Absolutely the BEST !.......2006-05-31
Our church choir sang a few of these songs which I loved, so I decided to order it. It is a very sweet, gentle, inspiring collection of music. Many times when you get a CD, you are fortunate to find 2-4 on there that you really like enough to play regularly. But on this one, every song is wonderful. This music is so spiritually uplifting and peaceful that you will want to play it regularly. Some if may bring some tears it is so beautiful. John Rutter has a way with this type of music. You will probably want to be giving some of these cd's away to those you love.
Great for bringing a child into this world.......2005-12-22
I had this CD on while in labor with my last child. We had a wonderful homebirth and what better then to have the spirit in our home with this music as we welcomed a brand new baby. It helped me relax and helped the birth be peaceful, calm, and spiritual.
CD like new.......2005-10-02
This CD was advertised as "like new" and it was -- in fact, it was still in the plastic wrapper. I couldn't have found a better deal or quicker service. Everything was great!
The Sweetest Music.......2004-06-07
I love this CD. My family and I listened to it over and over and over again, during the last few weeks of my mother's life. It has been a comfort to me in time of sorrow. Now it brings tears every time I listen to it. This music is like loving arms around me. It touches my soul. I've given so many away, I should have bought a case of them.
This is my new all-time-favorite CD!.......2004-04-22
I bought this CD because I had heard "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need" once and loved it. But it's just one of the many beautiful songs on this CD. I'm at a loss to describe what joy this music brings to me each time I listen to it. I carry it from house to car and back again so I can enjoy it wherever I am. I've given away several "Consider the Lilies" CD's to friends and relatives, something I've never done before. Anyone who is facing a serious challenge in life will be uplifted and comforted by this ethereal music.

Mississippi Mass.......2006-02-02
Just like one of the other reviewers, it took me a minute to get into the cd as well. My favorites are #'s 1,2,4,8, and 10. I am teaching #'s 2,8, and 10 to my choir now. Our Women's Choir learned #4 last summer. The songs have sorta an "old school traditional" feel to them that can minister to older and younger members alike.
It Had To Grow On Me.......2005-12-19
I am not going to lie. When I first bought this album, I really was not feeling it. It took me a few times of listening it to it over and over again to get use to it. I have to agree with previous reviewers, the songs do soung like Georgia Mass Choir rejects and it is not their normal style but they sound a lot better than the Georgia Mass Choir. The Songs I really love are One More Day, The Next Time Wil Be The First Time, I'm Not Tired Yet, When We Get Up, Victory Shall Be Mine, But By My Spirit, and Place Called There. These songs just really take you to church. I had taught my choir 3 songs from the album and my pastor and church just loves them. If you are looking for some hand-clapping, foot-stomping, holyghost filled music then please purchase this CD.
GREAT CD.......2005-10-20
I LOVE THIS CD. THE MISSISSIPPI MASS CHOIR IS THE BEST MASS CHOIR IN THE WORLD. I LOVE THE MUSIC THAT THEY SING. EVERY SONG THEY SANG IS AWESOM. THIS CD IS AWESOME AND YOU WILL SEE WHY:
"ONE MORE DAY" is the perfect song to open the cd. This song is one of my favorite songs in the world.
"GOD IS KEEPING ME" is a nice song too. It is good.
"THE NEXT TIME WILL BE THE FIRST TIME" is my song. this songs ministers to me everytime that I hear it. Beverly Crawford did an excellent job on lead. "
I'M NOT TIRES YET" is one of the songs that you just expect from the Mississippi Mass Choir. This song is my favorite song on the cd.
"I'M STILL HERE" is the best song. I love this song. When I first heard this song I love it. This song is awesome.
"WHEN WE GET UP" is my favorite song. I love the lead on this song. Lilly lilan. She is so awesome. I love her voice. This is my personal favorite song.
"VICOTRY SHALL BE MINE" is an awesome song. You expect something like this from them and they did an excellent job.
"IF I BE LIFTED UP" is the best song on the song. I love it. The words just ministry to me. I love this song.
"BUT BY MY SPIRIT" is a powerfl song. I love it.
"YOU BROUGHT ME" is not really a good song.
"PLACE CALLED THERE" is a good song.
"THANK YOU FOR MY MANSION" is just a remake of the 1st time that they did it. I still love it.
"IT WAS WORTH IT ALL" is a nice song to end this cd
THIS CD IS AWESOME. ITS DOES GET WEAK AT THE END OF THE CD BUT OTHER THAN THAT I LIKE IT.
Could have been better.......2005-09-30
I agree with God's Son "God's Son" comments. The cd was not as the previous Mississippi Mass Choir albums. I was waiting for some praise and worship but what I got was songs I can sing in church with the musicians. The songs was not effective to me. I like track #1, 2, and 5. Hopefully there next album will be better. MMC DON'T GET TIRED YET!!!
AWESOME.......2005-06-10
A MUST HAVE SPIRIT FULL CD. THIS CD WILL TOUCH YOU IN SO MANY WAYS. KNOWN THAT ITS THE LORD THATS LEADING THEM. GOD BLESS YOU ALL KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Moving.......2007-01-14
Of the two disks recorded at San Marco, I find this one the more enjoyable for its variety in pieces and arrangement of choral and instumental works; although it's been a while since original recording, I found the sound reproduction exceptional on a good system: Gabrieli's ephemeral sounds on his stage-moving!
Recording problems not quite solved/more rehearsal?.......2007-01-12
These are some of the antiphonal pieces that Giovanni Gabrieli wrote for the two balconies of San Marco in Venice. The recording problems there must have been many, and in reality, were not quite solved. The antiphonal effects are there, but there is a lot of muddy sound, with the whole thing sounding as if through a veil. The performance is "old" style, but I could accept that from 1967. What bothers me is shaky ensemble, with performers unable to overcome the space. They never seem to have understood "watch, don't listen", which is crucial in strange spaces like San Marco. Maybe they couldn't get enough recording time in the space, but there is some terribly ragged ensemble. AND screaming tenors, who aren't quite tuned into the style (although I don't know who was, in those days). BUT, these are good examples of attainable performances of these pieces, and unless you are experienced in early music, and are performing these pieces (with large college forces, maybe), this is probably what your performaces will sound like. Cleaner, I hope.
'Welcome home' to an old friend.......2007-01-09
I got a pleasant surprise when I put this CD on my music system. I recognized it immediately as the CD re-release of a marvelous album that I had thought was long out of print, "The Glory of Gabrieli, Vol. III." In the late 1960s and early '70s, organist E. Power Biggs joined forces with Gregg Smith, the Texas Boy's Choir and a host of others to produce a series of albums spotlighting the music of Giovanni Gabrieli. The albums were all recorded in the basilica of San Marco in Venice, taking advantage of its wonderful acoustics. The first two albums in the series featured a combination of organ, voices and orchestral forces. But in this third volume, Biggs and the orchestra removed themselves to the wings, so to speak, and an a cappella album was released featuring only the voices of the Gregg Smith singers and the Texas Boy's Choir, unaccompanied.
I had an old-fashioned cassette tape pirate copy of this album for many years, but as cassettes would, it ultimately wore out. I then found that, despite my searches, the album was no longer available. I finally caught up with it one day, in a used-record cardboard box at the public library's used book store. I was glad to have it back, but of course it was an old LP, rather beat up and scratched. Now I'm glad to have it once gain, pristine and unscratched on a digitally-remastered CD.
For 35 years I've been collecting music, and this has always been one of my favorite albums. I'm very glad to welcome it back again.
Heavenly music performed as in heaven.......2002-05-17
This is an extraordinary find for the connoisseur of baroque and early church music. Tracks 9 and 14 are some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. As the jacket quotes from an English visitor of the time (1600), "Nevere in may life hast I heareth such celestial strains as these. Truly, these be the tones that the Almighty himself doth heare."
Old Favorite re-released on CD.......2000-01-23
I had bought this as an LP in "quadrophonic" sound and thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, it may not be up to modern day recording standards but it is a worthwhile recording nonetheless. I highly recommend it as an intro to Giovanni Gabrieli.

Customer Reviews:
Nice recording.......2007-05-20
I got this recording to hear how Beethoven might sound on period instruments. That sort of thing interests me; I play early woodwinds, myself. The playing is good; and I think I got my money's worth.
Strong on the even numbered symphonies ..........2007-03-22
If you're after superb recordings of the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th symphonies, look no further. However, I find Norrington's interpretations of the odd numbered symphonies much less effective for some reason. I've had this set for some years now (I own several recordings of the Beethoven symphonies, five complete cycles, in fact) and I have come to the conclusion that Norrington's recordings of the 2nd, 4th and 8th symphonies are amongst the best available. However, he is weaker in some of the other symphonies. Yet this is a very enjoyable cycle and I do enjoy listening to it, albeit a little critically.
Many or most music lovers will be aware that this was probably the first complete set of recordings on period instruments which took Beethoven's metronome marks very seriously and endeavoured to adhere to them as much as humanly possible. I am inclined to agree with Nikolaus Harnoncourt on this subject and he suggests that Beethoven's metronome markings were worked out in his head and represent how these works might sound in the imagination rather than in the concert hall, does that make any sense?
Hogwood's slightly earlier pioneering H.I.P. recordings of Beethoven symphonies please me a little more than Norrington's. Hogwood wasn't as dogmatic about the metronome markings and I feel that his set is a little more dramatic and "potent" than Norrington's. Those are my feelings.
If you're after a very cheap set of Beethoven symphonies on period instruments, look no further. If you're "cashed up" and a little more choosy, go for Gardiner or Brüggen or, perhaps, Goodman's.
Norrington's Performances are the Worst of the Worst of the Worst of the Worst, I wish I was exaggerating!.......2006-02-05
This was recorded back in the 1980's when the period instrument movement was still just getting off the ground and the incompetence level of period instrument performers and conductors was off the charts! The instruments themselves were weezy, scratchy and just plain pathetic. Performance standards have improved today but I can't believe anyone in their right mind prefered Beethoven played this way, back in the 1980's, today or even 200 hundred years ago.
Since these performances are so pathetic as to be almost unmentionable, I'll zero in on two symphonies in particular, the Eroica and the 9th. The tempos for all the movements of the Eroica are very fast, the first movement with the exposition repeat observed is only 15:20. Very fast, so it should be exciting, explosive, right? Wrong. It's flat out boring and I was actually getting drowsy. It goes without saying that the instruments have no weight, no depth and no power but the performance lacks any insight at all, especially so in the great Funeral March, here played like a stroll in the park.
The Ninth Symphony is even worse, far, far worse. The first two movements rattled off without even a thought or care. The great, spiritual adagio becomes whiney, rushed nonsense in Norrington's hands and the choral finale was so awful I had to stop it several times.
To call the London Classical Players the equals of a high school orchestra would be an insult to high school orchestras everywhere. The London Classical Players are much more like elementary school children with their first instruments.
This kind of mockery of Beethoven might be fine in England but I'm sure the Germans and Austrians had a good laugh as their hearts filled with rage against the idiotic Englishman! Of course I didn't buy this crappy Norrington set, I just borrowed it from the library and returned it as soon as possible. I feel sorry for anyone who thinks this is good and I feel even more sorry for anyone who thinks that this is how Beethoven should actually be played! With no joy, no soul, no power, no spirituality. If you insist on period instruments ( why would you insist on that you moron? ), go get John Eliot Gardiner. If you actually want to hear drama and beauty in this music, go to Karajan or if you want to experience the full depth and profundity of these works, go to Furtwangler.
Great sound, but Symphonies 1, 2 and 4 are the best here........2005-12-04
Roger Norrington's controversial and ground breaking period instrument Beethoven Symphony cycle with the London Classical Players, recorded and released in the mid-late 1980s, is here offered by Virgin Classics at budget price. Norrington's recordings have great sound, and Symphonies 1, 2 and 4 are the best recorded and played here. Perhaps it is also true that the lighter, more Haydn like textures of these symphonies work better on period instruments than do the sterner, more muscular symphonies, such as 3 "Eroica", 5, 6 "Pastoral", 7, 8, and 9.
This is an interesting alternative view of Beethoven, but it should by no means be one's only set of these famous works. For the "larger" symphonies, I would recommend: 3, "Eroica": Szell/Cleveland (Sony); Bruno Walter/Columbia (Sony); Karl Bohm/Vienna Philharmonic (DG); for 5, Reiner/Chicago (RCA);
Bohm/Vienna (DG); Karajan/Berlin (DG, 1975 recording, with complete symphonies); Carlos Kleiber/Vienna (DG); for 6, "Pastoral": Bruno Walter/Columbia (Sony); Bohm/Vienna (DG);
Andre Clutyens/Berlin Philharmonic (Seraphim); for 7, Bohm/Vienna (DG); for 8, Bohm/Vienna (DG); Ormandy/Philadelphia (Sony); Bernstein/Vienna (DG); for 9, Szell/Cleveland (Sony), Karajan/Berlin (DG, 1962);
Furtwangler/Philharmonia (Tahra, Lucerne VIII/1954, perhaps hard to find at the present date); Bohm/Vienna (DG, 1970).
Norrington's fast tempos seem to gloss over important points in many movements of these symphonies, especially 3:I, III; 5: III, IV (blazing intensity, but too fast); 6:I (too fast!); and 9: III and IV are positively bizarre, really turning the Beethoven I know and love inside out, with wildly different tempos from section to section.
Still, I give this 5 stars and applaud Norrington's bravery in recording Beethoven as he was not recorded previously, with period instruments, and different ideas of tempo, articulation, and phrasing. Norrington's recordings will not be confused with others: there are none others quite like them.
Excellent - emotion & energy!.......2005-05-30
I cannot remember the number of times I've listened to this - Fifth very good (survival against misfortune) - Sixth very good (joy/energy/movement to storm/lightening to peace/content) - Ninth the first movement, unbelievable carry of energy, revenge & rightful destruction of old/irrelevant . . . So much emotion & energy created/captured by Beethoven.

Vienna Idol.......2007-02-07
Two Questions: Was this the audition tape for "Vienna Idol?" and What would Simon Cowell's say?
How sad.......2006-04-16
A terrible try to match Libera. Someone said it right: how dare those people use such marvellous voices to create such ugly
thing? Let Libera deal with amazing new age music, let Vienna Boys Choir continue being masters of their domains: classical music.
Not their style.......2006-03-31
I was expecting something a lot better. One can't fault the choir for the recording. The fault lies with the director, arranger, and producer. The instrumental accompaniment over shadowed the boys singing. The arrangements of each song was too similar, and the boys sounded too restrained for this style. Pop is not the musical style of the Vienna Boys Choir. They need to stick what they do best - classical and sacred music.
Perhaps The Greatest Gag Gift Ever!.......2005-12-07
The greatest thing about this CD is that it wasn't meant to be funny! Upon listening to "Burning Down The House", I was seized with a fit of hysterical laughter that nearly broke a rib. And the laughs keep coming. Need a smooth tune for that special gal, try "Fantasy", she will be yours! Need a good jogging tune, "Get Down" should serve your purpose. A CD that will offer hours of entertainment. Guaranteed.
wow - THAT was something!.......2005-10-31
I got this as a gift because my friend saw a holiday cd with Vienna Boys Choir at my house. My advice:listen to the music previews before you buy the cd. It's too freaky for me. Good Luck.

If you missed it.... here is your chance.......2002-08-20
As a radio announcer, I come across a lot of great music. Some of my favorites come from albums that may not have been very successful commercially but gain a lot of attention once the single from it is played on the air. This album is one of them. The cut that is outstanding and deserves a place on the air and in the church is "Sombody Somewhere". It reminds you that the reason you have made it through those rough times is because "Somebody Somewhere" got down on their knees and interceded on your behalf. The title cut is gone sho' nuff set you on fire. The album is impeccably produced. If you missed it you won't regret it.

Very High Quality 'Easy Listening'.......2007-01-18
This is the second of Chandos 'The Grainger Edition' recordings I have reviewed and it is much closer to the heart of my tastes than the piano accompanied baritone solos of Volume 2 I previously reviewed. Just as I will value a cookbook if it has just one extraordinary recipe or a computer book if it has just one extraordinarily good programming idea, I wouldlove this album even if everything else but 'Scotch Strathspey and Reel' were junk. But, of course, all the other tracks on the album are not junk, they are very, very good. Just not as enjoyable as this superb rendition of the famous sea chanty, better known by its first line 'What do we do with a drunken sailor...' The 'Joyful Company of Singers' earns their name on this one. Next to Russian liturgical choral singing, sea chanties are my favorite, so I confess to being just a bit less than impartial on this one, but there you are. This one is simply lovely.

Album Description
It took a conspiracy of record company dunces working overtime to keep the Choir from the fame they so richly deserved. Pop-masters extraordinaire, the Choir's excellence would've outdated eventually, but never told so well nor sounding so great, Sundazed is proud to have made it all possible! This 1994 collection features tracks from 1966-1969 and features 4 bonus tracks 'Leave Me Be', 'I'd Rather You Leave Me', 'A to F' & 'Don't Change Your Mind'.
Customer Reviews:
It's a great CD.......2006-10-03
I own this CD and I think it's great. I was lucky enough to live in the area where these guys played locally and have followed them as a group, through all the changes, and individually. I think they are all talented, nice guys. David Smalley, Wally Bryson, Jim Bonfonti, went on to become The Raspberries along with Eric Carmen. It was Dan Klawon who penned It's Cold Outside. Dan and Ken Margolis were also in the Choir at one time. Ken was also in Cyrus Erie along with Eric Carmen. Later Dan and Ken formed The Sittin Ducks. A lovely group of talented musicians!
really fantastic!.......2006-07-03
i picked this disc up recently for the first 2 songs alone. but i soon discovered that all of these tracks are true gems! one of the best 60's pop bands i've had the pleasure of hearing. it's no surprise these guys went on to fame in the raspberries. the basis for their power pop sound was already firmly in place by 66/67. the amazing thing about this album is how fresh it sounds today. if this came out in 2006 it would be an indie pop classic! some of the tracks later in the disc suffer from bad fidelity, but the songs themselves are still brilliant. highly recommended for fans of 60's and 70's pop.
For all of you Nuggets fans.......2004-10-29
3/4 of this group went on to form the backbone of legendary 70's power-popsters, the Raspberries, and while I bought this disc mostly out of curiousity, I found it to be more than just "It's Cold Outside" and a bunch of filler. Granted, "It's Cold Outside" is one of the all time great pieces of the sixties garage rock puzzle, and should be tracked down in some form regardless, but this disc also houses two other great tunes whose sound should have made them hits on some level. "I'd Rather You Leave Me" and, to a lesser extent, "When You Were With Me" are both impressive tunes considering the era. After that, the pickin's get pretty slim, but it's a worthwhile collection even if as little more than a historical oddity.
Solid compilation from overlooked 60s pop band.......2000-06-09
The Choir's "It's Cold Outside" has been anthologized many times, most notably on the original Pebbles LPs, and again on the reissue Nuggets box. It's always stood out as a tremendous bit of jangly mid-60s pop, mixing chiming guitars, tamourine and the sort of swooning harmonies made famous by the Beatles, Beach Boys and others. Though it's always sounded like it dated from '65 or '66, it's actually from 1967.
And while few other of the Choir's tracks reach the extreme heights of "It's Cold Outside," this compilation, based on tracks spanning 1966 through 1969, shows that they did have more to offer. A good deal of this follows in the footsteps of The Beau Brummels, with complex harmonies matched by a rock 'n' roll backbeat. Shades of the Nightcrawlers, Left Banke, Hollies and others can also be heard.
Most of this is previously unreleased material, including a host of demos. The sound quality is good throughout, though its clear that the compilers had to go to a lot of effort to make it all presentable.
Though the mid-60s were filled with competent garage bands, few had the yearning pop touch of The Choir, as this disc so ably demonstrates.
Generally good, and worth it for one fantastic song.......1999-05-20
I've discovered The Choir through the Nuggets box set, which was featuring their only local hit "It's cold outside", a great little, innocent pop song. This CD features this hit and a collection of rarities (not always in hi-fi sound) by the band, whose line-up changed a lot during 1965 and 1970 (not a single band member in common between these two dates). For me the best time was 1966-1967, when the band featured Wally Bryson as lead guitarist and main composer. And the first song on this CD, "I'd Rather You Leave Me", only released before on a posthumous and out-of print EP, is the PERFECT 60'S POP SONG. An untold masterpiece. A Byrds-like intro on 12-strings guitar, a beautiful and innocent melody, high-register backing vocals, a solid beat... 2'06 of pure happiness. Even if the rest of the record was lousy (which is not the case), it would be worth it just for this song. All the other songs from 1967 ("I only did it cause I felt so lonely", "Don't change your mind"...) are very nice too. But listen to "I'd Rather You Leave Me" now !
