5 out of 5 stars Ornette's best?!?! I think so........2006-10-18

Absolutely stunning and brilliant. the concert on disc 1 is a ridiculously good sound recording and a mesmerizing performance from start to finish. To my ears it's the most exciting jazz recording I've ever heard. The second disc only pales in comparisson. The sound on that one is more muddled, but still good for a live recording and the music is stellar.

Esp. for one who had never heard Ornette's music from this era ('68) apparently I'd been missing his most vibrant music. I didn't think it was possible!

If you haven't heard this yet, you need to. that's all I can tell you, it's incredible.

3 out of 5 stars 4.5/5 star performance, 2 star sound........2006-02-28

"The Love Revolution" collects two performances from Ornette Coleman's quartet's Europeean tour in early 1968-- during this period, Coleman performed with a two-bass quartet including Charlie Haden and David Izenzon (both bassists) and drummer Ed Blackwell. This group is pretty much undocumented-- only a pair of spotty bootlegs surfaced. Those two are what "The Love Revolution" is-- live shows from Rome (February 8, 1968) and Milan (February 5). The sound is somewhat improved (although quite frankly, it still sounds like bootleg recordings), but it's really the performance that's the goal with these.

The Rome show is sonically the superior of the two-- it's clean with a relatively even balance, although the basses sometimes get a bit muddle and indistinct. My guess is it's a poorly recorded radio broadcast. Four titles are performed, the first two ("Lonely Woman" and "Monsieur le Prince") with Coleman on alto, "Forgotten Children" finds the leader on trumpet and "Buddha Blues" puts him on shenai, a Middle Eastern reed. The latter is most intriguing as I can't think of a single issued recording featuring Coleman on the instrument, which seems to inspire him to a frantic improv, pushed forth by a simply fantastic arco counterpoint from one bass over a fiercely swinging rhythm. "Forgotten Children" feels related to "Just For You" and ends up with a laid-back theme and a more aggressive improvisation from the leader, whose rather unique trumpet technique is on display. The two tracks with Coleman on alto though are the real gems on this disc-- "Lonely Woman", taken an octave lower than the classic recording on "The Shape of Jazz to Come", is energetic and powerful, with Coleman performing brilliantly over a delicate wash of support from the basses. "Monsieur le Prince" is a bouncey, chirping theme and proves to be essentially an alto feature in the form of any number of up-tempo Coleman compositions.

The second disc, recorded at the Teatro Lirico in Milan, is quite a bit less appealing from a sonic standpoint. This has all the clear hallmarks of an audience recording-- that fuzzy theater sound to it, although the audience seems to be dead silent, which leads me to wonder whether the source was not a poorly dubbed broadcast. Three pieces, all of which The opener, "Tutti", a piece that I (and for that matter Jamaaladeen Tacuma) have always thought of as "Dancing in Your Head" (due to its prominent placement on that album) gets an extended (23 minute) reading, with Coleman ecstatically stating the theme and then entering into an extended solo of enormous inventiveness. But trumping him is a bass dialog where one bassist seems to enter in theme variation and the other responds to him. "Three Wisemen and the Saint" is a bluesy, explosive piece, with Coleman digging deep and pulling out all the stops in the sort of improvisation that is usually associated with free jazz, frantic energy, upper register expositions and even occasional overblows make their way into his performance. This kind of performance is somewhat unusual for Coleman and is really intriguing to hear. The closer, "New York", is a slow blues, Coleman plays a brief solo before turning over to an arco solo that is just absolutely lovely and lush, and quite frankly worth the cost of the entire set.

The performances on these CDs is fantastic, but it is important to note these are repackaged (and perhaps still) bootlegs. Sonically, this is not anywhere near a professional sounding recording. If you can deal with that, these are fine shows to have, otherwise save this for the hardcore collectors.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, But Stales Over Time........2002-09-04

I originally bought this cd several years ago at ICTHUS, immediately after hearing Newsong perform. It was great listening to a band that wasn't afraid to use a wide variety of instruments from djembes and rainsticks to bagpipes, accordians and harmonicas. That's the reason I bought this cd. My free favorite songs on the album are:

"Love Revolution"

"Miracles"

"Rhythm of the World"

With that said, I must admit that the album as a whole has staled. I still enjoy listening to my three favorite songs on the album, but the rest of the album sounds like mediocre beats copied from popular music. I haven't listened to any Newsong albums since, but I hope that the band continues in the vein of "Miracles", "Love Revolution", and "Rhythm of the World", pushing musical boundaries as artists, rather than just copying the drab found in popular music and changing a few lyrics so Jesus is mentioned.

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat.......2000-05-16

Awesome cd. Upbeat soulful vocal cd. Love Miracles, Love Revolution, Rythmn of the World, More Fun that Sin, and Love Gets in the Way. I might as well say that I love the whole cd. I own every newsong cd with Russ Lee as lead vocalist and I have never been disappointed. Incredibly talented group of vocalists and songwriters. You won't regret buying this cd or any other newsong cd.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB.......2000-03-28

What a wonderful, uplifting collections of songs. My favorite is "Miracles"....I believe in miracles, I'm a miracle myself! Every song on this CD is an opportunity to praise God. I've never been disappointed with a Newsong CD!

2 out of 5 stars Remembering Past Enchantments And Past Ills.......2004-06-07

Few composers outside of the classical canon have expressed the ineffable as beautifully as Ennio Morricone. The Italian Morricone, who has written scores of wildly varying quality for over 400 films, came to international prominence with and is still best - known in America for his "Spaghetti Western" scores of several classic Sergio Leone films of the Sixties, such as A Fistful of Dollars (1964), The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966), and Once Upon A Time In The West (1969).

With the Leone scores, Morricone created musical pieces structured like complex mathematical equations, many of which were suffused with a driving, hypnotic, and archetypal power. In fact, the soundtrack for The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly was so dramatically dynamic that it thoroughly outstripped the finished film in terms of imaginative potential. Only with Once Upon A Time In The West did Leone create a film well crafted and realized enough to match Morricone's entrancing, playful, and occasionally perditious score. Similarly, Dario Argento's The Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1969) almost completely failed to utilize Morricone's contribution, the best portions of which were heard only dimly and sporadically in the finished film. Leone's late masterpiece, Once Upon A Time In America (1984), two - thirds a perfect film, also failed to fully rise to the occasion of Morricone's simultaneously poignant, wistful, and wonderfully exuberant score.

Today, Morricone's work is available on literally hundreds of soundtracks and soundtrack compilations dedicated to the composer, very few of which are entirely satisfying. An Ennio Morricone Anthology (1995), which contains 45 tracks from 39 films produced in Italy from 1965 onward, perpetuates this frustrating tradition.

Of the 45 tracks, about a third represent Morricone realizing or approaching the height of his talent, another third are fairly interesting but ultimately repetitious and self-cannibalizing, and the final third, which may have worked reasonably well within the context of the films they were written for, never rise above the status of shrill, discordant, and bellowing kitsch (several attempt a Henry Mancini - like levity and fall flat). In fact, there is a great deal of healthy, raw, and leveling vulgarity even in some of Morricone's most famous compositions, such as "Le Vent, Le Cri" from 1981's The Professional and "Chi Mai" from 1971's Maddalena, both of which are included.

Those seeking haunting compositions on the scale of "L'Estasi Dell 'Oro" or "Il Triello" from The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly or "Poverty" from Once Upon A Time In America will be disappointed to find very few pieces approaching their caliber here, especially if already familiar with such well - known pieces such as "Moscow Farewell" from the 1987 film of the same name or the otherworldly "Il Gatto A Nove Code" from The Cat O' Nine Tails (1971).

As compositions of vastly different quality are interspersed amongst one another in dizzying array, many may find An Ennio Morricone Anthology virtually impossible to listen to from beginning to end without skipping tracks repeatedly. As a genius whose greatest compositions address both the immanent and the transcendent, both perdition and salvation, both the archaic and the modern, Morricone and his admirers deserve a more carefully selected and thoughtfully produced anthology than this haphazard collection offers.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful scores from Ennio Morricone.......1998-12-19

Few composers in film music today are as greatly admired as Ennio Morricone whose scores for a wide range of screen fares and many Oscar nominations and wins have attracted the attention of fans all over the world. This compilation is one of the best and contains very fine original musics and rare tracks of this Italian composer.

I dig His Playing can't say much really as far as His voice goes but His Foundation is very much on time too me.He is a Very Talented Player.you won't get the Minneapolis sound vibe here though.Dr.Fink comes out with something completely different here.

4 out of 5 stars The Doctor Is Ultra Cool !.......2002-08-31

Ultrasound is jampacked with intoxicating, if not highly energized, funk techno-grooves. Some tracks have a hint of new age Vangelis/Enigma elements in the mix but not enough to slow the party down or make it an elevator muzak affair. Many who rememebr Dr. Fink from his days with Prince and the Revolution as keyboardist will try to look for Prince's influence...Forget it ! This is strictly the Dr.'s project. In fact, the only track that will vaguely resemble anything close to Prince is the last track titled Almost Funky (should've been titled Almost Prince). Fink's own vocals on some tracks are strongly reminiscent of a young Boz Scaggs ! There is also a bit of the Paul Hardcastle sound and Trance Atlantic Air Waves (an Enigma side project) that can be heard. Still, the Doctor has produced an awesome sound and project all his own !

5 out of 5 stars Make an appointed with The Doctor!.......2002-04-30

Just how long have you been waiting to see the Doctor? Well it's been over 10 years since Matt 'Doctor' Fink left Prince's camp, having served as keyboardist in The Revolution and the NPG, but the wait is over. Ultrasound covers a wide spectrum of techno, technofunk and straight ahead R&B. Some tracks like "Ecstasy", "Cyber Monkey" and "Sonic Rave" stand out as great instrumental tracks ready to turn a club on its ear, whereas ballad's like "Night Flight" and Fink covering lead vocals on the title track and "Nobody Cried" (among others) all have their own unique flavor, but somehow fit perfectly together. Ultrasound, which houses a picture of Fink's first son Maxwell's ultrasound on the cover (headphones extra), is more than an impressive debut from an artist fans have long waited to hear from. Fink has worked production, writing, and even a long stint at K-Tel as special projects manager, but it's on Ultrasound that his writing, keyboard and yes singing talents really shine through. This album deserves more than a check-up. You need to be admitted for overnight listening! Check The Ernest Experience online for details about an upcoming interview w/ Dr. Fink.
