I wish I could find "Keep No Secrets" - we wore our copy out. It was the best!

4 out of 5 stars been hearing his music for years... never knew it........2001-06-24

When the only album available for an artist is a Best-of album, one wonders what happened to the other albums from which these were compiled... i'm still asking that question, especially after making this the most-listened-to selection in my collection. i found this album while trying to locate a song i heard on the radio... still have not found it, but after hearing this, i want to find more music from Morgan Cryar.

The 2 new (previously unrecorded) cuts included in this collection are certainly good and in good company. 'Cool of the Day' is a catchy song that makes me long to be able to take my 'rightful' (only as a child of His) place and walk with Him in the cool of the day, every day... But even more impressive is the 'Meet Your Maker' cut! It is an up-beat reminder that sooner or later, we will all meet our maker... whether or not we acknowledge His existence... but more, it's an invitation to those who don't know Him. Because of this, it has become the song of my heart ("Come with me, let me introduce you...")

But it was the title cut 'What Sin' that really sold me on Morgan's music. This is something i can sing (in the shower, in the car, or even at church) and is a reminder of the awesome forgiveness offered by a God who knows everything about us and still loves us. It is a guilt-lifting ballad and it worth the price of the ablum by itself.

Other fav's that caught my ear include (you can still) `Pray in the USA', `If I Never See a Miracle', `Strength of the Weak', `Kingdom Upside Down', and the ever-convicting `My Old Friends'. But lest I get `Carried Away' with my words, let me leave you with an invitation to listen to Morgan's. Because his music is in what I would call soft rock, the lyrics (and message) are clear. I highly recommend that you add this album to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars The song " What sin?" is so very anointed and beautiful........1999-11-02

We are using the song "What Sin?" in our Post Abortion Bible study. We feel it has God's healing hand all over it.

4 out of 5 stars So glad I finally found It!.......1999-08-14

HAd been looking for "Pray in the USA" for months I think that one song is powerful and will add so much to the application of Daniel ch 6. to our lives as Christians in basically a pagan culture. Reminds me of the Keith Green exhortation type music I have missed. share the message of this CD with all the christians who need motivation to PRAY!

3 out of 5 stars Mellow rocker rides the fence on breaking new ground........1998-12-31

A career of innocuous "hit" singles makes for an innocuous "best of" album. Still, the inclusion of earlier butt-kickers like the militant "Pray in the USA" and dance rock "Carried Away" make this collection worthy of purchase, especially since those tunes cannot be found anywhere else on CD. And the title track is a classic heart-wrencher that will never lose its impact or freshness. Two new tracks add a little more depth to the collection, particularly "Cool of the Day" which sounds very much like it could have been released by the Wonders from the movie, "That Thing You Do". Morgan Cryar has a great rock and roll voice, but plays it safe in the studio rather than taking risks and testing his limits. Consequently, this compilation is a good listen, but not a compelling one.

4 out of 5 stars Gets better the more you listen to it.......2007-03-09

It's nice to see that Big Country drifted away from their "Crossing/Steeltown/Seer" type of sound and ended up evolving in lots of different ways. I love the classic material and those other albums are among my favorite cds. This one took me a few additional listenings to really get into. "Fragile Thing" and "Perfect World" really started to stand out to me over time (and especially after seeing the videos). Great album and excellent if you liked Big Country in the 80s and want to see how they evolved without ever really "selling out".

5 out of 5 stars 'Desert Island Disc' pertinent! Incredible and moving!.......2005-02-16

It is especially poignant and sad to have to listen to this overlooked masterpiece given the untimely and sudden sad ending to the great Stuart Adamson's life. I guess in the end, no matter how talented and loved you may be, personal demons can snatch you from this earth. I can't pretend to know Stu's mind and what was going through it. That said, this release is a helluva 'swansong' for the band. It is truly an example of 'best of the best' melodic songwriting prowess and passionate vocals, and I try and celebrate and honor the band's musical contributions when I listen to this magnificent CD. The songs are tight, passionate, and hooky! As excellent as Big Country was previous to 'Driving To Damascus', they really 'took it to the next level' with this one. Please do yourselves a favor and get your hands on this one... it's THAT GOOD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, beautiful, and sad.......2003-05-20

I'm rediscovering Stuart Adamson and Big Country after many years of having forgotten them. As brilliant and unique as The Crossing was, it seems that Adamson was really just getting rolling artistically when he decided life wasn't worth living. The last project he worked on, The Raphaels, yielded a fabulous debut.

But the final Big Country recording, Driving to Damascus, is just stunning. It retains the best qualities BC and Adamson always possessed: fabulous playing, unique sounds and song structures, and poetic lyrics. But it's all distilled into a ferociously powerful and seemless package.

The influence of Nashville on Adamson results in a couple of great songs that sound nothing like anything BC has done before ("See You" and "Fragile Thing" in particular). Two collaborations with Ray Davies work beautifully ("Somebody Else" and "The Devil in the Eye"). And the rockers should be rocking arenas everywhere (especially the stunning "Dive into Me").

I find all this late work by Adamson enormously moving. In "Dive into Me" he sings, "Sometimes swirling waters drag you down/Knowing how to swim doesn't mean you never drown/Come the storm you hold in fear whoever's by your side/Sometimes you're just drifting on the tide." If that doesn't rip you up, you need therapy.

4 out of 5 stars bury me where the rose is sown.......2001-12-31

Unfotunately, Stuart Adamson took his own life and this album is the last Big Country recording he gave it his all to. What is most evident is the influence of his new home, Nashville, on the sound. Instead of a blast of Scotland, we get a much more country feel, which is fine. Fragile Thing is one of the finest songs recorded by this band. This album is a fine swan song.

5 out of 5 stars Best BC Album in Years!.......2000-12-12

If you have forgotten how good Big Country are/were, pull up a chair, put this in the CD player and turn up the volume.

Driving to Damascus is full of strong material from the eponymous opening track to the haunting 'Your Spirit to Me' (Think of 'One' by U2, but better). The songwriting is undoubtedly influenced by Stuart Adamson's domicile in the USA, as it has been since the 'No Place Like Home' album, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. 'The President Slipped and Fell' is a barnstorming track and surely deserved major radio airplay and 'John Wayne's Dream' should have made the original cut for the album.

This album is notable for some perfect collaborations, firstly Stuart and Ray Davies 'Somebody Else', an excellent track with too much passion about a messy break-up, not to have some bearing in truth. The second interesting duo is Stuart and Eddi Reader, who provides sympathetic harmony on 'Fragile Thing.'

There are a few surprises, notably 'See You', which had me checking the CD to make sure it was really Big Country. I turned it off on first hearing, but it grows on you.

'Dive Into Me' is more typical of BC anthem rock, although the live version on the 'Come Up Screaming' album puts this recording in the shade.

I guess that with the departure of bass player extraordinaire, Tony Butler and Ian Grant throwing in the managerial towel, this is the end of the road for Big Country. It is fitting for a band that produced so much good album rock, they should come up with this gem as a swansong.

4 out of 5 stars Newpop Excitement!.......2001-11-08

Yazbek's art is bright, shiny powerpop with dabs of jazz here and there. Damascus is tighter than Tock and almost as good as his brilliant debut The Laughing Man. I love to hear a mature artist who knows how to use all the tools of great songwriting.

If you're a fan of thoughtful, intelligent music by the likes of new XTC (Mummer through Apple Venus 2), Matthew Sweet, Jason Falkner, or Sting then Damascus is for you.

Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars The Talented Mr. Yazbek.......2001-10-10

There is a genius out there by the memorable name of David Yazbek. If you haven't yet heard of him, then you should have. With a Tony nomination for writing the Broadway version of "The Full Monty" under his belt, in addition to his history of writing comedy for David Letterman, Mr. Yazbek has been busy juggling successful projects. And this new album is no exception. With "Damascus", Yazbek plays with styles of funk, jazz, swing music, and rock'n roll.

Most of the tunes are clever humor stories, including his personal misadventures in "Montgomery, Alabama" and what happened to him on a "Strange Warm Day". On close inspection of songs like these, the attitude appears sullenly morbid and sad. The same can be said for his fourth track, "Ultrasad", which reminds us, "A little bit of tragedy can give a life the spice." Oddly enough, the songs, when sung with Yazbek's cheerful and spirited singing style, exhibit elements of irony and wit throughout the recordings.

While Yazbek injects comedy into some of his stories of helpless situations, there are other tracks that sparkle with poignant symbolism. "2 Crows" is one such melody about a pair of crows waiting out the pace of life with enthusiastic observation. While it may seem an odd choice of perspective, the lyric "Blind crow bragging about the power of sight" reminds me of tall tales and the predominant use of a phony disposition. "A Million Miles" is another song rich in the use of effective metaphor. Here, Yazbek tells us, "The baby sees the road and starts the journey of a million miles." As the melody continues through the accompaniment of Yazbek's pleasant style of piano playing, we are given additional colorful imagery. A "piano with the yellow on the keys" and "a picture of a man up on the wall" add to the scenery that begin a journey of "A Million Miles".

How else can I explain this album? It's hard and I feel like I can't quite put my typing finger on what it is that makes this album so fun. You're just going to have to give it your own personal test to fully appreciate his manner of cheerful pop and moving imagery.

5 out of 5 stars How do I work this?.......2001-09-05

Oh, I get it. I type in this little window, and the words come out on the screen. Kind of like a flower, only different.

The new Yazbek CD is kind of different. From his first two, that is. First, he slapped me in the face with the power prog-pop of "The Laughing Man." Then, he gave it to me rough with "Tock" (distorted wah-wah clavinet, anyone?), but he knew I wanted it.

Now, he's a cloying Broadway songwriter who wants to convince me that he's still a pop star, so on this new album he's added heaping portions of jazz sensibility to the already poured foundations of strong melody, left-field harmonic structure, occasional odd-time sigs, way-cool horn arrangements, and some of the head-scratchingest lyrics this side of Burkina Faso.

And I like it. You probably will too, if you know what's good for you.

5 out of 5 stars It gave me everything I want......................2001-08-25

I've been making a fool of myself hocking this shiny little package of skillful spew to my friends and coworkers. So far, the average required listening time equals about 30 seconds before they swear up and down that they're gonna buy it. I've never owned anything that was so convincingly consistant (aside from the odd XTC..oh, and Jello pudding). Buy it.... even if you don't deserve it.

The four stars comes from the very soulful sounds of the Nay on this CD. The audio on the Qanun portion of the cut was distorted - my old real player I hope. The nature of a taqasim is lengthy improvisation on a theme but the cuts were too short to really appreciate the artistry of the performers. From what I could hear, I'd be willing to buy the CD.

This is an awesome project done by Randy Thomas (co-writer of Butterfly Kisses) and Andy Denton. This shows just another example of the writing and producing talent that Randy Thomas possess. Each song is finely crafted both lyrically as well as musically, there was no lyrical over embellishment here!

5 out of 5 stars This album rocks!.......2003-11-02

I have this album on cassette that I bought at a local Christian
store a few years back. I was hoping to get at least 2 good songs
from the tape (so it would be worth the $$).
Let's just say I was very surprised to REALLY enjoy every track
they had on it! I was going through some old stuff and found it
again recently. I'm not into CCM anymore, but I played this tape
and just had to stop and listen to it again. I recommend it to
anyone looking for good music w/a positive msg.
Good for those "crossing over" to CCM, like I tried to years ago!

4 out of 5 stars The Best of CCM Roots Rock.......2002-12-16

This may be the best Christian CD you've never heard. I wonder if this album suffered the fate of not being a best seller because of the group's dopey name. What a shame. This is a really good album, possibly one of the best samples of Christian roots-rock. The primary players, Randy Thomas (guitars, BGVs, and production) and Andy Denton (lead vocals) are a couple of CCM's finer musicians, songwriters, and producers.

Personally, I'm shocked Andy Denton hasn't yet hit "the big time", as he's got one of CCM's best voices. (Think a more organic, expressive, less conceited Bob Carlisle. Hear him pull out all the stops while rockin' with his previous group, Legend. Powerful stuff but unfortunately LONG since OOP.) On Identical Strangers, he delivers soulful vocals with urgent intensity on every song. Randy Thomas has always been the quiet man whose involvement with some of CCM's most popular bands (Sweet Comfort Band and Allies) brings his trademark understated musicianship to this project. Nothing Thomas does brings attention to the musician, only to the music.

Stylistically, you might expect to hear these tunes in a hole-in-the-wall Nashville club. There are a number of tracks on this album that are treasures both musically and lyrically. Some very introspective, soul-searching stuff here that will have you considering various aspects of your faith and bringing glory to God at the same time. "Julianna Wilson" is a wonderfully catchy yet thought-provoking tune you may have heard on CCM radio a few years ago, but it's by no means the only great song included.

If you can find this disc for the right price, I'd encourage you to take a chance like I did. You might be pleasantly suprised by these strangers.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!.......1999-08-11

I love the Juliana Wilson song I herd it on the radio and it was really awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful electronic acoustical instrumental music.......2001-11-30

I accidentally stumbled across these two guys in an Ice Cream parlor while on vacation in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. They had just started playing and I sat down with about ten other people and listened all night. They are absolutely fabulous. You can't believe that this much sound comes from two ACOUSTIC guitars. I think they add a bunch of electronics enhacements somehow. I bought their album that night (they both signed it for me). They are really great guys. I watched in fascination as their fingers danced and flew across their guitar strings. They are both virtuousos. It's only a matter of time before their popularity spreads. If you like groups like Tangerine Dream and electronic instrumentals in general, you will love this group.
