This is an awesome CD (and video too).
The Cathedrals cap off their ministry with an outstanding concert of a lifetime. They sing many of their hits and old favorites with energy and enthusiasm.
An added little "extra" is special appearances Sandi Patty, The Statler Brother and The Oak Ridge Boys.
Wonderful CD and I highly recommend it.

What a classy group of gentlemen. Talk about an absolutely awesome tribute and an even greater talent. Truly God's gifts at work.

The presentation of this work is so inspiring and uplifting, I believe it's what God gave us gospel music for. I play it over and over and over. The talents of Glen Payne and George Younce are showcased wonderfully! The "supporting cast" isn't bad either.

This is my second review because I can't say enough about this CD. I just placed another order for an additional two CD's for Christmas. The selections on this CD had to have been sent from Heaven and are sung with such heart and love put forth by the Cathedrals. If you are ever down in the dumps, this Cathedral CD will bring you up. Best music on the face of this earth.

Yet another great collection of music by the Cathedrals. I really love this CD. If you have other Cathedral music, you may already have these songs since it is a collection from the Bill Gaither Homecoming series. Of course all songs are live recordings but very well done.

5 out of 5 stars How can I think of a title to summarize a classic like this?.......2005-11-28

Elliott's False Cathedrals probably did more to show me what independent rock has to offer than any other album. Although I have long since overplayed it, I have yet to find an album that makes a more phenomenal impression upon me at first listen, and False Cathedrals is still the overall best album I have ever heard.

I had heard only the quieter moments of the album when I bought it, so I was under the impression that it would be `soft but beautiful' from beginning to end. Although I was wrong (it is not a quiet album but is still beautiful), the surprise was more than welcome - and surprises there are plenty of here. No matter what you're in the middle of the first time you hear "Calm Americans," the moment the song changes, without warning, from an emotional rock anthem to an eerie drum beat marathon, your attention comes front and center immediately. The cult favorite "Drive Onto Me" is hard to listen to without closing your eyes and yearning melancholically for days long passed or for friends long gone. "Blessed By Your Own Ghost" is the perfect title for a song that seems to haunt you every time you listen to it.

Perhaps most notable of all, though, is the second half of the cd. An album typically begins to lose its consistency toward the end, or at least that's what I've learned from my own experience. Such is not the case, however, with this album, as the last five songs here are arguably even better than the first seven. Rather than starting out with a bang only to let up after a while (not necessarily in terms of sound but rather of focus), False Cathedrals seems only to gain steam with each track. It only makes sense, then, that "Speed of Film," the very last song on the cd, is easily one of the album's most appealing, accessible, and all-around strongest selections.

Of course, the musicmanship cannot be forgotten, either. The chemistry between the rhythm section of Jonathan Mobley and Kevin Ratterman creates an energy that gives each song its own distinctive personality ("Calm Americans" and "Carving Oswego" are among the best examples). Ratterman, in particular, is one of the most remarkable drummers you will ever hear, not because of the things he does to get your attention, but because of the subtleties he adds to each song that makes them all infinitely more intricate. Although you never know what singer Chris Higdon is saying (without looking up the lyrics, that is), you can tell that he is singing it with sincerity and passion. It is his unique voice that gives the whole album a deeply personal feel, as if you and Higdon are sitting calmly and talking over coffee while the guitars and drums rage on. One could say that Chris Higdon has one of the most endearing voices in rock, though most people have never heard it.

The melodies on False Cathedrals always sound familiar, but they are so beautiful that you cannot imagine them coming from anywhere else. This truly is a five star album: it is a masterpiece, and the only negative thing I can say about it is that I overplayed it far too quickly!

      5 out of 5 stars Elliott = Amazing.......2005-10-20

Melody, melody, melody. This album is beautiful. From the second I heard voices I knew I would like this album. Elliott is definitely one of those bands that you know should be huge, but just won't. Calm Americans, Blessed By Your Own Ghost, Drive Onto Me, Dying Midwestern, etc...Each song has such great substance and hits you in a different way. Word of advice, when your driving at night on a road trip, pop this cd in and crank it up!

Even though Elliott is now broken up you can hear live and alternate renditions of a handful of these songs on their new release Photorecording. This is definitely something you don't want to pass up, b/c Elliott in a live setting is absolutely amazing. By far and away the best band of this genre. Buy this CD!

      5 out of 5 stars elliot's "false cathedrals".......2005-04-28

I havn't been able to stop listening to Elliot's "False Cathedrals" since it's release, it's an album I accidently stumbled upon, and I am so happy i did. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and epic record I've ever heard. I didn't think the deliverance of an album this brilliant was humanly possible.

Everything from the music, the vocals, and the lyrics draw me in over and over again. This is the record I turn to when I want to feel inspired, nostalgic, calm, overtaken, and hopeful.

I urge everyone and their mothers to go out and buy this record, if you can't buy it, pirate it..It changed the way I look at music. Not life, mind you, just music..Which is what it's all about.

5 out of 5 stars Blessed, By This Album.......2005-03-02

'False Cathedrals' has opened my eyes to the beauty of elliotts music, and just what it means. Its all the things happy, lovely, sad, and sorrow together on an array of expression by elliott. From the beggining, it makes you listen, interested, alert till the end of the album. Its effect i must say almost made me cry in its beauty. Its somewhat hard to describe, like a possitive emotion, tangled with negative emotion. I believe "Blessed By Your Own Ghost" is one of, if not the most beautiful songs i have ever heard, its lovely, the whole experiance.

      3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2005-02-26

The first half of this CD is truly excellent. I heard it while browsing at a local CD store and grabbed it on my way out. I had never heard of this band before.
"Blessed By Your Own Ghost" is the peak, dreamy and yearning.
"Calm Americans" and "Drive On To Me" are also excellent.
The problem is that the sameness of the arrangements and the singer's voice start to grate by the end of the CD.
There is great promise here, but there could be a few more suprises in the mix to keep things interesting. Try The Last Brodcast by Doves.

4 out of 5 stars Good Solid Effort With Some Minor Problems.......2004-06-07

Adrian Legg is one the best acoustic guitar players since Leo Keottke. He is one of those players that seemlessly fuses amazing technique with great songwriting, hence resulting into something interesting. Something that not only keeps you're attention, but has a certain quality that it sticks in your head. "Guitars and Other Cathedrals" is an overall good album, but like I said in the title of the review it has, in my humble opinion, some minor problems. The biggest problem, to me, is the way he used effects on some of the songs. Acoustic, to me, shouldn't be tampered with. Maybe a splash of reverb or delay here and there, but not too much. It sounds like on one song that he is using some sort of chorus, which sounds awful and annoying. He didn't do this on EVERY song, but a couple. Aside from that minor complaint, which I thought it ruined a couple of songs, it was a really good album. The title track, which would be, "Guitars and Other Cathedrals" is absolutely amazing. "The Irish Girl," "Tracy's Big Moment," "Nail Talk, and "Thumb the Clouds" were some of the highlights to me. The title track is worth the whole admission, though, because he really shows an array of his technique and memorable playing from the heart. I recommend this to anyone who is already a fan of Adrian Legg's. If you're just getting into Adrian Legg, then check out "Waiting For A Dancer" before you check this one out.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing technique and even better compositions.......2004-02-09

Adrian Legg is one of those guitarists that other guitarists listen to and think "how does he do that?". If you see him live you will alter the question to "okay so that's how he does it, but how does he make it work so well?". You see, what he does is this. He has built his own guitar with a special tuning mechanism using banjo tuning pegs which he can use to retune any string extremely quickly and with perfect accuracy. So while he is playing, even while he is plucking the strings with his right hand or holding down notes with his left hand, he is constantly tuning this and that string up and down with whatever hand is free, and without any breaks in the rhythm. The result is the kind of fluid up and down bends you would expect from a pedal steel. His accuracy and fluidity in doing this is amazing to hear and even more amazing to watch. In 1999 he was voted "guitarist of the decade" by Guitar Player magazine.

Okay, so that's technique, but even great technique does not necessarily produce good music and, as a previous reviewer has rightly pointed out, too much technique for technique's sake often gets in the way of the music. Thankfully Adrian Legg doesn't fall into this trap. At least not on this album anyway. He writes all sorts of styles of music, each in a way that perfectly fits the style, and only uses his strange techniques when it makes the music better. In fact, there are only three or four of the songs on this album where he uses that particular guitar at all. On other tracks he uses various steel strung or nylon strung instruments, but always in a way that fits the music. The greatness of his compositions even outshines the greatness of his technique. The result is a collection of tunes that span a wide range of styles and feelings. There are some really beautiful tunes, one highly complex multi-faceted composition, quite a few dynamic onslaughts and even some touches of comedy. I wouldn't necessarily agree that he plays all styles perfectly though. For example the long title track, which at first seems a bit rambling and directionless but has grown on me to reveal itself as possibly the best song on the album. Despite its wondrousness, I can't help wishing I could hear it played by someone capable of the precise emotional expression of a top Classical guitarist like Julian Bream. It's wonderful in its composition but, despite Adrian Legg's technical brilliance in many areas, not quite perfect in its emotional expression. Having said that, there's no way even Julian Bream could attempt some of the other tunes and neither could he have written them.

This is one of my very favourite CDs and better than any other fingerstyle album I have heard.

        5 out of 5 stars Religious.......2002-10-30

Listening to Adrian Legg one can easily see how he regards guitars as cathedrals. His playing is spiritual, passionate, and amazing. The majority of this album is Legg alone on his guitar playing his unique brand of finger picking style. He is fast, yet melodic; complicated, yet relaxing. Hypnotizing. A joy for the ear.

Legg is superb on mixing different styles of music together. From these styles he has developed his own sound. There are many great cuts on this album that display this musician's ability at playing and composing. He is able to change playing styles to help create tension in addition to note choice, moving fluidly from arpeggios to strumming as in "Tracy's Big Moment" and the title track. "Divorcee's Waltz" is a waltz that has a bit of Irish and Country flare to it, while "Nail Talk" is simply peaceful. "Cajun Interlude", "Pass the Valium (with Knobs On)" and "Reckless Love" have his trademark "out" sound and are probably the most rocking tunes on the disk. His thirteenth track is a mere four seconds of blank space labeling him as a possible triskaidekaphobic.

Legg give us thirteen great musical tracks that leave you dazzled and peaceful at the same time. This is a great place to start listening to Legg as this was his first release on the Relativity label, and is probably the earliest album of his that you can easily find. If you like guitars, musicianship, and laid-back music (not quite jazz yet not quite new age) this is an excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a guitarist with technique AND compositional skill.......2000-12-02

In the wake of Leo Kottke, and later, Michael Hedges, the world has seen a deluge of guitarists of incomparable technical skill who inevitably develop a following of rabidly loyal fans for no other reason than that they can play a lot of notes very quickly. Unfortunately, few have any idea how to actually compose an interesting piece of music. In case you can't tell, I am not a fan of the so-called "new age" school of acoustic guitar, and I absolutely despise those who view music as merely an opportunity to show how quick their fingers are rather than to express themselves through composition. John Fahey was not the most technically gifted guitarist around, but when he got everyone started on this solo acoustic guitar stuff, he got people hooked because his COMPOSITIONS were so fascinating. Adrian Legg, however, is not only one of the most technically brilliant guitarists I have EVER heard, he can blend folk, classical, Spanish, English folk, Celtic, jazz, bluegrass, and occasionally a bit of country into a complex, fluid, ever-changing piece that is as emotionally gripping as it is technically perfect. Never before have I heard someone so capable of bringing so many distinct forms together so coherently, and never does Legg display this better than on the title track to this-- his first album. Since then, he has not been quite so impressive. Guitar for Mortals is well worth owning, as is Mrs. Crow's Blue Waltz, although I am not as fond of his other albums. He has a tendancy to get repetitive, and he occasionally goes a bit too far into the realm of country for me. This album, however, is a must-own. As a warning, don't expect the percussive/aggressive style that so many of the guitarists around today display, and don't expect the sedative, I mean, "meditative" sound of the new-agers. This is clearly in the classical and jazz guitar traditions. Imagine Andres Segovia meets Django Reinhardt.

5 out of 5 stars An Acoustic Guitar Delight.......2000-01-19

My short list of guitar heroes over the past two decades has always included Leo Kottke, John Fahey and Michael Hedges and I own all of their albums. While browsing through the reviews at this website I came across the name of Adrian Legg and have now added his name to my list.

Guitars and Other Cathedrals is amazing. The experience of hearing this British guitar genius on this album for the first time was like my first hearing Kottke on Six and Twelve String Guitar. The thought keeps going through my head: How can one guitarist coax such sounds out of his guitar?

This is not new age noodling for the faint of heart. Legg's music is brilliant, fluid and inspired. From here, check out any of his other releases on Relativity or Red House. (Unfortunately his 80s albums are no longer available.) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Harmony at its best!.......2003-08-15

It's the Cathedrals, what more needs to be said. These guys harmonize like no other group. This is just another excellent collection of great songs that is so typical from the greatest quartet. Of note on this CD are many old standards (How Great Thou Art, It Is No Secret, etc.) that are well worth the price.

        4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected........2000-09-08

Although this is a very good CD, it was not what I had expected. I was looking for the Cathedrals of the 80's and 90's to be doing remakes of these songs. There are some from those groups, but most are older, and slower. I would have liked them to have been a little more uptempo, on the songs that should be. Such as "Victory in Jesus". All in all I rated this with 4 stars, because it is one that you will enjoy having in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Good gospel music.......2000-06-27

This CD is one of my favorites by the Cathedrals. It combines the old favorite hymms I love with the harmony of one of my favorite groups. Any one who enjoys good old fashoined harmony and gospel music would enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Title Say's It Best!.......2000-08-30

I find it hard to believe that no one has written a review on this CD . I happen to think it is "Classic Cathedrals". I bought this when it first came out on cassette over 10 years ago, and it is STILL one of our families favorite tape to listen to. I have five children, ranging from 4 to 14 years of age, and they all know and sing all of these songs. The old style of convention,(Stamps-Baxter) type songs are great! Most of the songs have great bass and tenor parts, but don't be worried, you still get a lot of Glen Payne. It is an upbeat CD with several of the songs having all the different singers sing different parts at the same time. My favorite song on the CD is probably, "Give The World A Smile". Also as an extra bonus, there are 20 songs on this CD. You can't listen to it and not find yourself happy and singing along. As I said before, I have had this tape for many years, as well as many other Cathedral tapes and CDs, but as a family, we have listened to this CD more than any of the others.

5 out of 5 stars An Independant Baptist Preacher fan of The Cathedrals........2001-01-15

This is most definately the best of The Cathedrals! I believe the Southern Gospel Music customer viewing this review would not be the least bit disappointed with this great collection of soul stirring songs by the Cathedrals. I was introduced to Southern Gospel Music by groups like Gold City, Kingsmen, The Squire Parsons Trio, and The Cathedrals, and of them all I personally believe you cant go wrong with a quartet with the powerful sound The Catedrals are famous for having. Personally I believe that George Younce (the Bass) has been blessed tremendously with a rich deep, but yet smooth voice that makes nearly all the songs of The Cathedrals Anthology collection a must have if your a Cathedrals fan. Roger Bennett does an AWESOME job at keeping the piano in the spotlight as not too many quartets in the Southern Gospel Music have been able to do. If you know Rogers health condition of having cancer, I think youd agree that God has prolonged his life possibly for the fact of being what he is in The Cathedrals quartet, especially in the Anthology collection. We know that Glen Payne has passed on to be with the Lord now, but for his time he really could sing Gods praise as him and George Younce started the group years ago. It is amazing to think that George, and Glen had praised God for 35 years when the Anthology disc was recorded. Im sure if you have an ear for a good "Olde Fashioned" Gospel Group, but yet still modern enough that even the teenagers seem to know the songs youll come back to some of the titles featured on the Anthology Collection time, after time. Step into the water, Shout over heaven, Sinner saved by grace, and Jesus saves, are all songs that have a very good Gospel message presented in them to meet the name of Gospel music, but overall I believe these are some of the best songs brought together on two discs that The Cathedrals have performed. Youll find that when your just in the mood for a song that will cheer you up, and encourage you that O, What a Savior on disc one is just the song youll need. Ernie Haase, and Scott Fowler sound great together, and personally I believe for a groups voices to match and blend so well you need look no further than The Cathedrals. By Gods grace I can honestley say that if you give The Cathedrals Anthology collection of great music a try you definately will not regret it. For the price it will be tough to find a better deal. And I think if your a bargain shopper that over two hours of music recorded on two discs is plenty enough, especially on account that you get to hear Glen Payne, who is gone on with the Lord and Americas lowest bass George Younce both together. That alone gives the Anthology collection much value to the collector of the Cathedrals, but for the new listeners Im confident youll be satisfied with your purchase. I myself sing in a quartet and take it from me when I say that The Cathedrals Anthology "A 35 Year Musical Journey" will become one of your most prized possessions in your Southern Gospel Music collection. Thank You ! John H. †

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Investment.......2000-04-28

This was my first Cathedrals purchase. All of the great songs are included. You'll enjoy everyone. It covers a lot of years of excellent recording and is played in over two hours. If you're looking for a good Cathedrals sampling. This is it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Example of the Greatest Quartet Ever!.......2000-03-19

This two-CD set is a great example of American's favorite quartet: The Cathedrals! With hits ranging from the early "Sunshine and Roses," and "Somebody Touched Me" to more recent "Still Drinking Water From The Well" and "Ride That Glory Train," this traces the music of a great asset in the gospel music industry. A MUST HAVE for ANY gospel music fan!
