4 out of 5 stars Say Yes to the Sotflightes.......2007-03-15

I must admit, I'm usually a little embarrassed to admit to friends just how much I love the Softlightes. Why, you ask? Well, it mostly has to do with how sticky-sweet and poppy their music and lyrics can be. The band's previous incarnation was The Incredible Moses Leroy, and I fell head -over-heels in love with their last album "The Incredible Moses Leroy...become the Softlightes". While this new album has some of the same lighthearted, transcendent moments that fill the last album, it just doesn't have the same depth. Rest assured though, your inner-cheese ball will be singing along to songs like "The Microwave Song," "Heart Mode of Sound," and "A Town Named Blue." This is truly indi-pop at is best, and this album along anything else by The Incredible Moses Leroy is great for listening to in the car on a sunny day with the windows rolled down. So who cares about being "cool," say yes to being happy and let your inner-cheese ball sing out with the Softlightes.

I bought this album after seeing them perform here in Los Angeles and I have to say the music is not what I typically like but what a GREAT album. It puts you in such a good mood.

This is a seminal electronic album that no-one should be without. This version includes the track Rubber West, which as far as I am aware has not been available since the original cassette pressing, and also various very hard to come by 12's, most notably Pumping Velvet, which is nothing less than a rare dancefloor classic. Get it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good buy.......2006-10-27

I actually picked up this cd at a Sound Warehouse back in the late 80's. Simply put, this was the best sampler CD I have ever bought (I would go so far as to say this one was definitely the best of the "Just Say..." series that Sire put out). The Ice-T track seemed a little out of place on this particular collection, but it's still a great song. If you really enjoy mid to late 80's alternative/New Wave music, get this one while you can.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Music.......2004-09-06

Picked up this sampler for cheap in a box of cds from an antique auction. To my surprise, when i started listening, the music was amazing. The first song by Depeche Mode goes on for 9 minutes, but somehow it works extremely well. Most songs on this sampler are bearable, and even impressive. Good songs from Echo and the Bunnymen, James, the Smiths, the Ramones, and an out-of-place, funny song by Ice-T. My copy was almost free, but you might pay the full price for this to find some rare gems.

4 out of 5 stars Too good to carry the unfortunate brand of a "sampler".......2002-09-17

As many out there would undoubtedly agree, most samplers record companies put out are disposable (and quickly become outdated). Their low introductory tag is not even worth the price of admission at times. This particular sampler that Sire records put out in 1987, however, is the exception to the rule. The reason for this might be that Sire records in the late 80's signed some of the finest talent around in 'modern' rock (the Smiths, Depeche Mode, Replacements, Erasure... you get the picture). However, I think the main reason why these samplers work so well is the quality of songs that were included. Instead of including a handful of minor singles and album cuts, plenty of rare cuts, live numbers, and extended mixes are included. Over time, these samplers have evolved from marketing ploys to nice documents of an important era in 'alternative' rock. That can be said of many simplers, which, as I previously mentioned, usually do not age well. I would recommend all the samplers in this series... except for the last one (Volume VII... Just Say Roe). Sire sacrificed the quality of the musical selections in order to push their political agenda. Shame really, especially coming after the release of possibly the finest in the series, Volume VI (Just Say Yesterday). The forgotten gems on that one make it a must. And hey, at this price...what are you waiting for!

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Gems!.......2001-06-15

Here is a little CD that has some fantastic songs on it. Take for example the extended mix of Depeche Mode's "Never Let Me Down Again"...9+ minutes of sheer pleasure. "Out of My Hands" (Lemonheads)and "Lips Like Sugar" (Echo and the Bunnymen)are both extended remixes as well. There is a Smiths song that (I believe) is not available anywhere else. Toss in Aztec Camera, James and the Throwing Muses and you've got an unbelievable compilation. Get it before it goes out of print!!

4 out of 5 stars Great 80's "Modern Rock" Collection.......1999-03-16

"Just Say Yes," Sire Records' first sampler in the "Just Say..." series, is not the best IN the series. However, it does have some fantastic bands (D-Mode, The Ramones, Echo & the Bunnymen, Aztec Camera), a healthy dose of modern rock nostalgia for anyone who grew up in the Reagan years, and it also spawned a terrific series of discs. And hey, for seven bucks (as of 15 March 99), how can you go wrong?

Plastic Bertrand is a group that is very hard to find in the United States, even with a song played on the radio such as, "Ca Plane Por Moi." "Nowhere Girl," by B-Movie rocks also! There is just an amazing selection of fabulous flashback music. This is definately a need for all of those other 80s music buffs like me.

1 out of 5 stars what the....???.......2003-10-02

Um, for an album supporting abortion rights, isn't the cover for this cd a little inappropriate? or perhaps it's TOO appropriate...either way it's pretty gross.

but the madonna track kicks!

1 out of 5 stars Just say whaaattt?.......2002-12-12

This cd is really bad with one exception...the rare Madonna single "Goodbye to Innocence." This track is great, it's a precursor to the famous techno/electronic albums Madonna has recently made. The lyrics interweave elegantly with the digital soundscape of the song. It really is a great track...buy it only for this single if you are a die-hard Maddie fan!

4 out of 5 stars If you like Danelle Dax...and even if not...........1998-08-06

I found this album at a mucic store in Berkeley last time I was up there, listed under Danelle Dax. I'm not too sure why it was listed under her, but she is the reason I bought this album. Most of the songs are a bit mainstream, but this is an over all good mix of style, with a good message behind it. I personally have a liking to female vocals, and Kristian Hersh and the Waterlillys fill that hole well. Doubleplusgood is very interesting, and it took a while, but I've really gotten into their fun style. But again, the selling point for me was Danelle Dax's song "Defiled", for all us fans who wonder what happen to her after Pop Eyes, here she is.

    5 out of 5 stars lovely.......2006-03-18

As a fan of Elliott Smith and of classical string instruments, this is truely the best of both worlds. I completely disagree that this is butchery of a talented man's music. And I doubt very much that he would object to this cd. It gives it a whole new feel and really brings it to a new level of beauty. In my opinion, lovely is the greatest compliment that I can give.

    1 out of 5 stars No Thanks.......2005-08-23

    1 out of 5 stars Horrors!.......2005-08-08

Once again the string quartet butchers a brilliant artist with it's simplified arrangements and awful musicianship. If you want to hear versions Elliott's works do him justice check out Brad mehldau (bottle up and explode), Bill frisell (satellite), ir chris O'reilly's soon to be released tribute album.

    5 out of 5 stars whatever.......2004-12-18

i just came across these string tributes and bought this one alonge with a david bowie and a radiohead one, and i think they're amazing. where the money goes to is completely irrelevant. kinda like saying spending money on anything that isnt elliott smith is selfish. the whole cd is great if your really into elliott smith. the way they put together waltz 2 sounds so great.

What a bunch of tasteless bottom feeders! What an injustice postured as a tribute to a truly talented artist no longer alive to defend himself! PLEASE do not give these people your Money!

3 out of 5 stars The Yays and Nays of Yo.......2004-10-15

I had this when it first came out in 1988, but was fool enough to loan it to a "friend." He promptly vanished with it. I hadn't given it much thought of late, but I had a real bug in my ear to hear Depeche Mode's single mix of "Rt 66/Behind The Wheel." I was truly surprised to discover that this CD is the only place you can find it any more! So I was happy to pony up the bargain price for this disc.

Aside from that rare DM cut, there are a few oldie but goodies here, including the outrageous dance mix of "Tubular Bells" by Book Of Love and Martini Ranch (featuring soon to be Movie Star Bill Paxton) coaxing Cindy Wilson to sing "Hot Dog." You also get the Morrissey rarity "I Will Never Marry."

Then there's the so-so stuff that the bunny label was trying to break, like Soup Dragons, who got better later, and James, who were great but languished in The Smiths shadow. There's also the bad: David Rudder's pop reggae and a poor remix of Erasure's "Chains Of Love." But like the old Warner Brothers "Loss Leader" albums of the seventies - oh gawd I'm gettin' old! - the "Just Say..." series was always worth a curious look. And I am STILL glad to have found "Rt. 66/Behind The Wheel."

5 out of 5 stars erasure fans rejoice.......2002-07-17

all of my friends agree, the erasure tracks
on this and just say yes totally groove.
book of love's tubular bells remix is
something every 80's music lover should own.
there are several other gems on this sampler.

4 out of 5 stars Some good songs.......1999-06-14

This compilation has a couple of good songs. The others I don't like. But, I guess that's the pupose of a sampler CD like this.

The Ofra Haza song was pretty wild. I later bought one of her CD's, but I was disappointed. The heavy-beat re-mix on the "Just Say Yo" CD is much better. The Depeche Mode, Erasure and Book of Love songs are also good.

5 out of 5 stars A good mix of different styles. especially track 8.......1998-10-19

A good mix of tracks and lots of good mixes. For a dance version of Tubular Bells ("The Exorcist" theme), try track 8. No, really this track is danceable. Ofra Haza is good as are Wild Swans, and try track 5 for an updates Rt 66 that has a post-modern edge!

4 out of 5 stars Super good value. Lots of tunes for just a little green!!.......1998-05-15

Had never heard of some of these artists and its really pretty good stuff. Lots of mixes and dance type beats with an alternative edge.

4 out of 5 stars Nearly 20 years old but still going strong!!!.......2002-03-12

Well, sort of, anyway. You see, there are a couple of tracks that are very... EIGHTIES. And they are, well, pretty bloody awful actually, if listened to as single tracks ("I Love You" & "No More Words").

However, as an album, listened to in its entirety, it's FANTASTIC! The over-dated songs merge in with the good ones, making an album that flows very smoothly. There are, after all, some absoloute classics here.

"Lost Again" has a real emotional quality that many songs are lacking. The gravally vocals compliment the lyrics and guitars. "Crash Dance" is short and sweet, with the basic layout of a techno track. "Great Mission" and "You Gotta Say Yes..." are pretty bizarre, but that's part of Yello's charm, and it's all good fun (once you work out what the lyrics are...). "Swing" never fails to make my foot tap, and "Salut Mayomba" is a haunting latin-influenced piece of class.

Of course, you can take Yello, or you can leave them, but I strongly suggest you take this album. Before "Oh Yeah" and "The Race", before they got way too commercial, before the REAL excess of the eighties, Yello were one of the best. And this album is one of the best as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Interesting .............1999-06-13

This is one of the oddest albums I have heard in a long time. Yello has always been an oddity. Songs like "Crash Dance", "You gotta say yes to another excess" are very odd indeed, but likable. My personal favorite on here is "I love you" just the sound & the way it's done is very interesting. I also liked "Lost again" it shows emotion & it's really great to listen to. This album does have a lot of synth in it, but it's worth listening too. I mean these are the same guys who made "Oh Yeah". It's definitely worth a listen!
