5 out of 5 stars Excellence!.......2007-04-22

These recordings range back to 1994, with a number of tracks being from Silva Screen's "Music from the Films of Clint Eatwood" compilation, with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic.

Those tracks are: "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", "A Fistful of DOllars", "For a Few Dollars More", and "Two Mules for Sister Sara". "In The Line Of Fire' also appeared on that CD, performed electronically by Mark Ayres.

The next bunch of tracks is from Silva Screen's 1996 compilation, "Cinema Paradise: The Classic Film Music of Ennio Morricone", which included the majority of tracks here such as the extensive The Mission Suite, The Untouchables, Casulaties of War, Once Upon a Time In America, 1900, Chi Mai, Marco Polo, Once Upon a Time In The West (two tracks), Cinema Paradise, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly - Ecstacy of Gold, mostly being conducted by Paul Bateman, with Nic Raine doing some of the conducting duties as well.

Hamlet is from Silva's 1997 "Cinema's Classic Romances" compilation, while "The Thing" is from Silva's 2001 "Essential John Carpenter".

A Fistful of Dynamite - Duck You Sucker is from 2002's Way Out West: Essential Western Film Music Collection Volume Two.

The remaing tracks were newly recorded in 2004 for this release:
Days of Heaven, Exorcist II, Guns for San Sebastian, Moses the Lawgiver, My Name is Nobody, The Five Man Army, The Red Tent, The Men From Shiloh and The Sicilian Clan.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "his domain of film scoring is legendary ~ Ennio Morricone".......2004-10-07

Silva America once again has outdone themselves with "Once Upon A Time:The Essential Ennio Morricone Film Music Collection", a double disc collection worth their weight in GOLD! ~ Morricone creates visual moods for each film he scores...action, adventure, mystery, romance, sentimental and suspense...the list could go on.

Ennio Morricone was born in Rome on October 11, 1928...attended the Santa Cecilia Conservatory...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s, then the WESTERNS and his name became a household word in the film industry ~ a new kind of western was on the horizon and Morricone was commissioned to score "A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS" [1964] for Sergio Leone featuring Clint Eastwood, spaghetti westerns were born ~ next "FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE" [1965] ~ and a bigger budget film "THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY" [1966], again featuring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and a third Eli Wallach whose performance was magical to watch on the big screen ~ violence and revenge gives Morricone an opportunity to feature electric guitars, flutes and jew's harp blending with a non lyrical chorus mixed with brass, strings, percussion with full orchestration that simply took your breath away...example is "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" [1968], featuring Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards and our hero Charles Bronson the mysterious harmonica player, director Sergio Leone's tribute to the American Western, pulled out all the stops ~ the Western was just a small part of Maestro Morricone's career, in the next paragraph take a gander of just what our icon of film music accomplished.

Our composer didn't stop there as "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA" [1984], featuring Robert De Niro, James Woods and Elizabeth McGovern, another Sergio Leone film..."THE MISSION" [1986], featuring Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons and Aldan Quinn, is probably one of Morricone's crowning scores receiving an Academy Award nomination, very haunting and classical genre in substance..."THE UNTOUCHABLES" [1987], featuring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro during the Al Capone '30s crime organization, Morricone conjures a powerful and dynamic arrangement of his unmistakable theme..."CINEMA PARADISO" [1988], featuring Phillippe Noiret, Antonella Attili and Pupella Maggio from director Giuseppe Tomatore as he recalls his early childhood, the score immediately captures your heart, so tender and compelling as Morricone can only deliver.

City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra featuring conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine, Derek Wadsworth ~ Crouch End Festival Chorus featuring Choir Master David Temple ~ vocals performed by Charlotte Kinder, Marie Kopecka and Jill Washington ~ guitar, percussion and keyboards performed by Gareth Williams ~ all in all did a magnicent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for over 250 films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which was long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand, scoring as many as over a half dozen films as year.

This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Morricone's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is James Fitzpatrick [producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars Vocal Brilliance.......2004-04-07

This has a very similar track listing to Take A Dip. There are about 5 different tracks on here to Take A Dip. This is a slightly superior album. Producers include Babyface, Daryl Simmons, Tony Rich and Chris "Tricky" Stewart amongst others. This may be generic R&B in a similar vein to Boyz II Men, Az Yet and Bobby Brown. But with the quality of songs and their amazing vocal talents it rises above the pack. This album was a commercial flop, so bewildered by this LaFace records got Dallas Austin in to produce a few tracks, dropped some tracks from this album and retitled the album Take A Dip and re-released it. Take A Dip also flopped and they lost their recording contract never to be seen from again. With their immense talents I can't understand why none of them got a solo recording contract. Although Demail did pop up on The Braxtons (Toni's sister's)"So Many Ways" album.

4 out of 5 stars Staying True to Great R&B.......2007-05-07

This album is another prime example of how R&B evolved and produced melodic songs in the mid 90's. It follows the style and arrangements of Men of Vizion, Boyz II Men, Az Yet....etc, but with a slight twist. Babyface endorsed this group (along with Daryl Simmons, Dallas Austin, Tony Rich, etc.) and even composed a few songs such as "Young Girl" -- I can't help but feel the smoothness and harmony that is incorporated in even the faster tunes (Tonite, All My Love). "Have I Never" is mine, and many others, favourite song on this CD, because it really portrays a touching story of how a man loves a lady, but doesn't understand why she doesn't think he does, so he asks her "Have I Never", told you I love you. I do think that this era is by far, the most artistic, and most songs were much better produced than those of today. This CD (and many others from this time) concentrates more on vocals, whereas modern groups rely more on synthisized beats. I dont' recommend all the songs, but most are well written and worth listening to, even if you haven't heard this group before. If you are an avid 90's R&B fan, this compilation will induce nostalgia and there isn't anything better than reliving the good ol' days!

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate.......2004-02-07

Without a doubt these guys are some of the best R&B artists i have ever heard. Where did they go? Why did they never release another album?

If I could, I would give it 6 stars out of 5. This CD ROCKS!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Take A Dip With A Few Good Men.......2003-12-07

The LaFace vocal quartet, A Few Good Men, first made hype on LaFace Family Christmas in 1993, followed by their first try of success, Thang for You, released in 1994. Though, it wasn't until in 1995 the foursome caught the public eye with, Take a Dip. L.A. Reid, Daryl Simmons, Tony Rich, Dallas Austin, and Babyface's Urban/Club/Dance ready production helped Take a Dip on a respected dive to No. 53 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, while the singles "Have I Never" hit the top-40 and "Tonite" just a few spots shy of a top-40 hit. Today, A Few Good Men are virtually forgotten, last appearing on 1997's "Have I Never [Remix]" performed by the 69 Boyz and produced by Babyface and Daryl Simmons for the And Then There Was Bass: Dis Bass Game Real anthology. Take a Dip has enough enjoyable material to satisy the bittest mainstream listeners, not to mention fans of sweet harmonies.

5 out of 5 stars The 2003 Most slept on groups of the 90's.......2003-05-09

All I kbow is that these young men had the talent, the look & the sound to go far in this industry. I was only 14 when i first turned to BET and saw the harmonic voices of the 4 men of "A few Good Men".

The first single: A little something, was a force on Video vibrations. All i have to say is if you are an R&B fan, your collection will be incomplete without this disk.

5 out of 5 stars Boyz II Men with a Personality.......2002-06-07

Why and how this record slipped through the cracks is beyond me, but this is one of the finer modern r&b releases of the 1990s. Dallas Austin and Baybyface produced a handful of the tracks here. The best of which are "Have I Never," the dynamite ballad "Young Girl," and "Walk You Through." These bruthas can sing with more soul and grit than any of the dudes in Boyz II Men. Yet, their CD went past the radar screen and the group never got the recognition they richly deserved. Give it a chance, and you will not be disappointed.

Amazon doesn't carry this, but you can find it on Half.com and EBAY or do a Google search for it, they are out there! "A Few Good Men" is one of the best Christian CD's ever produced. This is usually not my type of music, but my brother played it and I absolutely love it. I normally like Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman, Point of Grace and Avalon type of Christian music. Broaden your music horizons and take a minute to locate one of these CD's and then... BUY IT! You will not regret it. Guaranteed!

    5 out of 5 stars Modern Celtic.......2006-08-07

Beth Pattersons music is excellent. Her mix of cajun and celtic styles (I am a huge Celtic Music fan), is awesome. Her writing style and musical talent complement each other very well. It is like listening to an ancient Celt write music from their experiences today. I couldn't be happier. Hope to see her in concert some day. It's a long drive to where she performs but I just might get on my bike and go!!

5 out of 5 stars Even better live.......2006-04-23

I'll admit to some bias, since I am a friend of Beth's, but if she really sucked I wouldn't bother writing any review at all. Or dragging friends to her gigs whenever she's in my neck of the woods. Or catching her at pubs when I'm in New Orleans. Beth's an extremely talented musician with a great sense of humor, and both tend to come out best when she's in front of an audience. Sure, her studio work is damn good, but live is even better, so I'm quite happy she finally did a live album. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy.
