At the height of their 2004 "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)" fame, Big & Rich's one lament was that radio didn't know what to do with them, even though they sold two million copies of their debut album, Horse of a Different Color. Their follow-up, 2005's Comin' to Your City, likewise failed to score a Top 10 single, but still went platinum. Now comes their third album, and their first single, "Lost in This Moment"--an overtly emotional ballad about getting hitched--is selling like Gatorade at a chili cook-off. Are Music City's most likeable lunatics playing it safe? Well, it sounds that way. And if that's a disappointment, given their initial rollicking (and much needed) assault on staid Nashville, there's more bad news. Big Kenny's loopy songs of peace, love, and hippified unity (especially the overblown "Eternity," featuring John Legend) now sound so familiar, replete with Pentecostal blathering ("Brothers and sisters..."), you can sing along the first time you hear them. The duo sequences the album like a vinyl disc of old, with a virtual A-side (ballads) and B-side (rockers). Not surprising, the B-side wins, even if "Radio" owes too much to the self-aggrandizing hullabaloo of Comin' to Your City and Wyclef Jean drops by to rap a few country clichés. It takes an awfully long time for this album to be fun, but it eventually does, with an AC/DC cover ("You Shook Me All Night Long") and a Brooks & Dunnish turbo-tonker ("Loud"). Fans of Big & Rich already understand that they take their spirituality as seriously as their sinning. But next time, here's hoping they spend more time in Saturday night, and less in Sunday morning. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

On their third album, Big & Rich bust down the doors of country music with new sounds, new energy and new audiences. The title Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace describes not only this collection but also Big & Rich themselves. Thank heaven for Big & Rich!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BIG AND RICH ALBUM YET!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-15

wow wow wow! Big & Rich are musical marvels. This album may be more tame than their last two but they still tip the scales and turn you upside down. Here's my best proffesional review on it;

Lost In This Moment:
The first single from this album showcases John Rich's pure country vocals. A very touching song that will toss Lonestar's 'Amazed' out the window on best wedding songs. Well written and well sung.

Between Raising Hell And Amazing Grace:
This is my personal favorite on this album because it's me! Big Kenny and I must have the same thoughts. The best lyric in there is "May be passing out on friday but come sunday i'll be passing the collection plate'. The perfect anthem for any hell raising christian.

Faster Than Angels Fly:
As soon as I heard the opening melody I had chills. Then I heard 'modern day romeo and juliet' and my heart stopped. A very intriguing song about a young couple living in a bad neighbourhood!

Eternity:
This has Big Kenny written all over it. It's a great chorus with gnarley lyrics lol! He paints quite the picture in your mind about what he sees in 'eternity'

When The Devil Gets The Best Of Me:
Another chilling song about temptations. It should speak to a lot of angry people. A great acoustic track.

Radio:
The most Big & Rich flavoured song on the record. Just rock out with the boys in this one. Starting with Big Kenny preaching about prejiduce then just the most rockin' grooves ever. Radio is a future hit single.

You Never Stop Loving Somebody:
This is another neat song. It's just a simple truth and Big & Rich make it so much fun to listen too.

High Five:
This is the only song I am not crazy about on the album. It reminds me alot of a song on the 'City' album called 'Blow My Mind'

Please Man:
The first time I heard this I thought it was weird. The second time I started singing, the third time I was rapping. A great cameo performance by Wyclef Jean. With his country breakdown, you start enjoying the diversity and it just gets better.

You Shook Me All Night Long:
You can't beat an original .......... NOT!(quote Borat lol). I never really cared for Ac/DC's version of the song so I didn't rush to this track but when it came on I just had to listen. And now it's the first song I play when I pop the album in. B+R you amaze me

Loud:
What can I say. It's a song that i'm sure B+R are gonna rock out to on stage. The lyrics are so Brooks & Dunn, but the guitar in it is Big & Rich!

BUY THIS ALBUM AND YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT AT ALL

5 out of 5 stars Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace.......2007-07-12

I absolutely love this CD. Every song on it. Another big hit from Big & Rich.

2 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2007-07-07

I was excited for the release of the latest CD from John & Kenny, even with the toned down and boring lead off single "Lost In This Moment" played on the radio.

This is Big & Rich, they can't let me down.

Well they did.

They present this CD as if it was an old vinyl LP album, with "side one" loaded with strange and short intros into rather forgetable slow tunes.

It's only till you get to "Side B" that they duo tries to redeem itself with a more familiar style and a few rockin' uptempo tracks like 'Radio', 'Loud', and a remake of the AC/DC classic 'You Shook Me All Night Long'.

If I could buy just one "side" of this latest effort, I would pay half the price and go for side two.

It's this sellout to commercialism that also ruined another favorite band of mine, Lonestar, who bore me now with every song and CD they release.

Hmmm... John Rich used to be in Lonestar. Things that make you go hmmmm.

5 out of 5 stars Big and Rich.......2007-07-06

Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace...perfect title for this CD. Lost in this Moment - if I was getting married again, would be my song...it is perfect for a wedding and if you are so much in love! Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace is yet another great song...very catchy tunes and glad I made the purchase. The best cd by far that Big and Rich has produced.

5 out of 5 stars Big and Rich, Great Again!.......2007-07-06

Another Great CD. Changers have been made. This is progress,Am now looking forward to the next one.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat completed the transition from cantata for schoolkids to big-budget glitzfest with Steven Pimlott's 1991 London revival. Here's the 1992 Canadian version of that show, and even if it's not an ideal recording--Janet Metz as the narrator is no match for Laurie Beechman in the original Broadway cast and there's a little too much synthesizer in the orchestrations--this CD is valuable for the performance of former teen pop idol Donny Osmond as the title character. He's in excellent voice, and was so right for the role that he was selected to preserve it for the 2000 video production. And of course the songs are still here, showcasing Rice's witty lyrics and Lloyd Webber's chameleon tendencies--dabbling in country, calypso, French cafés, and a King-like pharaoh--as well as favorites "Any Dream Will Do," "Close Every Door," and "Go, Go, Go Joseph." This production also includes the "Joseph Remix" (also known as the "Joseph Megamix"), a nine-minute medley of themes arranged with a heavy beat that was used for a kind of onstage aerobics routine as the show's postscript. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars JUST THE BEST.......2007-05-13

If you haven't seen this play yet, don't miss it if it comes to your town.
However, if you want to hear the music with Donny Osmond's voice, then buy this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous Music!.......2007-03-08

It goes without saying that the music is fabulous, as ever. It's a timeless story and Donny Osmond still has a great voice. I bought the sound track after watching the movie over and over, so my point of view is biased toward the movie sound track. I found the narrator's voice on this CD to be a little too high-pitched for me, but I eventually got used to it. The French accent in "Those Canaan Days" was deliberately overdone and spoiled an otherwise interesting song. Other than that, the CD music was close enough to the movie sound track to be satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars We love it.......2007-01-17

This was for my 10 year old daughter for Christmas. She has every song memorized already. It was a good deal too!

2 out of 5 stars Unhappy with sound.......2007-01-09

I had bought an original cassette when I saw the show in Chicago. I was very excited to find this CD as I had worn the cassette out. I was however very disappointed with the quality of sound. I could not hear the lead singer over the chorus, no matter how I adjusted my speakers. I do not know if all these CD's are like this, but I would not recommend it due to poor quality of sound.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Family listening!.......2006-08-29

I used this DVD to teach the kids a song from Vacation bible school, and had a bunch of people ask me where I bought it. It was just what I needed.

Amazon.com essential recording

This Rhino re-release of Amazing Grace is at least as much a work of love as of marketing. The sound is beefier and clearer, but most importantly, the two-day church sessions are included. So, there's much more church (specifically, Reverend James Cleveland's marvelous orating) on the record, as well as contemporaryisms such as a cool organ rendition of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord." Originally released as a double LP in 1972, Amazing Grace cracked the Billboard Top 10 on its release, making it one of the best selling gospel records of all time. Grace was recorded in a large Baptist church with an ultraenthusiastic audience in the pews, a full, funky band, and the Southern California Community Choir under the direction of Franklin's mentor, Cleveland. Her voice is melismatic and intensely emotional, yet pure and controlled, as if she is channeling the Holy Ghost. Franklin's father, the brilliant preacher Reverend C.L. Franklin, makes a brief, proud appearance, remarking, "She has never left the church!" Other highlights include the beautiful "Wholy Holy," an 11-minute, heart-stopping "Amazing Grace," and Inez Andrews's stirring "Mary, Don't You Weep." Way more than a return-to-the-roots record, this set is an inspired gospel-soul workout that arguably showcases Franklin's strongest singing ever. --Mike McGonigal

THE CD OVERALL IS OKAY, BUT I SHOULD HAVE RETURNED IT BUT MY DAUGHTER LOVE IT SO WELL, I AM NOT REALLY HAPPY WITH IT BUT I CAN LIVE WITH IT.

5 out of 5 stars A Revelation.......2006-12-10

Amazing Grace is widely acknowledged to be Aretha Franklin's magnum opus. With her 1972 return to gospel roots, she evolved from "Queen of Soul" to "The Queen." As her father, Reverend Franklin, notes to a rapt audience during one of the two night performances: "she can sing anything." This isn't filial boasting; it's an understatement. Recorded in a large Baptist church with the Southern California Community Choir, Aretha belts her way through traditional hymns, standards and pop tunes alike--and in the process redefines them. Her overall performance is a revelation. Period.

If praising Amazing Grace is needlessly redundant, the Rhino reissue itself is worth discussing. For those accustomed to the orginal record, be prepared for some changes. In the spirit of preserving the integrity of the event, the producers have reproduced both night's performance in their near entirety. Vocal overdubs peppered judiciously throughout the original release have been removed in favor of celebrating the imperfect but more immediate live setting. Thus, "Old Landmark" and "How I Got Over" sound noticeably rougher, though more authentic, than their studio-enhanced counterparts.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2006-11-09

This cd is timeless- If you love Aretha you must own this cd

5 out of 5 stars A treat.......2006-09-19

This is a remastered version of Aretha Franklin's breakthrough 1972 gospel album AMAZING GRACE. This was recorded in front of a live audience in 1972, culled from two live performances with the Southern California Community Choir, Ken Lupper, and the Rev. James Cleveland at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. This two disc set features the original 14 tracks, and a bonus 15, making it 29 tracks in total. It is great to hear the music unedited! This is a must have for Aretha's big fans!

5 out of 5 stars I Love Aretha!.......2006-03-18

This is one of the best gospel compliations I have heard. I love the combination of Aretha Franklin and the choir and Rev. James Cleveland.

It's well known that Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice cut their teeth on Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat before shifting to the New Testament and hitting the big time with Jesus Christ Superstar. And thanks to the box-office clout of Lloyd Webber, as well as the rather sparse supply of new tuneful musicals, this charming little show has reached audiences far beyond the schoolchildren it was intended for. The score shows off Rice's clever lyrics and Lloyd Webber's wide eclectic tastes, with his takes on country, calypso, French café music, Rudy Vallee, and Elvis. The show also includes some simply very fine songs, including "You Are What You Feel/Jacob and Sons," "Close Every Door," and the peppy "Go Go Joseph." Leading the 1982 Broadway cast is the enormously appealing Laurie Beechman in the role of the narrator. Joseph has been subsequently revived in bigger, bolder incarnations starring Donny Osmond and then Sam Harris, presumably to justify a big ticket price for what at heart remains a small-scale show--proof that you don't always get what you pay for. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Webber's First Work Becomes a Star.......2007-06-27

When I was 16 years old, a friend overheard me saying how popular "Joseph" was among my peers. She sent me a cassette tape of the 1982 Broadway cast and I was quickly hooked over the summer.

A silly campy bit of fun? No doubt. But for a short easy musical, "Joseph" has gone far with the fans. With quick catchy lyrics and a comical score, the show still remains a favorite to schools and community centers performing it around the world. The Biblical story has appealed to the spiritually interested too. ("Joseph" was originally scripted and performed in the early 70's of renewed interest in religion.)

Here is the renowned tale of Joseph, Jacob's favorite son, who is sold down to Egypt by his jealous brothers and ends up rising to great power. Notwithstanding the (minor) biblical inaccuracies, the addictive soundtrack is told in a multicolored tapestry of vibrant song and dance including ragtime, Western, rock, and calypso.

The Canadian version of "Joseph" with its techno-pop soundtrack and starring Donny Osmond is the most popular one and perhaps the most likeable with kids. But this 1982 version hits closer to home. For example, the prologue tune is soft and sweet with flute music that plays carefully into "Jacob and Sons" and then quickly picks up with the percussion and a lively chorus. This folk-reminiscent version of "Joseph" might be easier on the ears than the louder candied Canadian version.

Bill Hutton is an adequate Joseph and I enjoyed his version of "Close Every Door" very much. But it is Laurie Beechman, the narrator, who carries the show with her voice and her heart. She does not strain herself with a high pitched squeal. We hear her voice loud and clear: deep, throaty, strong, and soulful. It is her talent that made me enjoy the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber so much. While some might call "Joseph" his trial-and-error piece before Webber created the smash hits of "Phantom", "Cats", and "Evita", the die-hard fans know that it all began with one cleverly told story "about a boy whose dreams came true...and he could be you".

5 out of 5 stars Who knew the Bible was so much fun?.......2007-05-24

I was introduced to this musical years before the original Broadway production, through a frantic (but remarkably good) production put on by my high school, featuring the inimitable Katie Puckrik, later the host of TV's "Pajama Party", among other gigs-- so I have always had a soft spot for it. It is a lightweight but thoroughly enjoyable show, full of clever, memorable songs.

As for this version, I just bought it, after having previously listened only to the original 1973 London studio cast recording, which was not from a stage production. A few tweaks were made to the show after that first recording. (I have not heard any of the other versions from stage productions.) This one has a bigger, fuller, rather more professional sound. Laurie Beechman has a juggernaut voice, although she comes in so far behind the beat so many times that I found myself wishing she had a few other interpretive tricks in her bag. I would describe the studio recording as somewhat looser, more relaxed, less ambitious and more intimate. There are certain aspects to the arrangements and performances of the songs on the studio recording that I prefer right now, but I must say that this Broadway version is still new to me, and I carry the baggage of years of the studio recording being crystalized in my mind. So I like it, although that recording seems to get scant support these days.

In any case, if you have no recording of "Joseph", it is sure to bring a smile to your face, and I can recommend this Broadway version.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-05-07

This is a great soundtrack. Probably my favorite musical ever. I would highly recommend it for any music lover. And if you haven't seen the play you really must. The great thing about the soundtrack is that you can follow the whole story because nearly 100% of the play is song. There is virtually no dialogue.

5 out of 5 stars the best version there is!.......2007-02-11

i have listened to every cast recording of this show that is available, and by far this is the only one that DOESN'T suck.. if you are thinking of buying this musical.. this is the version you should choose!

Substitute grits for glitz, soul for sheen, and wry humor for mythic self-regard, and the Amazing Rhythm Aces could have been the Eagles. Though they didn't fly as high commercially, the Aces' blend of rock, country, down-home rhythm & blues, and even gospel continues to satisfy on this combo reissue of the band's first two mid-'70s albums. "Third Rate Romance" remains the Memphis band's signature song and major pop hit, while "The End Is Not in Sight (The Cowboy Tune)" anticipated the changes in commercial country a couple of decades down the road. Rhythm aside, the key to the band's appeal is frontman Russell Smith, whose songs and singing transcend musical boundaries with amazing grace. --Don McLeese

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars spiritual americana.......2007-01-06

I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!

5 out of 5 stars Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Superb .......2006-08-07

This collection of American Christian music is not only an enthralling musical experience but a spiritually uplifting one as well. Anonymous Four have transferred their luminous vocal quality to a new space with perfect success.

5 out of 5 stars Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.

These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars Mana from Heaven.......2006-05-08

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

Did you know that Elvis Presley's four Grammy nominations (and two wins) for "Best Sacred or Inspirational Performance" were his ONLY Grammy nominations? Yes, it's true. Elvis' gospel recordings are among his most heartfelt performances. This two CD collection features all the songs from the Peace in the Valley EP, the His Hand in Mind LP, the How Great Thou Art LP, the He Touched Me album and most of his other gospel recordings; including a previously unreleased jam session between Elvis and the Stamps, which was filmed for the documentary Elvis On Tour. Great stuff, but I would recommend getting the three CD collection called Peace in the Valley: The Complete Gospel Recordings. That collection has everything from this collection, plus: the gospel songs from the Million Dollar Quartet jam session, several home recordings, four songs from Elvis movies, "Peace in the Valley" live on the Ed Sullivan Show, "Who Am I?", "Life", "I Got a Feelin' in My Body", two songs from Las Vegas rehearsals, the live version of "Help Me", the "Gospel Medley" from the 1968 Comeback Special, an off-the-cuff performance of "The Lord's Prayer" and the live version of "How Great Thou Art" from the Elvis in Concert television special. Whew! But if you don't want those songs, this collection will be good enough for you.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING GRACE: ELVIS SACRED PERFORMANCES.......2007-01-09

I loved all of Elvis's music; however, this is the most moving music I HAVE EVER HEARD. When he sings How Great Thou Art -- there isn't any artist that could come close to performing the song as he does. He is magnificient.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace.......2007-01-05

I didn't know whether I'd like "religious music" by Elvis, I'd only heard his movie tunes & of course the songs we all know - Hound Dog, etc. I bought this while persuing my personal religious journey, I like Elvis, figured this would be okay to get inspired with. Whoah!!! Elvis usually takes a song makes it his own, sometimes you don't recognize it. He doesn't do that with sacred music. What he does do is enter the Kingdom through song. He sings with intensity, longing & you do not doubt his own religious conviction. I especially love the gospel tunes of his southern upbringing. My favorite songs are Milky White Way & Lead Me, Guide Me. This is a lot of music on 2 cd's, well worth the money.

Tennessee Ernie Ford's warm, commanding baritone lives on most dramatically in his vivid rendition of the Merle Travis-penned coal miner's song "Sixteen Tons," which topped the national charts in 1955. But by the 1960s, Ford, a leading entertainer in his time and host of an NBC-TV variety show that ran from 1956 to 1961, had turned heavily to sacred music. By the time of his death in 1991, he'd recorded no fewer than 81 albums of gospel and spiritual music. Some of Ford's most memorable hymns are collected in this ample set, which includes both the familiar ("How Great Thou Art," "Rock of Ages") and the relatively obscure ("When God Dips His Pen of Love in My Heart," "Blessed Assurance"). Across the years, Ford's voice continues to echo with heartfelt earnestness and warm reassurance that soothes the soul and transcends the test of time as he magnificently makes these gospel masterpieces his own. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars Good Old-Time Gospel Music.......2007-05-05

Tennessee Ernie Ford is one of my favorite baritone singers. This collextion is derived and put together by Bill Gaither and his production staff. T.E.F. had the smoothest voice in early country and gospel music. If you like old-time gospel, you will like this CD.

My husband started me on the hunt for this rare edition of TEF gospel hymns. I surprised him with it and he immediately put it in the cd player. It is totally awesome. He practically listens to it every evening. It is indeed one of his most prized possessions.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Better.......2007-01-16

A wonderful simple mix of arrangements and genre....some traditional classics, bluegrass and spirituals....and on many selections Ernie invites a quartet or more of other singers to join him. I miss Ernie Ford...a magnificent, underrated talent [even in his heyday]. A charming host who was unafraid to declare his homage to the Almighty at the close of each performance.

5 out of 5 stars One of Ernie Ford's BEST.......2007-01-10

This was a Great album on records and an outstanding job was performed in the "CD"conversion. In my opinion, Ernie Ford was one of the finest Gospel Singers of the twentieth century.

4 out of 5 stars Music we all need to hear once in a while........2007-01-04

This album is well put together and I enjoy the old standards. Music is an integral part of our heritage. Often when I listen to this album, I think about what our country has been through and how very, very important it is to appreciate what we have. I spent 3 years living in France in the 60's and I cannot tell you how much all Americans looked forward to going "Home!"

Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars A very good CD.......2005-06-16

If you like a mix of songs and marches very well played, this CD is for you. The voices of the singers are good, the music support the lyrics and it is easy to listen or to sing along. Also, nearby half of the tunes are played by the Band of the Grenadier Guards and for me, this Band is the best band to play Sousa marches and military marches. The precision of the execution is perfect, the sound is lovely and the technical quality of the recording is perfect. When I listen Anchors Aweigh, I always hear the sound of the waves and it is one of the only bands that gives me this feeling. If you have just one CD of military music to buy, you may buy this one; it is a best buy.

3 out of 5 stars Revision of history.......2005-03-27

As usual, "Dixie," "The Bonnie Blue Flag," and other songs of a Southern genre are conspicuously absent. Why not throw in a couple of rap tunes to make this album truly "American?"

5 out of 5 stars Lovely CD--shameful misspelling on the song titles.......2002-11-22

I do not own this CD--though it appears it would be a wonderful album to listen to. I was compelled to write my review because of the misspelling of our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner (as opposed to "The Star Bangled Banner" as it appears not once but twice on the song list). I do hope this error is corrected.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Patriotic Album.......2002-07-20

For all those patriots out there who want to listen to classical patriotic music, then get this album. This has a lot of tracks from yankee doodle march to the Washington post march. Even Amazing grace is here. The orchestras and the chorus here, gave there best performance ever.

Enjoy

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Martina's why I bought it.......2007-05-14

And her rendition of "How Great Thou Art" is worth the price of the CD to me. I have mixed feelings about the rest of it. I didn't care much for most of the male voices. While they are sensitive and thoughtful and generally reverent, which I do appreciate, I still prefer more traditional, resonant, powerful male voices, such as Alan Jackson's on his gospel CD. I will listen to this one occasionally, if only to hear Martina, but Precious Memories is still my favorite.

4 out of 5 stars Why are so many "inspired by" recordings not truly inspired by the source material?.......2007-04-07

I wonder why so many "inspired by" recordings are not produced in response to the material that supposedly serves as the basis for their inspiration. In the case of movies, why not let the artists view the film prior to its release, and let them craft songs built around scenes, themes or the ideas presented. There may be some reason why this isn't done--it may be hard to write enough original songs, or maybe it's difficult to let the artists see a film prior to its release. If the problem is the latter, why couldn't those contributing songs be given something in written form? It may not be as inspiring, but it at least provides a starting point for creating a song.

This is not to knock Music Inspired by the Motion Picture Amazing Grace. It's a fine collection of hymns by a variety of talented artists. It seems a shame though that only the song "Amazing Grace" performed by Chris Tomlin has any direct connection with the movie. John Newton, the author of the hymn, had a relationship with the key figure in the film, William Wilberforce.

Tomlin does what many of the artists do with these hymns, and a little more. In addition to a different arrangement, he takes the risk of adding some new verses to a classic song, and pulls it off admirably. Nichole Nordeman does the same with equally impressive results on "Just As I Am." Tomlin's subdued playing and instrumentation reinvents and adds a touch of grace to one of the most popular songs of all time.

Jeremy Camp's strong masculine voice is the perfect complement for music that thunders around the verses of "It Is Well." It's a strong performance augmented by the background vocals of his wife Adie.

This is one of several remarkable duets, the next featuring Shawn McDonald & Bethany Dillon on "All Creatures of Our God & King." It starts off with an ethereal vibe but the vocals get a little cluttered with the programming that ends the song. Another song that suffers from programming is "Fairest Lord Jesus" by Natalie Grant.

It's a challenge for artists to take such familiar songs and make them sound fresh. For the most part, these interpretations succeed in making these hymns sound new. The best results here are the songs that are acoustic and less complicated like the title song.

Another brilliant example is "Rock of Ages" by David Crowder & Marty Stuart. It begins and ends with a delightful acoustic instrumental that sounds like some wonderful Christmas recording. David Crowder continues to record impressive music.

The medley "My Jesus I Love Thee / `Tis So Sweet" by Bart Millard (of Mercy Me) starts and ends with the sounds of an accordion. The music is a relaxed blend of contemporary and pop sounds. Though the title of the song does not show this as a duet, the voice of Derek Webb is unmistakable. He is a great addition to one of the best songs on the recording.

A light country version of "How Great Thou Art" by Martina McBride is also excellent and closes the recording.

Two black gospel songs are included, but with orchestration and more production, they don't fit as well with the many songs that lean toward acoustic pop or rock. They are well done and they do add variety, but like the songs that make use of programming, they feel a little out of place.

This is a strong collection of hymns done in a contemporary style. It won't appeal as much to those who favor more traditional renderings.

2 out of 5 stars Wimpy, wimpy, wimpy!.......2007-04-06

With the exception of the first and last tracks ("Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art"), I would have to say that the balance of the songs on this CD are limp and unenthusiastic....better to go right to iTunes or some other music download site and just get those two tracks!!

I think the CD was made with good intent, but unless you want something to fall asleep to, this album doesn't seem to reflect any of the joy or enthusiasm that I associate with Christian music or Christianity itself. Perhaps it was just that the songs were sung "quietly", but I did not find them to be infused with much in the way of "inspiration", and I got none from listening to them.......

Far better, I think, to go buy something like the soundtrack to the actual movie "Amazing Grace", which contains beautiful and atmospheric compositions, and which deserves to be nominated for an Academy award....

Another option would be to buy the soundrack to either of the "Sister Act" movies (in addition to my suggestion in the preceding paragraph), they are much more lively, joyful, celebratory and creative than this!

Any of those options will leave you more uplifted and inspired than this CD left me...I absolutely LOVED "Amazing Grace", and would strongly urge anyone looking for a GOOD movie to see the film that "inspired the music" on this CD.

Seeing the actual film will leave you feeling inspired and hopeful; that good men can still accomplish great things, no matter how many people are on the "other side" of what they are working against!!

[Hint: I understand that that WONDERFUL rendition of "Amazing Grace" with the bagpipes, drums and other instruments that plays at the end of the movie is available on iTunes as a "bonus track", and it is DEFINITELY NOT TO BE MISSED!!!]

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and beautiful.......2007-03-29

I bought this CD after hearing the updated version of Amazing Grace, the title and theme song for the movie. WOW - I was so impressed that a classic hymn could be modernized without losing it's impace and simplicity. I had doubts about the rest of the songs, but was soooo wrong - happily!) All the songs on this CD are beautiful - classic hymns, updated beautifully. Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars AMAZING CD!! .......2007-03-27

Great traditional songs I know by artists I love!! Only downfall is the original version of "Amazing Grace" isnt on the CD, only Chris Tomlin's amazing version..
