5 out of 5 stars Roy Buchanan: the final frontier.......2006-07-28

This is Roy Buchanan at his most experimental and dangerous. After this album, he recorded three (quite good) straight blues albums. This one must've worn him thin. The opening track, MILES FROM EARTH (Roy doesn't feature here) sets the mood: a vast soundscape is formed as the mesmeric piano plays and the space-like synthesizers fade in and out. Anything is possible now. The next song, from the opening whip, will flatten you - TURN TO STONE. Roy hasn't rocked this hard since HEY JOE. The Joe Walsh cover then drops into a jazzy cruise before picking up where it left off with 2 mins to go. The next track, FLY NIGHT BIRD, will give you 2 minutes to breathe before the bird takes flight. Then we are given a moody blues song that betters with every listen. Though not my personal favourite, there are some amazing periods in this when Buchanan makes his guitar imitate the hovering, soaring and screeching of seagulls - again, with a backdrop that seems set in space. The next tracks, 1841 SHUFFLE and SUPERNOVA are fairly standard blues riffs that struggle to materialise because Roy's Telecaster is having a well-earned rest. DOWN BY THE RIVER however is brilliant stuff. (If you want the best RIVER experience, listen to the original by Neil Young, then this, then the live version on the SWEET DREAMS compilation)

Then the title song. Through the slow drums and bass buildup, the synthetic cries and the atmosperic keyboards, we board the ship into space. Our captain Roy Buchanan then signals liftoff with a flick of the wrist and we soar. In the unknown we discover Roy's world - his final frontier. And with 3 mins remaining, keyboards drop the platform and ring out the message that Roy Buchanan believes and we come to believe through him - that we aren't alone. When we drift through this new world with Roy's indefatigable fretwork leading the way... THE END.

5 out of 5 stars raw brilliance.......2006-05-21

I first was exposed to this recording when in 1988 my father gave it me as he purchased it thinking it was more Al Dimeola in style not rock (apologies if misspelt) I had no idea what to expect but was instantly hooked by the superb atmosphere created by the outstanding support muscians and synth backgound with his raw searing emotion packed rythym and lead playing - to this day I wwould consider this recording among the best Ive ever heard

5 out of 5 stars Landmark Recording.......2006-04-11

"You're Not Alone" was Roy Buchanan's 3rd album of his Atlantic trilogy ("A Street Called Straight" the 1st and "Loading Zone" the 2nd) and his 1st endeavor recording using a Gibson Les Paul instead of his signature wood grain Fender Telecaster. The results were phenomenal. Roy's Tele-twang transforms into a spacey soaring tone best decribed as flying, thus the airborne themes on 4 of the 7 tracks. Also using synthesizers here more extensively than on previous outings makes this album by far Roy's most unique album ever. Along with some fabulous session musicians considered some of the best are backing Roy on this one including Willie Weeks on bass and Andy Newmark on drums, who have appeared on many other successful albums. The great Luther Vandross also makes an early appearance on backing vocals.
Highlights include Joe Walsh's (Barnstorm) "Turn To Stone" lending itself to be ripped to shreds by Roy in one of his most hard rocking cuts ever.
"1841 Shuffle" was a reflection of the struggles Roy received from the Atlantic Records 1841 Broadway address bigwigs.
Neil Young's "Down By The River" had long been part of Roy's live act but is forever caught here in studio as a totally new and distinct expression unto itself. While playing off the fret board, Roy quite possibly hits his highest notes ever. Absolutely eardrum piercing.
The final track "You're Not Alone" is the ultimate proof of Roy's genius.
I would recommend all 3 albums of the Atlantic trilogy, but "You're Not Alone" is the finest of the 3 and may be the best of all Roy Buchanan albums depending on your particular taste. It is one of my favorite's for blasting in the car stereo turned up to 11 on a hot summer day.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2004-07-07

This is an excellent album from the late Roy Buchannan. I don't know all his recordings but so far consider this album his best. I came across two very different of his songs by accident: "Fly... Night Bird" (from Carl Sagan's Cosmos) and "The Messiah Will Come Again".
That got me interested enough to sample and get a couple of his collections "American Axe: Live in 1974" & "Deluxe Edition".
I was a bit dissapointed... while he is a superb virtuoso I couldn't fully appreciate those CDs as I thought.

"You are not alone" surpassed all my expectations. In this CD his playing reminds me of shared styles from David Gilmur (Marooned) , Clapton (Double Trouble), Jeff Beck (Cause we've ended as lovers...) and even Hendrix (All along the watchtower). If that rings a bell, you won't be wrong with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars TONE , TONE and more TONE.......2003-06-03

This is a great body of work by one of the greatest of all time. The title track by itself is worth the cost. Roy Buchanan was a tone master, his sound came from his soul and this a great example of his axe-man-ship. His sounds came from somewhere deep and not as a by product for record sales.

    5 out of 5 stars On God's Wind.......2005-02-16

These two albums from Dion from the early 70s represent a folk period in his career that was stunning in its expressive interpretation. I've played & replayed these on my turntable over the last 3 decades. I was so glad to get this set under the Christmas tree from my Amazon wish list. Of all the tracks, my very favorite is Dion's cover of Melanie Safka's "Close to It All" that opens "You're Not Alone." Dion's smooth delivery polished the melody exquisitely, "If I have my dream, I would fill a hall & tell all the people to tear down the walls that keeps you from being close to it all." Dion's own penned "Let Go Let God" is a soft folk ballad that reflects great spiritual peace, "Father Thomas, there's a state of peace of mind that does exist, you can make it real, man, it's yours, it's a gift." While "Jammed Up Blues" & "You Can't Judge A Book By Its Cover" are more uptempo, it's the ballads that grab me on this set. Dion's "Josie" is as catchy as it is gentle, "Josie, Josie, hold on for me, I'm coming from California to be with you, Josie. The world holds no love for a drifting boy like me. I'm travelling fast on God's wind to be with you, Josie." The set ends with the 12-step teaching that "Attraction Works Better Than Promotion." This set is extremely special for me. Dion was pulling his life together; and the music reflects this newfound gentle spirituality that still comforts me today during trying times. Bravo!

    3 out of 5 stars Something Different.......2004-06-25

After buying Born To Be With You/Streetheart,and playing it many times,I felt I had to check out this CD.Sit Down Old Friend/You're Not Alone is quite different from Born To Be With You/Streetheart.It's overall sound is quieter. You mostly hear the sound of a guitar.Especially in Sit Down Old Friend, where Dion only used a guitar for background music. He did good renditions of Beatles songs Let It Be and Blackbird.

4 out of 5 stars What A Pleasure to Listen to!.......2001-06-19

This CD is loaded with very pretty easy to listen to songs. I recently rediscovered Dion and have been stocking up on all his recordings. This is a 2 on 1 compilation of Sit Down Old Friend from 1970 and You're Not Alone from 1971. Most of the songs have an easy folk-rock feel. You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover features great Dion scat, as does The Stuff I Got, which reminds me of Daddy Rollin'. Josie is a beautiful folk song. The depth and feeling that Dion puts into Let it Be and Blackbird make The Beatles originals sound shallow. I've always thought that Paul McCartney's voice was a lot like Dion's. (Dig up a copy of Ruby Baby from 1961 and you'll see what I mean.)

The performances are good--this is the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, after all--and you get 2 full CDs, with 2 selections from "Trial by Jury", 5 from "HMS Pinafore", 9 from "The Pirates of Penzance", 9 from "Iolanthe", 12 from "The Mikado", 6 from "The Yeomen of the Guard", and 13 from "The Gondoliers". The booklet is a bit skimpy, and only lists recording dates for the first CD (1929-1949). But the sound is good, and the music is great, and at this price it's a great "greatest hits" collection.

Often American music is thought to be jaunty, combative, or tragic in content, especially when it comes to songs/lieder for the classical repertoire. This engaging CD takes umbrage with that misconception and in presenting some twenty-eight songs by various composers clearly identifies the romantic side of American composers.

Here are songs well known and not so well known by familiar and not so familiar composers, and in the hands of tenor Robert White and pianist Samuel Sanders they all come across as important. Included are rarities by composers such as Amy Beach, Theodor Chanler, Isabelle Firestone, Eric Ewazen, Albert Hay Malotte, Marc Marder, John Musto and Richard Hageman, with popular composers Rudolf Friml and Sigmund Romberg, along with the greats: Ives, Schuman, Hindemith, Barber, Thomson, Korngold, Copland. Rorem, Bolcom, Corigliano, and Griffes. It is a huge spectrum of work and while some are less successful than other, they all are given respectful and loving renditions by White and Sanders. It is great fun to hear Firestone's famous 'If I could tell you' that opened the Voice of Firestone for so many years along side Samuel Barber's gorgeous 'Sure on this shining night' and Aaron Copland's settings of Emily Dickinson's poems.

This a rare treat for connoisseurs of lieder and for lovers of beautiful songs. Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06

      3 out of 5 stars a rare gem of a CD.......2002-07-08

Sure On This Shining Night is not my usual musical cup of tea...yet, it has become one of my favorite CDs. This collection of American Romantic songs has burrowed its way into my heart.

There is a universality to the longing involved in Romanticism. These songs capture this feeling perfectly. From the first song to the last, these songs do one thing perfectly: evoke an emotional response.

This is due in no short measure to the wonderful performance Robert White gives. Rather than being merely technically accurate, White actually gives each of these songs a life of their own. He achieves this effect by getting inside not only the words, but the feelings involved.

Some of the highlights for me are: the lovely and memorable "Rose Marie," Ewazen's setting of Blake's "The Tiger," a moving version of "The Lord's Prayer" and the haunting "Never More Will the Wind."

Samuel Sanders is a worthy musical companion to White. His playing is reciprocally lovely and introspective. The notes are extensive and informative as well.

Even though it may be an acquired taste in our postmodern age, I give Sure On This Shining Night my full recommendation.

Amazing production and concept work. The vocals and lyrics are reminescent of Bowie/Numan but not at all like them, very unique. You're Not Alone is a must have track for spinning.

      Can't wait to hear more!!!

5 out of 5 stars It Is Worth It!.......2002-08-08

A diffrent way to look at dance music. I bought this CD in the hopes it would be at least as good as some of my other CD's, I found out after buying it that it was not a wast of money in the least. It soon became my number one favoret CD out of my entire collection of Dance, Trance, House, and Techno. One of the reasons I enjoy it so much is because it takes me to another world where I feel free. It is worth it all the way.

      5 out of 5 stars Wow!..........2002-01-14

An incredible, audbible journey. What a pleasure to hear something new in trance style music.

ONE flippin' "review" for this album?(and if you call track listings and "good cd" a "review") This is just sad...

and even sadder to think about how many horrendous bands of this era found some level of success with a sub-standard passionless sound while Black Train Jack suffers in oblivion with out of print albums and hardly a footnote on the web. It's a cold world I know, but Black Train Jack were lightning in a bottle; a band / experience that deserves SO MUCH MORE.

BTJ played caffeinated '90s "melodic pop-punk" in a more polished Descendents style with a healthy dose of NYC posi-hardcore attitude. Think Dave Smalley fronted Dag Nasty meets Scott Renolyds era ALL in a Pre-H2O 90's era (got all that? lol). Black Train Jack had some killer musical chops, a vocalist with range, a sense of humor and a great live show. (I had only seen them as a warm up act for Down By Law and the Mighty Bosstones, but they blew me away both times)

There are some excellent excellent tracks on this disk: Lottery, Not Alone, Handouts, That Reminds Me and even that Steve Miller Band cover...

If I was a trust-fund baby I would purchase the rights to Black Train's catalog and re-master / re-issue them because they are great and more people out there would seriously dig this band. Until then all I can do is state my honest opinion on the web.
