Album Description
Newly expanded version of this classic early '90s 'shoegazer' album, from a band who never quite made the impact of those that preceded them, maybe because their music was uptempo by the standards of the genre. The album has now been boosted to a full 18 tracks by the addition of all the b-sides from their singles and EP, along with 'Die Die Die' which was originally only available on a free record that came with the album, and has never appeared on CD before. Producers include Robin Guthrie, Stephen Hague and Ralph Jezzard, guest vocals are from the divine Rachel Goswell (Slowdive, Mojave 3). Cherry Red. 2006.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome..........2006-10-21
The legendary shoegaze album Whirlpool by Chapterhouse is now re released with many extra bonus tracks from 3 of there Ep's.
The first 9 tracks are the original songs from the album.
The other tracks, 10-16 are from the 1st 3 Ep's: Freefall, Sunburst, and Pearl.
However, though I enjoy all of the tracks, be warned that 10-14 sound a little different compared to the normal feel of the album since they were created before this album from the 1st 2 Ep's. The last two tracks, 15-16, are more like the original album because they were from the EP that was made the same year as this. The booklet also includes lyrics of the songs and has pictures of there EP's.
This is a great album by a great shoegaze band. Anyone into My Bloody Valeninte, Boo Radleys, Bowery Electric, Lush, Slowdive, and many others of this kind will like this.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing!!.......2007-02-23
Great music performed by one of the best orchestras in the world. What more can you ask for?Ron Goodwin is a genius. The music that he wrote is incredible. His best pieces are featured here on this cd. From the great marches like " Force ten from Navarone" to great romantic sounding pieces like "Deadly Stranger" and the love theme from 633 Sqadron. I also really like the selections from "Monte Carlo or Bust"(almost seven minutes long) and the selections from "Those magnificent men in Their flying machines" (six minutes long). Rumon Gamba and the BBC Philharmonic do a great job performing all the pieces, and add another great cd to the Chandos movie series. This is a must have for fans of Ron Goddwin or great film music in general. It well deserves the 5 stars and maybe even more.
Enjoyable!.......2007-01-10
Ron Goodwin is a fine composer. I particularly enjoyed listening to the music from the early 1960's Miss Marple films, starring Margaret Rutherford. But, to let one know; the Marple music is different from most of the Goodwin scores on this CD. His music is mostly of the rousing march or military variety.
None Better.......2006-10-31
Goodwin's music is outstanding. His World War II scores are outstanding. They have drive and purpose. They sound good too.
those magnificent men in their flying machines.......2005-08-05
This CD provides a range of music mainly from films and concerned with epic war dramas all from the pen of the well known Ron Goodwin. Films such as 633squadron, submarine - X, operation strongbow, force ten from navarone, where eagles dare are just some which are represented. I was particularly looking for the title'Those magnificant men in their flying machines' to add to a slide show of vintage planes in flight and on exhibition. This fitted the bill just fine.

Customer Reviews:
A very patchy album.......2006-05-09
I've no idea why fans of Chapterhouse rate Whirlpool as their best album. Blood Music is much more consistant, the tracks are stronger and well produced, and it has also aged much better than Whirlpool.
Whirlpool to my ears always sounded like the work of a band who didn't really know what they wanted to achieve, and consequently they made a bit of a dog's dinner of their first album. Admittedly there are some great moments; the obvious examples being Breather and Pearl. But there are some very weak links too, where they really do sound like just another derivative shoegazing band trying unsuccessfully to rip off a few My Bloody Valentine riffs (and the lesser moments of MBV at that!)
If all you've heard is Pearl amd you liked it, then I think you'd be happier purchasing Blood Music first. Don't be distracted by the new version of Whirlpool with the bonus tracks from the early EPs; those songs are just as hit and miss as the original album tracks.
another over-rated shoegazer "classic".......2005-09-28
this is an ok album, typical ambient reverby guitar throughout with classics like pearl and april but to be honest it sounds seriously dated.i could never understand why they put a crap ambient mix of "something more" on it instead of the far superior original. some of you shoegazer reviewers need to get with the times! the reason loveless is still so popular is because it still sounds modern unlike most of the other shoegazer bands.
still, not a bad effort.
Lush, melodic and dreamy........2005-07-25
Whirlpool from Chapterhouse is one of the most melodic and interesting efforts from any of the Shoegazer, bands. The music is a wash of reverb and liquid melodies Accentuated with drums that almost have a John Bonham feel to their mix. This particular release was by far Chapterhouse's best.
A Celebration of the Possibilities of Sound!.......2003-05-01
It goes without saying that any mention of the term "shoegaze" immediately brings to mind the name of one band more than any other: My Bloody Valentine. Anyone with even a modicum of interest in alternative/indie pop music has no doubt at least heard of, if not heard, My Bloody Valentine's 1991 opus, "Loveless," an album that many critics and music fans consider to be the *definitive* shoegaze recording of all time and a landmark album in the history of pop music. Of course, all the critical and fan slobber is not without merit---"Loveless" is indeed a masterpiece, and in the horrifying possiblity that you haven't heard it, consider yourself officially ordered to drop everything you're doing and buy it right now!
But there is one problem with "Loveless." Yes, there actually *is* a problem with "Loveless." And that is this: MBV's musical apex has somehow succeeded in completely overshadowing several absolutely stunning albums of the shoegaze genre. I can't tell you just how frustrating it is to hear a music fan say something along these lines: "Well, as far as shoegaze goes, I have MBV's 'Loveless,' and since that album is clearly the benchmark of the genre, I don't need anything else or want to hear any other shoegaze albums."
This attitude makes no sense whatsoever. Imagine if this person had the same mindset about 60s guitar pop and only had "Sgt. Pepper" in his or her collection. That would mean this person would never hear "Pet Sounds," which is a frightening thought.
Well, let me just say this: If "Loveless" is the "Sgt. Pepper" of the shoegaze genre, than "Whirlpool" clearly is its "Pet Sounds." To put it succintly, "Whirlpool" is an amazing aural smorgasbord of swirling guitars, cascading keyboards, trancey and trippin' dance beats, atmospheric and angelic vocals, and waves upon waves of layered, ethereal effects that all add up to something that truly trancends the confines of pop music. And that's what is so great about it. Listening to this album in 2003, I am immediately reminded of the lack of imagination that is so prevalent in much of today's pop music. "Whirlpool" is the sound of four musicians pushing their talents and skills to the absolute limit.
There is almost a palpable feeling of urgency (as well as energy) on this recording, that stems from the excitement of breaking down sonic limitations that is very appealing.
Opening with the hyper-kinetic "Breather," Chapterhouse immediately establish themselves as a band with loads of inspired ideas, many of which are diametrically opposed to one another. And yet, as varying as these ideas are, the band somehow manage to coalesce these sounds into exciting music that gels completely. For example, "Breather" begins with an aggressively played, abrasive, yet still melodic, rock riff. On top of this riff we hear some very aggressive percussion in the form of almost violent-sounding tom rolls, cymbal crashes and a fast tempo. A lesser band would have seized these ideas and proceeded with an all-out 100% aggressive song complete with angry "shouts" or an aggressive vocal approach. But Chapterhouse goes in the opposite direction. When we finally do hear the vocals, it is a revelation. They are soft, gentle, yes, even beautiful. And the vocal phrasing itself is not fast, but slow---going in complete contrast against the aggressive backdrop of guitar and up-tempo drums. In addition, the sublime vocals are blanketed by some truly soothing sounding keyboards. From there we are treated to other interesting background sounds and effects, but you need to be a close listener to hear all of them. Repeated listens reveal that this music has been carefully written and executed---what initially seems just like indiscriminate background noise comes across later as being integral to the full spectrum of the band's sound.
While I love this album from start to finish, my absolute favorite track on here is "Pearl." It opens with a very unusual and distinctive chord melody played on a keyboard and then we hear a very cool sounding guitar come in and do an absolutely killer harmony part. Simply amazing. And from there, the track proceeds to mix some very interesting and quite groove-heavy dance beats with their trademark soft ethereal vocals and swirling guitars. Just a remarkable sonic achievement.
From this point in the album, Chapterhouse continue to gently sway back and forth between delicate, melancholic melodies and outright noise experimentation ("Autosleeper" is a perfect example of this).
I have to admit that it took me numerous listens to fully "get" this album, and even now, there are loads of little nuances that I'm still discovering. But because of this, I am always excited about going back and listening to this album again.
Recommended not just for fans of shoegaze, but for any music fans out there that are genuinely interested in sound experimentation, ambience, and some very nice melodies.

Great, Solid Rock album.......2006-02-14
Wow. Had this album a while back, lost it somewhere, and just bought it again. This is Prayer Chain at their best. From their stirring and thoughtful lyrics (something you don't always or ussually find in christian music) to their rythyms this album is golden.
One of the best Chritian albums of all time.......2004-08-08
The Prayer Chain was the first Christian dand I got into 12 years ago. My youth pastor at the time took me to a Petra concert. The opening band was the prayer chain, I was blown away, to hear Christian music that was a lot like Peral Jam. The Prayer Chain was and is way better than Petra, I bought their first album "Neverland Sessions" and this album. The lyrics are amazing, the music is amazing, these guys were pionners of Christian altertaive music. This is a must have album for anyone who enjoys awesome rock music, with an great message. God truly did bless the prayer chain.
AMAZING!.......1998-11-03
For those who would like a mixture of the Doors and Pearl Jam you have found it in The Prayer Chain. All of their albums are different - drastically different - but are all awesome in their own. I stongly recomend any of these albums to the Christian alternative lover out there. JRW
"Whilrpool" a preview of Prayer Chain's greatness.......1998-10-30
The 1990s seems filled with bands that are either carbon copys of other bands and devoid of talent or worse, bands that may have talent but devoid of any meaning. If you look long and hard enough, you find "Prayer Chain." Hailing from California, this band will go down as the most talented "unknown' band of the decade. The six-song "Whirlpool" is an excellent cd for the beginner, or fans who want to get a hold of some of their best tunes. Really its a preview of their even more brilliant follow up albums, "Shawl" and "Mercury." The only reason it is give four stars is that its not long enough. However, it definitely gives you bang fo the buck, so to speak. "Shine" and "Mercy" are both very catchy, and frontman Tim Taber's voice seems so passionate and haunting in 'I Believe" that the listener will scratch his head and wonder why this band isn't bigger than it is. Other highlights include the guitar-ladden "Follow Me", and the simple, but beautiful, acoustic closer; "Whirlpool." What makes this band so special is they attack faith and relationship issues with such sincerity and clarity. They tell the listern how they really FEEL about issues, unlike a lot talentless bands of today. Their lyrical honesty along with their musical talent makes them a special treasure only known to a handful of music fans. I pray they become better known to the rest of the world.
Alternative rock at it's best........1998-07-01
If you like alternative rock that actually says something, this is it. They really cut to the chase, both lyrically and musically. This cd just grabs you and won't let go. It's a short cd, so hit "repeat" on your cd and listen to it over and over. You won't get tired of it.
They have a bit of that "Seattle garage band" sound to them. Their guitars are, well, searing is the only word I can think of. Their music just kind of sticks in your head, and the lyrics are a bit haunting.

Album Description
A mixture of alternative rock sprinkled with beatlesque influences, Whirlpool sparkles with grandiose melodies and immediately appealing songs. "A welcome alternative (excuse the pun) to the plethora of "The" bands that have plagued their way into the arteries of mainstream radio" (Smother.net). "Whirlpool is clearly a deeply personal outlay of emotions, each song dripping in open-for-interpretation lyrics and dense non-cluttered layering of sounds, as if 'Abbey Road' was used for inspiration." (Alternative Rock Review).
Whirlpool was co-produced and mixed by Bruce A. Miller, known for working with various artists including Dave Matthews, Aretha Franklin, and Mariah Carey. An additional track was mixed by Ken Lewis known for working with the Beastie Boys, Lenny Kravitz, and Mary J. Blige.

A true understated masterpiece.......2005-12-24
Imagine the Beatles, Alan Parsons and Matthew Sweet on the same album. That's the Sour Mournings all roled into one. This is one of those albums that grabs you from the first song and by the time you get to track 11 'Vanity' you want to start all over again. Give this album a listen and you will be happy you did.
