5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Now in its third generation of performers, the first family of gospel proves the adage that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. With We Got Next, Winans Phase 2--a teen quartet of cousins--follow in the footsteps of their grandfolks (Mom and Pop Winans), their respective fathers (the Winans), and uncle and aunt (BeBe and CeCe), as well as other family members. These four young men celebrate those ties while also reveling in their independence, noted both in their moniker and on the bound-for-hit single "I'm a Winans, Too," a peacockish anthem of respect and heritage. Phase 2 meld urban edge, hip-hop, and rap with Marvin Gaye-style soul, youthful exuberance, and a deep and abiding faith in Christ, as exemplified by lyrics of salvation and praise. And playing another hand with the family card, these fellas even do a fabulous cover of the Bee Gees' "Too Much Heaven." Get back, y'all, these boys are just getting started. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Review.......2006-10-11

This albulm is definitely worth buying. I listened to several of their songs online and that's how I familiarized myself with their unique sound.
It's mellow, and it's just plain refreshing to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars nice.......2006-01-05

I have always liked the Winans, and its nice to see the third generation following in their footsteps. Even though the CD was a good debut album, it did sound too studio. To me, Marvin Jr. and Juan have the best voices. This album has a R&B vibe to it that starts with them rapping about themselves. Some of the songs that I did like the most were:
I'm a Winans Too-8/10
Let Him In-9/10
Always For You-8/10
Just For a Day-8/10
Too Much Heaven-9/10
Thank You Lord-10/10 (the best song on the album)
This is the only album Phase 2 did. I really wished they released more albums; they did have potential and their career surely did not last as long as their fathers. I'm sure they're doing other things. Anyways this was a good album and enjoyable to listen to.

3 out of 5 stars Decent album but can't compare to the REAL Winans.......2004-09-17

I guess the people who reviewed this album are easily impressed. This album was a good album, at least by gospel music standards, but it wasn't a banger to me.

Some of the tracks are just generic R&B to me, like on "It's Alright/Send Me" (sorry folks, I just think the song is kind of boring, but the words really minister to me), and also on "Come On Over", though I like the "Awww" sample in the said track because it sounds like the old Winans. And while I'm on the weaker tracks, what's up with "I'm A Winans Too". If that "hip-hop" track was made in '94, it probably would have been a crossover hit, but this is the "milleniera" people! They gotta step there rhymes & flows up or just stick to singing because that song is W-A-C-K, wack! They should hire Tonex to remix that song for their next LP. I also wasn't impressed with "Thank You Lord", "Real Love", and "Just For A Day". And "Always For You" sounds like it was written by Uncle Bebe. It sounded ok.

Now to the highlights of the album. I love the groove of "Who Do You Love". That track was worthy of my repeat button. Another replayable track is "Everyday Away", nice ballad, nice groove, decent background vocals, good song. But the standout tracks to me are my two favorites, "Two Much Heaven" (this one is a default because it is just a remake of a song sung by one of my favorite groups of all time, The Bee Gees), and "Let Him In". They really hooked me with the latter. That "le-le-le-let-him-in" part in that song is a great hook. I had my repeat button locked on this song and replayed it at least 15-20 times so that I could memorize the words, I kid you not! I just wish that the whole album didn't rely on the "General R&B" thing.

When their fathers came out in the early eighties, they didn't sound like anybody before them, they were original. The Winans were way ahead of their time, and the way they wrote songs like "Question Is", and "Millions", was just phenomenal. Winans Phase 2 should take a page from that old Winans storybook, and be original. Not to come out sounding like just another R&B group.

5 out of 5 stars Truly A Blessing.......2004-01-13

I brought this cd back in 1999 the year it was released. I had not heard anything about Winans Phase 2 until one morning on BET when I saw the video "It's Alright(Send Me)" on Lift Every Voice. I said to myself that this song sounds really good. So I went to Wal-Mart and brought the album. At first I didn't see the cd in the gospel section, but the way I was searching through the stacks of CD's I found it. It was only 2 copies left. So I went home and put it in my CD Player and played the whole album through. I was like DANG they can sing. The whole Winans family is talented is what came to my mind. My mom loves the Winans family so I was like I gotta let her hear this. My mom loved the cd so much that she played it more that I did. My twin brother also likes it too. In the song "I'm A Winans Too", a line that caught my attention in that song the most is "Don't think were gonna mate cause I don't fornicate" I was like that's what i'm talking about b/c believe it or not, I'm still a virgin myself and I'm 19 yrs. old. These days you can't tell people(but not all people) things like that b/c they'll think something is wrong with you just because you're keeping yourself sexually pure until marriage. I can start preaching now and quoting scripts out the bible but I'm not going to do that. Back to what I was saying about the album though, the songs are really really deep and they send a strong message out to not only our youth but to everyone. In the song "Let Him In", another line that caught my eye was "He's making love to my/your heart and it's deeper than the eye can see". I love that, that's really deep. I can go on and on about this album but I'm gonna cut it short. This whole album is worth 100% of every penny you spend on it. I recommend everyone who doesn't have this album to go get it. I'm going to get another copy myself because I lost my copy on the way coming from Colorado Springs(the Springs) on the bus.

One Love

LIKE MANY OTHER PEOPLE I WONDERED IF UCB WAS ALL HYPE. I AM HAPPY TO REPORT THAT WHILE THEIR MANAGEMENT 3P PRODUCTIONS DOES AN AMAZINGLY WELL ORCHESTRATED PR STRATEGY TO HYPE THE BAND THESE YOUNG BROTHERS ARE THE REAL DEAL. THIS CD IS LOADED WITH SOME ROCKIN' TRACKS ORIGINAL STUFF THAT THE BAND CREATED.I THEN BEGAN TO WONDER IF THIS WAS STUDIO MAGIC .NOT! THEY ARE SO EXCITING LIVE. THEY ARE THE "PARTY BAND" AS THEY ARE KNOWN, FOR REAL.GO GET THIS CD YOU WILL BE VERY HAPPY AND CHECK THEM OUT IN PERSON. CHECK THEM OUT. PREPARE TO BE ENTERTAINED.
