A Distant Call represents Susan Ashton's most polished work to date, and it's no wonder, considering the 1996 release was produced by three of the best in the business--Wayne Kirkpatrick, Brown Bannister, and Michael Omartian. The rolling melodies in "You Move Me" and "Body and Soul" provide a lush soundscape for Ashton's magnificent vocals. She can growl in the gritty rocker "Crooked Man" or serenade you with the lullaby-like "Spinning Like a Wheel." And for good measure, Ashton goes country in "Love Profound," which features the expert strings of Alison Krauss. The song selection for this release may not be as strong as Ashton's self-titled 1993 gem, but it's still better than most. --Michael Lyttle --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

This is an excellent CD. The music, both voices and orchestra, is superb. The content of the lyrics is inspiring. It reminds me of so many reasons I'm proud to be American.

Surprised that no one has reviewed this yet. Amazon.com doesn't give much info on this release, so I thought I'd rectify that. This is the second brand-new release on the "Mormon Tabernacle Choir" label, following their April 2003 release of "Consider the Lilies." Again, several of the arrangements are by Mack Wilberg, with direction by Craig Jessop and accompianment by the Orchestra at Temple Square. The track list is as follows:

The sound on this release is, if anything, even cleaner than the previous release, with the Choir and orchestra very evenly balanced. The programming includes a mix of both traditional and brand new songs, a couple of which (Stephen Paulus's "Hymn For America," and Charles Osgood's "The Pledge of Allegiance") were commissioned especially for this recording. Additional note: several of these songs were included on the Choir's 2003 Northeastern States tour, which was a huge success. I highly recommend this recording!

5 out of 5 stars An Obscure CD if there ever was one........2006-07-17

Accidentally stumbled upon this CD while looking for something else.I was intrigued by the idea of 2 piano versions of the Milhaud and Ibert. So I snapped it up at a moderately steep price, because I like the orchestral versions and Koch engineers have always made brilliant recordings in the past.
Well once again Koch sound is superb. Crisp and clear with just the right resonant ambience. Which is saying plenty as this is a Live 1992 recording from a Brussels auditorium.
The Andranian sisters play this music for all it's worth without a single audible glitch or dynamic mis-step.
The Milhaud and Ibert pieces go a long way to helping to understand the orchestral version. The melodies and transitions are stripped down to the two pianos and 50+ other instruments do not clutter up the sound.
if you like Le Boeuf and Escales you will love them for 2 pianos.
The real surprise here is Jolivet's Hopi Snake Dance. It is the most "modern" of the rest and was written from a picture on a postcard of Hopi Indians caught in still-life doing The Hopi Snake dance (duh!) that Edgar Varese sent him from America. Now that's what I call an inspired creative mind.
While I don't know if that's what a Hopi Dance sounds like, it certainly is music that might make you stand up a "shake". very well done and will hold your interest thoroughly for the 8 minutes.
The Francaix is his typical "Joi de Vivre". Light and totally upbeat.
This was a great find and a lifetime keeper in my collection.
Recommended for everything on it.

5 out of 5 stars Time Tested.......2006-12-11

To me, great music is great music, regardless of genre. Songs you hear 20 years later still sound as good as the first time you heard them - and every song on this album falls into that category. The songs are written by several talented tunesmiths, including Michael W Smith and Sheryl Crow. "Lonely River" is the best track to me, but I once drove from Maine to Maryland and back (1200 miles) and this was the only CD I played for the entire trip (despite having 30 or so in my CD case). The true test is that every single person who has ridden with me while this CD was playing has asked who it was, and has subsequently bought the album (to my knowledge). I just wish Susan could have followed it up with something as good - maybe this is her magnum opus.

5 out of 5 stars A great album - never gets old.......2006-10-24

Susan has a unique, strong voice that draws you in. I've had this album for around 10 years and the music is still fresh. I hope that Susan records more music - she has a freshness and different sound that is much appreciated.

4 out of 5 stars I could've met her, but she's good.......2005-06-21

I bought this one when I was in college. I've got the privilege to see Susan Ashton in concert. I didn't get to meet her, yet she signed autographs for me. It's a shame that she's not making any new music right now.

5 out of 5 stars Susan's Best Ever Album!!!!.......2005-04-03

I wish she would do another one like this album. It was fantastic and I play it all the time!! I love this album!

5 out of 5 stars 'I'm Lost in a Whirlwind...'.......2004-09-18

'...so this is how it feels, spinning like a wheel'-words from Spinning Like a Wheel written by Susan Ashton and Wayne Kirkpatrick.

I still love this recording. When I first began to listen to christian radio, they played You Move Me and Blind Side over and over again. The radio station went under several years ago, but I still listen to this cassette even though it's 8 years old! I like it better than Vol. 1 of the best of Susan Ashton. She sings two songs written by Sheryl Crow, All Kinds of People and Hundreds of Tears which is one of my many favorites on this cd. Amy Grant helped write Send a Message, another favorite. My absolute favorite song is Lonely River, an extended metaphor comparing characteristics of a winding river to the journey God sets before us in our journey to our ultimate ending to our home in heaven with God. Wayne Kirkpatrick and Michael W. Smith wrote those lyrics: 'Lonely river, is there a place your running to, or is it something that you're running from? Is it hope that keeps you going, is it faith that makes you strong? Lonely river, lonely river, running on...' It's a beautiful song. It ends with: 'Lonely river, I think I am a lot like you, winding on in hopes to find the sea...drifting towards our destinies, the arm of God is long. And I believe that through this journey 'til we're finally home, lonely river, we will never run alone.'

Joshua 1:9 for the Lord thy G_d is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Matthew 28:10 lo, I am with you alway, EVEN unto the end of the world. Amen
