Customer Reviews:
Fabulous recorded, astounding live!!.......2007-04-07
I am so happy to run across Michael Powers again. My first experience of Michael Powers was in 1992 when I visted Bleeker Steet for the first time and wandered into a bar named Terra Blues. I went in because I heard some incredible blues guitar and thought it was a rare and fabulous Hendrix performance I had never heard.
Nope, it was a man with a strat playing like I imagine angels play for God. Just a man and a guitar, and I was hearing choruses of angels.
He was playing an original titled "Graffiti" and it was played with such passion and heart that I was nailed to the floor by the intense feeling it invoked in me. It was like hearing Jimi play "Little Wing" or "Angel"; live from ten feet away.
I sat down; it was lunch time and there was no one in the bar but me and the bartender. Michael was playing for himself, full intensity and all stops pulled out. I had, and to date have never, seen such virtuoasity. Although Hendrix was, and is, my guitar hero, I missed seeing Hendrix live by a year. It wasn't just Michael's obviuos mechanical skills, the emotional content was rich and palpable. The right note at the right time for the right feeling.
When Michael finished with "Graffiti", I commented, "I bet you could tear hell out Jimi's 'Spanish Castle Magic'." And so, to my great pleasure, Michael did a set of Hendrix tunes mixed with a few originals.
I sat with my eyes closed and feet propped up on the little stage thinking to myself that this must have been what is was like to hear Hendix play at Cafe Wha?. Or even better, to hear Jimi play in his apartment whe he played for himself. It was one of the most incredible 60 minutes of my life.
One guy and one guitar.
Michael Powers channels Hendrix, but with his own original flair and style. I can say that Prodigal Son does the same thing to me now as the times I heard him play at Terra Blues. I close my eyes and imagine a small stage, a pint of guinness, and a broken heart.
I peeked every now and then to watch his fingers. As a wanna-be guitar player, I figured I would learn something. No Way! He was all over the neck. Scales, arpeggios, tripps, you name it, he did it. And all with a wonderful timing that showed Father Time was not the boss of him.
I've seen some great music in the Village: Iggy Pop, Joe Walsh, Leslie West, David Tronzo, Rick Derringer, Chris Whitley, Jill Sobule, Susan Said, Mary Me Jane, Chris Glenn, etc., but this intimate, private concet by Michael Powers stands out among these other powerful performances.
Great music, incredible talent, and raw soul. [...].
Do Yourself a Favor and Get This.......2006-10-29
Refreshing and a relief, Michael Powers does put the old clay to new uses. His originals are just that, ORIGINAL, leaning on anthem ambience. His covers don't sound like the originals, so there's a reason to listen to them. He sounds as happy to play acoustic guitar as electric, and he's receptive to all sorts of accompaniment, which is a good match for listeners' ears. He's as funky as Stax and as much fun as a rerun of the Blues Brothers movie.
It is apparent that, while absorbing the foundational songs of the blues, he formed images of the characters who'd created those songs as well. It is a wonderful thing and a sign of deserved musical stature when an artist is thorough in that way. This is a thoroughly enjoyable, must have release

Customer Reviews:
Swedish Surprise.......2001-11-12
Alfven's Second Symphony is probably the best unknown symphony in the world. Almost no one records it, it is never played in concert halls (at least not in the states), and for some diabolical reason Alfven is still best known for his first Swedish Rhapsody (fine piece though it is). The Second Symphony is so much more--a complete surprise if you enjoy late Romantic music and have never heard it. Powerful, brooding, yet with melodies that only Alfven could have written (the second theme of the first movement, for example). How this symphony remains unknown is a complete mystery, as it easily ranks with early Nielsen and Sibelius. The Naxos version is wonderfuly played, the sound is great, and overall, it is a tremendous performance that should win a wide audience (as wide as classical can be these days). The bonus, his short ballet suite from The Prodigal Son, is lighter Alfven, but extremely charming stuff. Derived from Swedish folksong, it inhabits a sunny world very much in tune with his early Swedish Rhapsody. A must have for fans of late Romantic music, Scandinavian music, or Alfven's works. Go ahead and buy it.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent collection of Prokofiev's major works.......2007-06-25
I was introduced to the music of Prokofiev through his symphonies, and was immediately drawn in by the beauty of his music. So I bought this box set without listening to any other of his works first.
I was not disappointed in any way. Here, collected together very nicely, are a large portion of Prokofiev's works. Many of the performances here are reissues of past recordings, mostly from the '80s and early '90s. There are many imminent performers here, such as Mstislav Rostropovich (Prokofiev was a good friend and teacher of Rostropovich, and dedicated his Cello concerto to him after hearing him play), Seiji Ozawa, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and many other excellent musicians and orchestras. Rest assured that these are some of the best performances available of the works included.
The recording quality is unquestionable. Most of the performances are digital, clean, and rich (no distorted, thin, distant, or weak recordings here!). The only disc which contains poor recordings is the Archive Recordings disc, which is understandable as the recordings are very old (including Prokofiev playing or singing some of his own works and some works by other composers).
As for range of compositions included, we have here a magnificent collection of Prokofiev's most important music (and some of his rarer pieces as well): his entire symphonies and concertos, a selection of his instrumental music (including violin, flute, cello, and piano sonatas), many of his stage works including Romeo & Juliet, Alexander Nevsky, the Prodigal Son, The Steel Step, The Love for Three Oranges, Lieutenant Kije, etc., and an entire recording of his War and Peace opera.
One inclusion that I find somewhat baffling is that of 4 different versions of Peter and the Wolf: English, German, Spanish, and French. I would have been content with just the English, but I suppose listeners from other countries can benefit from the other languages.
I really can think of no better way to start a collection of Prokofiev's music. Here you can get his major works, and for a decent price (used copies can be a very good deal). If you are interested in the music of Prokofiev, or in 20th century classical music, this set is a great way to get a thorough introduction to Prokofiev. Highly recommended!
A great gift for classical collectors.......2004-05-13
I think it's needless to say how famous are S. Prokofiev and his works. I just want to give some details about this collectible gem.
This boxset has 5 parts:
-Sonatas box: Instrumental and chamber music. 5 CDs including sonatas for violin(s), sonatas for piano, piano and cello, piano and flute. Music for childen, and a quintet (G minor)
-Concertos box: 4 CDs. Including concertos for violin(no1 and 2), for piano, symphony-concerto for cello.
-Symphonies box: 4 CDs from sym No1 to sym no7. no4: Op.47 and Op.112
-Stage works and Films scores: 6 CDs. Romeo and Juliet, Peter and the wolf, Alexander Nevsky, Scythian Suite, The Prodigal Son, Cinderella, The love for three oranges...
-War and Peace opera: 4CDs
-Bonus: Role music. Including piano pieces.
There is no question about the quality:
-Sound: 5 stars
-Performers technique: 5 stars
-Boxes and color: 5 stars

Finally, I would like to use Sviatoslav Prokofiev's words: "This Anniversary boxset is a most impressive testimony to the interest my father's music arouse among artists, orchestras and audiences alike."

Album Description
The White Box is Naxos' flagship boxed set series, dedicated to exploring complete areas of a composer's work. All releases in the White Box series are presented in durable and attractive packaging with the discs enclosed in individual sleeves. From the beginning, Naxos has sought to let these masterpieces speak for themselves and in designing these boxes, the music is presented with minimal fuss. Such minimalism does not apply to the generously sized booklets, which offer full essays on each work plus a biography of the composer and artists. The booklets also contain a specially created chronology for this series, which sets events in the composer's own life into a wider musical and overall historical context.
Customer Reviews:
Great price, but out of tune Ukrainian brass.......2006-10-04
I love this collection simply because there's so much music in it. Yet I find that Kuchar struggles to maintain the driving pace, and wrest the fortissimo out of the orchestra, demanded by the more brutal symphonies. Most disturbing to me, though, is the fairly common occurrence of high-profile brass notes, and somewhat less often, woodwinds, that are just out of tune. I realize the 2nd and 3rd symphonies are chromatic, and fairly dissonant, but you can still clearly hear intonation problems. Check out the counterpoint line at 0:17 in Variation I of Symphony No. 2's Theme and Variations, the ending of Symphony No. 3's Allegro agitato - Allegretto, 1:29-1:36 of Symphony No. 5's Andante, or the woodwind intro of Symphony No. 6's Largo.
A Super-Bargain But Variable Performances.......2004-06-05
This set contains not only all the symphonies and all the concerti for piano, for violin, and for cello, it also contains some ballet music (The Prodigal Son, for instance, which is rarely recorded), the Waltz Suite (delectable music rarely heard in the concert hall), and the almost-never-heard Unaccompanied Violin Sonata, among other tidbits, all on 9 fully-packed CDs.
Taking them category by category and with some attention to individual performances, I would start by saying that the five piano concerti, as well-played as they are here, are simply swamped by Vladimir Ashkenazy's set with André. Further, the Naxos performances (with the excellent Korean pianist, Kun Woo Paik, with Antoni Wit and the Polish Radio Symphony) are in somewhat glassy sound; their more recent provenance does not give them improved sound over the Ashkenazy set. I did like the verve of the D Flat Concerto (No. 1) in particular, however.
The Violin Concertos fare better, both in terms of performance and particularly in sonics. Tedi Papavrami is a young Albanian violinst, erstwhile pupil of Pierre Amoyal. The first thing to say is that he does not seem be copying any of his violinistic predecessors in these concerti. Notice in particular how well he projects the top line in the double-stop passages and his affinity for the lyrical aspects of the music. He has technique to spare, generally spot-on intonation, and real musical feeling. The only competition on a single disc is that of Gil Shaham who plays these concerti with real flair. Neither of them plays the Second Concerto with the laser-like intensity of Heifetz, however. And in the First there is the still-paramount Oistrakh. Still, these are creditable performances and I'm glad I have them. The Solo Violin Sonata is given a nicely judged performance and has very little competition on CD.
The Cello Concerto is given in the revised version, now more commonly called the Symphony-Concerto, Op. 125; Prokofiev had written it in the 1930s but when Rostropovich came to the fore in the late 1940s he worked with Prokofiev to revise it into the present form. For a time it was called the Sinfonia Concertante, and then, when revised further, the Symphony-Concerto. And of course Rostropovich owns the work, having championed it around the world. He recorded it in both of the revised forms, but those performances are a bit hard to find now. A pity. Still, the present recording is quite good. It features a cellist I'd not known of before, the 40ish Russian Alexander Ruben. Both the soloist and orchestra (the Polish National Radio Symphony under Antoni Wit, who accompany all the concerti in this set) are top-notch here. The same can be said for the Cello Concertino, Op. 132, which was unfinished at Prokofiev's death in 1953, but completed by Rostropovich and Dimitri Kabalevsky. This ravishing but rarely-heard work is given an outstanding performance. And the disc is filled out by the two delectable Pushkin Waltzes, Op. 120, which are Prokofiev in his most lovably ironic manner.
We come now to the seven symphonies. This is a very uneven set. They are all played by the National Symphony of Ukraine under their regular conductor, the American Theodore Kuchar. When I put on the First Symphony (the 'Classical') my heart fell; this is a dolorous account, taken at very slow tempi until, finally, in the last movement things start moving at a faster clip. The playing is OK, but the interpretation simply won't do. The Second is better but there are some balance problems; it sounds as if half the string section didn't show up the day it was recorded. The brutalist Third Symphony (developed from music taken from his opera 'The Fiery Angel') is given a decent performance. There are better single performances out there, though, including the one, surprisingly, by Ozawa (which is also included in his budget-priced but also variable complete set of symphonies). Symphony No. 4 is coupled with the music that spawned it, the ballet music for 'The Prodigal Son.' It is nice to hear the two pieces side by side; one can hear that Prokofiev took themes from the ballet and subjected them to symphonic development. Both performances here are quite nice. Symphony No. 5 is soft-edged and sounds as if it were recorded in a cathedral-like acoustic. That, coupled with the slight mushiness of the strings, makes this a gentle but not competitive performance. One misses the bite one hears in better performances. I happen to like a no-longer-available performance by the St. Louis SO under Slatkin, but there are others out there who feel the Järvi or the Previn are better than that one. The Fifth is coupled with 'The Year 1941' symphonic suite; this is simply not top-drawer Prokofiev although it has a few creepily effective moments. Symphony No. 6 is given a generally quite good performance. It begins with a scarily peremptory brass introduction (one imagines the NKVD at the door) before the ironically tender violin theme comes in. Nicely done. The Largo is ominously effective. But in the last movement, marked Vivace and taken a little too slowly for my taste, there is a weird drop-off in aural presence that I take to be a problem with either sound engineering or the pressing. However, the filler here, the Waltz Suite, surely one of Prokofiev's happiest collections (waltzes taken from 'Cinderella,' 'War and Peace,' and from a movie score) is possibly the best thing in the whole set. Or maybe it's just that I love these waltzes inordinately no matter how they're played! To complete the set, Symphony No. 7 (which is coupled with No. 3 on CD 2), written in Prokofiev's last year, returns to the simplicity of the Classical Symphony and is one of his most tuneful and least troubled. And it is given a very nicely judged performance here, relaxed and genial.

Sullivan Pays Homage to Mendelssohn--and Sullivan.......2004-05-21
One reviewer I've read has said of Sullivan's "The Prodigal Son" that he would rather listen to it than to Mendelssohn's "Elijah." To invoke the name of Mendelssohn is to admit the obvious: Sullivan's chief, and it seems just about only, musical debt is to the German composer who hit it big in England. In fact, "The Prodigal Son" might be what Mendelssohn would have written if he had lived another 20 years, but I doubt it. The older composer seems to have turned a creative corner in the last year or so of his life, and I think he would have taken up the gauntlet thrown by Berlioz, Liszt, and Wagner (whose music mostly appalled him) in some interesting way or other if he had lived more than his allotted 39 years. At any rate, to prefer "The Prodigal Son" to "Elijah" is kind of baffling to me. Though Sullivan proved a great tunesmith in his operettas, the tunes in his sacred music fall short of his obvious model. For example, the aria "Love not the world" falls far short of "Elijah"'s very similar "O trust in the Lord," and the recitative followed by solo and chorus that describes the prodigal's alcoholic debauches is outdone by the scene in Mendelssohn in which Jezebel confronts Elijah and calls for his death. This despite the fact that the solo Sullivan wrote for the prodigal, the most memorable music in the piece, displays some interesting chromatic turns and twists--Sullivan's concession to modernity--and has a very apropos part for the side drum. On the other hand, the orchestral music in this solo is a knockoff of the fairy music from "A Midsummer Night's Dream." It's a nice knockoff, but I'll take Mendelssohn's overture and scherzo, thanks.
And so it goes, for me at least. I've been there and heard that--and have much preferred the original.
One of Sullivan's biggest misjudgments is the long and plodding chorus "O that men would praise the Lord," capped by a lame, perfunctory fugue. There's some pretty soupy, insincere-sounding stuff in Mendelssohn's choral music, but I can't think of anything that's as lame as this chorus by Sullivan (though afterward Sullivan almost redeems himself with a lovely quartet "The Lord is nigh"). But there are no such missteps in the Boer War Te Deum. This is an altogether more deeply felt work, the product of a musician who has something to say. Written in the last months of Sullivan's life, the Te Deum was to celebrate the end of the Boer War, though that dreadful conflict dragged on longer than anyone in England imagined it would. As it turned out, the first performance took place almost two years after Sullivan's death.
The work is a brassy, big-throated affair as it should be, given the projected event for which it was written. But more significant is the air of world-weariness and resignation that Sullivan manages to weave through the work. This speaks not only to the burdens of empire that his nation was suffering toward the end of Victoria's reign, but perhaps also to the burdens of the last years of Sullivan's life, dogged as he was by sickness and professional disappointments. The most immediately apparent feature of the work, however, is the inclusion of Sullivan's own great hymn "Onward Christian Soldiers," which comes in for truly majestic treatment toward the end. Hearing it, you can't believe that God will ever let us be confounded, as the chorus demands at the end of the Te Deum. This work will move you.
Conductor Ronald Corp is a Sullivan specialist, and he builds a magnificent edifice for the Te Deum. Certainly he does as much as he can for "The Prodigal Son" and is abetted by a very able vocal quartet and a fine chorus. The sound is up to Hyperion's usual high standards. I only wish I liked "The Prodigal Son" more; maybe you'll take to it better than I do. Because of the sterling performances and the presence of the Te Deum, I give this CD four stars.

"I could fill a palace with lost ideals".......2000-05-04
This is a great album by the latter-day version of the Saints. The music (guitar, bass, and drums, with strings or horns complementing a few tracks) is very straightforward and infectious, and the lyrics, while philosophical, are very concise as well. Chris Bailey is the only founding member of the Saints at this point, but he has the distinct voice of the Saints. He sounds not unlike Them-era Van Morrison at times, and his spirited vocals are the perfect compliment to these soul-searching tunes.
The songs: "Ghost Ships", "Stay", "Massacre", and the opening track "Grain of Sand" are imbedded in my long-term memory. Like the reviewer below, I was glad to rediscover this in CD. There is nothing really musically groundbreaking on "Prodigal Son", just great, memorable songs. It's important to mention that this version of the Saints defers greatly from the late seventies version of "I'm Stranded" fame. While the earlier version produced an adrenaline rush via fast-paced, punk-energized songs driven by Ed Kuepper's distorted guitar stylings, this latter incarnation focuses on introspective pop utilizing jangling electric and acoustic guitar, strings, and horns. Not the best summary of the two styles, but I think a distinction should be made. Take a listen.
Finally - I found this CD!.......2000-04-29
This is one of my favorite recordings. I listened to this when I was a travelling college student in Europe and felt like a "grain of sand". This brings back a lot of memories. I love the Saints and can't believe you have so many of there recordings. I will buy this today and be back for more.
