Recorded live over three nights in Los Angeles in 1998, Shoutin' in Key provides an accurate snapshot of late-1990s Taj and his all-inclusive view of the blues. In fact, blues is really just one ingredient in a stew that offers hard-driving, horn-fueled R&B, gently swaying Caribbean-style rhythms, slow-burning soul, loose reggae jams, 12-bar stomps, smart jazzy grooves, and polished country-blues updates. On this album, he's most compelling the further afield he moves. His reading of Delroy Wilson's "Rain from the Sky," a Jamaican standard, is a highlight here, as is his own Latin-jazz-infused instrumental, "Sentidos Dulce." And he delivers fine readings of signature songs like "Mail Box Blues," "Corrina," and "Leavin' Trunk" as well. While he's not at his most consistently inspired throughout, there are certainly enough high points to make this a worthwhile introduction to the Mahal style. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Blends all sorts of musical flavors into a refined amalgam.......2003-03-03
This cleanly recorded, live set from Taj Mahal backed by the excellent, tight Phantom Blues Band, blends all sorts of musical flavors into a refined amalgam. The strain, stress, and anguish that make too many forays into contemporary blues a sure-fire ticket for a migraine are cast aside for grace, craft, and smoothness. On the other hand, there is enough edge here to add texture. In many ways, the energy, vibe, and diversity here remind me of the superb but obscure "Rust" by Kevin Brown, must more so than the largely sterile renderings from say Eric Clapton.
Everything comes together without sounding contrived or forced, and Taj Mahal, as always, marches to his own drum beat (well, actually some snappy percussion work from Tony Braunagel). Mick Weaver, a fellow who has sat in with about everybody at one time or another, handles the keyboards deftly. Danny Freeman, who cut his chops with the borthers Vaughan hits the right tone throughout, and Larry Fulcher clearly knows his way around on bass. The Texacali horns provide the bright seasoning, and Taj deftly stays out front without quashing everyone else's good time or taxing himself too much.
This recording would make a great soundtrack for a ramble through the country or a backyard cookout.
Awesome Blues.......2002-10-30
Next to Eric Clapton, I'd have to say that Taj's blues are the best around. Look no further than track 3, Ain't That Alotta Love? for the perfectly executed blues song. From the bass line to the vocals, you don't get better. This album has found its way among my short list of classics, and well-deserving. I can't wait to get the chance to see him jam live in person!
Care for an appetizer anyone? Wine, cheese and blues perhaps.......2000-07-25
Virtuosic playing and uncommonly clean sound quality aside, the diversity of material prevents this set from ever catching fire. It's a collection of appetizers that never adds up to a full meal.
Taj Mahal - Shoutin In Key.......2000-07-16
As an avid fan of Taj's work for over two decades I am sorry to say that this album misses the benchmark that Taj has set from his earlier works. The Phantom Blues band is tight and on top of it's game but Taj does not rise to the meet the rest of the band. For a really good live album check out An Evening Of Acoustic Music, recorder live in Germany.
Excellent Blues!.......2000-06-27
Excellent show of years of blues vocals and experience! Taj Mahal is a legend in his own time.

Some fine hard bop jazz playing.......2005-04-08
This combo is lead by Shirley Scott, the funky hard bop organist, and her hubby Stanley Turrentine on sax. Exellent music, and a fine version of Gravy Waltz. Scott & Turrentine always sound inspired when they play together, and the whole group is in a swingin' soulful groove throughout.
Vintage Hammond B3 and Sax.......2000-07-01
This is vintage Hammond B3 and sax by the husband and wife team of Shirley Scott and Stanley Turrentine. This is classic "Philly Area" music. I am a Jimmy Smith fan, but Shirley Scott shows she knows how pound on a B3! I don't have to tell you that Stanley Turrentine can play a tenor sax. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes this venue.

Alive and Kickin' and Screamin' and Shoutin' and Mottin'.......2006-03-10
After the release of their fourth album `Lunch' (1972), a very lacklustre affair, Britain's premier Art-Rock band `Audience' imploded. Things had started so promisingly with their original self titled debut album in 1969 released by Polydor Records. But although it met with great critical acclaim the record buying public turned a deaf ear and hardly a copy left the record shop. The band was immediately dropped like a hot potato by Polydor, to be immediately picked up by the new progressive rock label Charisma Records run by Tony Stratton Smith, who had been impressed with the band when he saw them supporting Led Zeppelin at the Lyceum in London, England.
The band was then allowed into the studio and given as much time as they wanted to come up with a new album. The band was perhaps given a bit too much rope. Writing and producing the album themselves, `Friends, Friends, Friend' is a good album, but lacked any real control. But it did establish `Audience' as a contender in the eternal rock stars quest for fame and fortune. The record sold in reasonable quantities and so encouraged after a year's touring they returned to the studio, this time under the production care of Gus Dudgeon.
When they appeared back into the light from the studio, they had created a masterpiece: `House On The Hill' (1971). Gus Dudgeon had done a wonderful job in bringing out the strengths in these fine young musicians. The writing was superb, and the selection of Jay Hawkins `I Put A Spell On You' was literally inspired. The title track summed up the sound `Audience `had developed for themselves.
Howard Werth had a unique soulful voice, and his choice of instrument, an electric nylon strung guitar, gave the band a distinctive sound. Keith Gemmell was perhaps the number one saxophone and flute player of his day. It can be fairly laid at Keith Gemmell's door that he really made the saxophone a hard rock instrument, whilst his flute playing lent light and colour to the sound. In Trevor Williams on bass and Tony Connor on drums they had a rock solid rhythm section to build upon. Tony Connor's style also gave the band a bit of a jazzy feel, so there were not many elements of music that were left out of the `Audience's' repertoire.
But even with the release of a separately recorded single `Indian Summer' (1971), which started to rapidly climb up the American charts, the band and record label felt despondent about their lack of immediate commercial success, which in hindsight is hardly surprising considering the competition they were up against, Led Zeppelin, Free, Genesis, Pink Floyd, etc. They should have perhaps bided their time instead of pushing out the poor `Lunch' and splitting up.
Keith Gemmell joined various bands including the brilliant but underrated `Sammy' and `Stackridge' before concentrating on a successful career in session work. Trevor Williams followed Keith Gemmell into session work. Tony Connor took over the drum stool of `Hot Chocolate' where he remains today. Howard Werth had a solid solo career as well as toying with the idea of replacing Jim Morrison in `The Doors', an avenue that was fortunately pretty quickly closed.
Rock `n' roll is a funny old world and after often bumping into each other over the years they decided after thirty three years to give it another go. Keith Gemmell, Howard Werth, and Trevor Williams were all keen, but it was too much to ask Tony Connor to give up the security of his position behind the kit with Hot Chocolate who have a very heavy gigging schedule.
So the hunt was on for a new skinsman, the band had to search long and hard to find somebody as versatile as their former drummer. But when they came across John Fisher they had their man. He had plenty of rock experience, including a stint with the Blue Bishops, but had also served in big bands, leaving himself open to any form of music. As `Audience' were always just as likely to slide into bossa nova, folk, jazz, or kick off into heavy progressive rock, or even the blues, `Audience' had always refused to be pigeonholed, as any one of these things. John's open mindedness was essential, so was his sense of humour, playing with this bunch of jokers.
Once rehearsals were complete for the first time in thirty three years `Audience' hit the road. After their first tour the last concert at Deal in Kent's Astor Theatre was recorded for release. Some may say that a live album from Audience may be thirty three years too late, as if a live album had been released in 1973, it may have broken them into the big time then. But better late than never I say.
There's something about this album that defies believe If these guys have been apart for so long, how come they have almost telepathic sense in their play whilst at the same time being so relaxed, and obviously enjoying themselves? You can actually hear them grinning at one another through the music as they play along. One could be forgiven for thinking they had done nothing else in the intervening years.
There are ten songs on display. Three from `The House On The Hill', opener `Your Not Smilin' - a jaunty and well chosen song to play first up, the haunting `I Had A Dream' and a ten minute version of the title song with plenty of improvisation from Keith Gemmell; one song from their debut `Leave It Unsaid' and one from Friends, Friends, Friend; the moving `Nothin' You Said'; which leaves room for two songs from Howard Werth's last solo album, `The Evolution Myth Explodes' - a Werth composition Zig-Zag and Swirl, plus a stunning interpretation of Lennon and McCartney's `I Wanna Be Your Man', which the boys originally wrote for `The Rolling Stones' when they could not write themselves a hit back in 1963. Audience have taken the song, taken it apart, and slowly burnt it back together again. There is no point doing cover versions unless you have something to add to it or a different slant to add. `Call Me Responsible' is a chance for Keith Gemmell to show of his skills and sense of humour. This is immediately followed by the old James Brown classic `The Bells' which gives Howard Werth his chance to show that the talents of his throat have in no way diminished. Finally, as an encore, the band launches into the late great Tim Rose's `Morning Dew', which will send shivers up and down your spine, such is the emotion poured into the song by the band.
As a live album it may have come a little late in the band's career, but nothing diminishes pure raw talent. I for one hope that the band gets some more belated success, as news seeps through that we may be treated to an all new studio album later this year.
You may think the name of this album a little strange but actually it just goes to send up the band's sense of humour. The album cover shows an audience sitting in complete boredom watching a band, until you look a little closer and realize that it is a collage of the band themselves in the audience watching themselves (the look of distaste on Keith Gemmell's face is hilarious). Which just goes to show that Audience are indeed `Alive and Kickin' and Screamin' and Shoutin'.
Mott the Dog.
Excellent re-entry from a nearly forgotten band.......2005-12-30
I rediscovered Audience several years ago after finding their classic "House on the Hill" CD, a great album which in turn made me want to find all their albums as they got reissued - the most recent being their self-titled first album, which has been made available recently on Repertoire. A very original blend of electric/classical guitar, saxes and flutes, bass, drums and powerful vocals by Howard Werth sound like no one else in progressive or pop music worlds, with sometimes lengthy explorations and improvisations that are simply fantastic in their virtuosity. Audience avoid the bombastic elements pervasive in a lot of prog by having very much a blues aesthetic which makes their delivery very soulful and passionate. Their latest offing is a live document from last year's reunion and includes several selections from their catalogue, plus a few from Howard Werth's solo repertoire. An interesting solo improvisation from Saxman Keith Gemmel and the standard "Morning Dew" are also notable. Definitely worth a listen or three if you're a fan of progressive-pop. Not a brilliant recording, but not bad either. I look forward to a new studio offering, which I hear is in the works. Welcome back Audience!

"Eric Shoutin' Sheridan and his band vigorously revive lesser-known R&B numbers from the heyday of jump blues in the forties to the ripping fifties R&B of Ike Turner and James Brown
a spicy disc full of the ebullient Sheridan at his best." - DC BLUES
Eric Shoutin' Sheridan & The Uptown Rhythm Kings are still jumping the blues, and those familiar with the band will know what to expect! "Shoutin" certainly describes Sheridan's vocals, suggestive of such Ike Turner vocalists as Eugene "Sly" Fox and Billy Gayles. Although personnel have changed, the group still walks the groove that will keep even the most jaded swing dancer's feet well exercised. Live Show includes tunes by Albert King, Joe Liggins, Clarence Garlow, James Brown and more.

Jimmy Nelson is certainly in the running for the Best Singer You've Never Heard Of award. After scoring a hit way back in 1951, he recorded a few more times before basically vanishing from sight. Surprise, surprise: he's still active, and still in fine voice after all these years, as Rockin' and Shoutin' the Blues attests. This CD has it all: Nelson can growl one moment and sound smooth as honey the next, and dig into bittersweet ballads like "How Long Blues" and lighthearted romps like "Boogie Woogie Country Girl" with equal aplomb. "I'll Miss Show Business" is almost certainly autobiographical, and "New Shack Lover" has the sort of sexy rhythm such a song requires. Nelson's backing band is excellent as well; check out Matt McCabe's piano work on "How Long Blues," or the sax and guitar solos on "When You're Smiling." If there's any justice, Nelson will finally get the recognition he deserves. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Definitely a WC Handy winner; one of the best out.......1999-08-28
The music on this CD is reminiscent of the old school and is full of delightful surprizes. The selections of the songs, i.e. jump blues, Texas-style blues, and jazz is absolutely refreshing. The musicians including Houston legend Clarence Hollimon on guitar as well as members/ex-members of Roomful of Blues ads a special flavor to the music that makes it very desirable.
Definitely a must for any blues lover!
