In These Days

Editorial Reviews
The Dallas Morning News, April 3, 1999
What a gem. This 18-song 1997 album is now making its retail debut. The guy connects with the audience. And its none of that generic "How ya'll doin'?" dialogue that just hangs there in so many forced live albums. A real treat for those of us who were not fortunate enough to be present for the live recordings. A treasure like In These Days is an unexpected bonus for fans of this simple but substantial artist. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

The magical triad behind Rushmore's spunky, starry-eyed soundtrack--music supervisor Randall Poster, composer Mark Mothersbaugh, and director Wes Anderson--leaps forward a decade from that beloved soundtrack's '60s gems, in the process adopting a more pensive feel for The Royal Tenenbaums' musical backdrop. It may lack the euphoric sing-along feel of, say, Creation's "Makin' Time," but the rock and folk tracks here perfectly match the film's crumbling characters and their dilapidated relationships. The Ramones' "Judy Is a Punk" is a burst of nostalgic rebellion but surely causes a sad twinge in light of Joey Ramone's untimely death in 2001; gloom-folker Nick Drake's "Fly" and Elliott Smith's excellently depressing "Needle in the Hay"--which is used to chilling effect during a wrist-slashing scene--further deepen the dark thread running through Tenenbaums. But those who prefer the sunny disposition of Rushmore will be thrilled by the calming concoctions of Mothersbaugh, who heralds the coming of a new scene with graceful woodwind/string parts ("Scrapping and Yelling") and playful sitar pieces ("Pagoda's Theme"). Throw in the Clash's squalling "Police & Thieves" and the Velvet Underground's petal-soft "Stephanie Says" and you've got another winning soundtrack from the film biz's most in-tune music lovers. Tenenbaum or not, you can go home again. --Kristy Martin

I like this soundtrack because its very laid back. Enjoyable songs that help you relax.

4 out of 5 stars Help trying to figure out the title of a song.......2006-04-17

Hey, maybe you guys can help me, does anyone know the title of the song playing on a radio while owen wilson is getting high (or preparing to do so) with his friends and his dad and brother step in and tell him they want to help him. I really love that song and i have no idea what the title is

4 out of 5 stars omitted song.......2006-02-01

For anyone interested, one song which was omitted from the soundtract which has not been mentioned is:

Emitt Rhodes - Lullabye

A beautiful track played in the scence where Royal is lying in his bed sucking down a shake and reading a book when Chas say "lights out old man" and switchs off the light. One of my fav songs in the movie along side the rolling stones - she smiled sweetly. sadly both songs were omitted but still a beautiful soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Where's Van Morrison?!.......2005-03-16

This is a near-perfect collection of 60's and 70's pop and folk. The sad but hopeful vibe of the songs fits the movie's tone perfectly and you can't really agrue with songs like "Stephanie Says." it's also nice to hear the two Nico cuts since Nico's solo work really doesn't get the acclaim it deserves these days. My problem with this album is that it favors symphonic songs from the film instead of pop songs also used in it such as "Ruby Tuesday" and Van Morrison's "Everyone." I'm really bummed about the exclusion of "Everyone" because i thought it closed the movie so well. They should have released the score and the soundtrack separately so all these great songs could be included.

1 out of 5 stars The Royal Tenenbaums Soundtrack.......2005-03-14

The Collector's Edition Soundtrack leaves out two great Rolling Stones' tunes She Smiled Sweetly & Ruby Tuesday. Also left to the winds is John Lennon's Look at Me, the Clash's Rock the Kazbah. The First Edition leaves a few tunes off too but it is a far better Soundtrack. Puckstar

5 out of 5 stars Life and Death On The Great White Way.......2007-06-24

Bob Fosse's 1979 ALL THAT JAZZ is perhaps most famous for the extreme reaction it provokes: you either love it or you hate it. There is no middle ground.

Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a celebrated stage and film director famous for creating dance numbers with a super sexy style--and truly chaotic professional and personal life. Even as he edits a film he has recently directed, he begins rehearsals for a new Broadway show. Even as he duels with his acidic show-biz ex-wife over the needs of their daughter, he cheats on his girl friend with any lovely chorus girl who wants to fall across his bed. He goes from crisis to crisis in a round of late nights fueled by nicotine, caffine, alcohol, and drugs--and he loves every ego-gratifying moment of it. What he does not love is the heart attack he has in the middle of it all.

What divides viewers is not so much the plot as the overall style of the film. Like Joe Gideon, Bob Fosse (1927-1987) was most famous for his musicals, which were often akin to beautiful but distinctly dark hallucinations of super-stylized motion showing lots of skin. With ALL THAT JAZZ, Fosse takes his unique, highly surrealistic musical style and combines it with the similarly surrealistic approach of such master directors as Fellini. The result is a film that shifts between past, present, and future with glittering musical numbers that leap from the mind of Gideon himself to make wry comment on his egocentric madness--and in which beautiful show girls become the personification of death.

As Joe Gideon, Roy Scheider (perhaps best known for his tough-cop role in THE FRENCH CONNECTION) truly gives the performance of his career; he is amazing in the role of the driven, egocentric director/choreographer who will stop at nothing to pursue his desires, professional or otherwise. The film also gives us two performers who rarely appear on screen: Leland Palmer as Gideon's ex-wife Audrey Paris (a role based on Gwen Verdon) and Ann Rhineking as Gideon's long-suffering dancer-girlfried Kate Jagger (a role, ironically, based on herself.) Both prove extremely memorable--as does Ben Vereen, a performer I do not usually like, appearing here in as the emcee of Gideon's final and most memorable hallucination.

The cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno is sharp, clean, disquieting, and manages to convey the New York of the late 1970s in remarkable detail; the editing by Alan Heim (who also worked on such memorable films as NETWORK and STAR 80) is also memorable. Indeed, be it lighting, costumes, casting, or overall art design it is virtually impossible to fault the film at any level. Even so--ALL THAT JAZZ remains as likely to divide viewers today as it did in 1979. Movie musicals have changed a great deal over the past decade or so, but ALL THAT JAZZ remains a unique offering. You either get it or you don't; you either like it or you hate it.

There are at least two DVDs on the market. One is a no-frills edition with a good transfer; the other offers several bells and whistles that fans of the film will enjoy. Recommended in either version.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-06-18

A Fosse lovers must see. I was up for the main group of dancers for this movie oh so many years ago. I remember what I wore to the audition. We all showed up at the St. James theatre in NYC even though there was no audition notice in the trades and no announcement. I remember Fosse coming on the stage and laughing saying "how the hell did you all know about this...?" Well, word of mouth among the gypsies, that's how! He had already chosen his dancers but he liked to see what was around just in case. I was always called back and got to the last call back. Too bad right! Well the rest is history...get this dvd, it is a piece of history and a kind of dance, director, choreographer and discipline that no longer exists. SO sad!

4 out of 5 stars Well executed, entertaining, musical.......2007-03-25

The film is appearantly a loose auto-biographical account of the film's director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Chicago, Star 80). A scrutinizing look at obsession leading to self destruction and finally the transference of pain to others. The film has too many technical high points to mention. Choreography goes without mention and has been mimicked by modern artists, sometimes blatantly. The screenplay is complex enough to be interesting but remains in the realm of 'easily digestible.'

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Mix.......2007-02-24

Since I adore the movie, I can't help but love the soundtrack to All That Jazz. I'm not sure this CD would move every listener as it does me, but I see every scene as I listen and can't help but dance along now and then. Like the movie, this soundtrack is bittersweet and very raw in some places, cheeky and sentimental in others. For a Fosse junkie like me, it's a must have.

5 out of 5 stars "Bye, bye love"...........2007-02-09

Loved the DVD and this CD is just as entertaining. George Benson oozes showmanship so much so that it comes across just listening. "On Broadway and Bye bye love" are the stand out's.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent collection from a sincere singer songwriter........2006-05-23

I have had the pleasure of seeing Billy in concert at least 7 times. Although this recording doesn't come close to the total package which is a Billy Crockett concert, it is a good taste of some of Billy's best songs and stories.

5 out of 5 stars Best live album I've heard.......2001-05-31

Billy doesn't get to your town much or at all? Me neither. But this album is the cure! It has more of a "you are there" feel than any other live album I've heard. It also has several songs that are only on out-of-print studio albums, too. All that, plus the recitation of "The Crockosaurus", add up to a must-have for any fan of Billy's music.

4 out of 5 stars Very Fun Christian Music!.......2000-06-20

Billie Crockett has a number of light-hearted Christian Songs on this album. My personal favorite is "The Wake up Song" which is a fantastic song to brighten your morning and put a smile on your face. I also enjoyed "41 Lawnmowers" and many others, which use lighthearted words to make you think about serious issues in the life of Christians. The only problem I find with the album is that it is a "live" album - and the background noise can be somewhat distracting at times. However, if that doesn't bother you, the album gives a good variety of Billy Crockett's best songs.

The best "Sacred Harp" or "Shape Note" type singing that I've heard. The various renditons are clear and harmonious.

          Album Description

you may get lost in this sensual landscape of growls and whispers here, but there's a pop foundation to these melodies that will follow you for days. Her voice will make you stop in your tracks, but it's the lyrics that spicer really wants you to hear.

          5 out of 5 stars Seamless .......2007-01-18

I had the pleasure of meeting and hearing Amilia at Lamb's Retreat in Harbor Springs, MI. this past November. She played a few tracks from Seamless on solo keyboard, and when I first heard "Delayed Effect," I was hooked. I bought the cd and could not wait to get home to hear the rest of it. Her voice is gorgeous, her lyrics are thoughtful, and her melodies are mesmerizing. The arrangements are simple and beautiful, and the production is, as the title aptly suggests, seamless. From the opening track to the unlisted 14th track, this recording will hook you and happily reel you in! After 2 months, not a day goes by that I don't either play the disc or catch myself singing/humming one of her songs.

Just saw Amilia in the Berkshires at Guthrie Center. She was excellent, compelling and riveting!

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars They are great.......2004-10-14

This is a great album, I saw Powderfinger a couple times in San Francisco a couple years ago. If they happen to be in your area (usually in a smaller venue), go see them, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great complement to the Powderfinger collection.......2004-09-23

I've been a Powderfinger fan for three years now, but I've never managed to see them in concert. Seems they haven't made a tour of the states (yet). Well, this is the closest we're going to get for a while!
The discs are great -- the first disc is loud, arena sized, and energetic. Highlights (for me) are Thrillology, Passenger, and My Happiness. The overall sound quality is great; this is definitely a concert album, but a well produced one.
The second disc is more intimate, light-hearted, and shows the band really having a fun time with it.
Bottom line: if you're a Powderfinger fan, you won't be disappointed!
