classic "guy singing and banging on guitar" collection - you can't beat it.

The album was a work of art but you need to see the video For I still love you New York It was shot on September 10, 2001 on the other side of the Hudson with the WTC in the backround!! Bone Chilling yet refreshing! He was the first musical guest on SNL after the attacks . Enjoy

I'm a big fan of Adams, and I think he's a very talented artist. Most people consider this his best. I don't think so, but I do think its good.

When I first listened to this album, I was quite taken with the first three songs, especially "Answering Bell." I thought he was on a roll. If were to compare this to throwing an object off a cliff, this would be where the object soars.

That being said, the album continues on with "La Cienega Just Smiled," "Rescue Blues," "Somehow Someday," and "When the Stars go blue." While not quite as capturing as the first three songs, I love them and listen to them about as much.

After this point, it become clear that my metaphorical object isn't exactly going to fly. "Nobody Girl," SYLVIA PLATH, "Enemy Fire," and "Gonna Make You Love Me" range from the good to the mediocre. "Enemy Fire" recalls Neil Young's more crazy horse-esque moments, making it my favorite of this batch. SYLVIA PLATH starts out really starts out very strong but seems a bit lackluster towards the end, making it overall a good song. The other two I'm fairly neutral about.

My flight testing object continues on its downward path, whereby we come to my "shady" area of the album. "Wild Flowers" and "Harder Now That It's Over" are not exactly memorable (i don't remember them very well right now) but I know they're listenable.

I don't know what Adams was thinking when he layed down the last three tracks. At this point my object crashes into pieces on the rocks below. Pretty much the only reason this cd doesn't get quite 5 stars. Better luck next time.

Overall this another really good album from Adams, but it has flaws. This could have easily been a 10-12 track cd, but instead, it has 16, so the cd kinda drones in places. In other words, the garden is beautiful, it just needs to be weeded.

...but the song on here that i am definitely feeling right now is "suddenly", the ballad that olivia did with cliff richard back in 1980, which was a serious time for abundant guilty pleasures on fm pop radio at the time. i used to hear this song all the time on the bus going to and coming home from elementary school in the 3rd grade, and even caught cliff and olivia perform it on "solid gold"!! (damn, that's a lond time ago!) i just love the chorus, with the "i...i, i....i'm ready to sail any ocean.." yeah, all the hits are on this cd, but this is one to put on for that serious slow jam on the dance floor!!

Warm, gentle, and welcoming, Gordon Lightfoot's folk-rock disarms even the most cynical listener. In 1975 Lightfoot rounded out this hits collection by revisiting nine of his 1960s compositions, including "I'm Not Sayin'/Ribbon of Darkness," "Song for a Winter's Night," "Early Morning Rain," and "Steel Rail Blues." Rather than maintain the direct approach of his early work, he adds the string arrangements that mark his 1970s work. Let me say that one of my pet peeves in life is the sheer number of ways our friends at the record companies have found to release slightly different versions of an artist's greatest hits. Besides greatest hits, there are best ofs, anthologies, esstentials, all-time greatest hits, very best ofs, completes, golds, definitives, classics, favorites, proper introductions to, etc. I'm sure anyone who reads this can think of other terms. Having said that, this CD reissue of what was originally a two-LP set of "Gord's Gold" is an excellent starting point for fans of the man. As other reviewers have noted, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is not present because it was recorded after this set was released. So if you must have that song or anything else Mr. Lightfoot recorded after about 1974, look elsewhere. The reason this set does not get five stars from me is the glaring omission of "Affair on Eighth Avenue," a great song that was on the original records. Because of space limitations, it was omitted from the CD so that Reprise Records could issue this collection on a single disc. Mr. Lightfoot originally had the song on one of his United Artist albums from the late 1960s. But he re-recorded it for "Gord's Gold," and to the best of my knowledge, the newer version has never appeared on any other CD. I was hoping it would be on the excellent 4-CD box set covering Mr. Lightfoot's entire career that was released by Rhino Records a few years ago. But it wasn't. Nor was it a bonus track when Rhino put out Mr. Lightfoot's four studio albums _ "Old Dan's Records," "Dream Street Rose," "Shadows" and "Salute" _ that hadn't been on CD before. It could have been. What a shame it wasn't. So this is a plea to Rhino/Reprise/Warner Brothers: Please, if you ever get around to digitally remastering "Gord's Gold," restore "Affair on Eighth Avenue" to it. I believe the technology has improved to the point that a single CD can hold up to 80 minutes now, which would easily accomodate the extra track.

Since 1968, I have followed this masterful singer songwriter.I have thoroughly enjoyed this recording. That being said,it is frustrating that Warner/Reprise has not remastered Gord's Gold, because one can hear how blurred the sound is, especially the UA material. You can HEAR the difference in the sound, if one has the 4 CD Songbook, regarding the remainder. This may sound like heresy, but I suggest skipping Gord's Gold, Vol 2. That is the only disappointing rerecordings of the incomparable originals.

Gordon Lightfoot, a remarkable pioneer of Canadian music and culture, gives us a magnificent "best of" with this beautiful album, "Gord's Gold". Originally released in 1975 for LP, it gave you 22 tracks of beautiful Canadian heritage. Re-released in 1992 for c.d. fans still get 21 tracks(minus "Affair on 8th Avenue" -it states on c.d. back cover) of intelligently wrote and recorded material from one of Canada's best.

Track 1, is a 2 track combo (for it's similar sound), I'm Not Sayin', and "Ribbon of Darkness". These are beautiful, thought provoking songs of friendship and personal findings, not sad tales of despair heartache, and loss.

Tracks 11 - "Sundown", 14 - "Rainy Day People", 19 - "If You Could Read My Mind", and 21 - "Carefree Highway" are songs that people the world over recognize due to their beautiful sounds, and wordplay that radios over the last 35 years have been loving to play due to such a high demand for the love and respect for human life, brought forth by Gordon Lightfoot.

All in all, every track is a gem, and should not be taken lightly. Gordon Lightfoot, stood up for the Native Canadians long before anyone cared to pay attention, hence his " Canadian Railroad Tilogy", and it's strong Native ties for an understanding of what the white man did to Native soil. He mentioned in an interview that our Countries anthem does have the words, " Our home and NATIVE LAND" in it. He demonstrates on this album, the fact that, whether or not you are white, black, native, etc. the universal language, and color, is music.

Of course this is one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite artists - I wore my mothers record out when I was a kid, so I was thrilled to get it on CD... and then I noticed that one of my all-time favorite songs was not on it! Affair on 8th Avenue was cut from this album for space. Although I think a version of it is available on other CDs, the version on Gord's Gold was by far the best, most beautiful, and most haunting.
So, whomever put this CD out should definately re-release it with that song back on it - I'd not only pay more money for another copy that HAS that song, but I'd buy them for my friends, most of whom are now also huge Lightfoot fans, thanks to my incessant playing of his music.

I was fortunate to walk past the librarian's desk and discovered a new CD of his. I LOVED it sooo much i had to buy his others immediately. I am so tired of the typical kids songs we have always heard. He is a humorous, talented lyricist sounding similiar to my favorites - Squeeze and the Cure. I was not disappointed - i can't wait for his next CD.

We discovered Justin Roberts music on XM Kids radio one day, and my entire family was hooked. His lyrics are clever and surprising - and has brought my three kids (ages 5, 3, and 1) to both giggles and quiet thoughts while listening. We dance to "Airplane of Food" and "Daycamp" almost daily, and we LOVE the "Humpty Dumpty" song - it's inspired a game where the kids dream up crazy things that Humpty can see while up on the wall.

We're anxiously awaiting his new "Meltdown" CD release on March 21st, and are proud to own all of his albums. We each have our favorite songs - and the kids (and I) fight over which one to listen to next. We've graduated from the Wiggles, and are never EVER looking back!

Mainstream, popular Country music is what you get on this double CD album. From the dawn of the 1950s, when commercial recording interests took a firm hold on this particular strand of America's musical tradition, to the end of the 1980s, when other styles started to squeeze Country out of the charts.

In the late 60s and early 70s, it was widely acknowledged that the two gods of Country were Johnny Cash and Jim Reeves (selling better than ever after his untimely death). So it is strange that Reeves's star has waned so quickly, and he is excluded from a compilation like this. That would have been unthinkable thirty years ago; now it is unremarkable.

On the other hand, Jerry Lee Lewis definitely does not belong here. When Tennessee Ernie Ford says "If you see me coming, better stand aside. A lot of men didn't, a lot of men died", you don't really take him seriously. When Lewis introduces himself as "The Killer", you get the uneasy feeling he really means it. His music is on the fringes of country and his attitude is on the edge of sanity.

Still, this is a good, representative collection and is available at bargain prices, so has to be recommended. I always take it when I drive through the Mojave or the Sierras. For me, this is music for the open road.

5 out of 5 stars Four decades of country number ones.......2005-07-29

Only one of the thirty-six tracks here didn't make it to number one in the American country singles charts, that being God bless the USA, which the compilers understandably selected to represent Lee Greenwood here in preference to any of his country number one hits. In its way, that selection shows that number one is not the only thing that matters in the music business - some of the most famous songs in popular music never made it to number one in any chart. Nevertheless, the number one position does indicate a certain measure of popularity and this collection contains many great country classics.

This compilation, being by Hip-O, has easy access to the vaults of the record labels that are now part of the Universal group, so those labels dominate - however, Hip-O have licensed some tracks from the Sony / BMG group, so Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Charley Pride and Eddy Arnold are included. The real surprise is that Reba McEntire and George Strait, two artists who each had several number one hits for Universal labels in the eighties, are omitted. You'd think it was easier for Hip-O to include them than to worry about Dolly and the others.

The tracks are in chronological sequence, beginning with Hank Williams in 1951 and ending with Patty Loveless in 1989. 1989 is an interesting and appropriate end-point, as that was the year when a new generation of singers changed everything in country music, or so it seemed. Of course, the new generation has recorded a lot of great music (though how much of it can truly be described as country is a matter for debate) but I know that many country fans regard 1989 as the beginning of the end of their kind of country music.

The compiler clearly likes the seventies best as there are fifteen tracks from that decade with seven tracks each from the fifties, sixties and eighties. I can well understand the compiler's preference, as it was a very good decade for country music, both at home in America and internationally.

With a compilation like this, it is always possible to argue about track selection - whether the song selected for the chosen artist is the best, whether some omitted artists should have been included and so on - but when you look at it overall, this is a brilliant compilation that provides a great introduction to four decades of country music - and it comes with liner notes by Rich Kienzle.

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Nearly Forty Years of Classic Country.......2005-07-27

This 36-track collection chronologically covers nearly four decades of country music beginning with Hank Williams 1951 hit "Hey, Good Lookin'" and ending with Patty Loveless's 1989 hit "Timber, I'm Falling in Love." For any 2-CD set to adequately cover four decades is a nearly impossible task--especially when both discs run under sixty minutes.

This collection could easily have been expanded by an additional dozen or more tracks, allowing the compilers to focus more attention on country's golden era, namely the fifties and the sixties. There are only five tracks from the fifties and eight from the sixties, while the seventies--an era marked by crossover artists like Glen Campbell and Kenny Rogers--is represented by fifteen tracks (nearly half of the total).

In fact, the compilers of this anthology placed a lot of emphasis on crossover hits. Twenty of these No. 1 country hits also hit the top 40 on the pop charts, with "Sixteen Tons," "All I Have To Do Is Dream," "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" and "Rhinestone Cowboy" placing No. 1 on both charts.

There's only one serious misstep in the song selection. While it DID reach the top of the country charts in 1972, Jerry Lee Lewis's versions of the Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace" simply is out of place. And personally, I could have done without Lee Greenwood's maudlin "God Bless the U.S.A." [Besides, it's the only song that didn't reach No. 1.] The only other flaw in this collection is that even though it runs through 1989, there are no artists from country's new traditionalism movement. Where's George Strait or Randy Travis?

With that said, this is an overall satisfying--albeit brief--look at four decades of country music. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Oak Ridge Boys is without a doubt one of the greatest country music bands of all time. This Gold cd has almost all of their best hits and some more. Who could ever forget classic hit song EL VIRA, this incredibly catchy song is in my opinion, one of the best country songs of all time. Everybody remembers EL VIRA, everybody loves EL VIRA, I still listen this song whenever I felt tired of everyday tough life.

Oak Ridge Boys made country music into almost pop music sense. Yes, they hit the pop chart so many times, EL VIRA reached no.5 and another classic BOBBIE SUE reached pop chart, too. Both songs are pure country music classics, and with Alabama's some classic hits - LOVE IN THE FIRST DEGREE, MOUNTAIN MUSIC - regarded by many country music fans as some of the greatest country hits of all time.

After all these years, Oak Ridge Boys still remain active band. It's amazing, and young generations of country music fans and musicians respect Oak Ridge Boys legacy very much. I respect them, too. Their music and lyrics always dealing with hope and love. Their now legendary hits still played many country music radio stations. That's a real influence, I guess.

This Gold cd is a must own collection for every country music fans. But, if you're not a country music fans, don't worry. Oak Ridge Boys music is everyone's music. Country fans, pop fans, everybody loves and sing their songs, I promise. Just listen EL VIRA and BOBBIE SUE first then listen all other tracks, you'll have one of the joyful hour in your life. The only 2 chunks of coal here in this collection are the Barbra Mandrell and Johnny Cash mixes. I do love Johnny Cash, but this particular track is not worthy to be on a gold collection. That goes DOUBLE for adding the B.M. track!

If they were going to do this, the Oaks backup with George Jones on
"Still The Same Ol' Me (loving the same sweet you)" would have been a better pick. Even the Oaks backing Paul Simon on "Slip Slid'n Away" would have been better than the B.M. track. Otherwise, great collection!

I did like the fact that they included "Family Reunion". This was right before they went country and were still gospel. It fits right in though since it's not exactly a gospel song.

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

I have to give this 5 stars to hopefully raise the overall rating. When I bought this yesterday, I was expecting a train wreck but it's actually very good. Yes, Gord's voice isn't as strong as in the early recordings but it's great to hear a newer-take on the songs...it's almost like listening to a live concert sometimes. I have every Gordon Lightfoot album and I still enjoyed listening to this CD.

Some thoughts on this album. One previous reviewer stated that Gord's voice is not as good as it was, in the 1970's. When Sundown was recorded in 1973-74, he was 35. I do not know of anybody, whose voice is the same, say at 55. His voice has matured. It is true that his problems with the bottle, did nothing to help his voice,but I enjoy his recordings post-1984. This particular album is noteworthy for the inclusion of "If It Should Please You". The others are more like in concert. These songs are well done, but I still prefer the original recordings.

Being an avid fan of Lightfoot for 35 years, I would recommend any/all/and this collection to everyone. Lightfoot has a special
magic of making each time you listen to one of his songs, just like the first time. I never tire of his music, and find unique special moments in remakes. His version of "Not Supposed to Care" in this collection is absolutely outstanding. My wife always asks me...."Don't you ever get tired of listening to Gordon Lightfoot music?" The answer is NO. This album is a good example of why I don't.

Funny thing about fandom. Even among casual fans, there are all kinds of gradations. I would admit to being only a casual fan of Gordon Lightfoot, but that's not to say that given world enough and time, I wouldn't be more of one. I'm certainly not like the (probably apocryphal) joker who once yelled out at a concert, "Play the Wreck of the Ella Fitzgerald!" Not quite that bad.

In fact, in my teens I had several of Gordo's earliest records (the ones on United Artists) and loved them. But then, in college I started hanging out with some acoustic musicians who were hard core Lightfoot FREAKS. And you know how it is, since you know you're going to get to hear your friends copies, you spend your own hard earned cash on something else. And it was true, to a degree. I certainly got to hear all of Lightfoot's early 70s Reprise albums at friends' places.

But did I really absorb them? I guess not. When I recently picked up on a used copy of GORD'S GOLD II--one with the inserts missing--I realized there were a large number of these "golden oldies" that I didn't know after all (must have come out after we graduated or something). And many seemingly obvious choices for inclusion (title tracks from his many albums, for instance) did not make the cut. And it probably does not speak well for me that it wasn't even clear to me until I started to peruse the reviews included on this Amazon, that these were, for the most part, RE-recordings of tracks from earlier albums. Hmmm, I THOUGHT there was something different.

And being only a casual fan, I scarcely realized the level of controversy I was entering into by purchasing this CD and actually liking it. I vaguely recall reading about Lightfoot's decision to do "live in the studio" re-recordings of these selected "gold standard" tracks. Seems like a valid artistic choice to me, but then, I try never to second guess any artist's decisions. Judging from some of the other reviews, I may be in a distinct minority.

I like the warm live sound of this recording--and I don't miss the audience response particularly either. Lightfoot is one performer I regret never having seen. This record gives me a taste of what I have been missing all these years. Without any distraction. Close your eyes and you almost have your litte personal house concert going on. And I can't say I miss the strings from some of those classic 70s albums exactly. I never objected to them, but the stripped down sound of most of the tracks here is preferable to me.

But of course, many people bought this album thinking they were getting something else, and I suppose they have every right to vent their spleen. Hopefully though, they'll satisfy their craving for collections of the original studio versions from among the several now available. But if they give GOLD II a second, third or umpteenth chance, they may find its laconically seductive charm creeping up on them.

It would be pointless to deny that Gordo's voice was already showing some wear by the mid-80s when this was recorded. But those who describe his singing as "horrible" here are surely exaggerating. A pro like Lightfoot doesn't just lose it totally. There's a frayed quality to some of the vocals, no question, but his expert phrasing more than makes up for that. As a performing artist he's got what TV newscasters everywhere would give their eyeteeth to have: gravitas.

Which is not to say he lacks humor or warmth. It's all there in spades. And his rapport with the band is remarkable. This is one tight ensemble. You don't get that quality with your typical studio production job. Now that it's been in release for close to 20 years--and now that other compilation packages are also available--it's time to drop the controversy re: this record. Just listen to it for what it is. And enjoy.

Canadian folk singer Gordon Lightfoot has followed up his first greatest hits collection (Gord's Gold) with "Gords Gold II", another fine anthology of songs. Most people are more familiar with the songs on the first g.h. album, such as "Sundown" and "If You Could Read My Mind", but this disc has several great songs of its own.

The most recognizable track on this disc is the wonderful and haunting "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", a sea ballad about the Great Lakes ore boat which sank in November of 1975 on Lake Superior. Lightfoot's voice and his excellent backing band bring the story of the Fitz to life in this great song.

There are other good songs on this disc as well, including "Race Among the Ruins" and "Cherokee Bend". Although the songs on this disc did not attain the prominence of the ones on his first g.h. cd, they are still great to listen to.

I recommend this cd very highly. Gordon Lightfoot still sounds good today, and each of his songs carries a unique message. Listen to this collection of hits and hear some great folk music from one of its best artists.

i bought this two disc cd "tom jones gold" including most of his best songs "it's not unusal", "detroit city", "delilah", "help yourself", "love me tonight", "i can't turn you loose" (tom proving himself a capable soul singer), "she's a lady" and his dynamic vocals on "i got your number". tom jones ranks as one of the most powerful greatest singers ever. he sings with such vocal range. from up tempo pop tunes to ballads and r & b. he is also one of the greatest live performers with his shaking and dancing. this cd "gold" is truly a great compilation on tom's greatest songs from 1965-1975.
