Keyboardist Duke, after stints with Billy Cobham, Cannonball Adderly, Jean-Luc Ponty, Frank Zappa (to stunning effect), and Don Ellis's big band, graduated with this varied 1977 program to jazz-fusion star status. The recording features popish jazz grooves with plenty of spikes inlaid, including rock-solid and heavy fusion, '70s funk, love-lorn ballads, and sections of bristling ensemble playing. One can hear what it was that Zappa liked in the eclecticist Duke: raw-nerved electronic keyboards with shifting rhythms and a sense of the funk, fun, and burlesque that Zappa relished. Especially deserving of mention among Duke's band members are searing guitarist Charles Icarus Johnson, thudding bassist Byron Miller, and drummer Leon Ndugu Chancler--propulsive, rapid-fire, time- and shape-shifting. But they all got the funk. --Peter Monaghan
Customer Reviews:
George Duke - Reach for It..........2007-01-23
If he was truly trying to "Reach For It," then Mr. Duke succeeded! Along with many others, I just knew that Ndugu Chancleer was Bootsy Collins helping George Duke out!! Boy, were we mistaken!! I got to see his show "live" at the Roxy. The man (and his band) sounded just like the album...he didn't miss a beat, which proved to me then that he understood what his "Pop" crowd expected. At the same time however, he would slide in a little "improvisation" which showed us his jazz roots and skills without upsetting the balance of the song. There was a young lady with a "skull cap" on in the band who showed that she was a capable percussionist (turned out it was Sheila E. of later Pop fame!). Ndugu Chancleer showed himself to be a mighty, mighty percussionist! To this day, I just sit in awe of the bassist (Byron Miller?) who totally owned the Bass solo in "Reach for It." It was one of the best shows that I've ever seen to date (I saw the show in January of 1977).
Man, I miss those days! If you don't own a copy, get yourself one (they're cheap now...). Five Stars for Mr. Duke and "Reach for It!"
GREAT STUFF.......2006-11-10
I love George Duke. This CD brings some very touchie feelings to mind. If I had a scale from 1 to 10 I will give it a 100!!!!!!!
Sampled to Death for a Reason.......2004-01-03
There's a lot more going on here than just first rate funk. The Latin tinged improvisations (one featuring a young Sheila E.) on this album are terrific. And the space age Moog on several tracks is mind blowing.
And yes, the pimped up funk on this record is fantastic.
But please don't just listen to this album as a "dated" relic; blow the dust off of it and give it another listen. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how top notch it really is.
THE BEST DUKE ALBUM.......2003-10-20
I THINK THIS THIS IS THE VERY BEST ALBUM BY GEORGE DUKE EVER. REACH FOR IT! EVEN THOUGH HE HAS MANY OTHER GOOD ALBUMS OUT. ARTISTS HEATWAVE AND SLAVE HAS ALL GOOD ALBUMS OUT TOO.
Reach For THIS!!!.......2003-09-18
The classic title song with it's loose,live-in-the-studio raps
and Stanley Clarke's THUMPASAURUS bass on the ultra-funky vamp
"Watch Out,Baby" are worth the price of admission alone. But we've
also got the Afro-Cuban influened "Hot Fire",the heavy latin-funk
sounds of "Omi (Fresh Water)" and the pure bombastic fusion of
"Lemme At It".Despite it's availability "Reach for It" is still pretty much early, firey George Duke-before mushy ballads took
over, even on pure pop-R&B crooning like "Just For You" and the
funky pop of "Searchin' My Mind".Although this is excellent through and through I still suggest Duke's BASF/MPS recordings
in the mid 70's (such as "Liberated Fantasies") as good referance
points-all those albums are only available on vinyl but worth
searching for.Look for those but buy this too-it's fantastic!

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

sunrise and astronaut in general.......2005-12-05
many people review astronaught and make comments about the time the boys were away from one another, how bad the music was when they were apart, etc. that may be so, but as a true fan of the fab five, i have purchased AND LOVED each and every track of each and every album/cd/dvd/etc., they have ever put out. the only one i truly had trouble with was the album LIBERTY however, its not that hard on the ears. simon - the voice - was never lost in all these years of the bands turmoil - he stood for DURAN DURAN while the others were finding their way back. i never lost the faith that they would. and in sunrise and other tracks on astronaut it is very apparent that the other 3 have definitely come home. you hear rogers unique sounds, andys missed guitar, johns lamenting bass, as well as nicks keyboarding/synths. but it all gels together - no matter who is behind him - as long as simon is there. this has to be THE number 1 cd - astronaut does not have 1 bad song on it. i was in a hospital room awaiting a heart for a heart transplant when i was up that morning i first heard sunrise on good morning america. i kid you not, the nurses came running in and tried their best to keep me from being too excited. but it could not be done. THE BOYS ARE DEFINITELY BACK AND WERE MUCH MISSED.
5 months after my heart transplant, i was in the corestates spectrum in philadelphia pa absolutely enjoying my boys back on stage where they belong. if you dont get this cd, you will have missed the meaning of the last 25 years of duran duran and all they mean to us duranies.
Sunrise--very good! Know it all---FLAT! .......2005-03-02
I just bought the single for the Know It All song that is not on their Astronaut album. While Reach Up for the Sunrise is very good and sounds like it was recorded in an arena in front of thousands of fans, I didn't like Know it All. Know is just eerie sounding and more of an instrumental song, with one member singing over a vocoder. Sometimes, you hardly know what they are singing in the song. I can see why they left it off of the Astronaut album, where the 12 songs on there are very superior. So while you're dancing to Sunrise, skip the CD button on Know it all. It sounds flat.
Back Together and with an Out Of This World Album.......2004-11-15
Five British pop stars hailing from Birmingham, England and starting out at a local pub called the Rum Runner Club and playing catchy tunes like 'Planet Earth', 'Careless Memories', and 'Girls On Film'. You know who I am talking about. Duran Duran.
They were the pin-up boys in the 1980's and now they are dads. They have a new album out called 'Astronaut'. Very much a danceable album and has great rhythmic tunes such as 'Sunrise', 'Astronaut', 'Bedroom Toys', and 'What Happens Tomorrow'. They are just a few to mention as well as other great songs off the new album. 'Astronaut' has launched Duran Duran into high gear ever since they have reunited back in the year 2000.
After reuniting together again in 19 years, their world has become astronomical. They have received 'Lifetime Acheivement Award'.Duran Duran has been playing sold out shows, appearing on national TV at the Super Bowl in 2003. And now they have a new album. Congratulations.
Their success has been long overdue and with 'Astronaut', it's not far behind. Lead singer Simon LeBon and keyboardist Nick Rhodes, has teamed up with the Taylor boys. They are drummer Roger Taylor, bass and <a href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=11&k=acoustic%20guitar" onmouseover="window.status='acoustic guitar'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">acoustic guitar John Taylor and guitarist Andy Taylor. None of the Taylors are related. Bu needless to say, Duran Duran is where they should be in life. They have this great connection with each other. And the last time they ever had a number 1 hit, was back in 1985 with 'A View to a Kill'. Which is also the last song Duran Duran ever did before they split.
Soon after that there was no more number 1 hits and no more Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor. Then in the next few years, John Taylor decided to do a solo career. Which by then, John has left Duran Duran as well. But one thing was realy clear to Simon and Nick, they wanted to have a number 1 hit again and to have the Taylor boys back.
So now they are back together again in full swing with their new appearances as being dads and putting out a great album. And they could not be any happier in life as of right now. Duran Duran sure has come a long way. But to put everything into perspective, they are still making music, making history and still making very woman in the world crazy over them all over again.
Duran Duran is back and better than ever!.......2004-10-13
AS a longtime Duran Duran fan, I have to admit that over the past 10 years or so I really lost interest in their music. Albums like Pop Trash and Medazzland never really appealed to me, and judging from the sales and reviews from critics, most everyone else in the world felt the same way. The lineup was a shadow of it's former self and it was truly reflected in their music.
Now that the whole band is back together, they have found their groove once again. "(Reach up for the)Sunrise" the first singel of their "Astronaut" LP is an uplifting, upbeat song that shows that these guys never lost it...it just took all of them getting back together to realize it. With Roger Taylor's "Girls on Flim" sounding drum line and Simon's suprisingly straightforward lyrics (remember, this is the guy who had lyrics like "Shake up the picture, the lizard mixture"), this song is sure to be a hit if the radio stations programmers get off their butts and relize that this is not just a one-off song from a nostalgic band, but a great song from a band that has managed to weather the ups and downs of the music industry for over 25 years! Give it a chance...Duran Duran will not let you down!
Awesome !!.......2004-10-08
No doubt that this single marked the Big Five come back. Yes, their back together again!! And its really really a great single ever!! It's like the old days coming back again.... back to the glorious era of Duran Duran. Its a must have single to all duranies all around the world!! Its a very Duran Duran's style which combined Nick's touch with all the Taylors' style along with the sexy voice of Simon!!

Album Description
Peter Coyle's "Reach for the Sun"
Peter Coyle is one of Liverpool, England's finest songwriters and most unpredictable independent artists, renowned for his work in such bands as the Jass Babies and the Lotus Eaters as well as his own hard-to-find solo oeuvre. His influence can be heard in such critically acclaimed artists like Travis and Badly Drawn Boy. The Reach for the Sun CD EP from Know-It-All Records offers the heartfelt and deeply poetic work that has kept Coyle's loyal fans spellbound. Coyle's melancholic croon captures the ghostly sorrow of Nat King Cole, the wounded romanticism of Nick Drake, and the emotional intensity of Peter Gabriel.

Customer Reviews:
New Single Launches Peter Coyle's Solo Career In America.......2003-05-29
REACH FOR THE SUN is the LTD Edition lead single from Peter Coyle's forthcoming solo album. It's really a double A side as the other studio track PHOENIX would have been an equally worthly choice to introduce America to the solo career of the talented Mr. Coyle. His U.S. label has really created the Maxi-CDS here by including three exclusive live tracks, each holding their own amongst the high standards set by the others.
I know Peter through his work with the UK band The Lotus Eaters and can say that any of these compositions could have been a part of a future album with that band. Simply put if you know of and love the songs he recorded with The Lotus Eaters you'll be thrilled with this release. Buy this and then call your radio station and request they add it to their playlist. (Rumor has it he may be playing Seattle's Bumpershoot this Summer!)
Woken by a Wonderful Dream.......2003-05-13
This morning I found myself in alpha state running "reach for the sun" at the back of my head. Peter Coyle's songwriting like wine has become more colourful and richer as time goes on. Anyone familliar with his songs during the 80's in the Lotus Eaters, would sense that he is writing songs with a lot less pain. His songs refers of flying out or escaping or drifting out of trouble seems quite frequent now as compared to before where pain was used more then. The recording quality is also sensed due to the crisp plucking and strumming of guitars in this EP. What is wonderful too is his harmonious merging of 80's sound with more recent electronic sounds that gives due respect for such (80's & recent) references. Peter Coyle's music blends wonderfully to a sound of its own, and is a refreshing note to know that He writes of brighter days ahead rather than the opposite. Otherwise, we may have lost another brilliant writer (like Joy Division's) to the world of the dead.
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.......2003-05-10
Bright new indie label Know-It-All Records should be commended for releasing a CD that blows away all the wannabes---Starsailor, Badly Drawn Boy, Elbow, and the like! Good music is always universal! Whether you like Dave Matthews and his clone John Mayer or Ed Hartcourt and Ryan Adams---Peter Coyle is king of the hill!
my kinda SARS.......2003-05-05
Like a breath of fresh air in these SARS-stricken times, Peter Coyle's music is the kind of SARS that i'm willing to acquire-- Sensually Appealing Radio-friendly Songs..
NEW DREAMS FOR OLD.......2003-05-01
Purge your soul of the inanities of bad music, soothe your flaccid eardrums with Coyle's anodyne--Reach for the Sun. 5 tracks of excellent eclectism. He showcases a rare gift of using a diverse range of musical genres without trying too hard--there's the bluesy 'Running Down the River', the mystical pop of 'Phoenix', and the acoustic guitar/pseudo-electronica flavored title track [check out that synth intro!] that would make DAVID GRAY seem like a poor cousin. Don't be a loser and miss out on this gem of an EP!
