Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-09-22
The following quote is a good way to introduce this album; it is from the poem "The Singer" by Eva A. Jessye. "Because of ebon skin and humble pride,The world with hatred thrust the youth aside.....And through our grief we rise to nobler things....A well of sweetness there unbidden springs." This disc portrays the talents of two wonderful musicians: Moses Hogan, excellent pianist, creator of exciting arrangements of spirituals both for solo voice and choirs AND that countertenor
Derek Ragin with his truly lovely voice capable of great vocal technique and versatility. He has appeared in several operas; two with Michael Chance that are wondrous to listen to: Tamerlano and Agippina. Spiritual are not my favorite thing, but there are some ear-catching beauties on this one;namely:"Ole Time Religion" and "Give Me Jesus". Some others are: 'Steal Away'-'Little David Play on your Harp'-'This Little Light of Mine' and many more. Some are a cappela, some accompanied by the piano, and some by piano with choir back-up. You do not have to be a lover of spirituals to enjoy this disc. But if you are, you will be in heaven!!!!!!
I Feel the Spirit Too.......2006-08-17
Very beautiful voice, sometimes I forget that the soloist voice is that of a male singer. Would like to hear more of Moses Hogan on keyboard and his arrangements.
just excellent.......1999-06-30
Although I do not like spirituals too much, it is a must listening to this fantastic countertenor singing with Moses Hogan. For me, Derek Lee Ragin has such a brilliant voice, I never heard before in my life.
Saw the Moses Hogan chorale live in NYC and loved them!.......1998-10-16
Truly great spirituals, truly brilliant arrangements by Moses Hogan. I can't wait to collect all his CDs.

what a life!.......2000-11-20
Record "Rescue Me," marry Lester Bowie, and then get Wayne Horvitz to produce your comeback gospel album. Way cool!
Great material. The band cooks and she's got some acccomplished sidemen (Lester, Stew Cutler, Marty Ehrlich, Hamiet Bluiett, Dave Douglas et al.) playing on this record.
When I see this disk in a used CD store I buy and give it to a friend. It is that kind of record.

Customer Reviews:
The evolution of a great singer........2002-12-03
In her lifetime of 96 years, American contralto Marian Anderson was celebrated perhaps more as a crusader for the victims of a colour prejudice in their home country than as a gifted and well-trained singer. The emphasis was probably misplaced. When interviewed in her old age she said, "I was never a fighter". She was certainly a superb singer, as this not-to-be-missed Naxos bargain allows C21st listeners to hear.
It comprises a varied selection of items from her repertoire recorded between 1924 and 1944. The two earliest items do not show her at her best. Slow moving Negro spirituals, they cruelly expose the presence of some ugly vowel and consonant sounds at this stage of her career. Thereafter, however, and into the electric recording era, diction and tone are exemplary. Only six of the items were recorded in the USA, mostly in poor sound quality. The 1944 item, an aria from Massenet's "Le Cid", provides a glimpse into Marian Anderson's potential as an opera singer, something she was unable to realize in the USA until the very end of her career.
Of course, the item that became this singer's "signature tune" is here. Pruned of some of its music, and of the tenor counterpoint provided in its second half by Samson, the extract from "Samson et Dalila" is sung in English as "Softly awakes my heart". Once heard, this performance will gently but firmly insinuate intself into your consciousness, your memory and your soul and live with you forever.

Album Description
Exerts from the Liner Notes by Nat Hentoff ..........
In all the arts, the writers, painters, composers who have lasted and kept on resonating in our lives have their own story to tell. A personal, and therefore, original story. Charlie Parker put it best: "Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man there's no boundary line to art."
Charlie Parker was speaking about jazz horn players, but his truth applies equally to jazz singers. What you hear in Deborah Davis is the sound - a signature sound - of her experiences, in and out of music. She is a long - distance runner who has riveted audiences throughout this country, Europe and Asia. And like Bird (Mr. Parker) said, she is not limited by any boundary or category of expression, being a poet, artist, actress, dancer, lyricist, as well as unmistakably a jazz singer.
To be recognized by other musicians, and by audiences, as an authentic jazz singer, you have to possess first of all your own sound. From her roots in gospel music, blues, and jazz, she tells her stories with a disciplined personal passion, immediacy, and a mosaic of textures that are so compelling, you can still hear her after the music stops.
To express yourself in jazz time, you have to move yourself and your listeners with a flowing pulse - a beat - that is the engine of jazz. As true original, clarinetist Pee Wee Russell put it: jazz players and singers "have a heart feeling and a rhythm in their systems that you can't budge. A rhythm you can't take away from them even if they were in a symphony organization." That heart feeling, that rhythm wave, courses throughout Deborah Davis' singing in this set - from the ballads to the up tempo swingers. And because that jazz time impels her improvising, she keeps surprising herself, as well as her listeners. The title of this reverberating recording, "No Ways Tired," is very much that of her own story, in sound and spirit. Deborah is indeed no ways tired, as you can hear so vividly and infectiously in this session. "Some might have given up at this point, she says. Many I know did. But I'm still here, and still believing this is what I was put on the planet to do." ! Hearing the glory of that determination, and the powerful evidence of the truth of her very reason for being, assures that this recording will always be contemporary like the testaments of all the jazz storytellers who have lasted.
Accompanying her on this set, is a rhythm section - and front line - equal to her musicianship and spontaneity. The combination of these enlivening, multiply skilled musicians with a singer who is also indeed a musician (not all singers are) make "No Ways Tired" a celebration of the resilience of the life force that is jazz.
