Amazon.com essential recording

The great irony of the Louvin Brothers, today considered by many the best of the brother duos, is that they peaked at a time when the form was almost dead. Their vocal sound was as old as the Alabama hills, and they kept alive such archaic tunes as "Knoxville Girl" and "In the Pines." Yet their studio bands were up to date, if not exactly Nashville Sound knockoffs, and much of their material, including "You're Running Wild," was fairly contemporary. Traditionalists or modernists? When it's this good, who cares? And besides, who's going to argue with guys who knew Sin the way Charlie and Ira Louvin knew Sin? --John Morthland

5 out of 5 stars When I Stop Dreaming, Best of the Louvin Brothers.......2007-07-09

I saw Charlie Louvin in concert recently in San Diego. Very few in the crowd had heard him live before but all knew his reputation. He did not disapoint and made a room full of new hardcore fans. He and his late brother recorded some wonderful songs that will be evergreen much like the work of Hank Williams. When you look back at the great Brothers acts like the Stanleys, Jim and Jesse and the Delmore Brothers you know the Louvin Brothers belong on top of that elite group. Their harmony work was the best. You won't hear this great stuff on the radio anymore as Nashville has long ago turned it's back on it's roots. You gotta go dig up the really good stuff by yourself. This record is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF THE LOUVIN BROTHERS: A Review.......2007-07-03

This is a must own CD for lovers of traditional and blue grass influenced country music. The tight harmonies, beautiful melodies, and poignant stories are a real treat to listen to and enjoy.

You won't hear better country than "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby", "You're Running Wild", "My Baby's Gone", and the title song, "When I Stop Dreaming".

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable for Serious C & W Collectors.......2007-03-04

Like all great musicians--whatever the music--the Louvin Brothers had a sound all their own: often imitated, never equalled. A basic album for listeners who love country and want a fuller sense of where it all began.

5 out of 5 stars A good starter album from the Louvin Brothers.......2006-06-30

I read the book, "Country Conversations" by Timothy Edward Jones initially for his interview with John McCrea of Cake, who happens to be a big fan of the the Louvin Brothers since childhood. Indeed, he got Charlie Louvin to play all 16 dates on Cake's 2003 Unlimited Sunshine Tour along with Cheap Trick, the Detroit Cobras, and the Hackensaw Boys who was the backing band for Charlie Louvin.
In the 2 pg. interview with McCrea, he stated his favorite Louvin songs were "You're Learning" (an Every Brothers sound-alike) and "the Great Atomic Power", the better of the two and both on this album. Definitely a good primer of the Louvin's music!
ps--As much McCrea in that interview stated that "Louvin Brothers' covers make me nauseous," "The Great Atomic Power" deserves a makeover (a faster tempo & a fuller musical accompaniment sung by a female duo; myself as one of that duo)--
John McCrea, you have been warned!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant harmonizing.......2005-12-14

The best of the best of The Louvins, but ignore Amazon's track listing - see P.D.Harris' review for all the tracks included.
A must-have collection unless you want to invest in the multi-disc box.

4 out of 5 stars Good for starters.......2007-04-29

There is really no better way to start off your Rambo collection than with this CD. My personal favorites are "Tears Will Never Stain The Streets Of That City" and "We Shall Behold Him". Dottie Rambo is in her own league when it comes to writing gospel music, the same goes for Ronny Hinson, Gerald Crabb, and Carson Howard.

This CD really makes a person wish that The Singing Rambos were still together. In my mind, they are one of the greatest southern gospel groups to ever step foot on stage. Give this CD a listen, and you will be introduced to some great vintage gospel.

    5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2006-11-10

Finding it quite hard to find this kind of music in S.A it was really suprising how easy it was to buy this product and how soon it arrived from the states

5 out of 5 stars When Choosing 'The Rambos' You Can Not Go Wrong.......2006-03-03

Trio or not. Each member of the that family is a HUGE talent in their own right. Their music is SO well written, and annointed. My absolute favorite, is the towering gospel hit 'Tears Will Never Stain The Streets Of That City' from 1976. It was in the TOP 5 CHRISTIAN SONGS FOR 1976, some sources indicate it AS the #1 gospel song in 1976. I tend to agree. But, it does not stop there. All of their songs are absolutely AWESOME. I personally wish the album 'There Has To Be A Song' billed as 'The Soul Singing Rambos' were out on Cd. May I tell you? It touched my heart & soul! It is a masterpeice by ANYONE'S standards. Christian music just DOES NOT get better than this! Now, THAT last statement friends, is MY opinion........ the rest...... FACT.

    5 out of 5 stars Gospel Classic.......2004-12-12

Dottie Rambo is the queen of gospel. Her songwriting is in a class by itself. The trio mentioned in the previous review is Dottie's husband and daughter and a very important part of Dottie and her music.

5 out of 5 stars Dottie Rambo is Queen.......2004-02-06

Dottie is the queen of song writers. I only have one complaint about this cd. The complaint is that is a trio group and not Dottie alone.

5 out of 5 stars Best Country Album Compilation Available!.......2002-09-03

This was the first album to be released under "The Best of Austin City Limits" from their vast library of classic country music. It delivers the best country album compilation I've ever heard. With the likes of Mary Chapin Carpenter's "I Feel Lucky" (and you will if you own this great album) to Waylon Jennings "I've Always Been Crazy" and Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man", all the great country music venues are explored here. From slow, tender love songs to foot-stompin' tunes, the minutes race by like an old iron horse headed west into the sunset as you listen to your favorite hits. It all ends too soon, but lively, with "Boogie Back to Texas" by Asleep At The Wheel. If you don't own this album, get it. Then do someone else a favor--share it!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2002-01-16

From the familiar first words, "Its Austin City Limits" followed by the unmistakeable voice of Merle doing "Silver Wings", this CD captures what the show is all about. I listen to this CD at least once a week! Just buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Who had to choose the best ofý?.......2000-05-09

"Austin City Limits" has been on the air since 1976. How does somebody arrive at the 16 best performances from those 24+ years!

Anybody who watches ACL regularly is aware that it certainly isn't just country music; some of the best acts I've seen have been Stevie Ray Vaughan, Danny Gatton, John Mayall, The Neville Brothers. This collection, however, definitely leans toward "country" acts. (I believe there's a "blues best of" compilation as well.) With so much material available, something would definitely be wrong if there were a dud performance in a 16-cut collection, and there's not. (The disc is a mere 51 ½ minutes - why not 20 or 25 minutes more?) Some of my favorites: a rockin' "Blue Side of Town" by Patty Loveless, "Baby Now That I've Found You" by Alison Krauss, "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones.

I'd really like to be able to purchase my favorite ACL programs from over the years, either video or audio, but alas, they blame licensing / royalty complications. So I guess these "Best of" compilations will have to do. And this one does nicely.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......1998-08-04

This has to be one of the finest collection albums ever put together. The sound is crisp, clear and the song selection is superb. Every country fan will know the songs on this one. I highly recommend this album.

If you think these songs are familiar, with a familiar arrangement, you are right. This CD is IDENTICAL to "Bluegrass From Heaven: The Essential Gospel Collection, Various Artists". If you already own the latter, don't bother purchasing "The Absolute Best of Bluegrass Gospel". Actually, the music is 5-stars *****, I just considered it deceitful marketing to re-release a CD under a different name.

5 out of 5 stars First tier sampling of Southern Gospel.......1998-07-17

This is a great introduction to traditional Southern Gospel numbers (Daniel Prayed) and more praise song-sounding arrangements. The Southern Gospel sound, as these recordings capture, runs the gamut from African-American call and response to bluegrass-laced close harmony and high lonesome singing.

This is great stuff. Don't miss it.

4 out of 5 stars Uncle Jim O'Neal would be happy & proud to know that his vision & life's work continue to be shared & enjoyed.......2007-01-03

Playing Time - 46:53 -- With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Since its 1955 creation, Rural Rhythm has released hundreds of classic performances by many legendary bluegrass and old-time musicians such as J.E. Mainer, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Vassar Clements, Hylo Brown, Bill Harrell, Jim Eanes, and many others. This album is part of that archival catalog. The label owes its Arcadia, California start to Uncle Jim O'Neal whose vision was to release the music of many top bluegrass and old-time musicians in the 1950-70s, seeking success where Starday had failed by producing records of limited appeal by lesser known, albeit talented, musicians. Early ads for records released by Uncle Jim O'Neal stated that the LPs sold for only $3.50 apiece. The self-professed "Little Cotton Picker," O'Neal also took an approach of releasing 20 songs on each 33 1/3 RPM album. These would have been great bargains in the mid-1960s when major label monaural records (with only about a dozen songs) were selling for $3.98 and stereophonic records were $4.98. The items still sold well, and Rural Rhythm Records thrived and flourished.

A sampler such as this CD will give you a taste of the large and varied Rural Rhythm musical archive. With 25 tracks of music remastered by Steve Hoffman, featured bands include Don Reno & Bill Harrell, Mac Martin & The Dixie Travelers, Frosty Mountain Boys with Raymond Fairchild, Mac Wiseman, Earl Taylor & Jim McCall, Jim Greer & The Mac-O-Chee Valley Boys, Curly Fox, The Marksmen, Bobby Smith and the Boys From Shiloh, Lillie Mae and the Dixie Gospel-Aires. Liner notes are provided by Nashville-based country music historian Colin Escott.

The label continues to demonstrate great business acumen in both issuing and reissuing traditional material to give it the attention and respect it deserves. Resurgence of interest in such material compels music fans with intellectual or fanatical streaks to dig deep into such archival material and seek it out. Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. Don't expect to always hear stereo separation, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. Just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass sound of yesteryear. The strength of a sampler like this is its inherent rusticity, rootsy sounds, and historical value. Material from twelve LPs is sampled on this CD.

If you're a traditional bluegrass fan, you're sure to discover artists for further exploration. I've listen extensively to bluegrass for four decades, and my discovery was The Ritchey Brothers who sing "God Put A Rainbow in the Clouds" and "Heavenly Light is Shining on Me." For the label, they produced a tribute to the Delmore Brothers back in 1968. Another band taking advantage of Uncle Jim's business arrangement was an Ohio bluegrass band, Jim Greer and the Mac-O-Chee Valley Folks. They produced three albums on Rural Rhythm. ("Log Cabin Songs" RR-133, "Stars of the WWVA Jamboree" RR-152, "Country Favorites" RR-161). Three of that band's songs (I Saw The Light, Paul and Silas, Church in the WIldwood) are included on this sampler. Uncle Jim O'Neal would be happy and proud to know that his vision and life's work continue to be shared and enjoyed. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
