Marisa Monte, one of the strongest voices of Brazilian popular music, has one of the sweetest and most seductive voices you'll ever hear. But since the early 1990s, she's kept close ties with the downtown New York scene, connecting with people like David Byrne, guitarist Marc Ribot (who guests here), and producer Arto Lindsay, who's behind the board again for this record of romantic songs. Unlike some past outings, there are no unusual covers this time, just self-penned material and pieces by Jorge Ben, Carlinhos Brown, and other native talents. Monte manages to inject a wistfulness even into an outright love song like "Amor," and the despair of memory is never far below the surface throughout. Ranging from utterly acoustic to gently electric, Monte doesn't try to rock your world, but lets her voice slip into the bloodstream and the heart on songs like "Tema de Amor." A Perfect Song.......2007-03-18

I bought this CD back in 2000. I got my first Marisa CD in 1990. I have followed her career, dropped out for times, always when I reconnect I am amazed.

This CD has great moments, maybe a few songs miss but I won't mark them here. It has what I think is a perfect song.

If you love the music of Brasil, you must have this CD. That is all I have to say. It is the basis of her video DVD from Rio in 2000, and get that watch it to see her and how she performs. This concert is amazing.

The perfect song is not in the concert unfortunately. It is the last cut here. "Sou seu sabia." A song by Caetano Veloso. And perfectly Caetano.

Marisa sings it perfectly. She went to Italy to study to be an opera singer but decided that was not for her and returned to Brasil and began her great career. In this song, you hear her technique. I am an opera person, and I know that here the technique pays off. Her singing is just fantastic, I would say perfect.

Caetano's lyics are just as perfectly composed. His song becomes the exact thing he is trying to express. I can't say anymore. He has composed a song that expresses human desire through birdsong and Marisa perfectly signs it. This is lyrical and musical expression at its most intense. The arrangement here is lush, some people might misinterpret this. The expessive intensity is everywhere apparent, although.

One should buy this CD for that one track but there is so much else to buy it for.

I truly agree with "wordsmule" review on this CD.

Marisa Monte shows us what love is all about brazilan style. Do not get me wrong, this is not "typical", folklore or "world like" music.. Brazil has its own contemporary dimmension in many fields including music... and this is so universal..lets not forget that through internet and Amazon we can have access to this expression that otherwise would be reserved to those priviligied to have the access to this treasures. I live in one of the many countries neighbouring Brazil and its still very hard (and expensive) to locally find brazilian music.

a lot of my brazilian friends don't like her voice on this cd, but as an american who's brazilian at heart, i have to say i love this cd...especially songs 2 and 4. i've listened to it so much now my cd skips.

Marisa Monte is the real deal! one the most amazing records i have ever heard. a hauntingly beautiful record, drippiing with emotion and mood. i think i'm in love.

Hindemith's stunning String Quartet No. 4, Op. 22 (1922) takes listeners on an amazing musical journey. JanÃ¡cek's fervent String Quartet No. 2 ("Intimate Letters") from 1928 expresses the mature composer's white-hot passion for a much younger woman. Rick Barry is a songwriter from NJ whom the Star Ledger has already called A "Living Local Legend", and The Aquarian weekly has called "No Mere Sensation." Rick is above all else a story teller, with melodic hooks and clever lyrics, he pulls you in to epic tales of existential dilemna and does not let you go. Rick has played with many touring acts From all over the world, for example: Glen Tilbrook (of Squeeze), Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Nine Days, Nada Surf, Josh Ritter, and Amphibian (feat. members of Phish) to name a few. Rick recently won his third Asbury Music Award for "Best Acoustic Act" after returning home from a west coast tour. In March 2006 Rick's song "Courage for A Rainy Day" was awarded the Grand Prize in the John Lennon International Songwriting Competition as well as "Graphic Narrative" placing 2nd making him the first singer/songwriter in the competition's history to compete against himself in the final round. In July, 2005 Gary Wien of Upstage Magazine dubbed Rick Barry "The Next Billy Bragg" and wrote "he's constantly changing, constantly evolving, and usually full of surprises. Should Have Been Around For Years.......2007-05-26

The Los Angeles based women's Gospel group Futrel, were as good as they get. And had they received better fan support would still be recording. Still one of my Gospel favorites, I was fortunate enough to have my CD signed by one of the ladies, after being informed by a friend that she worked in our building. After one listen to "Declarations" any fan of contemporary Gospel will be hooked as well.

Futrel -Declarations.......2003-06-22

This is one of two recordings released by this dynamic female contemporary gospel group. Their sound features tight, well polished, soulful/jazzy harmonies similar to the secular group The Emotions. Every song is well done and well produced. It is a shame that this group did not get the recognition that it so rightfully deserved. It is also saddening that Futrel did not record any more (to my knowledge). This recording and their other release is a timeless collectors item in my book. I think Futrel is one of the best female contemporary gospel groups ever!

ok, we had to wait a long time for the new album of marisa monte (we could enjoy work of her with carlinhos brown on his 'omelete man') but finally, it has arrived, marisa's new album... it's everything i expected and much more... for the first time, marisa monte plays the guitar (on the songs she has written or co-written). as always, she has got a little help from her musical 'friends' like arnaldo antunes, carlinhos brown... this is marisa at her best ! muito obrigado por sua musica marisa !
