Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Release of a two-fer.......2004-11-20

The person who wrote the review below is wrong : the "Alone" album was recorded and released in mono sound, in 1957. "Judy in Love" was Garland's first album recorded and released in stereo, in 1958.

The sound on this disc is spectacular. The original session tapes were used, for the best sound possible. It is glorious sound here, folks.

Pehaps the person that wrote the review below is thinking of the previous two-fer of "Judy in Love" from England, a few years back, paired with the "Judy" album. That CD sounded very flat and dry.

Get this new and improved disc, and you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Finally "Alone" on CD!.......2003-10-01

I just received this Judy "double bill" and I can only say it's GREAT!! "Alone" was always one of my favorite Judy albums, and I am more than pleased to have it on CD now. The sound is not stereo, as another reviewer point out, but it never was recorded in stereo. I have the old vinyl, and that's mono too, but also pretty worn, after all these years. The liner notes actually are pretty good too. The original covers are reproduced, with the original liner notes reprinted, AND some fresh liner notes about this re-issue. There, you can read that the "alone" recordings are from 1957, and that "Judy in Love" is from 1958, and was her first stereo album for Capitol.

So why is "alone" my favorite Judy album? Maybe simply because it was one of my first encounters with Judy, when I was 17 years old. I didn't realize at the time that the selection of songs is pretty unusual. It's not the repertoire she sang a lot in her live and TV shows. I love the mostly subdued pathos on this album, although she does belt it out occasionally, in her own inimitable way. The songs are about 'surviving on your own', and some times about finding your inner strength, in a bittersweet way. The album is not very cheerful, but it does make me feel good, in a sentimental way. The arrangements are very good, just right, in the 'proper' fifties style. The strings have a very warm quality, which wasn't always the case in those days. There is also a beautiful large choir singing in the background on some tracks.
Some of the songs are very unknown, which makes this album special too. Happy New Year, for instance, is a beautiful torch song, written over a very slow version of Old Lang Syne in minor key; a real gem of a song! Blue Prelude is also a great song, so don't be discouraged by the titles you may not know.
All in all, a 'must have' for any Judy fan, but also a wonderful introduction if you want to get acquainted with Judy's singing. "Judy in Love" is an excellent example of her warm joyful singing, while "Alone" gives you all those wonderful torch songs. A balanced package, with a passionate Judy in great voice!!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible sound and terrible packaging.......2003-06-27

Let me rant. This CD has 2 albums on it. 1 is mono and the other stereo!? I have these albums on records and they are both stereo. I feel ripped off. Also, these albums do not sound anywhere like the records in quality. In fact, they sound very boring and lacking of any sort of life. Judy did very big, exciting production numbers and the sound on this CD makes them sound stale and dead. I returned this CD and demanded my money back. The store clerk said I wasn't the only one. Thumbs way down.

5 out of 5 stars JUDY AT HER BEST with SPECTACULAR SOUND!.......2002-05-11

JUDY IN LOVE is perhaps Garland's greatest studio album. A superb collaboration with Judy in wonderful voice, and arranger Nelson Riddle at the top of his form. Inexplicably, this album is only now making its CD debut in the U.S. Capitol Records seemingly had no interest in releasing it themselves, so they've sublicensed it to S&P Records, who have done a terrific mixing and remastering job. Comparing the sound to a recent UK import is overwhelmingly impressive. The UK release sounds mediocre, and this new issue belies its having been recorded 44 years ago.
JUDY IN LOVE is paired with her monaural ballad album ALONE, which was arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins. The two albums together are a distinct contrast and yet only show the versatility and mastery of Garland. The highlight of the ALONE tracks is Jenkins' schmaltzy, yet irresistable I'VE GOT A RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES. ALONE was previously issued on CD by Capitol years ago, but has been long out of print, so this collection is a dream come true for Garland fans.

The 5 Star rating is for the recordings and the way they've been beautifully produced. It does not, however, represent a true rating for the package itself, which has been saddled with awful,
amateurish liner notes which are so poorly written that it's a blatant insult to Garland. What a shame the producers who took such care in creating such a great sounding album, didn't bring the same kind of excellence to the accompanying package. This should not detract anyone from buying this CD, but buyers looking for an interesting commentary on the legendary lady and these specific tracks will have to go elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Garland the Great.......2002-05-02

A beautiful compilation of two classic, original "Judy" albums. These are two of the six studio albums she recorded for Capitol in the fifties, and these are probably the best. While Judy's vocal tone is not at its best on "Judy in Love", the song selections and her interprative genius make up for the slight vocal imperfections. "More Than You Know", "I Am Loved" and "By Myself" are absolute delights, and are clearly definitive versions of these songs. In addition, the ballads shine with passion and tenderness. "Alone" is mostly filled with similarly tender songs, and on this one Garland is in fine, full voice throughout. "Little Girl Blue" is a particular standout, and the addition of the never before released "Then You've Never Been Blue" is a special treat for fans and newcomers. Popular singing doesn't come any better than this.

5 out of 5 stars awesome album.......2007-03-02

I got this cd around 1998 and i didnt know christian music could bee so hip until I heard OOE. The sisters have great haramonizing that shows throughout the CD. My personal favorites are "More Than You Know", "Confused", "Giving my All", and Greater Love". I look forward to hearing more of them in the future.

4 out of 5 stars "More Than You Know".."Get To Heaven".. "Then And Only Then".......2002-01-26

Two years after their fantastic debut, Pop/R&B trio Out Of Eden returned to the music scene with this worthy follow-up, 'More Than You Know'. On this album, the sound, look and feel of the group is different: a little more accessible to pop audiences, yet more sophisticated as well. Although I personally feel that OOE has yet to top their first album in terms of never having to skip a track, not owning this album would be a mistake if you are a fan of their music, and of course, their message.

The album starts off with a bang, and we're quickly introduced to what I consider their best R&B uptempo to date, "More Than You Know". Featuring a groovy bassline, heartfelt lyrics, stylistic synths, (yes there's more) heavenly voices, and a great drum track, "More Than You Know" never fails to fulfill. But most of all, I think that "More Than You Know" would sound amazingly powerful during a live performance. Next up is "Greater Love" which is OOE's foray into the 'Miami bass/So So Def All-Stars' sonic territory, and it works.

"It's Me" is a ballad that reminds me a bit of Brandy's "Almost Doesn't Count" from 1998, which brings me to a point. I've noticed that OOE's music is futuristic in the sense that secular artists seem to imitate OOE's innovation and style sometimes. (Allow me to digress here for a minute). On the drumcapella version of OOE's "Gotee's Groovin" (Lovin The Day - 1994), we hear a simple, yet hypnotic R&B vibe successfully duplicated by Total on "Can't You See", their 1995 hit with the Notorious B.I.G. Coincidence or not, for that reason (among others) I'm a huge fan and admirer of what OOE and Gotee Records are all about -- they are really good at what they do, and they infuse their work with integrity, substance, and a positive message.

Next, we're taken into "It's A Good Time" which has a celebratory, 'nighttime out-on-the-town' feel to it. After this, we hear "You Brought The Sunshine", an update of the original version by the Clark Sisters -- I'm sure this will be a favorite among most listeners. The following cut, "Get It Right" is a decent uptempo with a nice message. After a cute interlude from a very young Joy, we're taken into "Giving My All", a quaint midtempo.

"Confused" is a brooding (and lyrically powerful) track that should reach listeners on many levels. After an adorable Andrea interlude, we're led into "Get To Heaven", a song that sounds like something that easily could have come from 1994's "Lovin The Day". Featuring an ingenious sample of Toto's "Georgie Porgy" (once again, before Eric Benet's 1999 remake), "Get To Heaven" is one of OOE's best fast tracks ever.

"Can't Let Go" is a warm midtempo that fits into the set nicely, but the ballad "Then And Only Then" closes the album in an astonishingly beautiful manner. For the next 14 minutes or so, the listener is then treated to several studio outtakes by the group, and a sermon preached by a very young girl -- most likely an old recording of one of the Kimmey sisters who make up OOE (Lisa, Andrea and Joy/Danielle). In closing, I consider the "More than You Know" album to be a wonderful experience - check it out!

Thanks for reading!

4 out of 5 stars Best Contemporary Gospel CD I've Heard In A While.......2000-05-25

The music is well written and the vocals are quite good. The clips of the children's voices (obviously from a homemade cassette tape) could have been omitted, but overall this was a fantastic CD. If you like this one, you absolutely HAVE to buy the next one -- "No Turning Back". These are absolute "must buys" for people who like hip hop but want a positive Christian message.

5 out of 5 stars they are... more then you know!.......2000-05-23

OOE is such an awseome group! They rock! my friend has this CD(tape) and I listened to it. Well to tell you the truth @ first I didn't think much about it. But now I can't wait to get this CD! I'm getting this one and their newest one. I got their oldest one. IT's cool too! You three girls! Keep it up!

4 out of 5 stars Suprise!.......2000-05-07

This is a pretty darn good CD. I usually don't like R&B, but I own all three of OOE's CDs. This is my favorite one, because of the music. The stuff on here could almost (but not quite) be used for hip hop.

Even though having three sisters who sing together in a group could be a gimmick, these three can all actually sing, and they have beautiful three part harmony (check out "Then and Only Then"). And what sets this album apart is that you can actually listen to the lyrics more than once before actually gathering all the meaning. Unlike most music of this genre, there is some substance behind the songwriting.

Props must be given to the three sisters for their growth and improvement.

4 out of 5 stars Toni was born in the wrong era..........2007-06-23

...she was truly meant to sing this music. I'm a big fan of jazz and swing-era singers, and Tennille can definitely hold her own in this genre. I was never a fan of the Captain and Tennille stuff, but when I heard her sing "More than you know" I was blown away. She may never displace Sarah Vaughan, but she can certainly pull this stuff off.

Another aspect to the first album in this set that makes it remarkable for its time, is that it was recorded live to 2-track. That means very little opportunity for studio gimmickry--they had to nail everything at the same time. I fancy that it gives the album an almost "live" feel, not at all overworked.

And a note about some of the negative reviews--it looks almost as if one individual is, very unethically, posing as several in order to give a multiplicity of bad reviews. Observe the quirky mispelling "emberressing" in the review by "Mr Reiley," and the mispelling "emberressment" in the review by "playboy66". "Voice" is mispelled as "vocie" in both reviews as well. I'm hoping this is just coincidence, but the similarity in grammar and spelling errors between the two reviews is too suspicious not to comment upon.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Album.......2007-06-17

"Mr Reiley" and "Playboy66" below are ONE and the SAME person... Look at the "vocie" misspellings!! Sounds like a 16-year-old, anyway. Toni Tennille's renditions are captivating, as I heard it the other day on KCEA radio out of Palo Alto, CA, and immediately wanted to own a copy of the album. Anyone enthralled by this genre of music would be wise to purchase this album, light some candles on a saturday night, make a nice dinner for someone you love, and put it on the CD player!

5 out of 5 stars Better than brilliant!.......2005-09-12

I have to vehemently disagree with the boneheads below that can't tell talent from a hole in the wall. Miss Tennille does a brilliant job injecting emotion and vitality into these old standards. Her approach to these classics is somewhat like Rosemary Clooney and Ella Fitzgerald but she injects the powerhouse vocals of a Linda Ronstadt. If you like those three singers and have appreciated Toni's voice in the past you will not be disappointed in this recording.

1 out of 5 stars This cd, is no good at all.......2004-05-31

No good cd, not good at all ,boring arrangeemtn bland singijnn, yoni no good a standards

2 out of 5 stars This is a lot of things but certianly NOT brilliant.......2004-05-22

nor is it jazz in any way, Miss Toni has a lovely singing voice but it doesn't blend well with jazz and swing, anymore then putting say Peewee Herman fronting a big band, it might be charming at 1st but gets very dull. Toni's vocie is alright here, but she seems to be lacking the meaning of the standards, and conviction, as well as a sense of rhythm, timing, and technical skills that are essential for a swing singer. She may be able to pass as a caberet singer along the lines of Mabel Mercer, but this cd doesn't work well, because after one or two songs you begin to realize taht Toni's run out of cliches and ideas, she essentially copies styles of past singers, using so many cliches, she's bound to fool some into thinkign she actually can pull this off, but in reality this emberessing session, should never have been released.

5 out of 5 stars Hesperion XX and others.......2007-03-28

This is a truly inspirational disc that features several different artists. I came across this disc years ago because of my interest in time period music performed by Jordi Savall and the lovely voice of Monteserrat Figueras in the group Hesperion XX. Both are featured on this disc extensively. Listening to this music is almost like a religious experience, it elevates your senses beyond the mundane for a richly rewarding experience; it is an auditory time warp. Essentially this is a compilation of time period music with compositions mostly from the 1500's. Besides the fabulous work by Hesperion XX the disc also includes some interesting work by Hopkinson Smith on Vihuela while Figueras sings in her lovely soprano voice. There are also some nice orchestra pieces most notably by Issac Ibeniz on "Iberia, El Puerto" which is a lush theme that would sit well in a movie about Spain's Golden Age, Manuel de Falla's beautiful compostion of "El Sombrero De Tres Picos" as performed by Joven Orchestra Nacional de Espana and Roberto Gerhard's "Don Quijote Albada Danza" as performed by the Orchestra Sinfonica de Tenerife. Also of note is the work of Francisco Guerau and the magical baroque guitar of Hopkinson Smith as performed on "Treze diferencias de Canario." Listening to this music reminds one of the grandeur of Spains's past in the Age of Discovery. This is classical album for people like me, who really don't know that much about classical music but realizes good music when he hears it. Recommended for people who like to listen to time period music and the interpretations of Hesperion XX.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best classical music.......2001-02-05

I did'nt really like classical music till i bought España - Anthology of Spanish Music CD. I really, really love this CD. If your an artist and sometimes lack inspiration, I recommend this CD! It will get you in the mood to paint!

4 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2000-11-04

Two complaints: no liner notes so any potential educational value is lost (I have a number of reference books around the house and some of these composers don't show up anywhere in them) and there is at least one extremely jarring organ work that blasts out of nowhere. A more listener friendly compilation would've sequenced the disc differently or left it out alltogether. That said, this is a wonderful collection of music that I have (mostly) never heard before. I'm glad Naive Astree saw fit to put a lot of obscure and out-of-print recordings together to form this audio introduction to an underappreciated canon.

Highlights include:

Track 8 - Jordi Savall (gamba), Ton Koopman (harpsichord), and Rolf Lislevand (lute) turn in a brief but jaunty chamber performance of Ortiz. Left me wanting more.

Track 11 - Hesperion XX give a haunting vocal performance of Morales' Pie Jesu Domine. I'm not one to ususally appreciate this sort of music (so consider me uninformed) but I found this truly beautiful.

Track 15 - features Hopkinson Smith on the baroque guitar performing a fascinating Guerau work. Descending arpeggios like gentle, trickling waterfalls. Smith is a stunning performer. I wish he was better known in the U.S.

Track 22 - from Haydn's original orchestral version of "The Seven Last Words Of Christ On The Cross," this is the one tempestuous movement from a work of mostly subdued music. Deep, powerful string sound from Savall's Le Concert Des Nations. Very well recorded.

While I'd like to know more about the works and the composers behind them there is so much here to be enjoyed on a purely aesthetic level that I can't whine too much. If you have any interest, by all means pick up this bargain. You will be introduced to a number of great performers and works.

4 out of 5 stars Intimate and tuneful.......2005-01-14

I'm an admirer of Previn as both classical and jazz musician, and in both categories he excels. This album has the same intimate, highly musical quality that you'll find in Keith Jarrett's The Melody at Night with You. What I appreciate about both is the fact that the pianist's invention always serves the music; it's never obtrusively artful or showy. Highly recommended. Do yourself a favor and get Jarrett's disc to go along with this.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Previn.......2002-01-14

Andre Previn has always been an underrated jazz pianist. Because of his astonishing variety of successes as a classical conductor, pianist and composer; a film composer; a songwriter; and a performer of romantic cocktail music, he has been eyed suspiciously by the jazz community. In fact, his Tatum-like virtuosity, and his wildly unique and often playfully humorous piano style has made him one of the most interesting, innovative, and entertaining jazz pianists around. His many trio albums on Contemporary Records in the '50s (with Red Mitchell and Shelly Manne) still hold up as some of the best of their kind. But like Rodney Dangerfield, he never gets any respect. Thus, even his most kind critics are likely to throw darts at "Ballads" as too sweet and not swinging. Nonsense! It's not Monk, but it is nevertheless a beautiful set and a loving tribute to some of the greatest songwriters in Tin Pan Alley. Previn squeezes out every harmonic nuance of each song, yet he sounds like he's playing off the cuff in his living room late at night just to amuse himself. Previn may not swing like Teddy Wilson or Oscar Peterson on this offering, but I can't imagine any serious listener being left unmoved by his version of Burton Lane's "How Are Things In Glocca Morra?" It's simply gorgeous. Previn's amazing talents and his proficiency in many musical styles all come together in this unjustly overlooked CD. Give it a chance!

2 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2001-10-03

THe magic is gone. After reading the liner notes, I learned that someone at the studio asked Previn to make an album of just ballads. BIG MISTAKE. I think he was not in the mood.

5 out of 5 stars It's About Values, a fan review for "Don't You Know" .......2005-11-05

You live your life, day-to-day. Sometimes it's not easy and sometimes it's easier. You can go on for a very long time, just putting one foot in front of the other, your head down to the elements, just to survive and keep the people and things in your life who/that mean the most to you. But sometimes it gets really difficult. Sometimes we need inspiration. That's where the music comes in.

This CD - and, I'm discovering, most of the music composed in partnership by John Batdorf and Michael McLean - is about values, morals and ethics, accentuating the `good' in life; an all-encompassing value I can get along with.

I've said once before, in another review, that I am a lyrics fiend. I will be predisposed to liking a song if I read the lyrics and they go along with either my beliefs or my values or hit a chord from something in my life that rings true. It's the lyrics that draw me in. A song can be pretty as all get out, but if the words suck? You won't hear/see me wasting my time with it.

Sometimes you'll hear a lyric that will just be so brilliant that you can't help but note and remember it. Such is the case with the song that starts off this CD, "She's the Girl". Whoever was lucky enough to have this song written for her, wow, okay? The lyrics in here are lovely and my especial favorite is "she's the brush strokes in every Monet" ... being a Monet fan and having been to the gardens that inspired his brushstrokes, well ... what a high compliment.

The brilliant lyrics don't stop here. No, they keep going all throughout the CD, song by song, and that's one of the things that make 'Don't You Know' one of my newest favorites.

There's something about this CD that tells me that you can't "get it" with regard to the emotions and values put forth here unless you've lived some. To back up this thought is the second song, "It's Not Love", which isn't something you're going to really understand unless you'd been there and done that and made it last. It just makes sense. Infatuation, lust, and other possible beginnings to a relationship just don't become real love until the two of you have been at the starting line, run the race, stumbled, fallen and helped each other up and strove to finish the race together.

And then comes "Forgiveness" and here comes another value that may be difficult for many of us, including myself. This is a pretty awesome song and I often wonder about its origins; however, it's fairly generalized. Like I said at the beginning of this paragraph, forgiveness is one of the hardest things to conquer. I have a fence or two in my own background that never really got mended and may never get that repair in the traditional sense. Sometimes, though, you just have to walk away and let it go (but that's another song ... funnily enough, on this very CD!).

After which comes "I Will Not Be Afraid" which now ranks up there with my top favorite songs of all time. When I first heard the song and then bought the CD it became a very big help to me at the time. It remains my belief that certain songs come into your life exactly when you need them and that's what happened with this one. I think I may have worn this track thin. The other impressive thing about this song is that I have noticed that it is on all three available Batdorf and McLean CD's, and John almost always plays it during his live solo spots.

Walking away after you've had your heart broken has never - in my experience - been defined so well in a song until I heard "It's Only My Heart". In my experience, however, I have tended to be the heartbreaker. Which doesn't make the experience any easier; it still hurts, either way. There was one instance that has affected my entire life afterwards. And when I remember how hard it was for him ... I can listen to this song now and understand what he went through. At the same time, I can hear this song from either direction, and understand the pain.

"Promised Land". This is the only song on this CD that skates a little too close to things I'd rather not discuss in public. My promised land is probably a whole helluva lot different from yours. However, the song does address this in sort of an abstract fashion. It's personal. It's inside you. There's no address. You don't have to go to a concrete building and hobnob with costumes and ancient rituals to find it. And that's all I'm going to say about that (because I've probably already said too much already).

"Don't You Know", "Never Had to Ask", and "Heartbeat Away" are three songs that have held up my writing of this review and I realized that it's because I like to listen to them but they're less meaningful to me at the moment than the other songs herein. They're experiences I haven't been close to in a while, so the songs kind of fall across me like mild water until I get to the ones that mean a lot to me.

"How Much Rain". This song comes as close to sarcasm as I've ever heard from John. However, I like it a lot, and it probably defines why the previous three songs don't really make that much of a difference for me right now. For the past 25-odd years I've approached life from a business- and caretaker- perspective. It feels right to me if I'm taking care of my friends and, in reverse, when those people that I count as friends have made a difference for me. But for anyone to try and go deeper than that - well, that's where this song comes in - no one can count that high, no one can go that deep, and no one should even try.

"Let It Go" is the final song on this CD and what a wrap-up to a whole boatload of emotions and inspiration. It does my soul good to know that something that came hard won to me after many years of guilt and soul-searching, is not the mistake that people outside of the experience always told me it was. Sometimes you just have to forgive yourself and then you just have to have the courage to walk away. Forgiveness is not necessarily the same as letting it go; but when you finally do allow yourself the freedom to let go, no matter how painful, you can move forward with your life. Oh, yeah, I've been there once or twice, and learned from it. So it's soul-satisfying to hear "Let It Go" now from musicians I truly respect because it just reinforces something I learned the hard way.

John's voice blows me away. Seriously. It's sort of rough and tumble in a way, slightly reminiscent of singers like Bryan Adams and Don Henley, but with a quality, resonance, and timbre all its own. He sings every song as if he believes in the words he's singing and I have no reason to think that he doesn't. This is not a dishonest person, or an actor singing songs meant to get to you but without feeling behind it. I just think that John and Michael write songs they believe in and John sings them the very same way. Not only does that honesty come across, but it also makes the songs even more inspirational. It makes me want to stop and listen carefully to what's being said.

And then comes the music itself. I think it's important for a song to have a melody that's fairly catchy in order for it to have life beyond the initial writing of it. I can love the lyrics all I want, but if the song as a whole doesn't impress me, then I won't listen to it as often. I can't think of one song, yet, of John and Michael's, that I don't like - it's just that there are some songs that speak more to me and my personal experience than others. I have a lot of CD's and there are specific single pieces of music I listen to when I need to (among them are songs by CSN, Judy Collins, Amanda Marshall, Melissa Etheridge, and Jim Byrnes), things that work well on long drives (Jeff Beck, Jan Hammer, Talking Heads, Indigo Girls, Yes, Genesis, and Van Halen come to mind), and otherwise. There are musicians who are pure perfection in their words and how they stretch their voice and in the execution of their created music. I love bluesy music and bluegrass and some jazz, but none of these have constant staying power for me. None (well, there is one other but his first CD is still forthcoming) till now have come this close to something meaningful to my life - something I can listen to all of the tracks of and get reinforcement from while enjoying the melodies and the voice and the lyrics all at the same time. This is music that will never get old.

I've only heard one other CD of late that comes as close as this one to being a constant favorite of mine. That's one that recently became available, also from John and Michael: 'Batdorf and McLean: The Early Years'. But that's a whole `nuther review (to come).

5 out of 5 stars Don't You Know.......2003-02-14

This CD has great acoustic guitar work and a familiar voice, if you're a fan of Batdorf & Rodney's earlier music. I long to hear B&R's earliest recordings again on CD format. The album is a great acoustical recording with sincere lyrics written by John Batdorf & Michael McLean. McLean adds much to the finished work with his vocals and keyboard additions. This is a polished recording worth a listening too.

5 out of 5 stars Good But It's Not Batdorf&Rodney !!!!.......2002-02-02

This CD has a lot of good music and is worth adding to the collection,But it cannot compete with the Batdorf&Rodney albums from the 70's.Those three albums that Batdorf&Rodney made back then are great and the music is timeless. With all the Batdorf&Rodney fans that are still around and with the potential of adding new fans to the mix,You would think that someone would release all three of Batdorf&Rodneys albums on quality mastered CD,s

3 out of 5 stars Missing the energy.......2000-02-01

I am as excited about seeing John Batdorf's name on anything musical as one can be. The first two Batdorf & Rodney discs rank with the best I own, even after 20 some years. However, this CD lacks the energy and sheer musical joy that we came to know through B & R. No good vocal or music solos, no virtuoso guitar work and the harmonies are bland. Not to take anything away from Mr. McLean - if he had a hand in getting John back to the spotlight, great! And this isn't a bad CD. Love is still the message and the lyrics are pretty good. But until someone has the good sense to put Batdorf & Rodney's music on CD, we'll never have the joy of hearing "Can You See Him", "You Are the One", "Is it Love" or a dozen other B & R classics in the digital format. Their combined energy was almost mystical. They had the unique talent of making acoustic music sound positively electric! Having said that, this CD gives us glimpses of how good John Batdorf sounds. Make more music, John! How about a CD in 2000.

5 out of 5 stars You guys are right!.......1999-10-09

I am absolutely amazed to see there are other Batdorf & Rodney fans out there. I thought I was the only one. I saw them several times, at the Troubador and the Golden Bear in HB. Two guys and two Martins. I still play their stuff when I get my guitar out. You can find their records at "Recycled Records" in Reno, Nv. Contact me if you want me to check it out for you!

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars THE Golden Voice of All Time!.......2005-02-01

I first became a fan of Mario Lanza as a child, (though I didn't know it then), hearing my mother play his music so often in the 1950's. I think something told me even then that his was a very special voice. As a young adult, I eventually matched that unmistakable voice with the handsome face, when his movies appeared on T.V. occasionally, and later still, I purchased my own copies of all 7 films and some of his recordings, which I still enjoy today. My latest acquisition is "42 Great Performances", which I originally bought because it had the most songs & arias I could find and at a great price!! I think it is still an excellent value, because it has 21 popular songs, in English (except Granada), and an equal number - 21 operatic arias, all in Italian - on this 2-disc CD set.

I think the low price of this beautiful collection may be, as I realized upon playing it the first time, that a few of the operatic arias on the first disc are presented out of order of the track list. This starts with #7 which says "A Stranger in My Arms", clearly out of place among the Italian arias, and in fact, is not there. So the next few are out of order, until #10 when one NOT listed is included, "Una Furtiva Lagrima", then after that they are all correct. There is no problem like this on the 2nd CD in the set. This wasn't a problem for us, as we would much rather have "Una Furtiva Lagrima" than that other unknown song!

The important thing is hearing Mario's supremely gorgeous voice, as he sings song after song in all their splendor. He has a very rich, warm baritone-tenor voice, or spinto tenor, with high notes that are up there with the best tenors of the world! His Italian diction is impeccable too, due to his background with the language growing up in Philadelphia. Even his Neopolitan dialect diction on those songs here is excellent, which is no easy feat. For example, Andrea Bocelli, who is from the area of Toscano (Tuscany) in Italy, really has quite a strong Toscano accent which distracts a bit when he sings Neopolitan songs. Mario Lanza is a natural in English, Italian & Neopolitan dialect.

Besides Mario's powerful tenor when singing operatic arias, I love his beautiful mezza-voce, which is both sweet and caressing. You'll hear this especially on Disc 2, in most of the popular songs & ballads, but also on Disc 1,(the Italian disc) when he sings such lovely songs as "A Vucchella", "Mattinata", and Parlami D'Amore, Mariu`", 3 of my FAVORITE Italian love songs. I also love "Cuore 'n Grato", "O Sole Mio", as well as all the opera highlights, in particular the three from La Boheme, Madama Butterfly, and I Pagliacci. Both discs have so much to enjoy, from religious songs like the "Lord's Prayer" and "Ave Maria" to wonderful love songs, like "If, "The Loveliest Night of the Year", "They Didn't Believe Me", and "Be My Love", one of Mario's biggest hits. There are too many to mention - I even grew fond of some of the lessor known songs like, "A Kiss" and "Thine Alone". There are even a couple lively fun songs - "Cosi Cosa" and "Funiculi-Funicula , interestingly sung in English! I do prefer the Italian versions though.

Mario has a very distinctive voice, both very powerful as well as tender, and the great versatility needed to sing equally well opera as well as these popular songs, as you will see. The other thing you should know is that many of the songs are from live recordings, so there is applause at the beginning & endings of many. But when you hear this album set, you'll know what the applause is all about!! Mario Lanza's voice is as relevant today as it was in his prime in the late 40's, and 50's. Because of his ease with both English and Italian, and the natural sound of his voice, it outshined even many big opera stars of the times, who didn't sing popular song as well. I highly recommend this set of Cds, and most other recordings of Mario Lanza you can find on Amazon or anywhere!

4 out of 5 stars Waiting on the next blessing.......2004-07-03

Lisa - and those who hear your voice/music. You are so from the gut with experience, Spirit and Truth...and I love it. There's nothing better than hearing someone sing with conviction.... sincerely and genuinely; keep letting Christ and your own style flow thru you. I have loved witness for many years...even when other music seemed stale. And to see you perform live is electrifying because you allow your personality to shine thru as well. Keep changing and growing with these times - Witness too; Loving "Appointed Time" cd - The Lord does fight my battles!! Under www.pre-destineemusic.com - i am just a fledgling myself... I hope to touch as many people as you have with the gospel of Jesus Christ. If I could see you - I'd give you the biggest hug and kiss; you and your husband/family ARE blessed. Always a fan!!

5 out of 5 stars Angelic Voice from God.......1999-04-29

Lisa Page's CD is a project well overdue. She has touched my life for many years with her powerful voice and sweet spirit from God. The lady is AWESOME and I cannot describe the feeling I get when I hear her lift up the Name of Jesus the way she does. She puts her all into it and she by no means half steps for Jesus. I have seen her in action and she is giving God all the Praises that he deserves. My favorites cut on this CD is " BLESS HIS NAME". I have ministered in dance to that selection several times. Thanks Lisa

5 out of 5 stars This CD has been a blessing to me........1998-10-02

This CD has been a blessing to me. I listen to this CD all day long. I know every song word for word and it continues to bless me each time in Jesus's name. Amen --MAA26252.907270234/online-4.amazon.com--

5 out of 5 stars Hamonious and simply annointed.......1998-09-03

She is truly a woman who represents God well, in word and song. Her songs have touched me and has given me a new outlook on how great and powerful God really is, that God did send his son Jesus down from heaven to earth to die on the cross for our sins that we may inherit eternal life with Christ when he comes, and yes he is coming back. To be annointed is no joke and is not to be taken lightly. You go through alot when you are annointed but we can do all things through Christ which strenghtens us. So, Lisa Page keep on singing girl and let the Lord use you and direct your paths. For without him we are nothing, and we can do nothing. Keep on reaching out because there are souls that need and want to be free. Because listening to your album has touched and helped me to be free from past situations in my life. May God continue to lift you up, and bless you. Much Love.
