4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Bizarre album - eclectic yes, but definitely bizarre.......2004-10-24

This album starts off in a usual Yello fashion ( although at that time it wasn't really known ) which is bright and breezy yet still a little quirky but then right about in the middle of the album things begin to get a little weird. The moody instrumentals give a sense of unease and by the time Assistant's Cry comes it completely knocks itself over with Dieter Meier sounding a bit like he's got a few screws loose somewhere and then oddly reverts back to how it was originally but somehow nothing feels the same - you're somehow waiting for the next creep out which never comes. They never quite did this again.....

4 out of 5 stars So relevant these days!.......2004-07-31

I was just listening to this album for the first time and thought I was hearing something totally contemporary. With electro being hot in the clubs, one can put on an early Yello song, and younger crowd would have no idea this was relaesed in the early 80s. Besides the fact this sound has made its comeback now, it also tells us that this band has created something timeless over 20 years ago. And it's not weird, it's art!

4 out of 5 stars Not weird at all.......2003-06-07

Lots of people have stated how weird and eclectic this album is. I think it is one of thier best. Sure, it takes a little getting used to, but if it took me no time to digest the wonderful sound these guys were making when I was only 13 years old (1983) then I see no reason why people don't digest it so easily. Anyway, long live Yello (which apparently they are) and buy all their CDs. It's an order.

5 out of 5 stars You gotta say YES!!.......2003-04-22

Yello are the pioneers of electronic music! Yes, they are weird... but the best thing is they're not conventional. Solid Pleasure is a journey into the experimental, jungle, space-world - a great trip! I also recommend: You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess, One Second and Stella!

Wish I could see them live!

3 out of 5 stars Too wierd.......2002-07-17

I'm a great Yello fan and I simply love their music, at least most of it. When I listened to Solid Pleasure it was almost only wierd, with no meaning in the music (exept for Bostich and Eternal Legs which are great!), I almost got headache of it. Ofcourse, this was their first CD and Yello has just become better and better, so I think this first CD was a sort of beginner album (now they know what they have to do to make good music). For you who want good Yello music, I recommend Baby, Flag, Essentials or One Second.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite of the 5.......2003-05-06

This was the 1st "Omar" CD I owned. Bought it as an import in 1994 and with in months, Omar became my favorite soul/r&b artist. Omar mixes different vocal ranges into an unique blend of soulful grooves. This CD contains many of his soulful classics that bless underground radio today, 9 years later: I'm Still Standing/ Little Boy/ Need You Bad/ Making Sence Of It...

If you're like many who are just now introducing yourself to Omar because of his vocals on Common's "Eletric Circus", this is the perfect CD to start out with.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2004-06-16

I just saw Pleasure Club play at The Viper Room in Los Angeles. What an amazing show! If you think the album is good....just wait 'til you see these guys live. Absolutely phenomenal!!

5 out of 5 stars the greatest rock and roll band on the planet!.......2004-05-31

fact: pleasure club are currently the best rock n roll band in the world.
buy this album. you will not be disappointed.
first tune 'hey hey hey' blasts out of the speakers and drags you by the throat into a mix of buzzsaw guitars, fat bottom bass and funky as f**k skin pounding courtesy of marc hutner, grant curry and michael jerome. by the time the first bridge hits with james halls distinctive vocal proclaiming 'it feels so good to be alive!', you're hooked.
'high five hit me' kicks it even harder. dirty funk from hell, kickin' out the beats that rock, indeed!
'streetwalkers anthem' with it's glammy 'watch out, watch out all you lovers' refrain completes possibly one of the strongest three song album openings ever.
'on holy land' brings in a kind of eastern vibe, with trumpets-a-wailing and some great acoustic guitar licks.
'cops and criminals' brings back the funk groove with one of my favourite moments on the album (being the pc geek i am, i'll tell you that it occurs 49 seconds into the song...).
'day in darkness' with it's ultra cool bass riff and great melody is one of the albums 'poppier' songs.
'ended up with you' for me, contains the albums defining moment. the descending chords underneath the 'looking for those good times' vocal drain you emotionally but then 'this is living' comes along and lifts you right back up with it's all out badass rock assault.
'seduction' twists and turns all over the place. a great song with one of my favourite lyrics on the album ('i got my second verse' haha it's such a simple but cool line..).
'crooks' comes off like a sleazy jam from the backstreets of cool, 'this town is full of crooks, polotics and dirty books'.
'you want love' is the most beautiful tune on the album, a haunting ballad which shows just how amazing a singer james hall is.
'revolution in red' takes things out on a high note with it's almost manchester vibe and positive lyrics that tell you to 'walk out and be alive'.
this is right at the top of my album of the year list and alongside their debut 'here comes the trick', up there with my albums of the decade.
BUY! BUY! BUY! everyone deserves to feel the pleasure......

    5 out of 5 stars Rockin'!.......2004-05-19

This album is amazing! It takes you on a great journey through rock and roll from beginning to end. The Fugitive Kind should be in the ears of every music fan across the world!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-05-13

James Hall must be one of the most criminally under-appreciated artists around. After his amazing solo work, now we have Pleasure Club. The first Pleasure Club album kept up the standard, but The Fugitive Kind ups the ante even further. It would be tough to find a record with more 'in your face' conviction than this, especially in these bland days. It's the kind of album that bowls you over on first listen and leaves you immediately wanting to hear it again. What's extra great is the way the album is sequenced, just when you think you know what's coming next the band throws in a curveball to keep you on your toes. In short: Buy it!

    5 out of 5 stars WOW YELLO.......2007-02-04

If you are a fan of Yello, you gOTTa have this record.
I play it regularly and it is permanently on my iPod.
There are 6 Yello CD's in the remastered release series, I have and recommend buying them all. It's a great montage of Yello with this album being the first of the bunch.
    {The rest are: 2.Claro Que Si; 3.You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess; 4.Stella; 5.One Second; 6.Flag.}

    4 out of 5 stars yello's best!.......2006-04-14

This album was, I think, first released by the residential Ralph label in 1980 (correct me if I am wrong, but at least they DID release it)! At first listening me as a Residents fan was pretty much disappointed and began to have suspicions that Ralph was turning "disco" or "commercial" which would have been anathema. Even though the flip side of the first 7" was no problem the rest seemed a little too "trendy" to suit the Ralph league.

After repeated listenings however i discovered the innovativeness and the daring avantgardish mixes and ideas, even though the beat in some instances still disturbed me. After the many years that have gone by the ideas are not new anymore, neither is the way of creating music as Yello did new. These recordings today are but historical archives of a synthesizing pop culture that has turned over into digital sampling. Although these pieces are very 80ish in most regards, they have that playful and respectless attitude with them that signified the Ralph artists. And that's the thing with them that keeps them up.

I never became a big fan of Yello although I bought all I could get of them up until '86. But the first one, Solid Pleasure, is definetely the place to start as for early Yello - and it is still their best album to date.

3 out of 5 stars It's pretty good, but not their best........2006-03-22

This album is certainly a fun listen, as with all of their albums. But it lacks a certain thickness their later albums such as 'You Gotta Say Yes' and 'Stella' have. A lot of the songs are very short, at least, and it keeps you listening with an interest when the songs change frequently. Bostich is the highlight, with it's innovative rhythms and Macereana like verse. This album is for true fans only, if you like bostich get it on one of their greatest hits (Essential, New Mix in one go).

    5 out of 5 stars Shaggy........come back to us!!.......2005-02-25

As much as I enjoy listening to his music now, nothing compares to this cd! It seems that Shaggy has gone too mainstream and needs to go back to his roots. I first started listening to him when I saw his videos on BET's Caribbean Rhythms (Please BET...bring it back!!), and would like nothing better if he would (with Rayvon) go back to his old style.

5 out of 5 stars Every song is Great.......2003-08-15

I bought this CD this first day it came out, The songs are great, everything from Tek Set to Bedroom Bounty Hunter to the hit Oh Carolina. I wish Shaggy would go back to the sounds of this album

4 out of 5 stars Better then "Boombastic".......2000-06-12

If you like Shaggy's unique blend of reggae with hip-hop beats (and sometimes hip-hop macho posturing as well) then as a complete work this is probably his best album. Songs like "Oh Carolina" and "Nice and Lovely" are genuine new reggae gems from the early to mid-Nineties, and I spent a great deal of my younger teenage years enjoying this album. If you like some of Shaggy's radio hits, this album isn't too much of a stretch from those songs and I would say that you would most likely enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars If you dont like this band you may indeed, be deaf.......2007-05-29

C'MON!!!!!! This is one of the best records ever by one of the best bands ever! James Hall has an audible charisma that oozes everything amazing about rock and roll. Its a record of variable textures for sure but consistantly keeps the grind, dirt and power that makes it great as a whole. This and the other albums James has brought us are incredibly original for the first 10 spins and after the songs are memorized a true coneseur cant help but relisten and reslisten to see what makes the record tick.....and the infuencial range is enormous....its heavy, street smart funky, subversive, angry and enlightened by the ills of society all at the same time.PHAWKING BRILLIANT!!!! The mark of an amazing artist is when the influences are both hidden and apparent synonomously but always wrapped in sincerity......Pleasure Club is as broad and sincere as they come!

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS GIRL!.......2006-03-04

I may be biased because I just LOVE Rockell. I fell in love haaha, with her with her beginning songs, Dreamboy/Girl, I fell in Love, etc. I bought her second cd, and I was suprised it sounded nothing like her first one, but quickly fell in love with this cd as well. It does have a more RnB sound to it, but dance beats. All in all, I'd say this is a great cd if you like this kind of music. Lots of hype songs to work out, dance, clean your house, and just enough slow songs so you can sing about love gone wrong. Don't be so closeminded that she changed her sound. Theres not too many people doing the late 80s/early 90s freestyle sound. ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars She did it again! but this time with a little disappointment.......2003-12-02

As what the other reviewers have said, this album is not as much as Freestyle beats to it... only "Tears" and "Say You'll Be Mine". But definitely her voice is getting better and with the remake of "The Dance" of Garth Brooks, this single has been taking her to the top!

4 out of 5 stars Definitly Instant Pleasure!.......2002-12-30

This cd is great following her cd "What are you Looking At?" It's freestyle music at it's best when times are not. Her song "What You Did To Me", jamz in a way were you feel the song and also have a great time. If you like this cd you will also love Sharyn Maceren's "Always Dreaming" Debut cd.

5 out of 5 stars Instant Pleasure Indeed.......2001-01-07

I must say i am shocked at how good this album is. I would say 10 out of the 12 songs are worth the purchase. Rockell's first album "what are u lookin at" was good but nothing like this. Tears, and what u did to me are my favorites. Of Course the remake of the Garth Brooks song the Dance is also primo. Her voice is angelic. Buy it Now.

5 out of 5 stars ROCKELL: ALWAYS WILL BE THE BEST.......2000-11-29

I THINK THAT ROCKELL IS TRULY AN AMAZING SINGER. I HAVE BOTH OF HER CDS, AND HER SINGLES, AND I HAVE NOT BEEN DISSAPOINTED AT ALL. HER NEW CD IS AMAZING! ESPECIALLY THE FIRST SONG " WHAT YOU DID TO ME" HAS A GREAT BEAT TO IT AND THE LYRICS ARE REALLY GOOD. IF YOU HAVEN'T BOUGHT THIS CD-GO OUT AND BUY IT! THIS CD HAS A LITTLE FREESTYLE, DANCE, AND R&B. OVERALL, ROCKELL ALWAYS HAS GOOD BEATS AND WITH HER VOICE SHE WILL ALWAYS BE AROUND. YOU GOTTA CHECK IT OUT!
