Boss boosters who paid an import premium five years back to own this supposedly never-to-be-released-in-America live set won't be thrilled to see its mid-price release. The large, post E-Street band is solid but predictable, though all this set does is remind listeners of the big mystery: Why doesn't Springsteen follow the lead of his brilliant Tunnel of Love album and find an interesting middle ground between his stadium heritage and today's dry Woody Guthrie routine? --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
Quite good.......2005-04-27
I grew up listening to Bruce's music, official and bootlegged, so much it's part of my DNA. I like Bruce, though not as feverently as my siblings. Reading what I've read, and hearing what I'm hearing for the first time, I think the Plugged cd is quite good. Older songs are refreshed, newer songs, dripping with energy. I know how good the E Street Band are, believe me, but this band he was playing with enabled Bruce to do something different, and perhaps to do something basically for himself. I think he succeeded in a big way. A chance to play with other people and reinterpret his catalog. Dylan does it all the time, and everyone knows about the history of comparison between those two. Regretfully the 'fans' couldn't accept the change.
MTV Plugged?.......2004-08-09
I'm a big fan of "The Boss", but for the life of me, can't fathom why he is unable to follow the lead of larger acts, and actually "unplug" for MTV Unplugged. This CD offers no new material that can't be found elsewhere, and is basically nothing more than a "live in concert" CD that just so happened to be filmed by MTV.
This concert took place in 1992, and you know it's pretty bad when you have bands ribbing you three years later about going on MTV UNPlugged, and then having to go and plug in. It's not like Bruce doesn't know how to play acoustic guitar, because he does. I'm a big acoustic guitar fan, and for someone of Bruce's talent level, to not be able to write songs that can be played acoustically only serves to bring down the level of respect I have for his talent.
Not what I would consider an essential recording, and not recommended, unless you are such a die-hard "Boss" fan that you have to own every album he puts out. Otherwise, save your money.
A nice little record.......2004-04-26
I can't help but wonder why MTV allowed Bruce Springsteen to play a regular electric "club date" instead of actually playing unplugged. There are hours of live Springsteen available, but only a few acoustic songs, and it would have been a lot more interesting to hear him recast some of his songs in an acoustic format.
On "MTV (Un)plugged", Springsteen opens with an acoustic solo performance, the dirty but good-natured "Red Headed Woman", after which he completely abandons the unplugged format, playing a regular (if slightly subdued) electric concert featuring mainly songs from his then-current albums "Human Touch" and "Lucky Town". And while it's a shame that he took the easy way and played a predictable electric set instead of an acoustic show, this is actually a really good little concert album.
This is from Springsteen's non-E Street Band period, but the most immediately recognizable part of his "sound", keyboardist Roy Bittan, is onboard, and the five-piece band plays well, although without a whole lot of personality.
The track list includes a couple of old war horses ("Thunder Road", "Atlantic City", "Darkness On The Edge Of Town"), but the vast majority of these thirteen songs are from the 90s, and Springsteen fortunately plays almost all the best songs from "Human Touch" and "Lucky Town", most of which actually sound better in this live setting than on the original studio recordings.
The pleasant trifle "Man's Job", which features harmony vocals by 70s soul crooner Bobby King, is really good, as is a slightly subdued by quite moving version of "I Wish I Were Blind".
"Human Touch" is better in the original rendition, but "Lucky Town" really benefits from the tough live arrangement and a great lead vocal by Springsteen. And the band lays down an extremely hard-rocking 8-minute version of "Light Of Day", a low-key Bob Dylan-like "Should I Fall Behind", and a nice, swinging "Better Days".
A folkish "Thunder Road" is disappointing compared to the definitive version on "Live 1975-1985", but "Atlantic City" and "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" in particular are good.
The final couple of songs are minor ones, but "MTV (Un)Plugged" generally holds up very well, and while it is not really a necessary purchase for casual Springsteen fans, it is a nice collection of small pleasures. I have had it since it came out, and I continue to play it now and then.
3 3/4 stars.
The guts to do it plugged.......2004-02-09
Yeah, Bruce Springsteen had the guts to do a very plugged show in the Unplugged series. As much as everybody wants to dismiss his non-E-street road band, the results are superb, the live HT/LT songs being much better than the studio ones. This CD has a haunting version of My Beautiful Reward, a beautiful song that wasn't done with a full heart on the HT album. Here, Bruce and the band get right into the very core of it. Other highlights: Red Headed Woman, Light Of Day, Thunder Road and Big Muddy. No, Big Muddy isn't here, it's on the Streets Of Philadelphia single along with Growin' Up. And I miss the other two songs: 57 Channels with a 'No justice, no peace' routine' and a hard-rockin' Glory Days. A two-CD set would be a right thing to do. The missing songs are on the video tape and DVD. And that's why this CD doesn't deserve 5 stars. Yep, (just) because they didn't include Big Muddy with that haunting shout 'poison snake bites you and you're poison too'.
Big dissapointment..........2002-12-11
I'm not a person who feeds upon nostalgy. I'm not an E-Street Band unconditional fan either. But, listening to this album, anyone can clearly conclude that these new band that Burce put togehter simply is not the right band for him.
Jesus, just compare it to the recent LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY and you'll be astonished by the difference in terms of passion, power and musical ability.
Anyway, Bruce had the courage to try something radically different, but it did not work out

eclectic collection of chanber music.......2007-05-12
the ahn trio rocks! along with the brodsky quartet, the kronos and other contemporary chamber groups, they combine a modish look with formidable classical technique that they use to assail a variety of melodies. some of the melodies are created specifically for them---so these young ladies are doing very well for themselves.
and they serve the music so well. each piece requires a different approach--evazen's 'diamond world' is sweet and lovely with a contemporary pop feel, piazzolla's tangos are spiky and rhythmic, for example--and they get it.
as much of a treat as this cd is, the real treat would be hearing these women live. i'm sure they turn it!
Excellent Music.......2004-10-02
The Ahn sisters have a lot of talent and that talen is shown in this CD. My personal favorite is their rendition of "The Heart Asks Pleasure First (from The Piano)". It is just beautiful!!
For me, the true test of music is how it makes me feel while I listen to it. When I listen to this CD, it makes me feel alive!!! It makes me hunger to listen to other CDs that the Ahn Trio have made. I'll be picking those up soon.
Ahnbelievable!.......2002-12-18
These sisters cook with classical ingredients and have found in Kenji Bunch a composer who understands their dynamic and presents them with material that encourages them to expand their considerable talents. There is an attitude here that came off as a bit unbridled on the first CD, TRIOS, and may have set them against the mainstream of classical interpreters. That's a very good thing indeed, for having broken that stranglehold on how things should be played, they have managed to add a bit of steam to the chamber room. Sure it has to do with fashion and sensuality, but it did back in the day, when Wolfgang, Ludwig and Robert and Clara were heating things up. It all got too mannered afterwards, so when artists like the Ahns, or Kennedy, or any other adventurous soul upends the conventions, it is easy to jump on the surface differences as a way of avoiding dealing with the substantive issues at hand.
To my ears, they provoke the listener in what seemed like too comfortable assumptions about Piazzola, infused interest and intrigue into Bernstein where little besides Broadway and Americana star excess existed before, and have taken a Pat Metheny/David Bowie piece and brought classical drama to a terrific composition. Both writers should be duly flattered and impressed by the interpretation. And as I mentioned, with Bunch, they have a writer best suited to their own dynamic.
I am sure it helps that a set of twins are playing with their sister. There is a telepathy here that indicates they know when they are going to leap off the conventional cliff, and so the others respond by catching them in mid air. This disc makes for seductive and exciting listening. Listening to the Bosendorfer ring off the sensuality of the cello and the passion of the violin and that unbridled element is a source of wonder and enchantment.
These gals just wanna have fun..........2002-07-11
I do hope the cover of this CD doesn't scare away "serious" classical lovers! This is definitely classical. It's a collection of shorter classics, but that sure doesn't mean it's aimed for those with short attention spans like one reviewer suggests. This music is, to quote, "charged and alive"! A lot of "today people" who are leery about classical music are likely to find themselves wound up in music especially composed for the Ahn trio by such composers as Henji Bunch and Eric Emazan. Diverse composers such as Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla and Leonard Bernstein are included, and most diverse of all, perhaps, is David Bowie.
These gals touch all the basses and show that there is indeed life in classical music.
AWESOME!.......2002-05-12
The Ahn Trio was here in small-town, Bremerton, WA. this evening, and I was fortunate enough to see in concert and talk with them after their fabulous show. Their musical performance is stunning, and their presences on stage is awesome--they bring the audience to them...they are free with talking with the audience. If ever you get the chance to see them, it is definitely worth it.

A Phenomenon.......2007-05-23
Dave Weckl is a phenomenon, period. He is not only a virtuoso drummer of such a high level as to only come around a few times in a century, anywhere in the world, but he is an incredible musician far beyond his drumming skills. Anyone who has ever played on the same stage as Mr. Weckl can testify that he, in many or most cases makes the music happen. Weckl's music may not be very interesting to musicians who desire a wider scope of expression and musical culture, and his bands are not up to his level of expression and virtuosity, but he, himself commands the music and his instrument in a way rarely found in any field of music.
When Mr. Weckl plays with Chick Corea the process and result is synergistic not unlike the pairings of other historically great musicians. Listeners many times wish to form ideal groups of musicians - perhaps if Weckl performed with those who were the progenitors of the genre he prefers, his level of demonstrated artistry would be more carefully considered. In short, critically speaking Weckl should be playing with Mclaughlin, Zawinul, continue to cultivate with Corea and for that matter, those playing acoustic instruments but not of the rebop styles, rather, progressive musicians. Audiences would be completely astounded.
And by the way, Weckl swings. For those who don't know his history and haven't heard him play in the manner you expect, then his swinging playing has not be heard. Mr. Weckl is one of the few jazz drummers who has had the artistic prowess and intelligence necessary to develop a personality and no-nonsense way of expression - something that can rarely be said about most jazz drummers, technically and conceptually.
No musician is everything to everyone. Mr. Weckl is true to himself, though agreeably this writer also feels he should be truer to his higher self and play music of greater depth and maturity. In the meantime, we enjoy one of the true phenomenal musicians of our age.
Pleasing.........2006-11-09
this Cd was astounding. Dave Weckl by far is one of the greatest drummers of our time and this cd is a true testament to the statement. You will enjoy. Buy it now.!
BUDDY WOULD BE IMPRESSED!.......2006-07-20
It always angers me the amount of criticism Dave Weckl has had to endure throughout his long and distinguished career in music. Admittedly, this has come from those who are simply not qualified enough to offer any opinion! It is more a case of "sour grapes" - because, those who criticize are simply jealous of the man's obvious talent. Shame on them!
I have always loved his playing. As a drummer myself, I feel more able to appreciate his sheer genius and command of the kit - even more than non-drummers perhaps. In some ways he reminds me of Buddy Rich. They both shared a passion for drumming and dedicated their lives to stretching the instrument to its full. Of course, Buddy is gone now, but I feel his spirit lives on today in many drummers - Weckl especially.
I had never heard "The Dave Weckl Band" till I bought this double cd live set. And what an introduction! He seems to be playing more relaxed than before. His overall feel and groove are also a little more laid back. Of course, he can still play the entire "Weckl drum licks" catalogue with ease, but on this recording he plays totally differently than you might expect. More accessible a style I would say. He also has fun interacting with his band. You can just feel that he has arrived on a new plateau of musical expression.
All in all, a great recording. It really does show Dave Weckl in a new light. A fantastic achievement. Great stuff Dave!

stop the hating.......2006-04-18
I grew up in St. Louis, and have seen Dave Weckl (one of my drumming idols) play several times on good nights and on bad nights(in Lawrence Kansas after he and Mike Stern's band had to drive during the day from St. Louis). In general, I don't really like any of his solo albums(ok, maybe some of the tunes on Master Plan(especially with the bad-ass Kennedy brothers). My favorite album with Dave Weckl playing is either Steve Khan's 'Public Access' or Chick Corea's 'Eye of the Beholder', and I preferred the way he was playing before he felt the necessity for studying drums with that Freddy Grueber guy...but I digress.....I guess I'm just tired of people saying that Dave Weckl 'has no soul', or that he 'cannot groove'. For some reason in the past 15 years it has become commonplace, even fashionable, to express disgust with the way he plays (I just love when people say he sucks because he's just a Steve Gadd rip off, I wish I had a fraction of that kind of suckiness). Just imagine how silly it would sound for somebody to be critical of Elvin Jones because of 'sloppy technique', a statement like that is just as silly as most of the criticism I've heard about Mr. Weckl in the past several years. Granted, some of the music might be lame (that's my opinion), but let's not attack his playing because that is such a tired and illogical argument. I prefer to hear him play as a sideman, I wish he would have gotten together with Al DiMeola or John McLaughlin...I guess there's hope for the future..
Amazing!.......2004-12-28
Whether you're new to the Dave Weckyl Band or not, you'll definately appreciate this album. It gives that good live sound and every instrument comes out clear and crisp. The talent that these guys posses is unbelievable. And you'll just love the bass and drum thing called 'Rhythm-A-Ning'.
Quit b.s.ing and go buy it!

Forever, Ever Land.......2001-03-27
Phil has done it again! Just when you thought he couldn't get any better, he has. A fun, innovative and thoughtful album, Plugged In will smoke up your CD player with Phil's distinctive vocals and out-of this world, world-class trumpet playing.
An upbeat, bluesy-contemporary offering that will get your toes tapping and get you to sing along inspite of yourself. Phil's cover of "My Father's Eyes" offers a swaying calypso-esqe guitar that and a soulful vocal that should make Eric Clapton sit up and take notice.
Phil fans, take notice--this one's breaking new ground, and having a lot of fun doing it.
GO PHIL GO!.......2000-12-29
I own 7 of Phil's CDs and the collection is growing! I've grown up listening to him and I will continue to have him as an influence on my own music! Plugged In is one of the best CDs he has ever created! But, with Phil it's always: "Stay Tuned... there's more fun ahead!"
Fantastic.......2000-09-29
I enjoyed this CD so much! I have actually learned most of the songs singing on my way to work. Such a variety of songs of praise an glorifying God. This is my first CD with Phil and I will never turn back, he's the best musician/singer in his arena!
Forever BABY.......2000-04-14
Phil Driscoll is a classic. He is one of the Christian artists that is actually a good musician. This a great funky bluesy set of tunes.

Ronnie is always best live.......2002-10-09
Although there is a studio CD Slide On This, I'd recommend the live disc....not all the same songs either. Ronnie keeps living his rock and roll life and as much as he is driven, he does a better job solo than Keith ever could....on this one he uses Bernard Fowler and Ian McLagan from the Stones machine. There are 7 of his own songs, one from Dylan, 2 that he wrote with Rod Stewart (Gasoline Alley & Stay With Me) and his Stones song Pretty Beat Up (which the Stones did even though they labeled the studio tapes "dog s____")....the tracks are from his 92-93 tour at the Ritz in NY, Avalon in Boston and at Budokan in Japan.....a great dose of Ronnie's guitar, lyrics, and slide, slide, slide.....and he even ends with a dose of his Faces days....finishes with a very nice version of Stay With Me.
Ronnie Wood keeps getting better.......2002-02-16
One would think guys like Ron Wood would slow down or take it easy, but Woody shows he's as into his music as he ever was. This is typical Wood, catchy, rocking, sly and FUN. I've seen Wood live probably a dozen times since 1975, with and without the Stones...this is why I keep going back. If you like Faces/Stewart/Stones 70s jamming rock, this is a great example of it.
Live & addictive, an album to own!.......1999-10-17
All the classic songs that Ron Wood made famous with his old band mate ROD STEWART...performed live second to none. Bernard Fowler's voice is something else (Background vocalist for the STONES)..This album is as close to being at a live gig as there is. Its an addictive record that will always be in my CD multi changer...and should be in yours!

straight company rocks!.......2000-07-21
THis is some of the best music that I have ever heard. This album contains a mix of instrumental and a cappella music so it can be found appealing by everyone. I have been following straight company for years and I am continually blown away at the things that they do in their ministry. Their lyrics reach right down into your soul and make you feel the presence of God. I would recommend this album to anyone and everyone! I can't wait until this fall when their new album comes out.

"Served Acoustic" marks the very first ever tribute to one of the 80's sleaziest bands, Warrant.
"Served Acoustic" features 10 tracks re-imagined in an un-plugged style format, though staying 100% rocking unlike the slew of punk and electronic based albums that have been paying homage to our 80's hero's.
Aerists include: America to Mars (featuring ex-Tuff Luck guitarist Dave Scott), underground favorites Carch 22, northeast glam/tribute favorites Bad Hair Day, acclaimed Chicago rockers Joy Focus and others.

Customer Reviews:
Anvil - 'Plugged In Permanent' (Metal Blade).......2005-01-28
'Plugged...' is only like the second, maybe third title of Avnil's catalog I've ever had. This is the Canadian band's 9th album as I didn't realize they've been at it since 1981.Best described as 'aggressive thrash metal'.Tracks that make this disc a keeper are "Racial Hostility",the ass-kicking "Destined For Doom"(possibly the CD's best cut),"Face Pull" and "Five Knuckle Shuffle".Line-up is Steve 'Lips' Kudlow-guitar&vocals,Ivan Hurd-guitar,Glen Five-bass and Robb Reiner-drums.Should appeal to fans of Slayer,Exodus,Metal Church and Forbidden.
how you shape metal.......2000-08-02
an anvil is how you shape metal pieces. anvil does just that. they shape their metal and it sounds good
past glory.......2000-04-29
For a really great speed metal album try to get Anvil's "METAL ON METAL". THAT is the real classic.I swear it to you. I would not lie.
appropriate name for the band........1999-12-04
this band has a very appropriate name, mainly because its music hits your eardrums with the impact of an anvil.
$6.oo wast.......1999-08-12
i got this cd at a used cd store for six $$, and it is not worth that. it is a hunk of shit. this is for the fans of man o war, blind guarian, and other junk like that. but to a metal fan with true tast and is looking for something more 0riginal u should move by this right now. The band may have some skill but thay do not show it.i mean that the first song is the only kinda creative one. smooking green, killer hill, face pull, come on people i like metal blade but this is a joke. sorry
