The second album by this Wilco side project has a nicely resilient band quality to it. Originally seen as Jeff Tweedy's noisier outlet, it's arguably as tuneful as his main band's most recent releases. A trio with Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche and producer/utility player/solo artist Jim O'Rourke, most of the songs are clearly the result of group interplay. However, it's the finishing touches, from arrangement flourishes to lyrics, that make them rise about hipster jamming. And just when you thought every cool guitar riff has already been discovered, the set starts off with a bang as "Hey Chicken" lets loose with a dazzler. There follows everything from an easy country groove ("The Ruling Class") to power pop ("Stupid As the Sun") and beautifully fragile balladry ("Answers to Your Questions"), to plenty more smart and mammoth guitar sounds. --David Greenberger

4 out of 5 stars I Liked It Better than the Most Recent Wilco CD.......2007-06-12

I hate to say it, but I was disappointed in the last Wilco CD, "Sky Blue Sky." I found it much too laid back for the band that did "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." Thankfully, an amazon reviewer turned me on to Loose Fur, which is fronted by Wilco lead singer and songwriter Jeff Tweedy. I was hoping "Sky Blue Sky" would be what this album is: 37 minutes of sometimes loud, always thoughtful rock music. That's not to say that all the tracks on "Born Again in the USA" (which is a loose concept album on American religion) is, like the first track "Hey Chicken," full of distorted guitars. Jim O'Rourke's tunes are mostly acoustic and soft-spoken, but they complement Tweedy's louder tracks. The first song, Tweedy's energetic "Hey Chicken" (with the line, "I'm living rent free, in the back of your head") knocked me out in a way good rock should. Tweedy might be getting a bit tired with Wilco, which has been putting out albums for 12 years now. But if he keeps making albums like "Born Again" with Loose Fur, that's not such a bad thing. The band is a tight, crack unit, and they also have a sense of humor (most prominently featured on O'Rourke's "Thou Shalt Wilt"). Now that I've found out about them, I look forward to buying their 2003 album.

3 out of 5 stars Great pop.......2007-05-17

***1/2 - I really hesitated picking this up after being so disappointed in A Ghost is Born, but I'm glad I did. Most of the songs come in at around 3 minutes, which is part of their charm. This is good, fun, breezy pop rock. And given the material, I don't even mind O'Rourke's voice all that much. Somehow it fits on "Answers to Your Questions", which offers a nice slower tempo song amidst the lighter tunes around it.

The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars is because of "Wreckroom", which features great 70s style guitar work but is eventually marred by the irritating wall of noise guitar style that, for me, ruined much of Ghost. Take that out and lop off the last 4 minutes of the song, and it would be my favorite song on the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Get your Tweedy fix.......2006-10-08

I've been a Wilco fan for years, and love everything Wilco related. But no side projection/incarnation has captivated me the way the Loose Fur project has. The Tweedy/O'Rourke combination is unmatched in indy rock today, in my opinion. In a time when any yahoo can make a record in their bedroom with plug-ins and the like, the Loose Fur records are minimal-production marvels that allow the songs to speak for themselves. And they are amazing songs. In many ways (and I expect a ton of flack for this), better than some of the recent Wilco stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Good at First, But Fades Over Time.......2006-08-17

I've been listening to this album since it leaked onto the internet several months prior to its release. At first, I thought it was incredible. As times passed, however, I found myself listening less and less. Now I still come back to the standouts (mostly Tweedy's tracks) but I don't find myself desiring to hear the full album when I sit down to listen. It's still good and songs like "Hey Chicken" and "Thou Shalt Wilt" will knock your socks off.

5 out of 5 stars Good follow up.......2006-08-15

Songs like "Hey Chicken" deserve to be released as singles. If you are a Wilco fan from Ghost is Born, you will find this an interesting listenable CD. I wish they would cut out a minute of noise here and there, but this overall is a very enjoyable CD for anyone jonsing for some new Tweedy/O'Rourke stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2007-06-18

Sometime in the early 80's there were rumours about Black Sabbath's new singer being Ian Gillan. We all laughed. We should have cried. Being full of anticipation I bought Born Again, but having listened to it, I was so sorry. I really tried to like it. Ian Gillan singing with Black Sabbath. What could go wrong? But all I was, was a sorry teenager having wasted what little money I had. It didn't sound like Black Sabbath at all. In my opinion the sound is too sharp edged and flat. All about the production seems rushed and the lyrics are really silly. And Gillan's way of singing doesn't fit the music at all. It actually feels a bit odd listening to Gillan singing while Iommi's riffing. Unfortunately this must be one of the least enjoyable recordings by any of the participants. Consider buying something else by Black Sabbath or Deep Purple, like all albums featuring Ozzy and Gillan in respective band.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Sabbath album!.......2007-05-20

Why this line up never lasted i'll never know they were amazing, strongest lineup since Sabbath w.DIO.

4 out of 5 stars Should be REMIXED AND REMASTERED Again!.......2007-03-24

When Dio first left Black Sabbath after "Live Evil" was released, Black Sabbath faced a dillemna. The Eighties were moving on, and Ozzy had moved on to solo success. So what do they do? Invite another pioneering Heavy Metal singer along for the ride, Ian Gillan.

The results were terrifying, in more ways than one. The album resulting from the collaboration, Born Again, should've been a masterpiece because its not only not under the dictatorial thumb of Ronnie James Dio (nothing against him, I love Dio and Dio Sabbath and Rainbow), but some of the flatted fifth Doom riffs we all know and love and also D tuning the guitars have returnd!

So what results is a would be classic. Killer songs and screams, great atmosphere. What went wrong? Well ever listen to Ulver's Nattens Madrigal? Remember it sounded like there was no bass to the mix and that it was recorded on some cheap tape recorder in the other room? Well even though Ulver wanted it that way, its Black Sabbath we're talking about here and its unfair to have such a horrible production and mix.

The riffs on here were good enough to not only have Spinal Tap and Danzig be inspired by them (Zero the Hero in paticular was remade basically into Danzig's Her Black Wings with the Moog Taurus pedal parts translated into piano notes!) but the singing rivals Gillan's time with Deep Purple. Bass? What Bass? I can hardly hear it, and when I do it sounds terrible, especially when compared to the great bass tone on Mob Rules (not that the playings bad here, but the tone? Terrible). Drums are as good as expected in that annoying Phil Collins gated reverb flat sounding way (Bill Wards performance is great though). So imagine an album where every frequency is gone except Treble, and that's what Born Again sounds like. Otherwise its great. I wish they would remix this the way it should be, because its probably their last classic album before the reformation.

1 out of 5 stars one of the worst Black Sabbath CD's ever.......2007-03-04

poor sound, poor vocals. the highlight of the cd is zero the hero which Cannibal Corpse covered years later and did a better job on. after ozzy and then dio sabbath lost there touch until the reunion with ozzy.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Production / Weak Lyrics.......2006-12-24

I'll never understand the cult-like following that this album has. The studio production is the worst I've ever heard of any album released by a major recording outfit. Geezer is buried in the mix. The drums sound horrible. The lyrics appear to have had almost no creative thought put into them. For the most part, the songs have a "phoned-in" quality to them. The only highlights that save this from a one-star rating are some of Gillian's masterful screams & a couple of decent & fluid solos from Iommi.
This is for Sabbath completists only, if you ask me.

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great abum.......2007-06-16

Ian Gillan fronting Black Sabbath. what more needs to be said. Zero the Hero is brilliant. Great album.

4 out of 5 stars A DIFFERENT KIND OF SABBATH RECORDING, ODD. BUT HAS GROWN ON ME IN THE LAST TWENTYFOUR YEARS......................2007-06-04

This is not one of my favorite Sabbath albums. Ian Gillian vocally took a no bull atittude with "Born Again" as it shows in this recording. I do like Ian Gillians amazing vocal talent with Deep Purple and of course on "Born Again" with Sabbath. Gillian does some screaming on this recording and at times I swear I'm listening to Guns and Roses Axel Rose. I guess Axel himself was influenced with "Born Again" and used Ian Gillians vocal style on his Guns and Roses recordings. At times the lyrics are hard to make out, that aside there is some good songs here. "Zero The Hero" is a classic, "Trashed", "The Dark", "Digital Bitch", "Born Again", "Hot Line" and my favorite "Keep It Warm" are really good catchy songs. Ian Gillian has stated he threw up after hearing the final cut of "Born Again" before its release in 1983. "Born Again" respectfully reached #4 on the record charts in September 1983, Sabbaths highest charting since Sabbath Bloody Sabbath in 1973. Fans and critics were expecting something more from Sabbath with "Born Agains" release in 1983. I have to say this is an odd Sabbath recording compared to Ozzy and Dio years. I do find myself listening to "Born Again" from time to time, and as odd as it is to me I enjoy it at times, even though it is different from Sabbath years 1970-1981. I give "Born Again" four stars because it has grown on me in the last 24 years and has become a somewhat of a gem over the past two and a half decades. "Born Again" is different, but can grow on you, if you give it a chance........

4 out of 5 stars A Great One Time Line-Up.......2007-05-28

First, if you don't like Ian Gillan, you won't like this CD. Probably. But I like him, as while the production on this album is at the very least 'odd', I find myself playing this more than most other Sabbath CD's. 'Zero The Hero' is one of the best Sabbath riffs ever, and there is a certain 'fabulous disaster' stigma attached to this album; I know there was supposedly some turmoil within the band while recording this, and Gillan sounds half asleep on 'Born Again' at times; Still, no denying that Sabbath sound is in tact; And while this CD is considered an oddity at most to die hard fans, it just may be the last great Sabbath album. Oh, and Gillan sounds plenty demonic here at times. I knew he had it in him. I remember seeing them live on this tour, and just being blown away by his performance. Too bad he didn't get to stay a little longer....

4 out of 5 stars Best Sabbath.......2007-04-12

I loved the dark feel to this cd. The guitar solos sparkle and Gillan's voice is awesome. I think it ranks amongst his best. 'Trashed' is killer, 'Disturbing the Priest' and 'Zero the Hero' are haunting. 'Digital Bitch' is a driving, cool song. The band sounds revived and fresh with Ian G singing. This CD has gotten better with age.
Wont break every song down, but this is a must have. Probably one of the heaviest cds of the 80's. Overlooked in Sabbath's catalog.

5 out of 5 stars different, VERY different.......2007-04-05

This doesn't even come CLOSE to being a normal Black Sabbath album. All the vocals are loud, EXTREMELY loud. The lead singer, who became famous from Deep Purple, screams a lot, and let me tell you, Black Sabbath isn't supposed to be a band that has a screamer for a lead singer. However, somehow, it works here.

"disturbing the priest" is about the LOUDEST Black Sabbath song I think I've ever heard. I love the crashing lightning bolt-like guitar riffs in between the screams. I also think "keep it warm" is a nice way to close out the album, even though it's basically a slow ballad with guitar riffs slowly playing in the background.

"zero the hero" is a pretty cool song, and "trashed" is a fast-paced rocker that's a nice way to open a heavy metal album, though not really what I'd consider a good way to open a Black Sabbath album. The album is really good though. Take a break from the Ozzy Sabbath and listen to this.

5 out of 5 stars Its Definitely a Good Ready To Die Companion CD.......2006-08-31

Ok, not every song is Ill... I read the reviews and thought twice but I bang that stuff just as loud as I do Ready To Die. Its got some jems on it.

4 out of 5 stars decent (3.5 stars).......2006-08-08

lemme start off by saying DEAD WRONG IS ILL and eminem rips that track up, even better than big. other standouts include "notorious big" and "rap phenomenon" (which features the classic line 'all them rings and things you sing about bring em out / its hard to yell when the barrel's in ya mouth', which was used by jay-z on "what more can I say", and the jay version was sampled by swizz beats on last years hit "bring em out" by t.i.). the rest of the tracks range from good to bad, and none are outstanding like the first two.

buy it if you love big, otherwise just get the few best tracks from itunes.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but not better than his others........2006-07-28

There's always been one thing I didn't like so much about Biggie's music, and that was the fact that it is so beat based. When I listen to some of 2Pac's material, I get caught up in the lyrics much easier. On Pac's songs his voice is standing out on the track so you notice it, while Biggie's voice is just there, while the beat dominates.

His voice fits the beats very good on this CD, just like his other Albums. This CD starts with an intro, and after that possibly my favorite track on the CD, simply called "Notorious B.I.G.". It's just the whole beat in this you just can't help loving. The CD continues the success with another great track after that, "Dead Wrong". But, sadly, after these two great tracks, this CD is only going to get worse. The next 5 tracks are also pretty good, all with rather good beats, but none that compares to the two first. Once you're about half way through the Album the songs starts getting really bad though, it seems that at this point Puffy had run out of good beats and just wanted this CD over with, but what do I know.

All around a pretty good CD, definetely worth picking up if you like Big's material, however, I would recommend getting Life After Death and Ready to Die instead, if you haven't already got those.

4 out of 5 stars aight .......2006-02-11

this album is real tight but dosen't have anything on Life After Death. in my opinion Biggie is the best rapper ever right behind Tupac, so thats why i gave this album 4 stars

3 out of 5 stars How can you not see?.......2005-12-30

Biggie is not dead. The guest rappers spot is just a fairly good ploy to hide this fact. Not like Tupac, who is consistently coming out with new material despite having died. I mean, please, people. How could Snoop Dogg NOT show up? He's a big crusader on the gangster front lines, pushing for the leader of the Crips and this as well. It's a front I tell you.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

A classic second-in-command rocker in the tradition of Keith Richards and Johnny Thunders, Little Steven has also made a mark apart from his erstwhile boss, the Boss. The man also known as Miami Steve Van Zandt had a major hand in Southside Johnny's bar-band masterwork Hearts of Stone, was the linchpin in 1985's Artists United Against Apartheid project, and lead his own group, the Disciples of Soul, for a time after his 1984 departure from the E Street Band. Largely out of the picture through the 1990s, Little Steven returns with a solo outing that rocks harder and is more inflamed lyrically than one might have expected from this long-AWOL warrior. Van Zandt's liner notes lay out his mission--to doff his bandana in the direction of the '60s rockers who helped shape his consciousness, from Cream to the Kinks to Jefferson Airplane. At the same time, he maintains the confrontational political stance that's been in evidence since the days of Sun City. Hence there's the title track ("Look around at the volunteered slavery") and "The Camouflage of Righteousness" ("We give you politicians and you call it a choice / We let you do the voting and you think you have a voice"). With this Savage attack, Little Steven fights the good fight and remains standing. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars A Wake-Up Call For All Of Us.......2004-06-28

Little Steven's BORN AGAIN SAVAGE is a wake-up call for all of us. Like Jefferson Starship's WINDOWS OF HEAVEN, its lyrics remind us to take better care of each other and the planet, or else we all won't feel/look too good. The guitar work is a blend of Led Zeppelin, Ted Nugent, and AC/DC, the singing is passionate, and the rhythm section is propulsive. Get this CD along with MEN WITHOUT WOMEN, VOICE OF AMERICA, the late 70s/early 80s Springsteen catalog, Southside Johnny's BEST OF, SUPER HITS, I DON'T WANT TO GO HOME, THIS TIME IT'S FOR REAL, HEARTS OF STONE, and BETTER DAYS, and the 2002 Springsteen release THE RISING- preferably all at once.

5 out of 5 stars Like the barrel of a gun!!!.......2001-07-16

After learning a lot about Bruce Springsteen for a "speech" at school I wanted to know who this "Miami Steven Van Zandt" was. So I asked my mother to get a few albums of him via the library. On of these albums was.."Born Again Savage". The first time I heard it I wasn't so enthousiastic, because I didn't like the noise of roaring electric guitars(LOL) yet but when I listened a little bit better, read the lyrics and heard some more CD's I fell in love with this guy...:) (Bad enough that he's 35 years older...*GRIN*). Anyway, I'm not so at home in the music of the 80's, so I can only say that this album is the same good as his other, older albums, but this one has this special guitar-bass-drums sound which makes it so rockin'. I like all his lyrics very much because they've more to tell then most of the music these days, and...they just speak a little more!!! My fav's of this album are 'Guns, drugs, and gasoline 'cause of the drums, "Flesheater" because of the lyrics('No more flesh, flesheater!") and.. actually all the other songs. Gr8 album Steven, waiting for an other one!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Little Steven Big Comeback!.......2000-05-06

A little bit of pop, a little bit of rock and roll, and a whole lot of electric guitars! That's all you need to make Little Steven's fifth solo album Born Again Savage! Born Again Savage was probobly "Little" Steve Van Zandt's biggest comeback! Born Again Savage is one of Steve's only album without "The Dicsiples of Soul," his early band from 1982. In stead of "The Dicsiples," Stevie has Adam Clayton, a band member from the famous pop band U2,and Jason Bonham. Born Again Savage comes in a jewel case with a book of lyricks on the inside. Just a warning, since there are only three people in the band, the music's loud!

4 out of 5 stars A totally rocking album!.......2000-04-26

I first heard this album at a friend's party, and had to have it, immediately! Bought it the next morning. I've been a fan of his music for ages, and this album doesn't disappoint. I believe "Born Again Savage" - his fifth album - is the most aggressively rocking album Little Steven has made. The sounds of his youth - British rock, with some Dylan and punk mixed in, is obvious. "Born Again Savage" was the last in a series of sociopolitical projects he conceived in the '80's, with the themes being: the individual, the family, government, economics, and religion. It is perfect with Jason Bonham on drums, and with U2's Adam Clayton on bass. Just too bad he has no plans to tour and promote the album!

2 out of 5 stars Nothing original here........2000-03-13

This is the last time I buy a album based on a ROLLING STONE magazine advertisement. The ad compared Little Steven to AC/DC and Led Zeppelin, if you want to hear good rock buy their albums instead. I found the lyrics sophomoric and childish at best. The only reason I gave it two stars is for Little Steven's guitar work and Jason Bonham's drumming. Don't even get me started on this guys voice. He is a good guitar player but he really needs to find a singer/songwriter to work with. Despite all this there are a few redeeming qualities to this album. My advise is try to find a used copy somewhere, as a matter of fact you can have mine.

5 out of 5 stars The best from The Best Singer and Tenor of all time........2007-04-24

This is a beautiful collection of songs. Once again it exhibits the depth and breath of Mario Lanza's vocal abilities. It is wonderful to hear him sing such lovely melodies. It is also splendid to read Derek Mannering's explanation of how Lanza interpreted each song with his heart and soul. For anyone who is a fan of Mario's, this collection is worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2001-11-25

Most of these songs are from the popular radio show he did in the 50's, when his voice was at it's best. I own numerous Lanza cds, and I can never get enough of his glorious voice and these beautiful songs. A lot of them can be found on other albums, it's true, but the first song is a previously unreleased gem, which was a big selling point with me. How could I pass this up? Also a lot of the songs are different versions from others I have, so this album was definately a must have, for me. I think that anyone who is a true Lanza fan, will love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Another great CD by the greatest singer of all time!!!.......2001-07-17

Derek Mannering has done it again in releasing yet another first class CD collection by the "Voice of the Century", Mario Lanza. Most of the items on this album have been previously released either on vinyl, CD, or both, but this collection is worth having nonetheless. The one item here never before released is the beautifully sung "All the Things You Are" and did Lanza ever serve this one up in first class fashion. The singing here is extremely fresh and vibrant. A recording that I don't believe has been on CD before is the "You Are Love", from Showboat, presented here (different from the performance on the definitive "Don't Forget Me" C). Lanza shows us here a truly passionate and ardent Gaylord Revenal. No other singer sang this song as well. "On the Street Where You Live" is given a very virile and beautiful rendition by Lanza. I don't know where or when I have ever heard the song "Where or When" sung this well. The rest of the selections on this offering are terrific as well, but can be found on other collections. This collection is worth owning, if for no other reason than for the four selections previously mentioned. The sound quality is excellent, giving the Mario Lanza voice the benefit of its full presence. Lanza definitely had a true flair for the popular song and Broadway ballad, as well as the ringing operatic aria, no doubt about it. If you're looking for a collection of classic standard and Broadway tunes performed with the mastery and excellence that only Mario Lanza could deliver, this CD is the one for you. Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars The more things change...............2006-09-02

This is a kick a** album. One of the more known hard rock bands of the late 80's/90's comes back in solid form with a new frontman. Yeah, it takes a little bit to get comfortable with the new voice, but I think Jaime St James knows how to lay down the lyrics. He certainly has the experience.
This is a great album, and I am not just saying this because the mainstream music scene blows either. You could put this right up the with Warrant's early works. My favorite will always be Dog Eat Dog, but this one delivers the goods..............

3 out of 5 stars Strong 3 stars, new singer is ok.......2006-08-22

Well I wanted to listen to this cd many times before reviewing. First few times I heard it, I hated it! After tons of listening it is a very catchy album if you give it a chance and turn off your brain as you listen.

The first 3 tracks are solid! Devil's Juice and Dirty Jack especially! Solid rockers!

The rest of the cd... hmmm well musically it's awesome but the lyrics(We miss you Jani) and the vocals are questionable.

Love Strikes Like Lightning is the worst song I have ever heard haha. The lyrics... Let me get my story straight, she's the best thing since my last date, oh yeah!... horrible!!!

Anyway Warrant won't make many new fans with this cd but will likely please some of the old. Some... I miss Jani and the 90s sound of Warrant! Fortunetly, Jani Lane's Back Down to One is a killer solo cd and sounds like like Belly to Belly Vol 1... woohoo!

4 out of 5 stars not a bad new album.......2006-08-20

I have all the Warrant albums, and even though Jani has left the band, I had to hear this new album. After listening to it afew times it really grew on me. I like most of the songs on the album. My favorites are "Dirty Jack", "Burbon County Line","Devil's Juice". The other songs are not bad either. It will grow on you if you are a fan.

3 out of 5 stars For fans of 80s pop-metal.......2006-08-17

    3.5 Stars

Warrant's first new studio album in ten years is both a reunion and a revamping. "Born Again" (2006) marks the return of original lead guitarist Joey Allen and drummer Steven Sweet, along with holdovers Erik Turner (guitar) and Jerry Dixon (bass). Gone, however, is lead singer/songwriter Jani Lane.

Even with 4/5ths of the original lineup intact, it can't rightfully be called Warrant, can it? After all, Lane, a gifted songwriter, wrote all the band's songs and supplied them with all their memorable melodies and hooks. It was Lane's finely crafted songs that defined the band's music. Whether it be pop-metal with the band's semi-classic first two albums, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich" (1989) and "Cherry Pie," (1990) or a stab at alternative rock in the 90s with "Ultraphobic" (1995) and "Belly2Belly Volume 1;" Jani Lane WAS Warrant.

So with 4/5ths of the band reunited without Lane, the band is, well, uhh...Born Again? Rather than go with a generic unknown (as Skid Row did for Bach's replacement) Warrant wisely opted for a veteran of the 80s hair-metal scene to fill in for Lane. Lane's replacement, Jammie St. James, alumni of the underrated pop-metal band Black N' Blue, is a more than adequate replacement. He may not be the songwriter that Lane is (Dixon wrote or co-wrote most of the album's songs) but he has the pipes and charisma to front the veteran hair-metal dinosaur that is Warrant. Guitarist Joey Allen sounds as great as ever and his return is more than welcome.

While Warrant's classic third album "Dog Eat Dog" (1992) went for a heavier sound as a response to the changing sea of rock from pop-metal to grunge, and while the band's later-day 90s albums embraced the alternative sound of the times, "Born Again" lives in a vacuum, completely unaware of its surroundings. If someone presented me with "Born Again" and didn't tell me a thing about it and asked me to guess, I'd estimate that it was from around '88, from the sunset strip.

While "Born Again" definitely sounds retro, without Lane it doesn't really sound like vintage Warrant. It actually sounds more like Black N' Blue than Warrant. However, if you are a fan of 80s pop-metal, Lane or no Lane, you will definitely enjoy this album. While "Born Again" may not be a classic pop-metal recording, it's certainly enjoyable and fans of the genre should pick it up.
