5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest voices of all time.......2007-02-12

The great performances on this CD define the best in gospel music. Ms. Coates' voice was intense, raw yet amazingly controlled. She seemed to have tapped straight into the current: anguished, yet certain of God's grace. The music is propulsive, driving, relentless, yet always swinging: you can feel the sway of Ms. Coates' body as she sings (and the swaying of the other singers, too). One of the great things is to listen to the backup singers, who are singing their hearts out! The lyrics are brilliant. It's hard to choose among them, but the lovely "That's Enough" has long held a special place in my heart. But all of the songs repay frequent listening.

Around Christmas 1999 or 2000, I found Ms. Coates' phone number on-line. (She was living in Birmingham.) I called her and told her that I was a fan. She was lovely and modest, amazed that someone would call all the way from Seattle! Sadly, she died in about 2002--a loss to this world, but I'm sure that she died secure in her love for God. It is an amazing world that it could have had such a person in it as the great Dorothy Love Coates.

5 out of 5 stars Dorthy's The Greatest.......2006-10-05

I join with those who herald this as the greatest gospel singer of all time. That is not a designation that today's artists who listen for impeccable clarity and technical excellence would be likely to make, but strip away all the veneer, and what you are left with in vocal music is either an artist who can pull you into their experience, or not. There is no way to give this singer a serious listen and not hear her greatness. In fact, DLC takes you way beyond hearing and into the realm of the sacred. I was first introduced to her music as a child, some forty years ago, and it continues to impact me today. My mother spent the last three years of her life with Alzheimer Disease. She was a lover of music, but the music of DLC would move her past her disease into the presence of God. I applaud the artists of our day, and bid them God's speed in lifting the spirits of today's listeners. But there are times when I lay all of that aside and let DLC take me into the presence of God. She is beyond talented, gifted and the general terms we use to speak of artist. She is transciendent - in a class by herself. By no means divine, but without a doubt - divinely enabled. She is my unsung hero.

5 out of 5 stars Review of the best of dorothy Love coats Vols. 1-2.......2005-09-02

Order delivered in timely manner and in good condition. the songs are inspirational and performed with much enthusiasm.

5 out of 5 stars Two words: RAW POWER!!.......2005-06-22

No disrespect to the Stooges, (whom I also love) but this is unmatched in its intensity, soul, and sheer emotional force. To give you an idea: I personally am a non-theist who does not believe in God, the Bible, or anything remotely religion related.
BUT...the power of this cannot be ignored, by ANYONE!! Pay no attention to the person who said Dorothy Love has a "poor" voice. It is more a case of his poor auditory perception, because make no mistake: her voice surpasses every singer to ever live
(yes, this inclues Aretha!) Her phrasing (where the notes and syllables are placed rhythmically) is impeccable, soulful, and carries you on a journey of the senses. Her tone and timbre (the actual sound of her voice) is so unique, which is why I believe some will say its "poor" or "bad". But this is really subjective to the listener. "Bad" singers are people who cannot stay on pitch, and cannot "phrase" properly (see above). Dorothy Love has an amazing sense of pitch, deftly navigating her way through each composition with a mastery possessed by very few.
"I Shall Know Him" is a veritable tour-de-force of vocal prowess that will chill you to your very core! The backing vocals here
are instruments unto themselves, and the arrangements are classic! The imagery used literally brings you right into the song, with candid descriptions, such as "My body has been chilled by the hand of Death" and decapited heads on platters, etc.!! I
don't remember my grannies church singing those kinds of songs!! Maybe if all churches played this kind of music, instead of that wimpy, vanilla-white Adult Contemporary, soft rock crap, they might actually get people wanting to go to church!! Nobody has, nor every will be able to sing with this kind of fire, passion and conviction!!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Like It.......2002-06-08

This is the top of gospel music. Coates is an example of the lead singer with a rather poor voice, but the enthusiasm of her performance and the energy of the arrangements make her music absolutely unique. The songs are not feel good religiousity either; each one is doctrinally and scripturally sound, and usually with a bite. "I Wouldn't Mind Dying" rocks like crazy, but the thought is I wouldn't mind if dying was all, but after death is the judgment. Heavy. Did I say it rocks like crazy? Yes.

4 out of 5 stars There will never be another artist like Dorothy.......2002-07-19

I have always been a fan of Dorothy Love Coates. She will always have a special place in my heart. She sung songs that you could feel way down in the inward parts of your soul. She love the Lord and she didn't car who knew it. Heaven must be a beautiful place since she have arrived there. Truly there's rest for the weary and she found rest when she beheld her savior's face and she at last was able to shake her mother's hand again.Truly this is an awesome cd from an awesome lady. May her legacy continue on forever.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful R&B - which also happens to be a gospel album!.......2001-07-16

I have never been particularly attracted to gospel music, but one day I was at a friend's house and this CD was playing. The music was high energy the singing uplifting and made Aretha Franklin sound mundane. Dorothy Love Coates was an amazingly gifted singer - and this album sounds as fresh today as it must have when it was recorded in the early 60s.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dorothy Love-Coates!!.......2007-04-24

"I Wont' Let Go" is worth the CD itself! By this time of recording she was on Nashboro Records and Cleopatra Kennedy (Cleo, later a Cleveland Singer/Rev. James Cleveland)is at her whooping Soprano best!! This is a hard to find CD and I recommend it highly to any die-hard Dorothy Love fan, a MUST have!! She was a true pioneer of gospel music. See her in the movie, "Beloved" with the praying women.

4 out of 5 stars An adequate overview of their Nashboro material.......2004-10-30

It is such a shame that more of Dorothy Love's material isn't made available. The waning desire for true Gospel music is not only disheartening, but has become seriously detrimental to the genre overall. Ms. Love put out at least six albums for Nashboro during the late 60's to mid 70's, and while this "best of" is an adequate overview of that material, it lacks some of the more soul stirring and social conciousness writings of her better songs. Traditional songs such as Jesus Is All The World To Me is not found here and neither is the politically charged They Won't Believe. Also, their bluesy treatment of Rev. Gary Davis' If I Had My Way is well worth seeking. Staples such as I Won't Let Go, You Don't Know How Good God's Been To Me and Every Day Will Be Sunday ARE found on this edition, and are some the best material in Gospel anywhere. Although two great bonus tracks were added, there is just enought material here to make the listener scream for more. Alas, aside from the Specialty recordings, the seeker must search the old collectors' LP bins and just hope someone who didn't appreciate the treasures stored within was unwise enough to dump it all. Many soul singers of this golden era were not only inspired by Dorothy's strong gritty vocals, but also emmulated her phrasing almost to a tee. Listen to LaVern Baker's store front Gospel song from 1961, "Saved" and Kim Weston's "Love Me All The Way". She was also a favorite (as was Ruth Davis) of Mavis Staples and her songs have been covered by artists ranging from Gospel (Mahalia Jackson) to Country (Johnny Cash) and Rock (Jerry Garcia). What more evidence do we need to get record execs off their duff and search the tape vaults for more music from Dorothy Love-Coates & the Gospel Harmonettes? Aside from Nashboro and Specialty they have recorded for Vee Jay, and Savoy.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2002-05-12

It was sad to read Dorothy Love Coates obituary the other day in the newspaper. Many say Mahalia Jackson was the greatest woman gospel singer, but in my opinion hands down it was Ms. Coates.
She was offered the chance to sing pop and record companies lined up outside her door. Jerry Wexler and Ahmet Ertagun were convinced she could follow and maybe even eclipse Aretha Franklin if she crossed over from gospel. But Ms. Coates said she could never turn her back on the Lord. Regardless, every song on this album is brilliant as Ms. Coates overpowers her accompaniests (who were quite accomplished) with her joyful soul.
I hope there is a heaven... because if there is Dorothy Love Coates is leading the choir!
