There are more glamorous artists in the contemporary Christian music stable; there are surely those with a slicker, more pop-based sound. And then there is Michael Card, Bible scholar, teacher, and musician. Not unlike John Michael Talbot, with whom he made the somewhat controversial Brother to Brother album, Card seems beyond such worldly concerns, crafting intelligent parables and homilies in deceptively simple structures. Following that logic, while a cursory look might poise Card as a bandwagon jumper, Starkindler: A Celtic Conversation Across Time is a bountiful harvest of rhyme and reason; all the better to glorify the fundamental truths of Christ-centered worship. "Be Thou My Vision" and "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" are but two outstanding examples. From their humblest beginnings, many of our most familiar hymns are rooted in centuries-old traditional Irish tunes, and that is the premise on which Starkindler is built. Thoughtful arrangements incorporate fiddle, harp, and tin whistle to Card's uniquely chorded guitar work. --Paige La Grone --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Card's delightful versions of familiar medolies.......2004-11-28

I believe that Michael Card's music is truly inspired by God and am in awe of this CD in which Card records old, familiar melodies in his own original and unique new ways. I like the orchestral arrangements and appreciate the variety of instrumentation throughout the entire CD. I really enjoy Starkindler (by M. Card) and am very impressed by both tracks of "Be Thou My Vision" with the reprise being absolutely heavenly. I did not think I would like this CD as most of the songs are not written by M. Card, however, I was delightfully surprised by his interpretations of old songs and the way one can feel the inspiration of the Creator in all his work. This is truly now one my favorite CDs of Michael Card. I also enjoyed the fact that with this CD as well as all Michael Card music one can hear and understand each word of each song, which is a very high priority for this artist. Again I am so pleased and would highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves Christian music.

2 out of 5 stars Orchestration seems to overwhelm the vocals.......2004-09-12

After listening to previews from this CD, I picked it up because I especially enjoy simple hymns of the kind selected for this list. But it surprised me to hear how "done up" the arrangements were: too many instruments, at times, and often too much harmonic or rhythmic complexity backing very basic melodies. Frankly, some of the arrangements seemed to mimic some of the worst aspects of canned Celtic and new age music. This is a promising program and I would not discount Card's ability to sing it well. But his voice is simply lost amid the various instruments strutting their stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Relaxing Journey through time.......2003-02-01

Michael Card has masterfully produced these old favourites.

5 out of 5 stars One of Card's best . . ........1999-09-11

Michael Card's music always draws your heart to Jesus, and this one does so in an exceptional way. For sheer worship & love of our Saviour, this album is pure delight.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Card sings from the heart.......1999-07-16

No matter what Michael sings, you can feel God's love spread through his voice. It is always very calming and appealing.

5 out of 5 stars Too bad there's only 5 stars!.......2002-09-04

I grew up listening to Michael Card's music. I particularly loved this album because it joined two things that I love dearly.Hymns and Celtic music.Michael's talent is certainly amazing. He began performing when he was still in college. He plays nine instruments and is an amature astronomer. So you can see why "starkindler" is not just a desplay of the gifts God's given Him but it is also his tribute to His maker as He gazes at the sky in awe of the Creator of the Universe, the "Star kindler" who made the heavens and the earth.
I would definately reccomend this to anyone who's seeiking to buy something good and uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Good Celtic Music.......2002-01-18

I was very impressed by this CD. Michael takes some of my favorite traditional hymns and delivers them in a style that moves and touches me. Something about the Celtic style delivers a moving tone to the hymns. He starts off with my favorite hymn-"Be Thou My Vision". This is followed by his own "Starkindler". There is a lively rendition of "I Will Arise and Go to Jesus." Darwin Hobbs vocals are great on "Let All Things Now Living" and along with Michael on "The King of Love My Shepherd Is". This is a great CD when you are more in the mood for some traditional stuff.

5 out of 5 stars REVERENTIAL AND CHRIST HONORING MUSIC.......2001-06-01

I am ultra-conservative in my listening habits; which simply means I don't listen to music that is not God centered and God glorifying. This CD meets my high standards and more. I know that if you are a christian you will be tremendously blessed by Michael Card's work on this CD--that is unless you just don't like celtic style music. But even if you don't think that celtic music is for you, you may think differently after listening to this beautifully produced CD.

5 out of 5 stars AMEN and AMEN and AMEN!.......2001-02-23

- to all that's already been said of this heart-stirring recording. Reading what all of you dear brothers and sisters have said about it prompted me to order 5 more copies to give away. Two small caveats: it is indeed way too short and thus demands to be played over and over! Also, Michael: why did you change the wording in "Be Thous My Vision" from "man's empty praise" to "man's empty gain"? Was that a slip of the tongue? If not, then don't mess with my main hymn, Michael! This is one of two I must have sung at my funeral; the other is also on the disc: Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy - stunningly arranged here. Another favorite is the old folk tune "Star of the County Down" (which I learned from Van Morrison/The Chieftains' delightful Irish Heartbeat album) given Christiam content. COME YE - any who can't get enough of Michael Card, celtic music, and above all music that motivates the whole body and soul to worship. As you listen to Starkindler over and over, you will feel each time as if you have received a passionate love letter from Jesus Himself!

5 out of 5 stars Kindle my heart!.......2000-12-16

This is my first album by Mr. Card and I absolutely love it. I have grown to love Celtic music and when I found this CD I didn't hesitate to purchase it. It made me get up and dance and sit there and be mellow! The only thing I disliked was that the CD is only 33 minutes or so long. With music this awesome I needed an hour or more.
