Amazon.com essential recording
If the bazillion packagings and repackagings of Mahalia Jackson's music confound you and you don't know where to start, this expertly compiled, carefully annotated double-disc box set is for you. Jackson wasn't just gospel music's first international superstar--she was among its earliest adherents and inventors. Working with the great composer and former blues singer Thomas A. Dorsey in the late 1930s, Jackson gave a distinctly blues-trained, jazzy sass and grace to Dorsey's material and the other hymns and spirituals she sang. More than any other performer, she helped to define gospel music itself as a transcendent, rootsy, melismatic, and heady spiritual sound. Culled from her sides for Columbia in the 1950s and 1960s, some of the arrangements in the set are not ideal and may sound quite a bit dated, but that voice shines and soars and dives straight to the center of your heart. Whether backed by a simple organ or piano or with full studio accompaniment, Jackson's booming, instantly recognizable contralto is indescribable, exciting, and forever a wonder to behold. And if you think that's an exaggeration, you don't own this record. --Mike McGonigal
Customer Reviews:
Awesome.......2007-06-15
The music is great and the singer is phenomenal. All in all a great purchase.
Listen to the piano bass line!.......2006-01-19
Listen to the piano bass line in "Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho." I can listen to that alone and rejoice! Then, there is Mahalia Jackson's voice, a little rougher than Ella Fitzgerald but there is a child-like joy as she sings these gospel songs. For this evidence, listen to, "If I Can Help Somebody." The recording is superb as if I were listening to the album on vinyl. Superb stuff!
Would have loved to been in the audience..........2005-08-29
About a year ago, I was looking to expand my Gospel collection. I remembered hearing Ms. Jackson's version of "Go Tell it on the Mountain" when I was young -- and I remembered that I liked that song, liked it a LOT.
Thinking back to my younger days, I took a chance and invested in this CD, and Volume II, at the same time. WOW!! Suffice it to say that those two Mahalia CDs now receive more playing time than any of my other CDs.
One drawback; however, I learned not to play these on my stereo when it was time to go to sleep -- I just couldn't keep still -- my feet kept moving to the music -- the music is just too powerful, too stimulating -- had to limit it to daytime use only.
I would have loved to have been in the live audience to hear Ms. Jackson sing while she drew breath upon this earth.
Does it get any better than this ... I think NOT.
I hope I run into Mahalia and Elvis when I make it to heaven, and I hope that I get to hear them belt out those gospel tunes with their heavenly voices -- definitely something to look forward to! Wow, again!
What's not to love about a Mahalia Jackson CD?.........2005-04-23
I bought this CD and Volume II back in 2002. My mother loved Mahalia Jackson, so I grew up listening to her in vinyl round the clock it seemed. I actually thought I couldn't stand to hear another Mahalia Jackson song as long as I lived. But as an adult, I found myself humming some of the songs my mother had played over and over, and one day I realized I missed Mahalia's voice. When I bought these collections of hers, I actually went searching specifically for Mahalia Jackson music. Imagine my mother's surprise when I told her I had Mahalia Jackson blasting in my house the way she'd done when I was growing up! :-) There are still more Mahalia Jackson songs that I'm looking for that, in all the songs on these collections, weren't included. That's my only disappointment with these. But the quality of the recordings -- classic Mahalia!
WOW!! After All These Years..........2004-01-19
...she is still considered the "Queen of Gospel". She has been dead for about 30 years and NO gospel artist can compare to her. Not even the late Rev. James Cleveland can get this much respect. When you hear Mahalia sing, it's like GOD singing. That's how powerful her voice was. Even when I have my doubts on life, I depend on Mahalia to pick me up (and she does). This collection is the best collection out there (IMO) on Ms. Jackson. I recommend this to all. I wished I was alive to have heard her sing live, but at least I have this collection.

Ebenezer Baptist Church's Mother Mildred's Kid's Affirmation.......2005-01-15
There is an unusual opportunity with amazon.com to preview the audio adaptation of the beautiful contralto voices that're accompanied unbelievably: Professionally-named "Mahalia Jackson", whose followings include the missing-in-action true sources of the marching music that helped the 20th Century still-slaves overcome. If your families sang aloud as fearlessly as mine did, then you want to experience these. You can order "Mahalia Jackson's" inspirational sharings to hear whenever you awaken feeling low. Or, you can listen to the samples before checking if there's another of "Mahalia Jackson's Gospels, Spirituals, &Hymns" available online to hear at least a tiny trace: one of my favorites is "Martin, Luther and John." The music is so fabulous: You can substitute the names of your missing-in-action loved ones to cheer you until they're alive with you like when we'd been here only a couple of winks. Thanks, www.amazon.com.
From, "(&Svenie)" P.S. "I'll Be Down To Get You With A Taxi, Honey" is also a neat tune for these times. But, be cautious not to promise what you can't deliver, 'cause we know somebody who did sing that only later to endure giving a ride to her teacher's dog which had fleas on those automatically dropped magnets...

Customer Reviews:
Historically important choral music, wonderfully performed!.......2004-05-25
For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.
WHAT A MIGHTY GOD presents 20th Century choral arrangements of music from the African American spiritual tradition rooted in spirituals and gospels, including Harry T. Burleigh's "My Lord, What a Mornin'" (1929), "Walk Together Children" (William Henry Smith, 1937) and more contemporary composers like Sanford Moore's "Go Tell It On The Mountain" (1993.)
There are excellent notes about the genre, however, in light of the historical significance of this music I'm surprised and disappointed to find no biographical information about the composers, not even birth and/or death dates, with this CD. I feel this is a crucial component in an "outreach" project like this, especially since most of these composers are not well known. Still I highly recommend it for the music alone.
The other three CDs are available as single titles, or in the boxed set THE WITNESS COLLECTION which includes:
WHAT A MIGHTY GOD: Spirituals and Gospels for Chorus
DANCE LIKE THE WIND: Music of Today's Black Composers
GOT THE SAINT LOUIS BLUES: Classical Music in the Jazz Age

Golden Gate Quartet review.......2005-09-30
First heard their sounds during WWII, the Golden Gate Quartet introduced me to the wonderful rhythms and blends of gospel and spiritual music. Love this collection, but wish it had two I remember from way back when - "Dip Your Fingers In the Water" and "Dem Bones". Otherwise, a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
excellent music.......2004-04-04
Well, I'm not an expert in gospel music or the Golden Gate Quartet. But this is great music. A few years ago I pirated a copy of "Swing Down, Chariot" on Napster, and I loved it. I could only find a few more songs by these guys there, but I liked them all. For several years they stayed in the back of my mind while I was buying rock, rap, country and folk cds, but finally I couldn't resist anymore and I bought this cd.
The music is fun, and the singers are incredibly talented. This had to be some of the most entertaining music of the 1940s; I wish I could go back then to sit next to a radio and hear how it sounded when they were pioneers.
Hey, if you're not into old music, you might enjoy this anyway. Especially if you enjoy Moby, you can hear their influence on him.
Of course there are a lot of other Golden Gate albums and collections available, but if you can't make up your mind, you can get this one with confidence. It has a great selection of music, all of their biggest hits, from throughout their career. The sound quality is excellent. If there is any problem, it is that the "20 page booklet" with "rare photos" has about a sentence on each page, and maybe six photos. Yes, the booklet is disappointing, but the music is great.

Album Description
On a warm spring evening in 2002, a meeting took place in Norway. A group of people convened to discuss the possibility of making an album that would impact the music scene. One rehearsal took place later that same year and ideas and plans were thrown back and forth. However, due to prior commitments and time conflicts, the line up was forced to change. But the core of the group maintained the idea and finally, in the fall 2004, the decision was made to make it happen. SCUM was spawned! SCUM is a unique project in many aspects; first and foremost its line up is probably one of the most interesting gatherings of people to record an album in a long time... Casey Chaos (Amen), Samoth (Zyklon, ex-Emperor), Faust (ex-Emperor), Cosmocrator (MindGrinder) and Happy Tom (Turbonegro). Each member in this project is a leader, which makes everything much more powerful. You have the eccentric punk rocker Casey Chaos, Samoth and Faust appearing together on an album for the first time in over 10 years, denim stud-rocker Happy Tom and the fresh blood of Cosmocrator. Before entering the renowned Crystal Canyon studio (Turbonegro/ We/ Euroboys etc.) in Oslo in September, Samoth, Faust and Cosmocrator had only a few rehearsals during which they tested out basic riffs and possible arrangements. However, the songs on the actual album ended up being entirely created and nailed down during the three week long studio session. This was essential to capture the raw and energetic atmosphere the band desired. Twelve tracks were recorded, ten of which are on this album. Guest appearances include Mortiis, Nocturno Culto (Darkthrone) and Knut "Euroboy" Schreider (Turbonegro/ Euroboys). One of the basic thoughts behind Scum was to gather a group of musicians and friends who in many ways are well known in their respective scenes, but together - as a unit - come out as a constellation very rare in its own kind. The blueprint for the project was the spirit of Norwegian Black Metal mixed with a punk rock attitude. This was brought to life by the beliefs and perfect mistakes, some that you may or may not know, of all of its members. One of the challenges, when holding members from various bands and musical fields, is to maintain a clear vision of the project. The primary vision was to create an album unique in its own kind, created by innovators rather than followers. Call it death punk, black "n roll or whatever tag comes to mind. This is the spirit of a sincere respect for music and the spirit of lifelong dedication. This is an album of action and freedom. An unique alliance to address the state of affairs in music, and bring life to a dead and politically correct society. SCUM has just begun to spread its filth and disease to your infected culture! This is the Gospels for the Sick! Welcome onboard! Protest Life, the first music video from the album, will be ready shortly.

Don't bother.......2006-07-21
I am both a Christian and Wakeman fan but I returned this CD after one listen. Listen to the tracks provided by Amazon to get a sense of the music.
Highly recommended !.......2002-01-17
If you are a Rick Wakeman enthusiast, you must add this to your collection. If you are a Christian, listen to The New Gospels very carefully; you will surely feel a deep emotional reaction to this music. The voice of Ramon Remedios is extraordinary. I know there are several versions of The New Gospels. In addition to the CD I bought the Video mentioned in the other review. I also highly recommend the video. I believe Rick Wakeman added on to the original to make it a more compleat message on The Gospel. I feel that the length of this recording is now "just right". Listen and enjoy!
In my opinion. . ........2001-11-10
Another reviewer of this work calls it an unnecessary remake and says to seek out the first version. In my opinion, this one is better for several reasons. First of all, the keyboard sounds on this version are not as "cold" or "sharp" as on the first version. Secondly, there is more narration, which greatly adds to the overall work (however, I would have preferred Powell to be the narrator on this one, also). Third, the addition of "The Cross" to this version is great, and Rick even considers this track to be the best he has ever written. Plus, the track order on this one seems to flow better than the original. If you enjoy this work, you definitely owe it to yourself to buy the video, "The Word: A Musical Spectacular On The Life Of Christ" available from Amazon.com.
Uncalled-for Remake.......2000-11-03
This is a beautiful work, musically as well as for those who appreciate dramatic readings from the Bible. My problem with it is wondering WHY was it done? In 1986 Wakeman recorded THE GOSPELS (reissued on CD as THE WORD AND THE GOSPELS) with The Eton College Choir, tenor Ramon Remedios, and narrator Robert Powell (the star of the JESUS OF NAZARETH TV-miniseries!). A glorious work clocking in at 86:32. At 97:32, this 1995 redo is just too long; rearranging certain tracks seem to make it drag longer than it already does, and while Remedios returned in fine form I'm afraid narrator Garfield Morgan just doesn't match the original. For Wakeman "completists" only; all others I suggest search out the earlier album, his first and still perhaps best "spiritual"/"religious" project.
