Recorded at the 1979 Havana Jazz Festival, this short and powerful set, with Miles Davis alumni, drummer Tony Williams and guitarist John McLaughlin, and Weather Report bassist Jaco Pastorius, was one for the ages. The previously unreleased selections, one through five, are explosive, but mis-miked live tracks. Williams' "Drum Improvisation" segues into McLaughlin's fuzz-toned "Dark Prince," which does not swing in a silent way. Pastorious' theme song "Continuum" is scaled down to its essential twilight textures, while the drummer's "Para Oriente" - which later became a stable in V.S.O.P's book, and was recast as "Angel Street" - is rendered here in a funky, pre-grunge mode. The guitarist's "Are You the One, Are You the One?" previews the jam band craze. The rest of the cuts were recorded a week later in a New York studio, But the warts-and-all original sides are unmatched for their primal power. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Glad to hear it finally make it from the vault.......2007-07-12
Tony Williams is a monster on this album. Jaco is Jaco and McLaughlin is McLaughlin, but to hear Tony play in this setting is amazing. If you're a fan of any of the three - buy it. If you're a drummer, this better be a part of your collection. You'll go crazy trying to figure out how Tony does what he does (how about the hands/feet roll during his drum improv...wow).
unrealized potential (and other thoughts).......2007-07-11
It is amazing that these 3 seminal musicians only got together for 40 minutes of music. John McLaughlin, arguably the most musically wide-ranging guitarist I've ever heard; Jaco Pastorius, maybe the greatest electric bass player ever; and Tony Williams, one of the top 5 scariest drummers in jazz/rock. Unfortunately, this recording isn't the best one for either of these guys; probably more time spent playing together would've done the trick, therefore my review title. Unfortunately, this will never happen, as 2 of them are dead. As far as Sony keeping these recordings in their vault; well, we all know what motivates these companies, and it isn't music, so don't hold your breath for unreleased treasures seeing the light of day (hey, where's that McLaughlin/Hendrix recording that supposedly exists). Speaking of McLaughlin, check out his short gig on the Crossroads Blues Festival 2-dvd set (featuring Clapton and other blues icons), where he plays with Dennis Chambers and Zakir Hussain. The guitar playing is amazing, in case anybody thought he had "lost" anything in the past 30 years. In fact, I was shocked. Getting back to Trio of Doom, I think Jaco really holds this thing together. Comments, everybody?
Trio of Doom vs Havana Jam 1/2.......2007-07-07
John McLaughlin should receive full credit for making this 1979 performance available. It has been well worth the wait, given that on Havana Jam 1/2 only three tracks were included, "The Dark Prince", "Continuum" and "Para Oriente". On this CD there is "Are You The One, Are You The One?" (live) plus the live versions of the three tracks mentioned above on one single CD. The recordings give new insights into the version of "Are You The One, Are You The One?" featured on "Johnny McLaughlin Electric Guitarist" as well as "The Dark Prince" on The One Truth Band's " Electric Dreams".
Legendary meeting, a bit less than legendary performance........2007-07-05
In 1979, a group of jazz musicians gave a series of performances in Havana, one of the seemingly endless gestures of art reaching out through the blocade to Cuba. Legendary among these performances was the "Trio of Doom" performance, a power trio of guitarist John McLaughlin, bassist Jaco Pastorius and drummer Tony Williams, all at the heights of their powers. Their brief performance (about 25 minutes) was intended for partial release, but McLaughlin blocked it, instead pulling the group in the studio for a brief session that was then released, with crowd noise dubbed in, as these performances (a popular technique since at least Duke Ellington's legendary "Live at Newport" performance). This CD gathers together all the material-- the 25 minute live show and about 15 minutes of studio material.
McLaughlin's concerns may have been a bit extraneous-- the live performance has its flaws, to be certain (Jaco wanders off key briefly on "Dark Prince", "Are You the One, Are You the One?" threatens to fall apart), but there's a rare energy and power to the performance that really can't be underestimated, starting with Williams brief drum solo intro that sets the mood for high tension before welcoming his band mates on a racing "Dark Prince". For me, as a Jaco fan, the highlight is "Continuum", performed with grace as Pastorius and Williams stick true to the studio recording and McLaughlin offers a superb commentary that sounds both new and natural.
The studio material, particularly when presented next to the live takes sounds a bit sterile. "Dark Prince" probably best illustrates this-- live, it has an energy and urgency to it, McLaughlin's guitars sound dirty and fierce, Pastorius and Williams explode full of energy. In the studio, McLaughlin's tone, while still overdriven, cleans up and the rhythm section gets a bit too lockstep.
All of the material has been remastered and sounds fantastic-- the live material in particular is notable, clearly the source tapes were in good shape, this could have been recorded yesterday. The set is augmented by brief liner notes by McLaughlin and an essay discussing the performance and subsequent studio session.
This recording is difficult to rate-- the sentimental part of me wants to give it five stars and an endlessly positive, glowing review, but in all honesty, while this is a great recording and one that I'm ecstatic to have, it's not exactly the sort of jaw-dropping performance you'd hope it'd be. Fans of any of the three artists will want this, but don't expect something that'll shake the world.
Thank you Sony, keep the vault open!!!.......2007-07-01
Tell me why in the first week has this CD sold so well coming from the "Jazz" category? What would music be like if there was no Tony Williams, John Mclaughlin, or Jaco Pastorius. Man I tell you these guys are responsible for a whole lot of musicians playing music today. There problably wouldn't be fusion as we know it today. Jaco was the sound innovator (as you can hear on this disc), John is the musical innovator, and Tony is the revolutionary musician. Columbia/Sony thank you for letting this disc come out, now you are seeing the fruits of some real musicians that played some unbeliveable music in the 70's. Again, why is this selling so well, I mean after all this was way back in 1979 and Jaco and Tony are dead. But their musical footprints still live. Sony the answer is John Mclaughlin to many is the greatest all around (acoustic/electric) guitarist that has ever lived. He is responsible for creating different types of genres of music. Jaco Pastorius to many is the greatest bassist to ever live, and Tony Williams is the greatest drummer to ever live. That is why!!!! It was a time when crafting your instrument was important in America (the 40's-70's). America is in trouble because it is sick. It really is a scary world out there that these record companies are allowing this "non music" out in the mainstream that sells millions, instead of these geniuses.
Sony/Columbia your vaults are filled with this stuff. Check this out. For most of us jazz fusion fans this is a dream disc. The Trio of Doom is basically a group that had only one performance, and we understand this is all you have on this particular group. We know about Havana Jam as well. Here is a deal if you can hear me. Weather Report played at the same venue in 1979. On youtube and dailymotion there have been videos posted of their performance palying the tunes Scarlet Woman, Slang, Birdland. On the albums that you released nearly three decades ago showed they played Black Market and Teen Town (Havana Jam I & II). So I am counting together 5 songs. Why can't we have another live Weather Report, the full show on CD and release the video DVD because CBS filmed the concert.
Aside from all our dreams, the music is great and fresh. The photos are awsome as well are the linear notes.
(Lifetime, Mahavishnu, and Weather Report shook up this world musically, and there really hasn't been anything that groundshaking since. The three men on this disc were some of the leaders of those bands). Again Columbia/Sony you have most of the live fusion in your vaults just sitting there. You are responsible for a lot of the music that is released. We can't find fusion at our local music stores, so we trade all over the world for this stuff. Thank you again, because we have this historic documentation of music that is in it's primitive condition and we didn't have to trade or bootleg this time!

Phelps needs to rest.......2007-07-06
First of all, I'm a huge phelps fan. Huge. He is an incredible talent both vocally and as a song writer. But, i'm concerned about his tour schedule and his more contemporary vocal style. It seems to be taking a toll on his instrument and he doesn't seem as strong as he was five years ago as a performer. He also seems awkward on stage in the dvd and not as seasoned as i would expect. Especially when he's talking. Many of the songs are live repeats of better previously recorded tracks. Get it if you must see phelps live, but I'd stick with his studio albums. Take care of your self Mr. Phelps...I want to be able to continue to enjoy your voice.

I really didn't know about David Phelps until I heard about his upcoming concert in Freeport, Illinois on June 24, 2007. After watching and hearing one of his songs on his Legacy of Love live dvd I was hooked!! He is a wonderful singer and very genuine. I can't wait to see him live in Freeport!!! I purchased this cd/dvd set and it's a perfect cd to walk to - upbeat and inspirational!! Tickets are still available and there will be Church youth groups selling food and drinks. This is being held at the Stephenson County Fairgrounds so there's plenty of parking space. Hope to see lots of fellow David Phelps fans! Thank you David Phelps for sharing your faith and tallent!!!!!!!!!!!
David Phelps - Best Voice in Christian Music.......2007-06-01
David and his family love the Lord. This live CD is great, every track! And listen to the Les Mis song "Bring Him Home" no Jean Valjean ever sang it better! My teenage son got me interested in David as "Virtuoso" may be the most listened to Christian tune by our Christian youth today. The DVD that comes with David recording this CD in concert demonstrates David's sincere love of Christ. Steven Curtis Chapman, Amy Grant, SONICFLOOd, Jars of Clay, Delirious, Avalon, you are all great but move over for David Phelps - THE BEST VOICE IN CHRISTIAN MUSIC TODAY!!!
DVD & CD are appreciated and shared. Very good singing........2007-05-28
I truly think that David is a messager, and I believe that he means every word he says. I am convinced that he conveys with conviction, and, for sure, his talent is truly exceptional. This,(I understand), is his first DVD on his own. The audio was not that good on the song, Gentle Savior. I have this piece on a previous work of his, which he sings so beautifully. Also, the cameraman could have done better with some of the shots of David's performance. Nonetheless, I thought -for the first publication of a DVD- it was outstanding, especially with it being contemporary Christian music, which is not usually my preference. Good job.
AWESOME.......2007-02-08
When David Phelps first left the Gaither Vocal Band and struck out on his own, it took me some time to get use to his music. He has become more of a Contemporary Chrisitian artist. Not to mention he has become quite the songwriter! This CD/DVD was recorded live and is essentially his "greatest hits" with some extras thrown in. I bet you have never heard anyone sing "The Star Spangled Banner" like David! Wow! I am still trying to decide if I like his version of "How Great Thou Art" but if it will get the young people to listen to it's words, it's great!! The DVD comes interspersed with clips of David in the great outdoors, giving little message of faith. It also has "bloopers" . He has a nice little group of musicians with him but we really need to talk to him about his WARDROBE!! But who cares about that when you listen to his voice and his message.

Album Description
Germany's Helloween are undeniably one of the most influential heavy metal bands to emerge from Europe during the 1980s. By taking the harmonies and structure of classic bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and infusing them with the urgency and energy of the growing thrash metal movement, Helloween created something unique and truly embody the essence of 'power metal'. The band remains a strong force today, as proven on this new double CD, Keeper Of The Seven Keys: The Legacy World Tour 2005-2006 Live on 3 Continents. Captured live in Sao Paulo, March 25th, 2006 during their latest global trek, this release is a must for any fan of fantastic Heavy Metal.
Customer Reviews:
great live album by a great band.......2007-04-04
This album sounds great, the song "the king for a 1000 years" its amazing live(yeah 13 minutes with 17 seconds) the track list is magnificent and no question why did they choose brazil, brazilian audience has a lot of energy, they make you feel there all through the album...good job helloween!
Excellent performance by an excellent band.......2007-03-01
Helloween has allways been a great melodic metal band; 1 year ago they released the "Keeper Legacy" album, in my opinion one of their best (if not their very best). This Live album couldn't come out in a better time; For those who like this band, you dont have to think about getting it. The performance was great, the sound quality simply terrific and the track selection almost perfect (excpet for some songs that you really come to miss). I had the chance to see one of the shows of this tour in Europe, and when I heard this for the first time, I almost thought that the guys were playing in front of me again. And dont miss the tracks of the past "Keeper" album performed by Andy Deris and with the sound quality of these days. A great experience for a metal fan. I seriously doubt that you can go wrong with this.
Amazing live album!!!.......2007-02-27
One of the best Live metal albums ever. Helloween are amazing, great set list, amazing sound, great vox a perfect concert!!! The energy from the crowd that this band draws is also unparalled.
Happy Happy Helloween oh oh oh oh.......2007-02-22
This album shows just how powerful Helloween sounds when they play live specially in front of an amazing crowd like Sao Paulo. If you close your eyes and listen to this record you can feel being part of the audience. One thing I dont like so much about this record, is that some songs are over 10 minutes , when they could easily could have chosen to play some shorter songs, but they decided to play mostly songs from the Keeper of the Keys albums. Best treat....I Want Out...just listen to the crowd!

Best so far.......2007-05-16
This collection showcases Legacy 5 honoring God, honoring their Christian music Heritage, honoring each other and truley bringing praise to the Kingdom. The depth of emotion hearing Roger Bennett once again and the quality of the music and message add to this worship experience. I can not choose a favorite song from this cd. The entire piece is a complete package.

Product Description
Unlike the current wave of historical recordings, too often released with mixed results, "Live In Zaandam" is a brand new album dedicated to the most legendary band of the Canterbury School: SOFT MACHINE. Captured in the Netherlands on May 1st 2005, this collection of six pieces (In a jazz-rock fusion vein) is performed by a recent reformation known as SOFT MACHINE LEGACY, with Elton DEAN (Saxophone & keyboards), John ETHERIDGE (Guitar), Hugh HOPPER (Bass) and John MARSHALL (Drums). It's interesting to note that, if they were all members of SOFT MACHINE during the Seventies, they never played simultaneously in this band. Apart from the covers of "Kings And Queens" ("Fourth") and John ETHERIDGE's "Ash", all the others tracks were especially composed for the occasion. Add to this that it's a limited edition CD, released as a joint-venture by the Musea and Moonjune labels, and you'll easily understand that this event goes well beyond the Canterbury School lovers. Let's say it straight away: here's certainly one of the two or three essential albums you cannot afford to miss this year ! The actual last studio album of SOFT MACHINE, one of the greatest rock bands since the Sixties, went back thirty years ago. As time went by yet, many reformings happened and some live performances were played... But nothing prepared us to hear a new album someday ! Under the pseudonym of SOFT MACHINE LEGACY, four veterans, whose particularity is not to have ever played in the same incarnation before, are gathered. Jointly published by the Musea and Moonjune labels in 2006, this eponymous album is also the last discographic appearance of saxophonist Elton DEAN, who passed away little time after the recording sessions. Hugh HOPPER (Bass), John ETHERIDGE (Guitar) and John MARSHALL (Drums) complete the outfit. As always, the music of SOFT MACHINE is undefinable, somewhere between jazz, blues and rock, closer to free-jazz this time, with much improvisation. The album includes classics such as
Customer Reviews:
Divine !.......2005-09-06
Stellar musicianship of 4 former Soft Machine members - from different periods - who reunited recently and called themselves "The Soft Machine Legacy". I was lucky to attend the concert, saw the gig being taped and am even more lucky now to hear it all over again. My feeling of satisfaction when I walked out of the venue on may 10th was justified when I listen to the recording again now. As Elton Dean plays both the sax and the Fender Rhodes, the keyboard gets less attention but Etheridge's contribution and the amazing rhythm section compensate for that! Hard to believe that merely 150 people (at large!) turned up to hear Hopper's bass resonate in that Zaandam cellar...

Good set, good playing, good music. Highly recommended for devotees of the jazz-rock / fusion genre.
Excellent Live Set!.......2005-08-30
A very well-done live set by former members of Soft Machine. The band are in top form, especially guitarist John Etherige, whose composition, Ash, opens the set. Another highlight is Hugh Hopper's, Kings & Queens, which made its debut on SM's Fourth. These guys, like a fine wine, just get better with age.

Album Description
First official domestic live release. Dissection are widely regarded as one of the best & most original Swedish death/black metal bands to emerge from that hotbed in the early 90s. File under 'Majestic Satanic Death Metal'. Nuclear Blast. 2003.

Good, albeit short.......2007-06-04
Dissection, to me atleast, was one of the most inspiring bands to ever come out of Sweden. They used elements of death metal and black metal in perfect harmony on The Somberlain and Storm of the Lights Bane, and ultimately (in my opinion) breathed life back in the dead state of black metal.
Onto this album, this is Dissections only live album released (not counting the live DVD), and is by far a killer. The only problem I had is that not only is it short, with only 6 songs and 1 intro, but it only contains 2 songs from The Somberlain and no songs from the earlier demo tapes. While I do have bootlegs that make up for that, this is still dissapointing.
Still, the song choice is amazing and the musicmanship is top notch. Not only that, but the artwork is some of the best I have ever seen, drawn beautifully by metals greatest artist, Kristian Wåhlin, also known as Necro Lord.

It was worth the wait!.......2003-03-18
Being a huge Dissection fan, I have been actually awaiting this album for a LONG time, and hoping the sound quality can compare to Frozen in Wacken '97. Well... it's actually much BETTER! Every beat is SO tight, the quality is SO clean, and Jon gives the best preformance i've heard to date (STUDIO OR LIVE!!), dispite having his brother on bass and a different drummer from their studio albums, they don't just keep up, they sound like they have always been part of Dissection, so don't let the fact it's not the original lineup stop you from buying this. Now, if only their new studio effort was out... maybe i'll write another review then.
A good purchase.......2003-03-06
This album is basically Storm of the Light's Bane in a live version (has a couple songs from Somberlain). The guitars, of course, aren't as clear and crisp, the drumming slightly loud (but this works well if you like the more powerful/raw sound instead of harmonic), and the vocals are outstanding. Jon's vocals match that on the studio album and are very passionate. Although I may have disturbed your desire to buy this album already, my above comments are in no way negative towards the album. It's an excellent addition to your Dissection collection, and for those of you looking for new stuff this isn't, and for those of you new to Dissection entirely I'd recommend going to their studio albums first. And for those of you fortunate enough to be Dissection fans, YES, buy this cd. The booklet has input from Jon concerning what each song is about, it has 3 pictures of him (he looks like Axel Rose), and the original lyrics to each song. The line-up is somewhat different. No Ohman or Palmdahl on this album. Instead Jon's younger brother, Emil Nodveidt, is on bass, and the drummer is different also (can't recall his name). I think it's interesting in itself that the two brothers are playing together in this album (for those of you who don't reject your sentimentality).
So my final rate of course is four solid stars, a very good album for any Dissection or Black Metal fan, but for newbies, go to the studio albums prior to purchasing this Live Version. Oh, and as concerns the title, I think it's a play on words, as Jon means "Evil" legacy and not so much "Live" legacy. Veterans, BUY THE ALBUM. Newbies, try the other albums first (they're easily each 5 solid stars). To conclude, there's not much excess to say other than that this cd is Storm of the Light's Bane in Live form. No more and certainly no less.
