The following quote is a good way to introduce this album; it is from the poem "The Singer" by Eva A. Jessye. "Because of ebon skin and humble pride,The world with hatred thrust the youth aside.....And through our grief we rise to nobler things....A well of sweetness there unbidden springs." This disc portrays the talents of two wonderful musicians: Moses Hogan,excellent pianist, creator of exciting arrangements of spirituals both for solo voice and choirs AND that countertenor
Derek Ragin with his truly lovely voice capable of great vocal technique and versatility. He has appeared in several operas; two with Michael Chance that are wondrous to listen to: Tamerlano and Agippina. Spiritual are not my favorite thing, but there are some ear-catching beauties on this one;namely:"Ole Time Religion" and "Give Me Jesus". Some others are: 'Steal Away'-'Little David Play on your Harp'-'This Little Light of Mine' and many more. Some are a cappela, some accompanied by the piano, and some by piano with choir back-up. You do not have to be a lover of spirituals to enjoy this disc. But if you are, you will be in heaven!!!!!!
I Feel the Spirit Too.......2006-08-17
Very beautiful voice, sometimes I forget that the soloist voice is that of a male singer. Would like to hear more of Moses Hogan on keyboard and his arrangements.

Although I do not like spirituals too much, it is a must listening to this fantastic countertenor singing with Moses Hogan. For me, Derek Lee Ragin has such a brilliant voice, I never heard before in my life.
Saw the Moses Hogan chorale live in NYC and loved them!.......1998-10-16
Truly great spirituals, truly brilliant arrangements by Moses Hogan. I can't wait to collect all his CDs.

CAN'T NOBODY DO ME LIKE JESUS!!! .......2004-10-04
This revamp of the church classic is hot!! Actually, I love the whole album. Excellent songs, great production (JDI Records continues to IMPRESS!!!), awesome soloists (Denetria Champ is incredible). I had a chance to meet Minister Britton at the GMWA convention in KC and I was most impressed by his humble spirit - you'd never know from meeting him that he has one of the most popular songs on the radio and that all the church choirs are singing. I understand that Micha Stampley started out in Timothy's choir and has a solo project coming out soon - can't wait. If you like great gospel music, you'll love this one. Can't NOBODY do me like Jesus

Jazzy steel guitar - 4th of series.......2000-09-09
Aubrey Ghent's album is the fourth in the very successful sacred steel guitars series. Ghent is the most jazzy of the musicians recorded in this series, a fact emphasized in this recording with keyboards and drums. Most of the hymns are given comparatively slow, laid-back approaches which emphasized Ghent's ability to make the steel guitar sing.
If you liked Ghent on the anthologies (first and fifth recordings in the series) you will love this.

I thoroughly enjoyed the cd and would readily recommend to friends of mine that's talented in singing, playing the guitar and piano.

I realy enjoyed this cd. It kinda took me back in the day. Although, I wasnt born during the time of the Negro Spirtituals, my spirit naturally gravitates to the calls of my ancestors. Jeanette Thompson brings a strong energy to the songs on the cd. If you like the Negro Spirituals from back in the day, you will enjoy this cd. If you like the sound of a Soprano, that will be a bonus. Sit back, relax and let your Soul remind you of just how far we have come, since the enslavement of a Afrikan people. Our Faith Is Unshakeable!!!We Are Here To Stay!!

Good Cd, after a few listens.......1999-07-31
I was excited about this cd, since I had their first one. I'll have to admit, I was disappointed at first, but I have grown to really like this project. While I can't say that every song is a great song, there are a couple of gems, and the rest are solid efforts. It seems that Nu City Mass is at it's best when they are just doing down-home, church songs. I do like "Souled Out", alot, though. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone, just give it a few listens before you pass judgement.

I have to admit that the annointing is on this album. I already taught my choir two of the songs that are on it. They are: "Nobody like Jesus" and "Souled Out". This album is amazing. The next song that I will teach my choir will be "Keep holding and don't let go of his hands." I am overwhelmed by this album. Please continue to bless me with your music ministry.
