This double-disc reissue documents one of the more curious careers in country music. Both 1978's White Mansions and 1980's The Legend of Jesse James are Southern song cycles that were conceived by Britain's Paul Kennerley, then an unknown songwriter who somehow recruited a high-profile cast for each. A Civil War saga from the Southern perspective, White Mansions suffers from caricature and cliché but benefits from signature contributions by Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, and Eric Clapton. Jesse James has more focus and narrative momentum, with Levon Helm, Johnny Cash, and Emmylou Harris in lead roles. Though the albums are more noteworthy for artistic ambition than memorable material, Kennerley subsequently became a successful Nashville songwriter and Harris's husband from 1985 to 1993. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Legend of Jesse James.......2007-05-13
I had heard of this album in 1981 or so. Although I have the LP I wanted the
CD also. I really like the story telling aspect of this cd. Starting with the
first tract completely through the last. Also, the caliber of the singers
included really pleased me. Charlie Daniels, Johnny Cash and Levon Helm's
voices are so well suited for the characters that they portray. It also made
me interested enough to do a little history reading on the real Jesse James.
History would be a lot more interesting to people, I think, if more were
presented in such a well done way.
A Gem.......2007-04-11
My husband bought the LP years ago and pretty much wore it out. When I bought this CD for him as a gift he was thrilled to hear elements of the recordings he says he never heard on the LP. We are both very happy with this CD and have told many of our friends and relatives who are interested in the history of the US during the civil war and post civil war period. I wish they would make a video of this even if they have to recast the parts with contemporary singers to replace those who have left this planet.
Two Magnificent and Historically Accurate Song Cycles About the American South.......2006-09-01
I accidentally ran into the cassette version of "The Story of Jesse James" probably shortly after the cassette was released. My 35 year old daughter remembers well hearing it played over and over again, when she was a child. Naturally, the tape finally wore out and I had no idea where to find another copy. I felt an unbelievable sense of loss because of this for many years, until I recently decided to search "Jesse" on Amazon.com, hoping to find that it had been re-released as a CD.
When I found that "White Mansions", which I had never even heard of before, had been combined into a double CD set with "Jesse", I was ecstatic and I immediately ordered two copies of the set, one for my car and one for my house. I found that I had to immerse myself in hearing "Jesse", until my "thirst" for it had been satisfied, before I could bring myself to listen seriously to "White Mansions". However, the Civil War/the War Between the States/the War of Northern Aggression/the Late Unpleasantness, as it is variously called, has always extremely interested me and filled me with great sadness, especially since most people today do not understand the complexities of the war, its many heart-breaking aspects, and how lasting its influence has been on our country.
These song cycles are replete with superb music and equally superb singers whose voices fit the characters who tell the story of the Civil War from the Southern white point of view in "White Mansions" and the story of Jesse James and the James-Younger Gang in "The Story of Jesse James". These song cycles are most highly recommended by me, however, not only because of their superb music and vocalists, but also because they are historically so accurate. I am a history buff and I know Civil War history and the lives and activities of the James brothers and the Younger brothers very well. My only bone to pick with the cycles is the song "High Walls" on "Jesse". Although I enjoy the song greatly, I personally do not believe that Jesse James ever was so self-pitying, although he probably did regret the path that he had chosen, after he had matured and had become a loving husband and father who had decided to settle down on a farm with his family.
I most highly recommend this set to anyone who appreciates the best in country music, to anyone who is interested in the Civil War, especially those who are interested in the different points of view of its Southern caucasian socio-economic groups, and/or to those who are interested in the war's resulting production of some of our nation's most notorious outlaws. I am now also so emotionally involved in "White Mansions", as well as in "Jesse", that today, I literally burst out with a loud exclamation concerning what had just been sung in one of its songs, while I was driving my car, startling my friend who was riding with me and embarrassing myself!
A secret treasure!.......2006-02-17
I bought "The legend of Jesse James" vinyl LP in 1980 when I was 17 and was immediately struck by the solid writing, emotional narrative and excellent musicianship found on this concept album. I remember "One more shot" got some airplay on country radio stations at the time, but without the rest of the album to provide the appropriate context, the single didn't have much impact. One listen to the entire album, and it's hard not to be impressed by this collection of country/folk/rock jewels.
This 2-CD set was my first introduction to "White Mansions", Paul Kennerley's original Southern Americana musical history lesson. This album is as well produced and the song writing as strong as on "Jesse James". However, this collection is not as emotionally engaging as the tracks on "Jesse James". The performances are all first rate and Waylon Jennings' vocals on this album are perhaps his best ever and proves that he was at his peak in the late 1970s!
Anyone that listens to this compilation of two great country concept albums will become instant fans. I sincerely hope more people will find this secret treasure.
The CD to save if your house was on fire!.......2005-12-04
White Mansions and especially The Legend of Jesse James gives me chills when I listen to it. I grew up in Clay County,Missouri right up the road from the James Farm. This music is so authentic in the style and the way the voices sound as if they are truly Missouri locals. Anybody who knows the true outlaw story of the James Boys knows this cd is so dead on it will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Jesse James is not just a train robber but a true southern farmer turned guerilla who just wanted his money back from the Yankee Feds. This CD has the best I believe of Waylon & Jessi, Johnny Cash and Levon Helm singing in a southern rock style that will have you swilling sweetea out of a mason jar. If you like hog callers and mules, tobacco and whiskey culture and realize the Civil War really started on the southern Frontier in Missouri, buy this you will play it for years!!!

Amazing Grace, a compilation of well-known gospel standards, brings together some of country music's brightest stars. From Lari White's understated delivery of the title track to Martina McBride's mandolin led version of "How Great Thou Art" to the Charlie Daniels Band's soulful rendering of "Kneel at the Cross," Amazing Grace is a real treat for fans of both secular country music and white Southern gospel. Accompanied by a full band including a bittersweet fiddle and a steel guitar, Paul Overstreet kicks up the tempo with "A Mansion Over the Hilltop," while Shenandoah's "Beulah Land" recalls both Glen Campbell's take on high-lonesome balladry as well as the tight harmonies of Alabama. And sung by the sweetest voices of the genre, two of the loveliest tracks on the record are born of the bluegrass gospel tradition: "I'd Rather Have Jesus" and "Precious Memories," performed by Alison Krauss and the Cox Family and Emmylou Harris, respectively. --Paige La Grone
Customer Reviews:
Not Bad At All,.......2006-08-26
This is a pretty decent cd. The music is beautifully done and it is awesome. It might be a little slow, but it is relaxing. there is only one song i really liked on this cd and it is, Wich Of Couse, Amazing Grace.
Country at its best!.......2005-01-29
This Cd is awesome I've had it for quite some time. Shenandoah does one of my fav versions of Beulah Land. A blessing everytime I listen to it......STILL!
Slow, maybe, but Beautifully Slow.......2004-05-08
I honestly don't understand why anyone would want to hear "Amazing Grace" any other way but slow. Lari White sings it beautifully, with reverence. That's the way most of these tracks are. The females are the highlight. Lari White, Martina McBride, Susan Ashton, Allison Krause, and of course Emmylou. The production values are better than you can find on any country gospel album. I think Martina McBride's "How Great Thou Art" is being played on loudspeaker at the pearly gates for eternity. I'm not overly religious or emotional, but this album sooths my soul and brings a tear to my eye.
A real blessing!.......2003-07-05
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! This TRADITIONAL version of these timeless classics really brings back the memories. What wonderful rendtions performed with the original scores and at a worshipful and appreciative tempo. This is not a youthful exciting version of the classics, this is the GOOD STUFF! The way I remember them, you can hear the sincereity and praise in the artists voices! This is a vocal and spiritual homecoming.
very good, but I like Volume 2 better.......2002-12-21
I bought Volume 2 first, and liked it so much, I bought volume 1, but given the choice, I'd pick volume 2. This CD does have a much slower pace, but every song is quite lovely. You can't beat John Berry's "Blessed Assurance". A good choice if these are some of your favorite songs.

Beautiful.......2007-06-14
This CD is a must have for any Mormon Tabernacle Choir fans. The music is very reverent and gentle, and should also appeal to those not from the LDS church, seeing as how most of the music is common to the wider Christian community. This CD is a fantastic addition to any music collection.
A few bright spots, but also some disappointments.......2007-01-19
It Is Well With My Soul is one of my favorite-favorites and that is the main reason why I bought the CD; it turned out to be a huge let down on this album, they rearranged it so much that I almost didn't recognize it. Be Still My Soul is another reason why I bought it and it's good, but not great. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is where it starts to get good. The last two songs "Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends"
and "Come, Let Us Anew" are very good reasons to buy this CD, they each have truely powerful passages and make the CD worth having. The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs 2006 release entitled Then Sings My Soul is by far the best that I've heard from them.
This CD Deserves SIX Stars!.......2005-11-05
However, the rating scale has a limit of five. I own over 700 CDs of virtually every type of music. Peace Like A River belongs in a class by itself! I've never written a review before but, after listening to this STUNNING performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I feel compelled to share my praise with that of the five other reviewers. If I were limited to one word, I would use the word "SUPERB" to describe this beautiful and moving CD. SIX stars for Peace Like a River! BRAVO!!!
every good adjective .......2005-08-06
This album is all beauty and solace. The singing is pristine, the arrangements lush and often stirring--never saccharine. As with the previous reviewer, my first listing of "Peace Like a River" brought me to tears (especially "Peace Like a River," the sopranos in "Swing Low," and the bagpipes in "Thou Gracious God"). Buy this one.
Fabulous!.......2005-05-29
The perfect recording to help you recover from a long, hard day. Showcasing the MTC's "new" sound in contemporary choral arrangements with its own orchestra and conductor, "Peace Like a River" brought tears to my eyes in selection after selection during my first listen -- and I'm not normally an emotional person! The title song together with "Deep River," "Swing Low" and "Be Still My Soul" are alone worth the cost of the recording. Get this one!

Awesome Christian Rock.......2005-05-06
There can't be too many bigger White Heart fans out there than I am. I will qualify that to mean that I'm a lover of all of their material in the Rick Florian era. Being very familiar with all of that era's material, I would rate 'Tales' as the best of White Heart's albums. Of my eleven favorite White Heart songs, four come from 'Tales'. Although I believe that their message isn't as strong as it was in 'Powerhouse', the quality of the music, each individual song as well as the whole album, is superior here. If you like power drums, then this is your CD!!! The four brightest stars on this album are:
1) Silhouette. This song has such a unique sound to it, really different from White Hearts usual rock songs and ballads. This is my 3rd favorite of all their songs. Spine tingling....I can't get enough of this song!
2) Who Owns You. White Heart has never rocked better than on this song. Very strong lyrics, guitars, drums. Rock lovers will find this as an instant favorite!
3) Unchain. One of White Heart's most beautiful songs. So wonderfully sung and very radio friendly. This song would appeal to any music lover.
4) His Heart Was Always In It. One of my very first favorites! Very powerful rock and roll with a fantastic message. You'll love the drumming here too! This song has to be included among the very top Christian rock songs ever.
This album has no weak tracks. Other highlights not mentioned above: Vendetta, Raging of the Moon, Say the Word and Light a Candle. All of those would be the top song or two on any other album. If you buy any White Heart CD, or want to start with one, this is what you should get!
Their best recording.......2004-10-12
When this cd came out over a decade ago, White Heart was just another struggling CCM band. They had their hits from previous cds ("Seventy Times Seven", "Fly Eagle Fly", "Bye Bye Babylon" and too many others to mention), but they had yet to have a "perfect" cd. Tales of Wonder fixed that forever. This was ground-breaking and record-setting. For the first time ever, every song on a cd was released as a single--and all charted in the top 10! This saw the first incarnation of the band with Jon Knox as the drummer (formerly of Adam Again) and these guys took it to a whole new level! "Raging of the Moon" started it off with a rocking bang and it never let up. "Gabriella" will haunt you with it's deep lyrics (and it must have worked, because Mark Gershmel met his "Gabriella" while touring for this cd with Rachel Rachel in their keyboardist Brynn Beltraine). One thing that always grabbed me about White Heart was the fact that they traded lead singing duties between Rick Florian and Mark. Both men had strong vocals, but both had weaknesses. Mark could sing a slower, more emotional song while Rick could rock the house with the harder ones. These guys made magic together, and it's a shame to see them gone. Thankfully, they were able to pull off this beauty before it was all over. They made 3 other cds after this one, but nothing could match the brilliance of this one. Highly recommended.
Taught me Christian music isn't all hymns & sleepy tunes.......2003-07-23
I first heard this album when I was a freshman in High School, and it was then that I learned of Christian Rock. This album not only touched me (especially "Gabriella"), but it introduced me to a new world. The music touched me and entertained me. I highly reccomend trying this CD.

This album includes all the known early works from the late 1920s early 1930s and the sessions at the end of the 1930s or beginning of the 1940s. Sound quality is acceptable and the music, of course is outstanding. I gave it 5 stars because I've yet to find a better purchase by this artist.

Great AOR album.......2007-02-07
Melodic rock at its best. Great vocals, this singer has a killer voice and lets it show. Highly recommended!
FREEDOM GRANTED.......2006-02-14
As it relates to music, I define the word "classic" as that which doesn't get relegated to that time in which it was created. I consider it to be a classic if it sounds current years after its initial release (usually 10 years or more). White Heart's "Freedom" cd was released in 1989 and yet nothing about it sounds dated. Brown Bannister's production is as sparkling today as it was when it was originally released approximately 17 years ago as of this review. There are moments of great density ("Bye Bye Babylon") as well as moments of spacious separation (the first 2 minutes of "Let The Kingdom Come"). The musicianship is of the same quality as Yes (90125 era), Kansas and Toto. Take the best and most accessible aspects of those bands, combine them together and you'll get an idea of how "Freedom" sounds. The song writing is incredible. All out rock workouts ("Power Tools", "Bye Bye Babylon") are combined with more grooved based songs ("Invitation"), ballads that aren't over wrought ("The River Will Flow") and a few unexpected styles ("Sing Your Freedom"'s Motown like chorus). The lyrics and singing are heart felt and never clique. Lead singer Ric Florian (if you're familiar with the band, you know he spelled his name differently on every album) has a voice quite unlike any I've heard and it fits perfectly with what the band does on this cd. Drummer Chris McHugh's style is aggressive and rock solid. Lead guitarist Gordon Kennedy is as versatile as they come. Bassist Tommy Simms' funk/r&b background gives the bottom-end its punch. Rhythm guitarist Billy Smiley and keyboard/2nd lead vocalist Mark Gerschmehl are the anchors. As compared to this lineup's previous cds ("Don't Wait For The Movie", "Emergency Broadcast") when Smiley and Gerschmehl were the chief song writers, everyone contributed almost equally which greatly increased the cohesive sound achieved on this release.
My overall favorite White Heart album.......2006-01-29
In 1989, White Heart released Freedom, the last of their three albums on their contract with Sparrow Records. Freedom is my overall favorite White Heart album, featuring vocalist Rick Florian, guitarists Billy Smiley and Gordon Kennedy, keyboardist Mark Gersmehl, bassist Tommy Simms and drummer Chris McHugh--probably the best lineup in the band's history. This album has everything from kickin' rock tracks to pop to beautiful ballads. My overall favorite songs here include Let the Kingdom Come, Over Me, Invitation, Set the Bridge on Fire and I'll Meet You There. Other enjoyable songs include Bye Bye Babylon, Power Tools, Sing Your Freedom and The River Will Flow. This is not only my overall favorite White Heart album, not only one of my favorite Christian rock albums, but one of my favorite rock albums PERIOD.
Best Rock Record EVER!!.......2005-04-20
This is a great album - a classic! This album has everything that makes a classic album - songs that work seperately and together. The Brown Bannister produced albums best tracks "Kingdom Come", "Power Tools" and "Invitation" are better than almost any secular album, let alone a CCM one. The only album that is better is Joshua Tree by U2. This is the CD you HAVE TO OWN!!!!!

Broaden your 'blue' horizons!.......2003-07-22
The recent surge in popularity of Bluegrass is in no small way partly down to Rounder label' own roster of amazing `grass talent some of the most popular names appearing on this compilation.
While Alison Krauss, The Cox Family and Rhonda Vincent should all be familiar names to those who regularly browse the CD racks- if you're discovering this music for the first time, it's the less well known artists that really deserve your attention here. From Weary Hearts joyous toe-tapper `Power in the Blood' to Tony Rice' jazz infused rendition of `Wayfaring Stranger' this modern collection is a far cry from the endless stream of `Duelling Banjo' CD's presently clogging up the Bluegrass section in you're local record store. If the awe inspiring multi-part harmonies of the Johnston Mountain Boys `Harbor of Love' doesn't raise you Heavenwards, then you must already be there- check your pulse pilgrim!
Note: The insightful liner notes are penned by Union Station's own multi-talented Ron Block whose songs and indeed musicianship are apparent on this and many other bluegrass/country artists albums.

RCA has repackaged and reshuffled Elvis Presley's Christmas canon yet again, coming up with the 25-track, chronologically sequenced collection pulled from 1957's stunning Elvis' Christmas Album and 1971's lesser Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas. Just like the U.S. postage stamps chronicling the svelte and the bloated Elvis, this set segments the singer's career into two parts. As a result, it has something for everyone, except perhaps Irving Berlin, who attempted to get Elvis's '57 recording of "White Christmas" banned from radio play, deeming it "vulgar and disrespectful." It was, which is part of why the drastically rearranged tune is so memorable, as the then-young singer masticated the contemporary classic, adding his idiosyncratic dynamics and vocal trills; he turned a white Christmas into white trash with splendid results. Equally irreverent and just as riveting is the King's gritty take on Leiber and Stoller's "Santa Claus Is Back in Town." Also tucked under the tree is his rollicking "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)" with the Jordanaires, and the wistful "I'll Be Home for Christmas," which cemented his reputation as pop's top dreamboat. And who can forget the song that changed the hue of Yuletide, "Blue Christmas"? --Jaan Uhelszki

Both of Elvis orginal Christmas albums are here.......2005-12-29
This CD has all the songs that were released on Elvis' Christmas albums. Elvis recorded and released 20 Christmas songs during his career. All 20 Christmas songs are included here, plus 5 non-Christmas songs that were originally included on one of his Christmas albums.
Eight Christmas songs were included in his original 1957 Christmas album along with the 4 Gospel songs from the "Peace In The Valley" EP. His orginal Christmas album was repackaged and re-released in 1970 with the 4 Gospel songs being replaced by "If Every Day was Like Christmas" and the non-Christmas song "Mama Liked The Roses." In 1971 his final Christmas album was released "The Wonderful World of Christmas" which included 11 Christmas songs.
Elvis' performance on the songs from both versions of his Christmas album are excellent! Several of these recordings have become Christmas classics, still receiving significant radio airplay nearly 50 years after they were recorded! The songs and performances from "The Wonderful World of Christmas" are just not as strong. Elvis' voice seems to be straining on some of the songs and the material is just not as strong as the earlier recordings.
If you are looking for every song that was included on an Elvis Christmas album (including non-Christmas songs), this is the collection for you. However, if you are just wanting a comprehensive collection of Elvis Christmas music, you would do better to buy the "If Every Day Was Like Christmas" CD. It contains all 20 Christmas songs found here in addition to 4 alternate takes not available anywhere else.
Great CD.......2004-12-25
I purchased this CD a few weeks ago. I didn't play it much at first. I had other Christmas CD's that I enjoy to listen to each year. However, the last few days I couldn't get enough of listening to the Elvis' White Christmas CD. I will probably listen to it for a few weeks after Christmas, since I enjoy it so much.
One song that seems to strike a cord with me is "If I get Home on Christmas Day". The one line in the song about being half a world away reminds me of our troops abroad. I am surprised that this song has not gotten much, if any, air play due to this. I would have expected the radio stations to do some kind of mix of the song with holiday messages from their loved ones from abroad, as they have done with other songs over the past couple of years.
Bottom line, this CD is a must buy.
Very good Elvis Christmas collection.......2004-12-17
I've seen several people complain about this disc and I have to say, I don't understand it. This disc has all great songs, great sound, what more do you want? It does contain 4 of his '57 gospel songs and his '69 "Mama Liked The roses", which are non-Christmas, but I don't see the problem. They fit in well with the Christmas songs and all of his great Christmas songs are here. I highly recommend this disc.
If you love Elvis, you'll love this!.......2003-12-21
I've read the reviews for this cd and disagree w/them. I bought this 2 years ago, and love to listen to it every Christmas. Not sure whats NOT TO LIKE?!?! Its fun, Elvis has a great voice, and it has some great songs. Please give it a try. Buy it used if you like, but this is a wonderful cd.
I really enjoyed this CD.......2003-11-10
I have really enjoyed listening to this CD, although the new CD, Christmas Peace has come out. I still thought this CD was pretty good.

The material on this album is from White's heyday in the mid-1940s, when he was one of folk music's most influential stars. An accomplished guitarist with a beautiful, warm voice, his topical protest and rallying songs anticipated the marriage of folk and social issues of the '50s and '60s. He blended the folk roots of Leadbelly with politics of Paul Robeson and Pete Seeger. In fact, on this album, he's accompanied by Burl Ives, Alan Lomax, Pete Seeger, Brownie McGee, Sonny Terry, and Leadbelly himself. But because the material is from the '40s, White was equally concerned about oppression by landlords, fascists, and segregationists. Free and Equal Blues is a fascinating snapshot that captures White's righteous dignity and stellar artistry. --Richard Price

Wonderful--Josh White's Free and Equal Blues.......2001-04-03
Josh White's Free and Equal Blues is a wonderful album, full of personal and political stories. Just the liner notes about Mr. White's life are worth the price of the CD, but the songs are truly glorious. Some are funny, and some are heartbreaking, but all of them are sung with great feeling and a gorgeous, smooth voice. It's been said that some of his songs are predecessors to rap music. Whether that's true or not, Josh White's music is a real treat, even after more than 60 years. Get it!

Great Blues.......2000-11-07
Josh White can rip your heart out with his blues, especially on songs like "One Meat Ball" (my personal favorite) and "Strange Fruit" (an even stronger version than Billie Holliday's). He has an intensity and style all his own, and I found this album to be a good cross-section of his work. His clear, pure voice adds to the pathos in an ironic way, and the accompanying guitar work is excellent. When you listen to his music, you get a real feel for what it's like to be down with no hope of ever getting up. His artistic mastery is unsurpassed.
