Mark Schultz
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Good music comes from the heart, and Mark Schultz's debut album has plenty of thatt. His original attempts to jump-start a musical career by moving to Nashville were to no avail, so instead he took a position as youth pastor in a local church. Inspired by his newfound ministry, he began writing songs about experiences he had with his youth group. A cloud of eager fans soon surrounded him. Only then did he receive the industry attention he had once sought out. Drawing on the producing talent of Monroe Jones, Schultz's musical journey has embarked on a new path. This self-titled project combines energized showmanship and heart-wrenching ballads. His voice is like the white-water crest of a wave. Its unique intensity is the force that leads the music onward. As well, his buoyant piano style brings a welcome flavor to the straight-up pop sound of this album. Drum loops, layered vocals, and soaring guitars add to the intrigue. His first single, "I Am the Way," was written as a theme song to kick off a new year of youth meetings. No doubt that year opened with a bang. --Israel Button --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

May God bless Mark for Everything to Me.......2007-06-17
I absolutely love the songs on this album. They have impacted my life. Just a couple days ago, I heard Everything to Me for the first time, and I had to go out and buy the whole album. If you know anyone who has been or needs to be impacted by adoption, let them hear this song. If you can, let them watch the video online. As a mother to three adopted children (which we have open adoptions with the birth families), it is such a blessing to have a song that can thank the birth mothers for their incredible gift and that can let people know that birth mothers don't abandon their children, they love them forever. Thank you, Mark, for your ministry. May the Lord bless you.
Broken and Beautiful IS Beautiful!.......2007-05-12
This has become my new favorite CD and Mark Schultz is my new favorite artist. I loved this CD so much that I bought all of the others he has done. The music is memorable and the lyrics are so touching. I am so glad I made this purchase!
I Like his Music.......2007-04-08
I love the CD can't wait to get his Book he wrote!!!!!!!!!!!!
He has done it again!.......2007-04-08
This CD is just awesome! In some ways it is very different from Mark's other CDs, but at the same time it includes several story telling songs that have made me cry, like the others he has put out.
After 3 years of hearing partial versions of "Walking Her Home", it is finally finished, and done masterfully.
Mark is a very personable artist, and that comes through on this CD. It is a wonderful witness of Christ's love and offers a little bit of everything music wise.
I am very glad to add this to my collection.
I love it!.......2007-03-14
I love the song broken and beautiful! If by chance I don't have the cd in and listening to the radio, if that song comes on, I pop my cd in to listen to it a second time!

A Wonderful CD.......2007-05-13
This is a wonderful inspirational CD. Mark Schultz is a wonderful story teller and sings with deep compassion. I would highly recommend this CD.
ANOTHER winner!.......2006-07-11
I was wondering how Mark Schultz was going to top his previous two CDs, but he's done it. This CD is so incredibly moving. "Letters From War" is a profound, non-traditional (but NOT trite) tribute to our military men and women. I've listened to that song about 100 times, and I STILL cry at it. Every song will either amuse you, challenge you, or move you in some way. "Running Just to Catch Myself" ALWAYS makes me laugh--he has the modern "professional" lifestyle described to a "T". Again, there isn't a song in the whole CD that I ever want to skip over whenever I listen to it. The songs are so thoughtful as well as thought-provoking. He really has mastered the art of storytelling; you'll hang on every word. This is an absolute MUST in any music collection. I always find myself trying to hook others on Mark Schultz, and so far all of my friends and family I've played his CDs for have become fans. He is absolutely addicting!
Best C.D Ever!!!!.......2006-03-10
I would like to start off saying that this is a wonderful C.D,but I'm going to write this review on one paticular song,"Letters From War".
This is the best song ever writen!!!My Language Arts teacher loves poetry. She prints out the words to songs she likes. She says they'll teach us a lesson and that they are a lot like poems.Anyways, she prints out the words to paticular songs and passes them out to the class and tells us to follow along while she plays the song.Oneday she brought in "letters From War" and she almost cried.
I love this song!!!Way to go Mark Schultz!!! Also, thanks to my Language Arts teacher or I probally would have never found it. Best song ever!!! Buy it!!!!!
A Masterpiece.......2005-10-13
Mark Shultz has cut an amazing CD, in Stories and Songs. This album is a masterpiece, and I'm surprised there are so few reviews here.
The music is pretty high-energy. The performances are great. The arrangements and mixing, by Brown Bannister, is terrific. It reminds me of the old masterpiece, A Tramp Shining, by Richard Harris/Jimmy Webb, with its fullness of sound.
But the star of the show is the words. Mark is a rarely gifted songwriter, who can bring out the meaning in ordinary life stories. He devotes himself to three main themes and their interdependency: relationship, identity, and the use of time.
The album starts out with the themes of relationship and identity, in You Are a child of mine. Mark writes that when he's “overcome with loneliness”, God's voice reassures him that he is dearly loved. Identity is found in one's relationship to God.
The second song, Everywhere, describes that relationship as being both in the very depths of our being and everywhere we go.
Letters from war is an amazingly powerful song, again about relationship, and about the power of prayer. A widow's son is captured in war. His letters to her end, but hers to him continue each night, for she is writing letters from her own war, as she fights for her son's life in prayer: “Bring him home!”, she entreats. If you have something you need to go to war for in prayer, this song will inspire you. SPOILER: This song gripped me at first, because for a brief moment it seems the son is lost.
Do you even know me anymore? - again about relationship, but this time that theme is mixed with the theme of our use of time. A man has set his own worldly goals, but has neglected his family to the point that he doesn't know them anymore. And then in an poignant turn, he discovers he no longer knows himself, and then finally despairs that God even knows him. This is powerful stuff.
Time that is left – Now the theme of use of time is front and center. How will we deal with things past, present, and future? “Will they say that we loved till our final breath?” We are given the key to how to respond in the oft-repeated refrain, which consists simply of the universal praise word, Hallelujah. If we devote ourselves to the Lord, our lives will work out.
Running just to catch myself – an amazingly creative, hectic song about life in the rat race. One of the funniest songs I've heard in a long time. Mark is spoofing the pressures this life brings us, and challenging us to live above them.
It's been a long time – about staying close to the Lord and not wasting our time on things that don't matter. This song had to grow on me a bit, but it is excellent. The arrangement, the instruments and background vocals, reminds me of some of Phil Specter's work with the Beatles.
He will carry me – along with Child and Letters, a contender for best song of the album. Though strong in most of the songs here, this one above the others brings out the use of dynamical contrast. Low, painful brooding is set against a triumphant declaration that whatever we go through the Lord will be there with us. Relationship again.
Just to know you – a challenge to live life to know Christ, just as He lived and gave His all to know us. Time and relationship again. “I want to finish strong”.
Closer To You – a song of dedication to the Lord. We find not only all our answers in Him, we find who we are.
Reprise – Time That Is Left – a rockin' jam on the earlier cut. At first I wondered why this was chosen to repeat, but then I saw that the album ends on a challenge to us. What will we do with the time that's left? We have a choice to make.
Few albums achieve the level of creativity and power of this one. The writing, the arrangements, the performances, the mixing, are all simply world-class. In the sea of mediocrity that contemporary music, even CCM, is, this album stands out. I don't think you will regret getting a copy. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to mine. Congrats to Mark and all for a work very well done.
Real and Uplifting.......2005-08-02
Once again Mr. Schultz proves that he is a fantastic songwriter! Not only can the guy write a song, he then sings with emotion that many singers have difficulty conveying----probably because so many singers don't believe what they are singing. Also, when you read the CD liner, you get the sense that this is a real and genuine guy, who is moving through life, searching for meaning, just like the rest of us.

Remember Me.......2007-05-07
Mark Schultz has an incredible voice. My favorite song on the album is "Remember Me", which he harmonizes with Ginny Owens. He has a talent for capturing raw emotions in his lyrics and melodies, as in "He's My Son".
Mark Schultz.......2007-02-06
The best song on the CD for me is "He's my son". I lost my son to cancer, a brain tumor, when he was only 28 months old - that song put words to all the emotion of the time and heped me greatly. His music is spritual and healing to me.
Love this album.......2007-01-04
I love the first song on this album. And the rest of the songs aren't too bad either.
Stellar debut!.......2006-07-11
Friends of mine bought tickets for all of us to see Mark Schultz about 5 years ago. I had no idea who he was, only that he was a "new" Contemporary Christian musician. I cringe at that label, because there is so much garbage out there that calls itself "Christian". I figured that I ought to know the songs, so I took a listen at the samples on Amazon. Even from those short snippets, I knew he was something special. I ran out the same day and bought the CD. Every song is worth listening to! I love his mastery of the piano, and his voice is incredible. He is one of those rare songwriting masters, also. He can tell a great story in his music, and not only are you wanting to hear the music, you'll find yourself dying to know how the story ends. He'll make you laugh and cry. This CD is not to be missed; and I don't just mean for Christian music fans, either!
A great album..........2006-06-20
I first became familiar with the music of Mark Schultz when I heard "Remember Me" at a friend's wedding. Shortly thereafter, I bought this album and have since become a big Mark Schultz fan.
My favorite songs are "He's My Son," "Legend of McBride," and "Remember Me," though several others are also fantastic.
Schultz has a great voice, fantastic abilities on the piano, and a brilliant mind for songwriting. I have enjoyed more recent releases of his on the radio. I would recommend this album to anyone.

Mark Schultz is truly an incredible hidden talent that is finally getting some recognition. I purchased this cd and was completely blown away! His dvd that is included in this cd package gives background info to many of the stories. Highly Recommend! WOW! What will he do next to keep up with the quality and talent he demonstrated here??!!!
Mark Schultz.......2007-02-17
Loved this DVD. Mark Schultz has such a great personality and it comes out in this CD/DVD.
Sorry, but I can't review this. .......2007-01-09
I think it was a post office problem and I've contacted the post office about thrie having said that they received the package....because I've never received it. I don't know what else I can do.
I had to put a star rating on this review or the Amazon server wouldn't let me post. Please ignore it. I have no idea how to rate it.
Awesome CD/DVD!.......2006-12-09
"Mark Schultz Live: A Night of Stories and Songs" is incredible, and very uplifting. Mark tells the stories behind many of his greatest songs, and also talks about how he got to where he is. It really surprises me that a talent scout told him: "This may not be what you're supposed to do" after he listened to a few of Mark's songs, because Mark Schultz has become my favorite artist of all time. I think that what happened with Mark Schultz is a testimony about what can happen when you listen to God instead of other people. I've been there a few times myself, except sometimes I listened to people instead of God, and I have regretted it every single time. Mark didn't give up after his meeting with the talent scout, and I'm glad he didn't.
A number of his songs have really hit home with me. "Closer To You" really hit me when my cousin passed away after a twelve year fight with cancer. It hit me hard enough that I typed the lyrics as I listened to the song, printed them out, and posted them at my cousin's grave site. I heard "Letters From War" a month before my brother was scheduled to leave for Iraq (He made it home safe by the way), so the first time, it was salt in an open wound; but the more I listened to it, the more I liked it, because I felt like God was saying: "My son, you've got to trust Me. I will look after your brother, so don't worry."
Mark Schultz truly has a Christian background, and he demonstrates his love and appreciation for Christ, as well as for everyone in his life who helped to support him. [...] should give customers the option to give 100 stars, because a 5 star rating does not even come close to giving him his due credit. Mark Schultz is AWESOME!
AWESOME.......2006-09-12
This CD/DVD combo is the best gift I could have gotten for myself. I had wanted to get a CD of Mark's that had his newest song 'I am' on it, and when I found out that this one was live and also had some of his older songs included, I had to grab this one off the shelf. His voice has such passion and emotion in it, his music lifts me up and makes me feel so good and happy.... his music truly is beautiful. I can't say enough good things about him.
I have LOVED his music ever since he was introduced with the song 'I am the Way' on the Wow 2001 CD.

Song Cinema.......2007-02-17
I love Mark Schultz and this is a great album for Christian Folk/Rock
Another gem!.......2006-07-11
This is Mark Schultz's second studio album, and is proof positive that he is no "flash in the pan". His sound is unique, and he is a bona fide Songwriter with a capital "S"! He does not bow down to trendy-sounding pop music, but reveals his strength by being simply who he is. I would recommend this even to people who are not Christian music fans, simply because he is brilliant at his craft. I don't doubt that someday one of his songs will bridge over and find its way onto the mainstream charts.
Blew me away.......2005-02-03
His lyrics...the emotion he puts into each and every song...I have cried on so many occasions listening to some of his songs...and the lyrics hit so close to home. This man is a wonderful artist.
Mark Schultz Rocks!.......2005-01-04
This CD is great. I still listen to this CD from time and time and I'm blessed by it. "I Have Been There" speaks clearly of Christ's love for us and reminds me that He truly does know what it's like to face trials in this world.
Great man, Great music!.......2004-11-02
I saw him in concert and he was just awesome! He's a very humble man that loves to tell stories about how Jesus touched that person's life. His voice reminds me of the lead singer of the mainstream band Styx. I love the CD and can play it over and over again! I highly recommend this CD!

--Israel Button
Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking.......2003-03-06
This is one of the finest albums I've ever purchased (and I have just short of 1000 in my collection). From start to finish it will take you from heartwrenching pain to jubilant praise, with some just plain fun (e.g. Legend of McBride) along the way. Mark's vocals are nothing short of inhuman and his delivery sublime. There are few albums that are truly "must have". This is one.
AWESOME!.......2002-02-10
Beautiful lyrics moving songs. My absolute favorite song on this album is "He's my son". Beautiful heart rending and amazing. If you want an album that lifts you up and speaks to your soul this is it. Not to mention the incredible piano playing and Mark's incredible voice. This is must have CD.
Mark Shultz is AMAZING!!.......2002-02-02
I actuallly have not heard the whole CD but I am very familiar with one song. "He's My Son" is the most amazing song I have ever listened to in my entire life! I have a son who had Brain cancer and this song meant the world to me. Give it a listen and you'll see!!
Exceptional, truly awe inspiring.......2002-01-22
There is not one lack-luster cut on the entire cd. However, my absolute favorite is "Remember me". Wonderful keyboard, vocal, artistry...Truly Mark, Ginny, you both are blessed and we are blessed with you. Keep up the great work!
Excellent!.......2002-01-19
This is an excellent CD. My family recently went through the death of my 22-year-old cousin after a short and unexpected illness. During my cousin's hospitalization, my brother and I both found ourselves listening to several of Mark's songs - "He's My Son," "Remember Me" and "I Have Been There." (The first two are from this album, the latter from his latest, Song Cinema.) These songs have strengthened and comforted us during a very difficult situation.

Post-modern Flim-flam.......2006-03-29
I checked this out from my local library. Needless to say, I am elated I did not buy it. How is that people actually receive record deals to record this kind of, uh, noise???
Great ideas, great CD.......2006-03-29
I recently witnessed Todd Reynolds perform at my school. It was amazing. While this type of music may not be for everyone, Todd Reynolds, Luke DuBois, and many others have continued to push ahead experimenting and creating new pieces. It might be a little easier to understand and appreciated the music on this cd if these men are studied a little. For instance, Todd Reynolds is an incredibly talented violinist who could play all the greatest concertos, but he wanted to find his own niche in the music world, quoting his exact words, "Bach and Mozart will be fine without me."
Out of all the pieces on this Cd, "Light is Calling" is the one I enjoy the most. You can put this cd in your computer and it will play a video that this piece accompianies. I feel that it is important to know a little history about this film. Luke Bill Morrison took a black and white film on decaying acetate and, knowing that it would burn up from the heat of the projector, decided to record while it played (and burned). Todd Reynolds composed a piece that is beautiful and fits the film well. Together these men have made new art out of an old piece of art. To me, this film seems like a memory. I would recommend this to anyone who has an interest.
Visceral Minimalism at Last.......2005-09-29
I've never been a big fan of minimalist expressions in classical music. Composers like LaMonte Young and Terry Riley seem completely preoccupied with their "theory" rather than the music itself. As if the obesity of the concept nudges aesthetics out of the score. Surprisingly, a whole generation of talented young composers inspired by the minimalists have been making really beautiful, economical music. Michael Gordon and others seem determined not to make the same boring mistakes. And what's really great about Michael Gordon's Light Is Calling is that he doesn't seem to be trying to subvert any antiquated ideas about music, he's just trying to affect you.
The album begins with a rhythm and strings piece, "Tinge." Some computer arranged industrial rhythms are quickly followed by a panicky melody, punctuated by nod-your-head-here staccato bursts. "My Frig" is a relatively cheery song. Gordon uses a descending violin slide for texture, very different from his Decasia symphony. "Receiver" sounds at times like an homage to Tubeway Army, followed by "Idle" which sounds something like Henry Flynt's avant-fiddle sampled into a Coil beat. The title track is beautiful, with some quiet bubbling samples giving way to a simple, somber violin solo. The song builds a bit but maintains it's simplicity, finally careening into itself and sliding apart. The CD also features a short movie set to this song. I'm assuming it's made by Bill Morrison, it features decaying footage of a couple dancing, much like Decasia.
My only complaint is the electronic/computer aspect. It's mostly pretty boring stuff, and it doesn't mesh well with the rest of the arrangements. Most of, but not all the beats sound like stock sounds on an outdated program. I should say it's not all bad, I like the result on "Instrumental" for instance. But electronica was invented by composers, you'd think they'd be making more interesting stuff by now. It's symptomatic of most of the contemporary composers mixing electronic and classical. The weird thing is, they all seem to think they're doing really great new stuff with rhythm. I picture these guys sitting around listening to UFOrb all day and talking about how to "deconstruct the electro-classical dichotomy."
Ostensibly, Gordon is one of these academics who feels just as at home in the underground scene as he does in the academy. With the exception of the intimacy of this record, that duality is unfortunately not well represented here. Actually, Decasia is a much better execution of this. Still, along with Max Richter's Blue Notebooks, Light Is Calling is one of the best collections of engaging, minimalist, contemporary classical music that I know of.
