There is a basic formula in making a successful children's music CD: it's gotta be cool enough for the kids while staying tolerable enough to withstand repeated listens by the parent. Songs 4 Worship Kids: Awesome God passes the test and is a worthwhile buy for any parent seeking to expose their child to safe and quality music. Well recorded and arranged, the CD offers standard contemporary worship fare like "Give Thanks," "Change My Heart, O God," "More Precious Than Silver," and "Thy Word." The release also features a creative reworking of Rich Mullins's "Awesome God," intersplicing choruses with Bible verses read by the children artists. "Jesus Sees" is another track that will speak to children in their own voice and language. The upbeat "Every Move I Make" is also a winner. There are a few dull moments that fall flat, like the too-adult "Open the Eyes of My Heart." But for the most part, parents will be relieved to know that the CD is lively enough to keep kids' interest before they start wanting the latest Britney Spears, N'Sync, or Nelly release. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars Fun, playful, and engaging.......2006-10-23

I first heard this cd when I walked into our living room one afternoon and saw my wife and our two children practicing the hand gestures and dance steps for Every Move I Make. My wife had learned them at VBS and was teaching them to the kids. They were having laughing together, playing joyfully and having great fun. Since then I've listened to this CD many times and really enjoy it. Every Move I Make is my wifes favorite, I like Open the Eyes of My Heart Lord, my daughter likes Hallelujah Heart, and my son likes too many to list.

This cd will hook your kids, and you, in for an upbeat, uplifting and utterly enjoyable musical experience. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome indeed!.......2007-02-03

I bought this album on iTunes a couple of months ago and loved it. I stumbled on it by accident, while searching for a rendition of "Awesome God." I'm glad I found it, because this is one of the best sacred acapella recordings I've ever listened to.

Amazon does not provide this information, but the choir on this CD is conducted by Keith Lancaster. He does an amazing job. The sound is very clear and vibrant. As a singer myself, I think the choir does a great job of having a clear "forward" sound without sounding nasal. In addition, the blend between the men and women is just right. The first track is an excellent acapella rendition of the popular worship song "Awesome God," and is my personal favorite on this CD. Some of my other favorites are "Give Thanks to the Lord," "We Trust in the Name of the Lord Our God," "My Life Is In You," "That's Why We Praise Him." One other noteworthy thing about this recording: the way the track changes are edited, it doesn't sound like the choir ever stops singing; it sounds like they recorded everything in one take. I don't know if this actually happened or if it's just the result of clever editing, but it sounds great! In conclusion, this is a must-own for sacred acapella fans. 5 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome God.......2006-10-19

The inspirational music--sung a capella--incudes upbeat praise songs as well as moving songs of worship. Singing along with it is an uplifting experience. Mine is a 2CD set, in which the 2nd CD is recorded so that by tuning the speakers to one side or the other the different parts (alto, tenor, soprano, & bass)can be heard more clearly--this helps to learn individual parts since on the main CD the harmonizing is so smooth that it can be challenging to pick out the parts.

Although the songs are not children's songs per se, my little girl has several favorites (her most favorite is the title song) and I have used some of the songs as a springboard for discussion of topics from God's protection to obedience.

I've enjoyed singing along with this CD with both teens and adults, in the car and in a congregational group.

My favorites are "Hide Me Away, O Lord" and "Open the Eyes of my Heart".

3 out of 5 stars My View Review.......2004-04-16

I felt the CD has some beautiful songs. I just feel that he should try to appeal to more than just 16-24. Some people are a little more traditional. He made no attempt to communicate with those of use who have been in church since child hood. True enough I am 28 and I do like contemporary urban gospel. He came really close with 'Uh Uh Peace'. The entire cd is wonderful I just believe that he should want to touch more than just one generation. For example: an a capella spiritual, a traditional sunday morning song with a foot stompin' hand clappin' feel of his own original words, maybe a country gospel toon. I just feel like he has boxed himself in to one avenue. I don't see the creativity.

Make no mistake, I love the CD. I listen to it regularly.

5 out of 5 stars Loving Greg O'quin's title cut "Unh-Unh".......2003-05-08

If you don't have this CD, then you should get it in a hurry. I heard one cut ( title: Unh-Unh) and fell in love with it, then I bought the whole CD, and it is "AWESOME", (One of the cuts on this CD). This is definitely by far the best I have heard from Greg O'quin. As long as he (Mr. O'quin) keeps telling the storm, everything is going to be great. God has really worked in you with this project. It is rejoicing to my soul everytime I hear it (everyday, all-day). GOD IS "EVERYTHING" (another cut).

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect CD If Your Going Through A Storm.......2003-01-10

thiz cd is wonderful and it will minister to your soul if you are going through a storm because the songs help you get through your storm. the song Unh-unh! and I told the storm tells you what to tell your storm. I really liked the interludes and Greg's storm because he is real with what was going on in his life and how he made it through his storms because "my God surrounds us"

      5 out of 5 stars Anointed.......2002-06-06

Saints let me tell ya. When I first got the cd I was a pretty big O'quin fan. But when I put the cd in I got to the first couple of songs and judged them by the beat so I did what most people probably did and fast-forwarded to "I told the Storm (Remix)". Well I gave the cd another chance the next day at work and as I have been going through some thing I was praying and the Lord opened my ears and heart to "Awesome", "Unh-Unh!" and "I told the Storm" the Spirit began to sit in and minister to me. A word is what I receive (present tense) when I listen to it.
For anyone that's going through you need this cd for anyone that's not you need this cd b/c we all have storms come in our lifes.

      5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2001-09-17

This CD is in the stores now - great CD - if you have the opportunity to pick this one up - you will love it - not saying that because - it is awesome. Shouts out to James Pickney a member of Greg O'Quin and Joyful Noyze and a member of Pleasant Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.

One of contemporary Christian music's most beloved songwriters and performers, Rich Mullins left behind an important body of work. His untimely death in late 1997 shocked fans and brought peers to their knees, knowing that while Mullins now resides in a better place, his presence would be profoundly and deeply missed. Awesome God is infused with the emotion and heartbreak felt by his contemporaries as they strive to honor him on this special tribute. Carolyn Arends's direct delivery of "Jacob and Two Women" is wrenching, while Kevin Max turns "Save Me" into an intriguing ambient postrock anthem. Michael W. Smith gives a powerful and uncharacteristically gritty take on Mullins's signature "Awesome God" and Billy Sprague's chunky, distorted loops on "A Place to Stand" recall the production of Daniel Lanois. Younger bands Jars of Clay and Caedman's Call hold forth with acoustic versions of "If I Stand" and "Step by Step," the latter being the closing tribute to a dear friend and mentor. --Paige La Grone

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great songs weakly performed.......2005-01-13

For a tribute album to be good art on its own, it should consist of artists pretending other songs are their own...living and breathing the lyric through their own sensibilities. It should NOT be a carbon-copy of the original artist down to the arrangement, way it's sung, style, etc...otherwise, why not just listen to the original? (Perhaps Reed Arvin, longtime producer for Rich, and producer of this comp says it best: "This recording is not about Rich Mullins; it's about his songs.") Unfortunately, it appears that was lost in the making of this CD.

Michael W. Smith began promisingly, by stripping back "Awesome God" to its piano base and keeping it spare. But he missteps by swelling it to the anthemic "big choir" sound that Mullins has already used. The song would be better served by keeping it "small" musically, and letting the lyrics be the "big" part of the song...

These types of things occur again and again throughout the CD...fairly unimaginative arrangements hewing way too close to Rich's to be interesting. In large part, most of this fails because of the artist's fear or inability to reinterpret Rich's material.

Most successful is Kevin Max, who takes a song I considered one of Mullins' weaker efforts ("Save Me" from his major label debut...) and COMPLETELY reinvents it sonically as a multilayered Bono-esque diatribe against superficiality. It gave me new appreciation for the song.

Gary Chapman recrafts "Elijah" as a country tune and invests passion into his vocals. (And for the reviewer who mentioned the 'rambling' story by Chapman in the liners...it's him saying in a nutshell that the opinions of God, not other frail human beings, are what counts...and that Rich lived his life in a way that showed Gary he understood that...I found his words touching.)

Other nice touches are Carolyn Arends' phrasing on one of Rich's best songs "Jacob and 2 Women"...lending extra weight to the portions told from the women's point of view...I love how this song pastes together the majesty and the mystery in God's Word. Also good are Billy Sprague's arrangement on "A Place to Stand" providing a view of a man beaten down and choosing to hope in spite of it and Ashley Cleveland's "I See You" depicting Moses as resigned to a tough calling leading the Jews to the promised land. But these moments are too few to call this a quality tribute. Sorry, Rich...maybe someone else will do this better.

      4 out of 5 stars Uneven Tribute.......2002-02-21

This CD came as a result of the death of one of Christian music's best artists, Rich Mullins. His friends put this together as a tribute. Each artist picked a song that had ministered to them, then covered it, incorporating their own personal touches along the way.

Some of the covers are wonderful. The piano arrangement that starts the CD is a wonderful intro to "Awesome God." Carolyn Arrends does a great job on "Jacob and 2 Women," and Chris Rice is the perfect fit for "Calling Out Your Name." Even Jars of Clay and Caedmon's Call, two bands I'm not a fan of, do a good job on their songs. However, Kevin Max and Ashley Cleveland changed their songs two much. Rich Mullins was not a rock singer, and trying to make his songs sound rock ruins them.

Rich Mullins' fans will enjoy seeing how some of the top CCM artists envisioned these songs. Even with the couple missteps mentioned above, it's the next best thing to having a new album from Rich himself.

      1 out of 5 stars evil.......2001-03-29

these album is idolatry towards Rich Mullins whoever came up with idea will find his place in hell!

2 out of 5 stars What kind of tribute did you have in mind?.......2000-12-20

This is a disappointing album in the same way that The Jesus Record was. Ultimately, Rich's own distinctive voice and phrasing said as much about his beliefs and his passion for every word he wrote as the literal meaning of the words themselves. It is amazing how much less impact each song has through another person's interpretation. With The Jesus Record we didn't have much choice: in order to get a quality recording it had to be redone. But what is the point here? Each of these songs already exists in high-quality Mullins recordings. The tribute is the equivalent of saying, "We know that your particular voice and phrasing is not marketable to some of the mass of Christian blandness, but we'll fix it." It is an insult to Rich's artistic direction. A better tribute would have been for these artists to reflect on the themes of Rich's life with orginal works, honoring his distinctive voice with their own artistic visions.

      5 out of 5 stars Extremely Moving.......2000-07-02

This cd is absolutely amazing, and if you feel like using a cassette, i'm sure its just as good. Anyways, words cannot describe what these songs do for me. the most amazing song on the cd is "if i stand" that jars of clay sang. an awesome version of the song by rich. if you happen to have napster, go download this tribute, and you will be sold for the whole cd.
