This is the only Howard Jones album you'll ever need. HoJo was a founder of early '80s synth-pop, which was as easy to sing to as it was to dance to. The rhythms on this record pop like new wave corn kernels in heated oil, tempered by Jones's high-strung vocals extending over the top. Jones makes good use of the bright synth piano patches available during that time, especially during "Things Can Only Get Better." "No One Is to Blame" is a solid ballad, just Jones and his keyboard. It's heartfelt and regretful--a little cheesy, but in a good way. --Beth Bessmer

I particularly like "Best of..." collections because you avoid a lot of the filler songs that you usually didn't know to begin with and just get the favorites that made up the soundtrack of your life at certain periods. "The Best of Howard Jones" is exactly that for those of us who grew up listening to pop and new wave in the 80's, plus some great newer songs I wasn't as familiar with. Howard Jones was such a presence on the radio (at least in my city) that I'm amazed at how many people I talk to who don't recognize his name now (although they usually recognize the songs). With his "synth-pop" style and keyboards, he captured the sound of the time perfectly (like Depeche Mode, Yaz, Thompson Twins, or Simple Minds) but with a generally more upbeat and positive mood to his music. His lyrics also seemed more thoughtful instead of just catchy. I especially like "What is Love?" and "Things Can Only Get Better" in the synth style and "No One Is To Blame" for his mellow keyboard sound. I was also impressed with some of the more mature songs at the end, "Lift Me Up," "Tears to Tell," and "Two Souls," and I especially loved "I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)," all songs I wasn't familiar with. Overall, probably one of the best collections of the best of the 80s music, and one that brings back good memories.

Best Of Hojo.......2006-11-10

A good representation of Jones' best work. It's good to have the tunes with his signature sound all in one place, but there are some unspectacular selections here. His cover of Fagen's IGY is a pleasant surprise for those of us who are diehard fans of Donald and The Dan.

Howard Hewett has always been one of my favorite artists. He was clearly the "voice" when he was with the group Shalamar. This CD contains the best of his voice while with that group, as well as those songs he recorded when he went solo. Pure Howard!

If the initials of Howard Hewett were HAT it would clearly stand for "Hidden American Treasure" which he is.I have followed the career of HH since the days of Shalamar and I find
HH to be one of the Top Ten artist in current times. The unique and gifted appeal of HH is his ability to sing as a complete group, his range is expansive. Moreover he sings from his soul with a depth that resonates back to his own soul producing a sound that the hearer never forgets. C.E. in CHI Town.....

My Favorite Balladeer of All Time.......2005-05-12

I have been following Howard and a fan of whatever he has brought to album or CD since his arrival on the music scene with Shalamar on the album Big Fun. Just as the other reviewers stated, double H is one of the most underrated male soul singers of all time. I would have loved for them to add Your Body Needs Healing to this compilation from his CD It's Time or a cut he done with the Rippingtons called Heaven. So much for the nitpicking for one thing about it, compilations will never have everything everyone wants. With that in mind, it was nice to see that the alluring song Somewhere There's A Love (Just for Me) from Shalamar's Three for Love album, one of the most overlooked ballads ever. The problem with the song was that it was on the same album as the all-time classic This Is For the Lover in You. One thing all buyers of the CD should do is read the liner notes to get an insight into what made HH who he was. Some of the interesting information from the liner notes include HH and his sisters in a gospel choir whose chief rivals was another group from Ohio led by James Ingram, whose brother Phillip, sang with Switch (I Call Your Name, There'll Never Be) and led their song I Wanna Be Closer. I am so much a fan of HH that with all of the albums I bought back in the day and have made a total switch to CD, I still have all my Shalamar albums with HH singing with the group. By the way, he did release a live compilation album recently called Intimate. Voices like HH comes once in a lifetime and I am glad I am old enough to know good music. With all of this said, GO GET THE CD!!!!

i am listening to this cd right now. i bought this cd because i wanted the duet with gerald levert. but this woman can blow. i am disappointed that she doesnt have as many projects as she should. what a loss to those of us who really like SINGERS and not these fly by night artist of this century. in my opinion she is of the caliper of gladys knight, aretha franklin and nancy wilson if given the opportunity she and her music will stand the test of time.
she is a mellow seductive voice that i never tire of listening to

Relive the 80s with Mikki.......2007-01-26

If you are a fan of the 80s or R&B Soul, you will love this CD. I would put Mikki Howard in the same style of Stephanie Mills, Shirley Murdock, or Regina Belle. Mikki may not have reached mainstream status, but "Come Share My Love," "Love Under New Management," "Baby Be Mine," the duet with late Gerald Levert "That's What Love Is," "Love Under New Management," and the Aretha Franklin remake "Until You Come Back to Me" are all HITS. This CD made me relive my childhood, and I didn't even know Mikki recorded all of those songs I knew. I highly recommend buying this CD to add to your collection.

WHO PUT THIS COMPILATION TOGETHER?.......2004-07-20

Clearly not a REAL George Howard fan. How could you leave out "Love Will Conquer All", "September Rain" , "Slow Walking" , "Jade's World", "Sweetest Taboo" , or "Stanley's Groove" ? Hey,the list goes on.

Love Will Follow is probably his best CD and only one song from that album made it on the compilation. Where's the justice?

Whoever said this was the best CD, CLEARLY is not a George Howard fan, has not listened to any of his CD's, or probably only owns this CD.

The Very Best Of George Howard ( And Then Some).......2004-05-16

This is the best of all of George Howard's recordings. This cd is awesome and will get you and your mate in the mood everytime. Or if you had a bad day and need to unwind this is the cd for you. It's one of the best I have in my collection of music.

Great spectrum of songs to sample.......2003-03-26

If you lost out on George Howard's other cds because they are no longer in print, hurry and grab this sampler. Clearly George Howard is one of the most accomplished musicians in the jazz world. Definitely one of the forerunners to the "smooth jazz" sound, this artist played with the likes of Gamble & Huff and Dexter Wansel in Philly, then went on to play with Grover Washington Jr. (just to name a few) before striking out in his own right. The list of musicians that he has colaborated with over the years would take too long to list here. The biggest regret is that he is no longer here with us to continue his artistry. While sadly missed, be sure that you don't miss out on this experience before all of his cd's are gone.

Not the Best.......2000-08-04

If the best music piece of his "Love Will Conquer All" is not included, this album cannot be considered as the best. But, fortunately, this album includes Midnight Mood and a new piece, "Find Your Way," in which George Howard's part is relatively small: the female vocalist dominates this music piece. And "Let's Unwin" from Attitude Adjustment is not included, either.

A great CD for those who appreciate movie themes.......2000-10-06

I enjoyed this CD because Leonard Martin does a good job in selecting the scores of movies that are special in itself, outside from the context of the movie. His selection is diverse, in the sense that it includes scores of not only the big blockbusters of the 90s (Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart), but also of the movies that have already been forgotten (Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, and The Rainmaker). There is reasoning behind such a selection, according to Martin: "Some scores wear well over time and provide a rewarding experience long after the movie begins to recede in one's memory."

Martin selects the scores from a variety of film genres (drama, dark comedy, suspense,for example) which translates into a well rounded compilation of musical pieces (classical,spanish-inspired, blues, etc). He also includes liner notes reagrding each selection and composer, which serves as a brief, yet interesting, background regarding each selection.

The only qualm that I have with the CD is the abscence of some of my personal favorites, which are certainly memorable both as films and as scores. Reagarding such statements Martin states that "Lists, of course, are highly arbitrary and designed to provoke argument." Moreover, Martin acknowledges that selections are not the only great scores of the past decade; they are, however, among his favorites. I definitely agree with him on this statement.
