Editorial Reviews

Mediterranean flourishes mixed with big rock rhythms and flawless pop hooks propel the debut CD by righteous rockers Burlap to Cashmere out from the crowd of new artists into a territory relatively unoccupied in either the Christian or mainstream marketplace. Familial harmonies resonate against nylon-stringed guitars and catchy worldbeat rhythms, while Steven Delopoulos's sweetly gritty voice gives an instrument to his universally spiritual yet uniquely Christian lyrics. Songs like "Digee Dime," "Basic Instructions," and "Anybody Out There?" percolate with Mediterranean heat. While more-conventional pop tunes like "Eileen's Song," "Treasures in Heaven," and "Mansions" are less distinctive, they display the band's deft skill at pop songcraft as well as its impeccable melodies and playing. A remarkable debut. --Bradley S. Caviness --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Exactly what was Pink Floyd's The Wall? Rock opera? Concept album? Performance art? Mere entertainment? While the truth may lie in a combination of all of the above, during the band's tour of 1980-81, The Wall was a bona fide spectacle. More than anything, Is There Anybody Out There? captures the volume, the bombast, and the grandeur of these famed performances with remarkable accuracy. Meticulously recorded, these concerts are astonishingly faithful to the band's studio versions and flow out of the speakers with practiced authority and absolutely fantastic sound. That said, there are few new revelations to be gained from hearing The Wall live that can't be gleaned from the studio version. Some moments do have an additional spark, however. "Run Like Hell" is launched with blistering intensity, and the first notes of "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1" will surely raise a shiver. The release also includes two tracks ("What Shall We Do Now," "The Last Few Bricks") left off the original release due to space constraints. Essential for Floyd fanatics as well as those wishing to hear just how terrific a live concert can sound. --S. Duda
Customer Reviews:
Better than the studio version.......2007-05-25
I got this as a gift from a friend and was first impressed with the very nice package of great photos and artwork. Honestly, it sat around for a while before I listened to it because I was never really that excited about The Wall as an album. Finally I listened from beginning to end and was pleasently surprised. I think this version is much better than the original studio release as it has a more cohesive feel to it and is not nearly as disjointed. The audio quality is fantastic too. The studio version was recorded in four different studios if I remember correctly, and you can tell. Here, the band is performing to visual presentations onstage so everything must stay together, and of course, there is always something magical about a live performance that you can't reproduce in the studio. All of the earlier PF live stuff is great though, like Cruel But Fair for example.
This is a must have for the hard core Floyd fan! Don't buy the cheesy two disc set, get the box set, it is a far better presentation.
Buy it now!.......2007-05-07
My boss at work recently lent this to me- at first I thought I would burn myself a copy- but the minute I put it in my player I knew I just had to buy it! Like every other Floyd experience, this is magical too.
Thank you Steve :)
Where's the legimite DVD?.......2007-04-26
5 stars for the audio CD...
But, more than a review I would like to ask if the "Is there Anybody Out there?/The Wall Pink Floyd" has been released on DVD as well?.
I have seen some DVDs on sale under the name of "The Wall at the Earls Court" but according to some reviews there...that DVD is a pirate DVD, nothing to do with this Audio CD.
Is There Anybody Out There...to help me?
Careful what you get!.......2007-01-25
The music is great, the bad rating is for Amazon. Although I've ordered the limited edtion, I received the "simple" editon. Of course, I got my money my money back (thanks for that) but I still wanted the limited edition. When I contacted Amazon, they've told me there is no way to ensure that I'll get the right edition and that it seems there is a problem with this product.
A piece of history.......2006-12-28
I never liked the studio version of 'The Wall'. All in all, I believe Roger Waters lost his mind and slipped into complete megalomania while they recorded their epic double album of despair. Of course, the wall has a group of outstanding songs that should have made up a single album. As a double album/cd somewhere along the way the music starts taking the listener down a one-way path to places that aren't very interesting at all.
That said I still have to give this live edition 5 stars. Why? It's a bloody good show. If you can get beyond the whining of Waters and concentrate on what he and the band accomplished theatrically then I believe you will find this a considerably enjoyable experience.
Plus, it's really cool to go back in time and hear Comfortably Numb played live for one of the first times ever. That's amazing in itself.

A Sad Ending to a Very Promising Story.......2007-05-15
Two friends & I literally stumbled across Burlap to Cashmere as we were meandering through Greenwich Village in NYC back in '97. There was a crowd lined up to pay to see them at the Bitter End, although there were loads of artists to see for free at many other local joints. We figured they knew something we didn't, so we took a risk and boy what a payoff. They blew the house away. I have never seen/heard anything so instantly musically captivating in my life. I talked to Stephen afterwards and was amazed at what a nice, humble person he was. They were signed shortly after that, and then I heard they were going to be at the Magic Bag, which is a tiny club in Detroit. I took some other friends down and found Stephen and the lads hanging out before the show. Again, these guys were just wonderful to talk to. There were probably only 20 of us in the club, but it seemed like 200 since my friends were soon just as mesmerized as I had been and were on their feet whooping it up the entire time. Sadly the story has a somewhat tragic ending and we all are left to wonder what could have been. I suspect burnout and disagreements came from overtouring thanks to being pushed too hard by the record label. I can only pray for a reunion for what could have been one of the greatest bands that could have spread their incredible music and wonderful message throughout the world.
I only listen to one song mostly........2007-01-12
The CD has a strong spanish influence. I do not care for the fast paced music. But I love Treasures in Heaven.
Breaks my heart that it'll be the only one..........2007-01-10
THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST ALBUM EVER MADE!! Hearing about them breaking up just breaks my heart- their music is truly unique and their sound is incredible. I'd pay twice as much for half the number of songs just to get another album. The guitar player is incredibly talented. I highly recommend this albumt to anyone with ears.
What could have been..........2006-01-27
Here is the true and tragic story of Burlap to Cashmere.
Burlap to Cashmere started gaining popularity in 1997 into 1998 and did a tour with Jars of Clay. I had the opportunity to see them open for Jars of Clay at the University of Iowa in 1998. There were probably under a thousand of us there in a small room so it was a real intimate feel. Even those standing in the back were not more than 50 feet away from the stage. What we saw that night absolutely amazed every single person in the audience. I'll never forget watching members of the band playing different instruments seemingly each and every song. One guy in particular that played percussion on one song was literally running back and forth from one side of the stage to the other to play different instruments. Each song was a clinic on how to play many different instruments on the same song. Each song the crowd got into more and more and by mid-way through their set every last person was in awe. Absolutely everyone was 100% into the music. When they finished their set we screamed for an encore and then another one but sadly they had to stop playing. Jars of Clay came on next and put on a good show. At the end of their show Jars of Clay said they'd like to meet all of us and offered to sign autographs after they had a few minutes to rest and get some water. As we were streaming out of the auditorium everyone was saying the same thing in different ways "Jars of Clay was good but we want to meet Burlap to Cashmere!!!" The funny thing about it was the chatter going into the room was "Who in the world is Burlap to Cashmere? Have you ever heard of them??" Everyone was so taken by Burlap to Cashmere that their table was 10 people deep waiting to buy their album while only a few were at the merchandise table of Jars of Clay.
Their CD "Anybody Out There?" went on to sell very well and the band rose to stardom and their fans eagerly awaited their next release. Sadly, no studio album was ever released again as the band members started fighting about where to take the music and eventually broke up. Their only other release was a very short live album called "Live at the Bitter End" Stephen Delopolous (one of the lead singers) put out a solo album that, in my humble opinion, is terrible.
I can't pick out any highlights off of this album as each and every song is a highlight that I rate as 10/10. Buy this album and treasure it for the amazing musiciansip, amazing lyrics and for what could have been.
One of the best albums of the decade.......2005-11-12
In the post grunge wake of the early 90's, music took a nosedive towards the incoherent. Burlap to Cashmere is one of the best exceptions of the decade of angst ridden pop. The songs are deeply moving and stirring. The classical-nylon guitars are virtuosic in their performance and dynamic sensitivity. I haven't heard anything like it in recent years. The sheer passion of the music comes through the CD with great clarity. The world beats and complicated rhythmic meters are stunning in their execution. The desperation and simultaneous hope of the lyrics come through. I have no idea why we haven't heard more from these guys. They easily are one of the best bands to have come in the modern era.

Live Version of the Wall a Good Choice.......2007-05-17
The live version of the Wall is a must have for advid fans of Pink Floyd. Seeing the group perform in years(decades) past gives me an appreciation for any of their music recored live on a CD. Its that simple.
Secret Message..........2007-03-04
The Wall is, like any other great art, a true masterpiece. Roger Waters delves deep into the human psyche and asks some very difficult questions whilst providing very few answers...
The live version is only an extension of the album...one truly needed to be there and experience it In The Flesh to appreciate it completely. However, the question remains...
Do you know the secret message that lies within The Wall? If you are not aware of the secret message that is hidden behind The Wall fear not...you are in the majority. Shocking that so many people don't actually know about this.
Listen...focus...concentrate...repeat...
That is the best hint I can offer for you...
The Wall Live..so ya, thought ya, might like go to the show !.......2007-02-18
I am a die hard fan of Pink Floyd and Roger Waters. We have heard The Wall so many times, the studio album. It is very good to hear other version of this well knonw prog rock masterpiece. The sound is surprisingly good and there is awesome version of classic such as "Mother", "Hey you" and of course "Comfortably Numb"
The Wall is an icon, and few album are so completed as this one.
the pink floyd live experience.......2006-08-13
pink floyds best live album by far, tracks include some of floyds best such as comfortbly numb, young lust in the flesh nobody home, hey you and mother, what shall we do now should have been released on the studio album but at least we have it here, unfortunately some of the songs on here are really bad such as vera lynn and bring the boys back home but those arent good on the studio album, this is even better than the studio album of the wall buy this
An Rare Instance In Live Recording.......2006-06-10
I bought this album having been in love with PF's album The Wall for years. I also knew the reputation PF had as a live band, and I must say they did not fail me. It is one of the only instances where I prefer the live recording to that of the original. The sound is full, rich, and one can feel the energy bursting out of their speakers. The audience noise also adds to the performance of the concert. People complaining that it's too close to The Wall album are missing the point, Pink Floyd can actually replicate an entire album live! That's an amazing feat for any musician. I would love for a DVD version of this to come out--but until that time I will satisfy my love for The Wall with this live CD.

Customer Reviews:
We're out there and lovin' every minute of it!.......2000-06-18
This double-CD live album from Pink Floyd is a must-have for any PF fan! It ranks up there in quality with Pulse. The recording is superb and the feeling that the band put into this concert 20 years ago makes you lose yourself in the surrealistic tunes again and again. Contained in this set is the best live performances I've heard of Mother, Goodbye Blue Sky, and Comfortably Numb. Nothing could be better, except for a new tour by Pink Floyd. Grab this one now and you won't be sorry!
THIS IS GOOD STUFF.......2000-06-17
In 1979, Pink Floyd released their landmark album "the Wall." The album was a story about an imaginary rock star who experienced feelings of isolation and is based on the life of the band's bassist/songwriter Roger Waters who like the main character lost his father in World War II.This is simply the studio album played live. But their are differences. Two songs "What shall We Do Now" and "The last few bricks" are additions not on the studio album. live versions of "In the Flesh" and "run like Hell" are far past superior than the original. If you're unfamiliar with the studio album I'll fill you in. The music is very creative and different. Some may find it wierd the title track especially. Other songs are very radio friendly. If you tune to classic rock radio often you are probably already familiar with Comfortably Numb and Another Brick in the Wall part II. The sound quality is great. I'll just put it at that. Another plus is the packaging with two cd booklets, one for each CD. Each have alot of information in them especially about the very creative shows which involved giant puppets, animated projections, scenes actually acted out on stage and of course a giant Wall being built up inbetween the band and the audience. This set is a must have for the Floyd faithful. Great songs, great packaging great album.

I can hear the vocals!!.......2004-03-20
This album just blew me away. Play it loud!! All the music comes through clear as a bell!! The vocals were excellent. The Piano was awsome, it was like I was there. The music was staged perfectly from the drums to the keyboards to the guitars and vocals.
I have the Jap remix and this album blows it out of the water.
I have a fairly 'hi-end' system which I'm sure helps.
Anyways I loved this one far better than the rest.
The book is great, a true keeper.

The Wall as it SHOULD be experienced!.......2001-02-06
Untill I received this CD set in the mail yesterday, I wasn't really a huge fan of The Wall. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but it is not my favorite Pink Floyd Album... Well,,, until now!! This is the most incredible performance! I was expecting a so so sounding live recording, but was I ever shocked when I put in the first disc! The sound quality is superb. The songs, to me anyway, are far more moving as performed live. Many subtle variances throughout add to the more realistic feeling. It is guaranteed to move the soul.. The different versions of the songs are so good it's unbelievable. "In The Flesh" (both I and II), "Another Brick in the Wall" (both I and II), "Mother" (oh God this one is awesome too!!), "Run Like Hell" (Oh my God in Heaven I don't even have words for this version of it!!) Just get this CD set, have a few listens, and enjoy!!!! Oh yeah,, remember Saucerful of Secrets?? The crazy piano work and freaky organ stuff?? It's here man!!! Interjected in the middle of Run Like Hell.. it's so freakin cool .. Damn,, just get this CD set.
Increadible.......2000-11-08
In this disc Pink Floyd exprerses their control over the audience, giving a completely new idea of the band. The enviroment created by the public outcry is encouraging and adds to the increadible performance of Pink Floyd. This disc is not better than the original studio edition as some songs so sound better and others don't. Anyway this disc is an invaluable part of any collection
SWEET.......2000-07-09
these cd's are amazing, you get a different feel about the preformance than you do when you listen to the studio CD. Buy it if you are a huge fan because it's cost has risen considerably.
floyd, at their best!.......2000-07-06
i'll not say much, but although this cd is quite expensive, the amazingly powerful songs make it so worth while buying! it's a must for all floyd fans, take it from me!

Customer Reviews:
smart, unique, fantastic music.......2001-12-24
I picked this album up at the Edinburgh festival in 1985. I was sitting in a pub having a beer and Mr. Nardini's music was playing in the background. I bought the album and it has forever remained in my top 5 list of all time sounds.
Peter Nardini is (pardon the cliche) the Scottish Dylan except he has a much better sense of humor. I've lived in California for the last 14 years but this music will propel you back to Scotland from its opening bar.
Its sad and melodic with such tracks as 'Glasgow Cathedral' and bitingly sardonic with tracks like 'Name Droppin'. It echoes back to the days of Thatcherism with 'Why sink the Belgrano' which tells the true and as-yet unpunished tale of the Falklands war. 'The Ballad Of Lawrence Orange And Eugene Green' is a hysterical account and unfortunately accurate statement of Catholic & Protestant relations. The (title) track 'Is there anybody out there?' shound definetly not be confused by anything with a similar name from Pink Floyd. This version is a poetic commentary on Glasgow bargain hunting...
Buy this music, share if with your friends, get it out there on WinMx. Either way, introduce this artists to the rest of the civilized world. And if you're not Scottish, you also get to learn a foreign lanuguage (Glaswegian) in the process.
If Peter Nardini - the man himself - ever reads this review, then my advice to him is to write more music and to do it soon. A U.S. tour would not go amiss either. I can't gaurantee that we would sell out the local Boy Scout hall, but me and my wife and a few friends will be there up front anyhow, hanging on to every word.
