Good Album.......2006-04-21
The songs "more To This Life" and "I Will Be Here" are the most inspirational songs of this album.
A Universal Message.......2006-03-22
Released in '89 under the Sparrow Records label, 'More To This Life' was the third album/CD by Christian songwriter/singer Steven Curtis Chapman. Containing -11 tracks- of not only enjoyable, uplifting music and lyrics, but also conveying a level of depth and introspection that set this collection of songs above most of the other contemporary Christian music being released at the time.
'More To This Life' was not formula-matic and predictable and it fully displayed Steven's ability to touch on so many different concerns in life and present the gospel message in an intelligent, unoffensive manner. I think the biggest praise I could give this CD is that you don't have to be a Christian to enjoy it. After all, isn't that the true intent of Christian music? You can't convert anyone if you can't get them to listen.
Perfect.......2005-06-29
This CD is perfect. I wouldn't change a single thing. I thought this the first time I heard it in 1989, and I still feel that way! There are only 2 other CD's I find perfect: Amy Grant's "Lead Me On" and Allan Hall's (from Selah) "House of a Thousand Dreams". If you like Steven Curtis Chapman but are bored with his new stuff, or just want an inspiring, wonderful CD, I would get "More to This Life" right now! My all time favorite song on the planet is "Way Beyond the Blue". As a teenager, I made a cassette (didn't have a CD player then!) of this song, filling up an entire side, so I could listen to it at night over and over without having to rewind after each play, until I fell asleep to the words "His love is wider than the sky above you/And He has plans for you that go way beyond the blue". Words can't describe the impact this song and entire CD had and still has on my Christian walk, and actually making me believe in a very real way that God knows who I am and cares for ME (and you) with a love that is beyond human comprehension. I would recommend this CD to anyone of any age. I liked it at 16, 25 and now at 31!
Better than Speechless?.......2004-11-22
This CD is truly unbelievable. When Speechless was released, I thought it was SCC's best work, but after attending a SCC concert recently, I pulled out his older CDs. More to this Life has 10 tremendous songs that just grip my soul.
The title track was a much-played radio hit that did not lose its appeal despite massive airplay. It is still a great tune. Love You with My Life is one of the most fun Chapman songs ever, right up there with Dive. Waiting for Lightning still speaks strongly to my innermost being after 15 years. I Will be Here is a classic. Treasure Island is a tremendously moving tribute to God's Word. Way Beyond the Blue is one of the most personally inspiring songs I've ever heard, making you sense the strong love God has for you. In This Little Room is a very fun nostalgic song. And More than Words is deeply moving, riveting, bring you to bittersweet tears song.
It is amazing that this CD was released in '89. I like First Hand and Real Life Conversation, the first two Chapman CDs I owned, but SCC makes a tremendous progression on this CD, released the same year as First Hand. Same producer, same label, but these songs could be played on the radio today and people would think they were brand new releases, unlike many of his earlier songs, where SCC was still developing his style.
If I could only have one SCC CD, this would be the one. Speechless is tremendous, but More to this Life really does leave me speechless.
this one's too soft..........2004-10-05
Where, oh where, are the teeth on this album? As with much of Chapman's early releases, there are some good songs here (More To This Life, I Will Be Here), but he hasn't quite broken through and found his musical identity yet. For the most part, these songs are safe, soft and formulaic.
For the fan of later Steven Curtis Chapman releases, this may be a step backward. While lyrically strong, there are no songs here with any musical edge. You wouldn't be missing much if you stuck with the tracks from his Greatest Hits album. Nothing wrong with vanilla ice cream, but wouldn't you rather have a double scoop of "heavenly hash" instead?

Not like the "old time" Blackwood Brothers.......2006-11-10
Sound is quite different from Blackwood Brothers albums of 25 years ago. I was rather disappointed.
Essential Blackwood Brothers Country.......2003-09-28
This album is the best of 60s-style country. Porter is a down-home singer with a warm, everyman style, and The Blackwood Brothers add the right dose of gospel and power singing. The classic country instruments, especially Porter's own steel guitarist, give this album a delightful twist. For a modern continuation of this classic, southern gospel sound, don't miss The Blackwood Brothers joining Engelbert Humperdinck in the CD, "Always Hear The Harmony." The Humperdinck-Blackwood Bros. feature has a lot of the same emotional quality asthis CD and is destined for "top in its field" just like this Porter-Blackwood Bros. team-up. 1st tenor great Bill Shaw, probably the greatest-ever gospel tenor, sings on both, and his high voice is unmistakable.

Another coup for the Collector's Choice label.......2004-12-31
For a guy who was once so famous, former sausage king and soft-country crooner Jimmy Dean sure dropped off the radar over the years. This is the first major retrospective of his work to come out in the States on CD, gathering together his biggest hits for Columbia, including "Big Bad John" and the various "big, bad" spinoff singles, along with the remainder of his chart singles made before he left the label in 1966. Dean's star was already falling when he split for RCA, and there's not much notable in his career after that, other than his mid-'70s Mother's Day novelty hit, "IOU," which sadly is not included on here. This 24-song collection is pretty comparable to the Bear Family import that came out a decade earlier: both albums have all his major hits, and then they veer off in different directions when it comes to the B-sides and album tracks, and the Bear Family set only goes up to '62. This new retrospective sticks more strictly to his chart material, so it may be more interesting to folks who knew Dean through the radio... at any rate, if you want to check Dean out, this is the place to go.

The Reverend Gary Davis's other two early-1960s Prestige/Bluesville titles--Harlem Street Singer and Say No to the Devil--were released on CD years ago, but this middle title finally makes its first digital appearance in 1999. All three of his Prestige albums are absolutely riveting, although you could say that about anything he cut except for his very last recordings. Along with his original 1930s work and his late-1950s Folkways cuts, these three sets were touchstones of the burgeoning folk revival and a major influence on countless blues, folk, and rock performers. Davis had not yet returned to secular music in 1961, and so these 12 cuts all fall on sacred ground. His blend of ragtime, gospel, and Piedmont country blues remains one of the most potent forces in 20th-century music; nobody ever immersed himself in the moment of performance as completely. Your only challenge will be deciding what is more remarkable: his magical guitar runs or his passionate preaching voice. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Unbelievable power and grace.......2007-05-15
You have to hear the Rev to truly appreciate him. Try it, you wil not be disappointed.
A jewel of of picking style,and a terrific voice.A must........2002-06-19
It's a pity that many of Blind Gary Davis' very great records aren't available here. His 1935-1949 recordings, first; his two magnificent Biograph LPs,which may not have been reissued until now;but you can buy other masterpieces, like the great "demons and angels" set.Gary Davis was born April 30,1896,Laurens County,South Carolina. He lost sight as a little baby, and learned to play harmonica, banjo and guitar before he was ten.He recorded a few sides with Blind Boy Fuller in the thirties, then did a few sides under his name in 1935 and 1949.After that,he worked in New York as a street singer and preacher, until he was rediscovered and had the opportunity of making records and playing concerts. He died May 5,1972,of a heart attack, while he was going to Newtonville,NJ,for a concert date.He was mainly influenced by Blind Blake, and he influenced dozens of great players: Blind Boy Fuller,Brownie McGhee,Josh White,Roy Bookbinder,Ry Cooder,Larry JOhnson,Bob Dylan,Stefan Grossman,Taj Mahal,Tarheel Slim, and Alec Seward. His extremely difficult finger picking style, full of ragtime figures,is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard. But he was not only one of the most gifted guitar players (maybe the most gifted one with the magnificent, amazing, overwhelming, etc,Blind Blake),he also had one of the most expressive and powerful voices in the history of blues and gospel. These tunes, recorded August 10,1961,are perfect examples of this.Of course, the Reverend only plays and sings sacred songs;he very rarely played blues after the war (a few ones on his Biograph LPs,and a complete LP of ragtimes in the sixties).I've often dreamed I was in Harlem, meeting him in a street, where he was playing, and listening to him for hours.Maybe you're a lucky owner of one of the video tapes issued by Stefan Grossman;then,if you ever had the chance of seeing the Reverend, even on TV,you know what I mean.Hearing him is great, seeing him is terrific. There's a tape where he plays a long and dramatic version of "death don't have no mercy",which can resume everything. Some minutes (five? seven? I don't know) of perfect beauty, and outstanding emotion. And some chords you've never think to play, too.Because of his blindness,Gary Davis had invented his own playing. If you try to copy him, you'll have nights and nights of pain and troubles.
Even if this record is not his greatest one,it's already miles and miles away from most of his peers. It could be a perfect introduction to the Singing Reverend's art,so don't miss it.And look for a reissue of his two Biograph LPs,or his pre-war recordings: you'll discover the Reverend playing and singing the blues,in the same style than Blind Boy Fuller;but remember he was Fuller's main influence, not the contrary.
Stunning guitar.......2001-10-13
I agree with previous reviewers about the quality of this album, but I'd just add one point. The first two tracks of this album are among the finest that Davis ever recorded. "You Got to Move" is a tour de force of joyous driving ragtime, and as ever with Davis, the interplay if voice and guitar is flawless. The second track, "Crucifixion", combines a gruff spoken sermon with a hypnotically swinging ragtime guitar counterpoint.
I don't think that the rest of the album maintains this standard, but it is an essential purchase for the first two tracks alone.
The Rev. at the top of his game.......2001-03-08
Rev. Gary Davis, blind street preacher and gospel-blues legend, cut this album in 1961.I have found his anonyimity somewhat mystifying. Here is a blues singer with heart and soul, and a voice of a hardbitten angel to match. among musicians, he is celebrated, but th general public would have their blues from others. odd. This album inessentila in the davis canon. From the fist cut{you got to move},Rev. davis is is full command. this is simply him and his guitar, though there is magic here{or grace, if you would prefer.} He ends this sessions with When I die I'll live again, a perfect coda to this excellent collection
Electrifying!.......2000-07-06
Blind Gary Davis is up to his best work in this 1961 recording of the finger-pickin' giant's own special brand of Piedmont blues Christian standards. If you dig this man, you'll dig this disk!

Customer Reviews:
Great collection of bluegrass oldies.......2003-12-28
This is the follow-up to an earlier collection called - you've guessed it - Appalachian stomp Bluegrass classics. That compilation (which I've already reviewed) includes all the traditional bluegrass songs that are famous outside bluegrass circles including Blue moon of Kentucky, Foggy mountain breakdown, The ballad of Jed Clampett, Rocky top and Duelling banjos.
This collection mainly focuses on songs that are regarded as bluegrass classics by bluegrass fans but are generally not known by the public, except for two songs that are bluegrass covers of non-bluegrass songs. Fox on the run was a top ten UK pop hit for Manfred Mann in the late sixties but has become a bluegrass standard. City of New Orleans is a folk-country standard, which has been recorded by many fine singers including Willie Nelson, Judy Collins, Lynn Anderson and John Denver. Now you get the chance to hear a bluegrass version by the Seldom Scene.
The other songs here feature some of the biggest names in traditional bluegrass including Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, the Stanley brothers (including Ralph, whose recent albums have done so much to widen the appeal of bluegrass music), Mac Wiseman, Jim and Jesse, The Osbourne brothers and the Country gentleman. Alison Krauss closes the set with one of her early recordings.
If you enjoyed the previous volume, you will love this. If you haven't heard the other volume, buy that first.
The best variety of bluegrass.......2000-05-09
This CD is totally rocking! There is not a bad song on it. It has a lot of variety. Just a great buy.

More Southern Gospel Classics.......2007-01-31
I love this CD. This isn't really mine, it's my mom's,but we listen to it in the car sometimes when we are on the road. I have quite a few favorites on these CDs so I'm not going to list them... but when i get an MP3 player, I will definetly be having these songs on there. I highly recommend these CDs.
