Album Description
Earning Their White Stripes. "But what I'm listening to most of the time at present is an album called Good For What Ails You, which is an album of songs that people used to listen to at medicine shows all over the States. It's quite an interesting album and I think that people would be well advised to pick it up." Jack White - Sunday Mail (Australia) Dec 18, 2005
Five Stars. Groundbreaking. "Fans of Nick Tosches' Where Dead Voices Gather will lap up this extraordinary snapshot of an America that is still shrouded in shadow. Good For What Ails You supplants the Harry Smith collections by surveying the people's music of the day, some of which sounds like nothing you have heard before." Jon Savage - MOJO Dec 2005
Before motion pictures, before radio, before television, the traveling Medicine Shows brought entertainment to America! Flamboyant pitch doctors roamed the land, hawking their tonics, elixirs, and miracle cures, and with them came a host of singers, dancers, comedians, banjo pickers, blues shouters, jug blowers, string ticklers, and minstrel men. The shows died out by mid-20th century, but not before a handful of seasoned veterans left their musical legacy on phonograph records. Here are classic performances by such colorful names as Pink Anderson, Daddy Stovepipe, Gid Tanner, Blind Sammie, Bogus Ben Covington, Fiddlin' John Carson, Banjo Joe, Shorty Godwin, Beans Hambone, Emmett Miller & His Georgia Crackers, the Three Tobacco Tags, and many more!
Two-CD Set / 48 Songs Digitally Remastered / Over 2 Hours of Music / Six-Panel Digipak with 72-page Full Color Booklet
A Profusely Illustrated History of the Medicine Shows, many Rare Photographs and Firsthand Accounts never before published, plus full discography and song descriptions.

Old Time Music.......2007-05-13
This gave us 50 tracks of original music. Along with it you get a nice booklet that tells the history of the medicine shows and individual descriptions of each track and it's performers.
You will feel so much better.......2007-01-25
You just can't imagine what the life of a performer on the road in the 20, 30's (or earlier) must have been like. The ups of course was the freedom, and the fun at times. The downs include never knowing what was around the corner, the cold (or heat), some of the boarding houses I would imagine would have been dreadful amongst many others.
But at least we can listen to the music. I've only received this the other day and I've not taken it out of the player, it goes to work with me and takes me home again, it plays in the background when I'm busy about the house. Yes some of the sound quality is hissy, but they are old recordings and besides I would rather hear it like that, it adds to the feel. These are happy songs, even when they are talking about slashing someones throat. If you looking at this you obviously have an interest in this style of music and you would be doing yourself a favour by purchasing this wonderful collection. You get 2 CD's and a wonderful booklet that tells you a little history of the genre and pictures of some the the performers on the CD's as well as a little history on each of the songs.
The right medicine for the blahs! Outstanding fun!.......2006-10-23
Step right up..ladies and gentlemen...Are you feeling blah listening to those same old CD's you've had for the last several years? Does today's music leave you cold? Well, you've come to the right place. Restore your enthusiasm...bring back the fun, with 50 recordings from the golden age of medicine shows. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Many of these fine artists are obscure names to most people of this generation...but alas...like an old ancient Indian cure...this box set will bring you back to life. Yes friends and neighbors...it also comes with a beautiful full-color booklet with all the songs, dates and stories of old. Uh..excuse me son, don't crowd the stage. IT'S A PANACEA FOR ALL BORING AILMENTS! Yes and considering how old these gems are (1925-36) they are all in remarkable shape...and your sense of humor will be too. So pick one up today. It;s more fun than a brand new Victrola!
Brings Back Memories to the Old (and Young)!.......2006-08-28
'Good For What Ails You' is a great set of cd's with old songs that were sung at old medicine shows. I remember some of those songs from records and radio programs from my childhood - songs that I had totally forgotten!
I lent the cd's to my father, and they brought back fond memories of his childhood in western OK when the medicine shows would come to town and set up on the square. Everyone would attend the "show" and listen to the music, sales pitches, and go home with something! He truly enjoyed the cd's, also.
Even if medicine shows are new to you, the music is worth the time to listen. Lot's of fun, interesting lyrics, and you might even hear something that has come back again!?
Priceless anthology.......2006-07-05
This element of American history should never be forgotten, and this anthology ensures that it won't. The accompanying booklet is a textbook of fascinating anecdotes and photographs, and it even includes a small, helpful insert of "spelling errata" to guide the reader through the language of the time. The music itself transports the listener to a time that seems like ancient history, populated by snake oil salesmen who employed fast-picking, fast-talking one-man bands to make their product more appealing to the desperately poor. But this collection also reminds us that times haven't changed all that much since those days of the Great Depression. After all, when was the last time you heard a trendy, catchy song in a commercial trying to sell you something as basic as toothpaste?

Customer Reviews:
Bolero .......2007-01-12
This CD is exactly what I was looking for. Bolero over and over with different performers.
Loads of fun.......2004-07-09
This is a fun little album consisting of ten versions of Ravel's greatest "hit" -- the fantastic "Bolero." This album covers the waterfront -- from synthesizer to Benny Goodman. My only complaint is that the quality of some of older recordings in particular is rather poor. In fact you need to crank up the volume on two or three cuts, otherwise you won't even realize the song has begun. It would be interesting to apply this concept to any number of the great classical and popular pieces that one can't seem to get enough of -- how about Cole Porter's "Night and Day" for starters?

Customer Reviews:
Masterful performances.......2007-05-24
The Rózsa violin concerto is one of my favorite pieces and this is, beyond all doubt, the best recorded performance of this far-too-neglected work. I do have one quibble with Maestro Heifitz's performance: he rushes the central theme of the middle movement a bit; I would love to have heard him "sing" it a bit more, at a slighltly slower tempo -- a bit more tenderness and longing -- because it is such a moving melody.
The other pieces on this disc are also wonderful, especially the Korngold. I respectefully disagree with the earlier reviewer about the Korngold being too cliché and corny, but as the old Romans said, "De gustibus non disputandum est."
If you are a Heifitz fan, or these three great masters of film music, you can't go wrong with this CD.
Transport to Heaven via Violin.......2007-01-03
Brilliant music played by a brilliant musician. I put it on the CD player in my office when I'm having a tough day and it makes all the annoyance fade away!
Sweetest sounding Heifetz - 1950s mono RCAs.......2005-08-18
Heifetz tended to play monochromatically in the 30s and faster in the 60s (ala Toscanini). In the early half of the 1950s, he performed at his peak (which is the creme de la creme of violinists). His tone had an harmonic richness and variety coupled with his incendiary technique. This is the best of Heifetz (the Korngold is tops, better than any other recording). Try his Beethoven Kreutzer with Moseiwitch for a similar experience (warning, the RCA release favors Heifetz and is more accurate playing, the 1949 Moseiwitch sponsored recording has an even balance and is really great despite some Heifetz miscues). This particular CD incarnation is truly awful. I think the Korngold is fake stereo and overall the sound is mediocre. Seek out a clean mono LP copy (I found that a mint red seal from the 70s is best-just like the master tape). If a better CD issue becomes apparent, I'll post it here.
Simply Great.......2003-09-29
This is simply the greatest recording of the Rosza ever made. It is full of intensity and expressive nuance. I don't care what others say, this tops the Telarc recording.
Rosza's concerto is one of his greatest works, and a much overlooked masterpiece.
The Korngold, on the other hand, has its moments, but is mired in worn-out cliches. More Korn than Gold. The performance is also disappointing...there are several places where the soloist and orchestra are not in tempo (particularly the last movement).
A recommended disc.
The Great Heifetz plays some (lesser known) greats.......2001-01-31
Perhaps no violinist (or even, perhaps, no musician) ever had the unique sense of musical phrasing that Heifetz had. His playing is both powerful and lyrical, virtuosic and subtle. I have only heard the Korngold concerto of these three in this version. (an old LP I found recently) The other two pieces I'm sure are worthwhile, having heard of them, but the Korngold is absolutely incredible. The second movement is sweet and light yet full of great pathos. The finale is dance-like and fiery. Some of the viruosic maneuvers (playing two different phrases with different rhythms while giving each its own line and dynamic change -- at the same time!) I have yet to hear the equal of. And the piece as a whole has something 20th century music too often lacks: melody. You cannot go wrong with this purchase.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

An alternate view of .......2005-10-25
As I write, several reviewers have commented on the "bad" sound quality of the 4 selections which were transferred from 78 RPM records. I feel that this is somewhat like criticizing at a silent movie because it has no sound. [...]
The modern era of recording music started in the very late 1940s. Some might even argue it started around 1950 or 1951. Magnetic tape didn't start to be used for recording music until a few years after World War II. Prior to this time, all sound recordings were made straight to a shellac master disk, essentially a 78 RPM master record, that was used to produce masters, which stamped the records. Recording to tape improved the sound quality by an order of magnitude, but that wasn't an option in the 1930s, which is when these 4 "bad sounding" selections came from. It could be worse. In the early 1920s it became possible to use electric microphones, which was a huge leap forward over the old analog method of recording, where a singer or band played or sang into a big horn that was used to create a shellac master disc. If you think 1930s recordings sound bad, well, you probably won't like to hear Caruso's recordings for example. He died before the "electric age of recording" began. I have listened to enough music prior to the 1950s to know that what we have on this CD is actually pretty good as far as reproducing sound from old 78s goes. Frankly, I think the engineers at RCA should be commended for doing such a good job.
So what of the music? I would argue that the worst sounding recording is not the Koussevitzky version, but the Morton Gould piano version. I've never heard anything quite like it. Towards the end Gould pounds the keys so hard he almost turns the piano into a drum. The 1932 recording technology can't adequately reproduce his sound and it strains to try, but it is an amazingly wild recording that I enjoyed.
The Munch conducted version with the BSO is very well played, but to me it's a little too workman-like. Tomita's synthesizer version is maybe a little too electronic, although not bad. The piano duo of Fray and Braggiotti do a good job of playing the song on 2 pianos. The fox trot version by Shilkret starts out sounding like every cheesy 1930s film song you've ever heard, but somehow by the end the group pulls it together and it actually starts to work. Glennie's version didn't really work for me. It's too middle of the road. Mata's version is very well played, although I prefer a faster tempo.
What of the rest? I loved Koussevitzky's version. It starts off soooo sloooowwww, but the tempo increases and by the end it has very successfully built to the climax. The Canadian Brass version was truly excellent. I can't believe that it is only brass and a snare drum because it sounds like so much more. Arthur Fiedler's version is only 7 and a half minutes, but I give him credit. He packs everything into his version. It's worth noting that Fiedler was trained by Koussevitzky. Fiedler's recording is from 1953 and is a picture perfect example of the kind of excellent sound RCA engineers were famous for in the "High Fidelity era". It may be mono, but what a glorious sounding recording it is.
As a historical overview of Bolero you get:
3 orchestral recordings (1930s, 1950s, 1980s)
1 shortened "pops" version
1 synthesizer version
1 percussion version
1 brass version
1 fox trot version
2 piano versions
In all, plenty of Bolero to compare and enjoy.
Bolero-MADNESS!.......2001-05-17
This is one fantastic CD!!!!
Ten versions of Maurice Ravel's masterpiece "Bolero". You may ask yourself, "Isn't it repeatitive as much as it is?". That may be true, but this CD won't make you think about how repeatitive it is, it's that great. But do they all sound the same???
Not exactly, Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony Orchestra play it about dancing speed. The total time is 13:48, compared to its original approx. of 15 minutes. So this version of the full orchestra is slightly faster than one thinks.
Isao Tomita on the synthesizer sounds well...different. People may think it will be great because of the glamour of it being a synthesizer, but it's not as great you would think. If you're a fan of Bolero's monster conclusion, this is an extreme dissapointment because the performer does weird things with the synthesizer that make the work (in my opinion) sound like Ravel himself would hate hearing it. But you may like it, thats just my opinion.
Jacques Fray & Mario Braggiotti on two pianos, despite the poor recording quaility since it is from 1934 is pretty good. This is probably one of the better interpretations on the disc. The performers add a little harmony into some of the melody's chords, which I think people will like.
Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.....ouch! This is probably the worst recording quality on the whole disc! (It was recorded in 1930) To me, the conclusion doesn't sound "extreme" enough. It's almost like the members of the orchestra are rushing the piece so they can get out of performing and run out on hot dates. But since Bolero is only 2 years old at the time it was recorded, you may like it.
Nat Shilkret & His Orchestra playing Bolero-Fox Trot in 4/4 time is once again a poor recording, but its an interesting interpretation of its melody. I found this one as one of the better tracks.
Morton Gould on piano, does this guy know what the definition of tone is??? I've played piano for 8 years and this guy is a composer and even I know what tone is. It's the last poor recording from the 30's on the CD. It starts out well, but he adds a few glissandos, which sound great, but then takes his left hand and just bangs on a bunch of low notes while his right hand is pounding the melody. It ends with a bunch of pounding. (kind of like the sound of an immature kid banging on a grand piano).
Authur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra almost sounds like the 1st track, but it has a few cuts and is only 7 1/2 minutes. But you may like this one especially because its recorded well and it's much shorter. This recording is one of my favorites and its one of the best on the disc. If you like the Boston Pops, you're in luck.
The Canadian Brass arrangement by Sonny Kompanek is in a different key than the original C Major. It has great recording quaility and the brass players are amazing. Very good work on this version!
Evelyn Glennie's percussion version is quite good and if you play a percussion instrument this track will steals the whole CD. Its that good. It starts out with a single snare drum and will eventually work its way up to more instruments. Many percussion instruments used. Gong, cymbals, snare, bells, xylophone, etc.
My personal favorite (ha ha, save the best for last) is Eduardo Mata and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. It's 14:49, the whole sha-bang. It's at the prefered right speed and each soloist does an outstanding job. The last time where all the instruments are playing its drum beats, the melody doesn't blow out your ears by the trumpets, the tone is relaxing but it's still loud. And yes, trumpets are still playing its melody. The conclusion is probably the best on this track. It contains a pounding timpani(literally pounding), a giant cymbal crash, and the aweing sound of a gong. Probably the best track on the whole disc.
So if you're a fan of this masterpiece I would suggest buying it, despite some of the recording quailities. Eventually, you'll find out a favorite version. The price should be higher because of how great it is, so get it while its set at a price just right.
For the Historians..........2000-07-01
This is definitely in the category of "rare compilations." There are 3 "standard" renditions of Bolero, plus 7 alternate arrangements, many from nearly seventy years ago. Among the alternates are a percussion version, two versions for piano, a 4/4 Foxtrot version(!), a Tomita synthesizer version, and a short orchestral one. Be prepared to hear several recordings copied from 78 rpm records. In the interest of preserving sound quality, they did NOT take profound noise-reduction steps on those. One glaring omission: Ravel's self-conducted version from January 1930 was a classic that is mysteriously missing here. Note that you will not find sterling orchestral renditions here (alas all the trombonists fail to nail the glissandi) but you WILL find recordings of special historical significance. It reminds us that the world was crazy about this song when it was new. If you're a fan of Ravel, 20th century orchestral music, or just a music historian, you should not pass this up; I don't know that some of these recordings are available anywhere else.
Terrible Transfer to CD.......2000-06-29
Anyone considering this CD is certainly a fan of Ravel and Bolero. This CD certainly has it's ups and downs. In looking at the CD, four of the ten tracks were originally recorded for 78rpm LPs. Then, there is a footnote, "these masters have been optimally transferred to tape. Radical methods to eliminate all surface noise have not been used in order to preserve the full-frequency content of the original records."
Allow me to translate this into normal English, the origianals for these tracks (tracks 3-6) are basically in such bad shape that they could not be salvaged. With this in mind, I basically purchased a CD with 6 tracks. My stereo system is very reveiling of noise on CDs, and these tracks are garabage. The synthesizer version is not that impressive. however, the end of the CD radically changed my mind upward. The Canadian Brass do a marvious interpretation of Bolero. Also, Evelyn Glennie has a unique percussion arangement. These two tracks are the best part of the CD. The full orchestra variations are relatively similar and tradition. This CD is not one to buy if you plan on sitting down and seriously comparing performances of Bolero. However, several of the tracks make the disk almost worth owning, if you truly love this song.
Bolero...any taste, color or blend is good.......2000-06-22
Bravo! Bravo! As a Bolero fanatic I love this new CD and am sure that any lover of Ravel and his Bolero will agree. The styles, intent and choreography of the the music is evident in every track. Each music conductor and symphony brings different delights to our audio table.
Fieldler is Mr. POP and it shows in his rendition of the title piece. All of the conductors show their own insite into Ravel and the Bolero. I have often wanted to hear side by side comparisons of my favorite pieces and this is a grand step one. My hat is off to BMG. As always on track and a set ahead.

hdcd sampler 2.......2007-01-12
Sound is very good on the home stereo. Perfect if you have a hdcd player. Sounds really good on the discman as well. This disc has a longer playing time than the first.
HDCD adds sound value.......2002-07-15
I bought this CD to go shopping for high end speakers. Not knowing really what HDCD was or how it sounds. Well, I also took along regular 16/44 CDs as well.
Conclusion: huge difference in sound... I would say moderately improved dynamic range, but more importantly, the resolution of the sound. You can hear (on track 3) the chorus taking breaths... and on certain systems even individuals taking breaths at fractionally separate points in time during a rest beat.
With good electronics and your preferred selection, and I mean near reference quality electronics, the HDCD sound MOVES you. I don't know how SACD sounds, but when I get my new room together, HDCD is definitely going to be there.
FYI, I listened to HDCD on a mark levinson 390S... so HDCD had the benefit of excellent D/A.
My immediate favourites are tracks 2 and 3. I must go find more Russian vocal type stuff... very cool sounds. Track 2 (Vikings) is amazing... the pipe organ wants to bring down the house if you run it thru 350w/channel and Wilson Watt Puppies.
I Was Skeptical, but Hearing is Believing.......2001-04-06
I bought a Toshiba 5109 last year for the progressive component video capability. I knew that it had a HDCD decoder but that fact didn't make much of an impression at the time. I didn't buy it for that reason and it wasn't a factor in my evaluation of DVD players. I was wrong, it should have been.
Two months ago my interest in possibly buying a SACD and DVD-Audio player caused me to take a look at this older but more established 2-channel technology...
I bought a couple classical recordings of some favorite works (various Copland and the Bruckner 9th) that were well reviewed. I was stunned at how exceptionally good they sounded, as close to a live performance in a good hall in a good seat as I have ever experience in non-live setting, but was this the exceptional quality of the recoding engineering only or was the HDCD technology a factor, too?
The final proof was this sampler, which has comparisons of the same material in regular 16-bit format and HDCD. I can't begin to describe the incredible difference it makes. I hesitate to say it, but the words "profound difference" comes to immediately to mind.
I had always been skeptical about audiophile comments about how something was lost when the industry moved away from analog vinyl to CD format. I no longer am.
One caution if you play this CD, track 7 has exceptionally wide dynamic range. Luckily, I am cautious and my system can handle huge transients, but I think I may have melted the windows near one of my speakers -grin-, the brass sound is white hot.
I can see why Microsoft purchased this technology.

If you're tired of lowest-common-denominator punk bands, McLusky Do Dallas is the album you're looking for. The incendiary British trio invites comparisons with everyone from Nirvana to the Fall. They specialize in the short, sharp songs that clock in around two minutes, but go some way to reinventing the very viscera of punk rock. The opening track is a case in point, as an explosion of cymbals and nodule-inducing vocal ferocity invite comparisons with post-hardcore merchants Shellac discovering a catchy pop hook. (Perhaps it's no coincidence that Shellac frontman Steve Albini is credited on production duties.) Raw, fearless songs land with terrifying consistency. The most fascinating track is "Fuck This Band," a quiet meditation on the nature of rock music. Equal parts brains, brawn, and pure righteousness, McLusky Do Dallas is unstoppable. --Louis Pattison

Good, And Not In A British Way.......2007-04-10
The British music press seem to have an affinity with "home grown" bands, perhaps because us Limeys like tryers, and mediocre people are always at their best. The music industry praise bands that have broken America (sold more than 10,000 albums), forgetting that some Americans have cloth ears, too.
2002 was the year of Coldplay, the Stereophonics, Radiohead Mk.3. (i.e., without the tunes) and Travis. All deeply mediocre music for sure, and without the edge to their art to actually risk offending anyone (if you are offended by Chris Martin you really need to get out more).
McLusky, by contrast, sound like noisy, uncouth yobs who have chips on their shoulders the size of Idaho: and who on this album at least wrote some really good songs. The very fact that the fact it is produced by Steve Albini is not its biggest selling point is noteworth (although obviously not its biggest selling point). They also seem to be having hefty digs at their compatriots Sterophonics and The Lostprohets as well, which can't be bad.
Seek this out!.......2006-05-31
If you're looking for the best Pixies record since Nevermind....here it is. Ferocious record. WAY catchy. Damn shame they never broke bigger.
The Best Album of the Decade.......2006-05-16
Thus far at least. What Mclucky do better than anyone is make art rock that actually rocks, and has pop sensibilities. The distortion, speed, and vocals all point to punk, but at the same time the album sounds more avante garde and daring than most punk. Kind of like the Jesus Lizard trying to cover the early Clash. This album just plain shreds, but with a pop sensibility. I can'treally put my finger on the sound exactly, except to say it rocks, rocks hard, and anybody who enjoys hard rock, from the 70's or hardcore or anytime, should get this.
Mclusky's best.......2005-10-06
Can't ask for much more out of a rock cd than this. Best thing I've heard in years. The whole album plays great from start to finish (I should note that there are three tracks I don't like as much as the others but the rest are quality). The lyrics are hysterical and the riffs are engaging. Strangely enough, this album sounds intense to the untrained ear but after repeated listens, I found the songs to be borderline poppy, catchy, and accessible. Don't write it off as just another hardcore rock act that only a select few "get". If you enjoy metal/punk/hard rock, I don't think Mclusky is that far off from these genres and chances are you'd probably enjoy this as well. Give it a shot.
the sonic equivalent of raw meat.......2004-11-23
I think this might be the only album I know that sustains itself on sheer attitude. It's a big sloppy obscene masterpiece. The songwriting is dubious; the talent is spotty; the production is messy. And yet...when I hear lyrics like "We do more drugs than a touring funk band," Mclusky sell the line with such unabashed screaming raw-throated decadence that I suddenly become transported to eerie bizarro planet where Mclusky have talent and I am unwaveringly convinced of their genius.
This is a rare album where I never skip a single track. Some are admittedly weaker than others, and the album is slightly front-loaded with the best songs: "Lightsabre ****sucking Blues", "Collagen Rock", "Day of the Deadringers," "To Hell With Good Intentions." Towards the end, tracks like "Clique Application Form" are too studied in their rebellion, and "Allen is a Cowboy Killer" too calculated in its attempt to please. The album also mysteriously discovers actual melody on tracks like "F*** This Band" (which despite the title, is actually the album's only ballad), but located at the midpoint, the song actually brings a welcome respite from the wall of noise, which is always just on the cusp of bleeding into the red.

Testament of Freedom.......2007-07-12
I sung the Testament in a men chorus in 1966.Most of the men were veterans as was I. I only wish the powers to be would include it in the July celebration in Washington D.C.
Wonderful Piece of Americana.......2007-01-27
I bought, and was very disappointed in, the New York Choral Society's recording of "Testament of Freedom" a couple of years ago. The diction was indisctinct, the voices were overpowered by the instruments, and the sound in general left a lot to be desired. I was delighted when I accidentally stumbled on this CD and found out that "Testament of Freedom" was included.
The Turtle Creek Chorale does an excellent job with the title piece. The vocal sound of the group is wonderfully rich, and the balance between the instruments and voices is about as good as you can get with a piece that calls for such a large instrumental ensemble. Plus, I prefer the men's choir arrangement of "Testament," largely because I remember singing it for Region Choir auditions over 10 years ago. My only complaint is that in some parts of "We Have Counted the Cost," it's hard to understand the words if you don't already know them; same thing with "We Fight Not For Glory." But these are minor quibbles.
"Testament" is a must-own CD for any American music lover, as it feautures the work of a criminally-underperformed composer. It's worth buying for the performance "Testament of Freedom" alone, although all the tracks are excellent, particularly the "Alleluia". 5 out of 5.
A Great Recording of Great Choral Works.......2006-01-02
I had to write this review because it is a crime that this wonderful CD has a ho-hum overall rating just because one of the two previous reviewers didn't bother to find out what it was before he ordered. Yes, Amazon had it mislabled (it's better now, but still misleading by putting Bernstein's name first), but I had no trouble figuring out that it was a men's ensemble. In fact, that's the primary reason I chose this CD.
The feature work on this CD is the "Testament of Freedom" by Randall Thompson. For this work, Mr. Thompson chose to set various writings of Thomas Jefferson to music. In doing so, he has helped preserve these sometimes forgotten texts and at the same time, demonstrated why he is one of America's best loved choral composers. Unfortunately, there are not many recordings of this work, and many of those you'll find are sung by mixed choirs. This work was intended for, and sounds best when sung by, a men's chorus. That alone sets this CD apart.
The biggest weakness of this recording is the balance between the wind ensemble and the chorus. In the forte sections, the chorus gets drowned out a bit. That's always a danger in master works, particularly when you pit voices against winds. However, I found this to be a minor flaw and have heard much worse examples.
I recommend this CD for all who love choral music and particularly for those who have yet to experience the music of Randall Thompson. It is also interesting to note that the words of Thomas Jefferson, written so long ago, still ring true in these trying times (especially the third and fourth passages).

Lyrics:
The Testament of Freedom
Text: Thomas Jefferson
The God who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time; the hand of force may destroy but cannot disjoin them.
---A Summary View of the Rights of British America (1774)
We have counted the cost of this contest, and find nothing so dreadful as voluntary slavery. Honor, justice, and humanity forbid us tamely to surrender that freedom which we received from our gallant ancestors, and which our innocent posterity have a right to receive them from us. We cannot endure the infamy and guilt of resigning succeeding generations to that wretchedness which inevitably awaits them if we basely entail heredity bondage upon them. Our cause is just. Our union perfect. Our internal resources are great...We gratefully acknowledge, as signal instances of the Divine favor towards us, that His Providence would not permit us to be called into this severe controversy until we were grown up to our present strength, and been previously exercised in warlike operation, and possessed of the means of defending ourselves. With hearts fortified with these animating reflections, we most solemnly, before God and the world, declare that, exerting the utmost energy of those powers which we have been compelled by our enemies to assume, we will, in defiance of every hazard, with unabating firmness and perseverance, employ for the preservation of our liberties; being with one mind resolved to die freemen rather than to live as slaves.
---Declaration of Causes and Necessity of Taking up Arms (1775)
We fight not for glory or for conquest. We exhibit to mankind the remarkable spectacle of a people attacked by unprovoked enemies, without any imputation or even suspicion of offense. They boast of their privilege and civilization, and yet proffer no milder conditions than servitude or death. In our native land, in defense of the freedom that is our birthright and which we ever enjoyed until the late violation of it; for the protection of our property, acquired by the honest industry of our forefathers and ourselves; against violence actually offered; we have taken up arms. We shall lay them down when hostilities shall cease on the part of the aggressors and all danger of their being renewed shall be removed, and not before.
---Declaration of Causes and Necessity of Taking up Arms (1775)
I shall not die without hope that light and liberty are on steady advance... And even should the cloud of barbarism and despotism again obscure the science and liberties of Europe, this country remains to preserve and restore light and liberty to them... The flames kindled on the 4th of July, 1776, have spread over too much of the globe to be extinguished by the feeble engines of despotism; on the contrary, they will consume these engines and all who work them.
---Letter to John Adams, Monticello (1821)
One of my favorite CD's.......2005-08-10
The actual title of this CD is Testament, and the principle performing group is the Dallas-based Turtle Creek Chorale. I am perplexed by Amazon's listing this magnificent recording under a generic descriptive title and then naming the accompanying Dallas Wind Symphony as the only "performer." Someone must have been asleep at the wheel.
Now to the recording itself -- I love choral music, and am especially drawn to male voices. I even enjoy hearing all-male college glee clubs singing their boisterous drinking songs. What a joy then to happen upon this recording which features strong, well trained voices in addition to exquisite pieces of music, some of which are among my favorites. The highlight of the CD for me is Randall Thompson's, "Testament of Freedom." The CD is worth its price just for this one 24-minute jewel. The rest is like tasty icing on a cake.
Disappointing.......2002-02-20
I was disappointed with this album. First, it did not notice that the Turtle Creek Chorale is an all male ensemble. ... Secondly, the quality of the recording is poor. The sound is muddy and lacks brightness. I had to turn my stereo way up just to hear it. The orchestra sounds great, but the mix of the voices is very poor. I definately do not recommend.
