They were together just five years, and between the potent era of 1969-`71, Creedence Clearwater Revival reached the Top 10 with nine different singles, an accomplishment the band's architect John Fogerty has cracked just once ("The Old Man Down the Road") since CCR's demise in 1972. John Fogerty has finally made peace with his old label, Fantasy Records. One of the results of this is the first ever assemblage of his Creedence Clearwater Revival hits with his less classic solo work. The Long Road Home is a mixed bag, though. Since there are plenty of worthy Creedence hits packages, fans likely already own 14 of these 25 tracks (four more CCR songs appear in recently recorded concert versions). But there's never been a compilation of Fogerty's inconsistent, occasionally inspired solo career, and unfortunately only seven tunes from six studio discs make the cut. There are no selections from the spotty Eye of the Zombie or his first post-Creedence covers album, the excellent Blue Ridge Rangers. Only two tracks from 1975's terrific yet obscure John Fogerty make an appearance, and both are represented in spirited but inferior live performances. The Long Road Home remains an enjoyable listen, but these limitations prevent it from living up to its "ultimate" subtitle. --Hal Horowitz

Wonderful, nostalgic CD!.......2007-06-27

I made a wise choice in selecting this CD. It's got all my favorite John Fogerty/CCR songs on it.

Simplistic.......2007-06-18

This is a gem I didn't know had been released over a year ago. CCR had very simple music (no big bands), understandable lyrics and a comedic twist that in some ways was ahead of it's time. Most lyrics were written by John Fogerty and though the band only lasted about 5 years, John went on to become a very very good single artist (Old Man Down The Road, etc). Here we have some of CCR's greatest hits (some fans will be disappointed with some that were not included), some from John's single forays and some that are live. I don't care for live albums much but these are well recorded. Great liner notes are included which will give you a capsule view of John and the bands career. Chronicle volume 1 by CCR would be a great companion with this one.

Amazon refuses to issue me a credit and I'm out $50. Don't ever take advantage of their free shipping option. You may never get your order!

The best CCR as well as John Fogerty coll........2007-05-23

This is a great, and I think the best Creedence Clearwater best of. I prefer it in part because of the bonus of Fogerty's best solo material, which holds up its head well in the lofty company of his former band's greatest hits, and also because it avoids the long, jam-like tracks (Grapevine, etc.) that just are not on par with the shorter tracks from the CCR catalog. While one need not be religious about it, there is a reason that most great rock and roll songs are executed in around three minutes or less. This collection is rock solid--a real pleasure. Even a few live tracks and a scrambled sequence add to the cohesion and the enjoyment rather than detract from it. I have had the standard CCR collections, and I prefer this one. There is also a non-musical reason to get it. If you tend to believe John Fogerty, and I do, that he was ripped off and mistreated by his record co. and even fellow band-mates (I like democracy most of the time myself, but John conceived and did the conceptual theme, the lead guitar, the great songwriting, the singing, etc. all himself, for hit after hit after hit, so it was a bit silly for his band members to demand equal time, however worthy their instrumental contributions may have been) there is an extra-musical reason to buy this as well. After the long years of bitter lawsuits, including one where Fogerty was brought to court charged with stealing from songs he himself had written, the higher up at CCR's label Fantasy finally left. This opened the door for smarter and cooler, if not more ethical, heads to prevail at Fantasy. After decades of not owning the music he had written and created, etc., John finally got some consideration. He was welcomed home (thus the title) at last and offered the deal of doing this collection of his old CCR and newer solo material and odd live track, making a glorious collection and long-deserved victory and vindication of sorts. Good for him. Who knows how many years the nonsense under his nemesis took off John's life, but here's hoping this puts 'em back. Thank you John--we are happy for you!

Messin' with Success.......2007-07-03

First off, I absolutely love the Flower Kings and anxiously await their next release. This one though.....
OK, let me get this off my chest first - why, oh why would you play with the perfection that is the original "Church of Your Heart"? When I saw this on the CD's pre-release playlist on the TFK website, I was counting the days until it arrived just to hear a remastering of this song. (I think all TFK fans can agree that while "Stardust We Are" is one of the best albums of all time, it is also one compressed sonic mess). But instead of a nice clean remastering, we get a complete remix, and, gasp - an entire section of the song - a critical section in my eyes - is totally gone! Disappointed hardly covers it.
And therein lies the problem, for me. Most of these songs weren't just remastered, they were remixed as well. Instruments are added or taken away, changing the complexion of the songs in someways good but mostly not. For the most part, the new productions just don't stand up to the old. Several tunes, like "World Without a Heart" sound lifeless, are missing key instrumental parts (where is the lovely piano part in WWAH?) or have had the sometimes rough edges dulled down until they don't have the same impact the originals did.
Roine evidently has disdained the use of reverb for the new mixes, and for me, this new "dry" sound doesn't serve this type of music well.
Overall, it WAS a somewhat fun first listen, and of course the songs are pretty much wonderful anyway, but while there are great moments, I can't imagine listening to this one again anytime soon.
Having said that, thanks Roine for the effort - the liner notes are indeed exceptional, and maybe there is hope that you'll find time to go back and remaster (but NOT remix) the classic TFK albums like Stardust We Are, Flower Power and Rainmaker. Wouldja, please????

Nothing Exciting.......2007-07-02

The Flower Kings (Roine Stolt) take some of their shorter progressive rock tracks and re-mix and remaster them. The chosen list is pretty good and covers their entire career up to this point. The extra, never released track "Little Deceiver" from the Rainmaker sessions is nothing special.

The remixing doesn't seems to improve the songs much and actually seems to make them 'softer.' I word I could use is 'pillowy'....almost giving some of the slower parts of songs a new-age feel to them (not a good thing in my opinion). The punch of the original songs is missing, replaced by a broadening effect to fully take up the sonic range. Another point of dissapontment......should you really mess with "Church of Your Heart?" The classic Flower Kings song has been truncated and the dramatic key change at the last part of the original version is gone. That was the part of the song that got me hooked on the song in the the first place. Also "I am the Sun part II" seems to be truncated as well, and again, the best part of the song, in my opinion, is missing.

Songs picked from newer releases (Adam + Eve and Paradox Hotel) are less affected by the mixing and come off much like the originals.

All-in-all, this is a good collection of Flower King songs, but the remixing doesn't seem that great of an improvement of the originals.

Excellent chronicle of The Flower Kings sound.......2007-06-26

The Road Back Home is a two-disc compilation album put together by Flower Kings leader Roine Stolt. Not only does it feature the band's relatively more compact and "easy listening" cuts, the songs have also been treated to a new mixing job by Stolt. Add to that several newly recorded guitar solos as well as some backing vocals by Roine Stolt and Hasse Froberg. Some of the numbers have just been remixed whilst some others also feature previously unheard passages, instrumentation, and vocal parts.

The song long-time fans will want to hear the most will probably be "Little Deceiver", a leftover from the band's Rainmaker sessions. It is an interesting experiment where the tune wanders off more into Dire Straits-goes-country territory, bringing forth a true solo statement from Stolt and Froberg who are responsible for everything this song has to offer: unusual harmony vocals, cool loops and sound effects, and steady, straightforward drumming.

Also new on the CD is the band's Genesis tribute "Cinema Show", originally recorded in 1998. Being one of the greatest Genesis songs ever, Stolt says the band was rather nervous while recording it, but the result is nothing short of mindblowing. The acoustic guitar tone, the layered melodies, the awesome vocal parts, and last but not the least, Tomas Bodin's mindblowingly beautiful key solo that not only honours Tony Banks' original work but also adds its own touch to it -- everything is phenomenal about this piece. As noted in the liner notes, that solo is testimony that "great keys can be played with emotion without a trace of blues or jazz".

It would be impossible and meaningless to describe each song on this compilation. After all, they all represent a different era of the band; and they are meant to be enjoyed best in their original context. However, the little nuances brought out in the mixing stage do warrant a mention. "Cosmic Lover", for instance, features new vocal and some clarinet addition as well as a heavier focus on rhythm. This brings out the funky aesthetic and underscores the brilliant Beatles-like vocal harmony. "Stupid Girl" has a brand new guitar solo; and truth be told, I can't choose which one I like better cause the new one is truly sublime. Also, the guitar solo of "A Kings Prayer", one of the greatest Flower Kings songs ever, is different. I love how the deep message is conveyed on this one amidst glimmering acoustic guitar notes and McCartney-like vocal arrangements.

The last few minutes of "Church of Your Heart" have been cut off, and rightly so. The result is a more direct and powerful tune driven by tons of organ work by Bodin and soaring harmonies by Hasse Froberg. The African tribal rhythms merge seamlessly with a gorgeous soprano sax arrangement on "Grand Old World" whilst "Monkey Business" proves once again why everything on Unfold the Future is gold. Jonas Reingold's fretless bass, Hasse Bruniusson's percussion rhythms, and Stolt's unmistakable guitars form the musical aspect of the otherwise tragic lyrical theme. Stolt's vocal part in the intro of "The Road Back Home" has been replaced by Hasse's more fitting singing -- perhaps the best Retropolis song with its melodic hook and blazing Hammond elements.

The songs with Pain of Salvation's Daniel Gildenlow providing backing harmonies have mostly been left untouched, such as "Starlight Man" and "Cosmic Circus", but you can still tell a remix was done on them. The somewhat cluttered soundscape layering of the former piece seems totally gone on the reworked version of "Different People" off of Stardust We Are. Unlike the original version, the piece has a stronger psychedelic centre here thanks to Stolt's meticulous remixing, and the melodious flow is more evocative. The backing voices have enhanced this cut greatly as well.

It doesn't matter whether you're a long-time fan or a new listener. Any Flower Kings fan should pick this up in a heart beat and hear these songs in their new format. If you have never heard any of Flower Kings' studio albums, on the other hand, then, depending on the songs you like the best here, you should go and pick it up impromptu. Once you're hooked, you'll want to have their entire discography anyway.

Kudos to Roine Stolt for not only compiling and remixing all these songs, but also for the detailed song-by-song analysis he offers in the liner notes. He even designed the booklet and cover art himself and added some photos as well. The packaging is superb -- it couldn't be any better.

I wish all compilation albums were this amazing.

Since it shares its title with John Fogerty's 2005 career-spanning hits collection, this double-disc concert album (and associated DVD, available separately) is unsurprisingly heavy on the Creedence chestnuts that dominate the guitarist/songwriter's history. In fact, only seven of these 26 tunes are drawn from Fogerty's post-CCR years. The Long Road Home in Concert is a spirited yet surprise-free 90-minute set that plays to Fogerty's blue-collar base with near note-perfect renditions of all the songs any fan would want to hear. His voice is in fine form, the five-piece band duplicates the Creedence parts to perfection, and the crowd responds accordingly. But despite everyone's best intentions and the snappy live sound, it's hard to say that these versions are better than the originals, and, as with a severely truncated "Keep on Chooglin'," they fail to duplicate the musty swamp feel so integral to Fogerty's finest work. Unlike the best live recordings that bring unique interpretations to well-known songs, The Long Road Home in Concert simply rehashes them without much, if any, sense of experimentation. It's as if Fogerty is afraid to offend anyone by not adhering to the established script. The result is a listenable and generally enjoyable artifact that plays to his strengths. But it also can be considered a missed opportunity to bring fresh perspective to Fogerty's revered catalog of American classics. --Hal Horowitz

In response to the other reviewer who wished for longer live versions, try the Fogerty-less "CCR" double live cd of Credence Clearwater Revisited. It has all of the hits as this Fogert concert does. The way it is better is that Grapevine is over 15 minutes long, and Suzie Q is over 10 minutes long! You won't miss the marble-mouthed man! Guaranteed!

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

"Harvest Home" Serves Up a Feast.......2006-03-10

Most CD recordings of choral music do not attract the attention of the population at large, and "Harvest Home" is clearly an exception. Word came to me about this remarkable album through a fellow faculty member at the Boston Conservatory. He was rightly proud of having written two of the arrangements, but prouder still of the fact that it had become a red-hot bestseller through the word-of-mouth network of choristers all over the country. Needless to say, I was curious but a bit skeptical. Generally, things that become that popular have an aesthetic downside. I ordered my copy from Amazon and got it just before I left to go to a concert with a couple of musician friends. We were frankly thrilled with the quality of the singing, the beautifully shaped nuances, and the richness of the several of the arrangements. It is clear that its popularity among choral singers has to do with the musical material, as with its execution. The arrangements are based on mostly religious American folk songs and show off the delicate intonational skills of Dale Warland's legendary group. It's just the kind of thing that church choir members can really appreciate, but unfortunately cannot stand up to repeated listing -- it has to be the work of great composers for me to hear recordings over and over again. Nevertheless, I played it for my choral group, and they jumped all over it. That's the market audience. Bravo, Mr. Warland.

Amazing.......2005-12-26

I've been a fan of the Dale Warland Singers for a long time, and attended many of their concerts. This recording displays perfectly what the choir was capable of. I listen to it constantly. Many of these arrangements are the best I've heard of these songs. "Deep River" is better than that of Chanticleer or Cantus. "She'll be Comin Round the Mountain" is really fun. I got the chance to sing it a few years ago and will never forget it. You NEED to buy this CD. It's well worth the money.

Exquisite.......2005-11-16

I purchased this on a whim and it is been in my 5-disc player ever since. I have always loved choral settings of folk songs and hymns (with one exception - "The Water is Wide" should never ever ever be sung by a chorus - it doesn't work, but it is the only track I skip on this disc). The selections are all old favorites in often harmonically lush arrangements. Hawley's arrangement of "Not One Sparrow" is transcendent and has become my morning prayer, "Lay Me Low" my evening meditation. The singing is as near perfect as can be, musicality is stunning, and technical merits are high. I cannot recommend this disc enough.

Emotional and poignant.......2005-11-07

On Harvest Home, the Dale Warland Singers delve into the rich legacy of mostly American sacred and folk music. With the lush vocal orchestrations and thoughtful arrangements, many of these familiar songs take on new life and emotional depth.

As a boy, I grew up in the Mennonite church tradition and one of the distinctive things about our church services was the a cappella 4-part harmony. As I got older, I thought this was a bit odd and wished we used instruments in church like most people. In looking back now, I am thankful for that tradition and what it taught me about music and harmony.

Throughout high school I was involved with choral groups, doing several programs each year. The first year after high school I spent a few months at a religious school that had a long-standing tradition of chorale music. I well remember the hours of rehearsal to get the song just right, practicing enunciation and dynamics and expression.

So when I hear a group like the Dale Warland Singers, I have a small insight into the dedication it takes to do choral music at the level of this recording. These are singers and a director at the top of their game, with attention to detail everywhere, creativity in the arrangements and technical brilliance. And what a vocal range, with "how low can they go" bass and sopranos that my normal laptop headphones have trouble reproducing without distortion.

I've long been a fan of spirituals; they are at times moving to hear, at times playful and fun (and can be even more fun to sing). This album features a couple of my favorites: "Shall We Gather At The River" and "Deep River". Upon first hearing this rendition of the latter, I was nearly moved to tears by the stark beauty and emotional depth of this arrangement. It's a prime example of the power of music to take us places emotionally and connect us with the deeper feelings and longings of the soul.

In addition to several spirituals, there is a unique variety of other religious pieces pulled from the traditions of Quakers and Baptists among others. The album also mines some rich treasures from the Shaker tradition, including the comforting "Not One Sparrow Is Forgotten" and the poignant tenderness of "Lay Me Low', with the simple text of

Lay me low where the Lord can find me, where the Lord can own me, where the Lord can bless me

Not everything leans towards the serious or sacred though. A fun, light-hearted arrangement of "She'll Be Comin' Round The Mountain" (arr. by Emma Lou Diemer) features bouncing bass lines and lots of syncopation and sibilance to keep things interesting. And the traditional Dixie folk song "Cindy" tells the story of a heartsick man with tongue-in-cheek lyrics that playfully bounce from part to part.

The liner notes are exceptional, with lots of helpful historic and musical notes on the various selections. This is one of the final albums from The Dale Warland Singers after 31 years. The group disbanded in May 2004 so that the founder Dale Warland could focus more on teaching, consulting and guest conducting. He certainly has left his mark on the choral landscape and this recording is no exception. Highly recommended if you appreciate choral music, especially traditional folk and sacred selections.

Chant to Travel.......2007-03-09

I first heard this CD when my friend Wendy brought it during a visit to Oregon. We chanted the whole way to the Bonneville Spa and Hotsprings. I liked it so much I borrowed it for a week and finally got my own. Ragani has the most lovely voice and the instrumentals are fulland luscious.

What immediately strikes me about this recording is Ragani's sincere devotion to her guru and to the divine. This is evidenced in the opening mantra, the Akhanda Prayer, a beautiful prayer to the Guru. Though I am not a musician, each chant on this CD seems to me to be well recorded and more importantly these chants are infused with Ragani's sincerity as a bhakta. I feel as though I am listening to a seasoned yogini when I listen to this fine collection of chants.
Especially appealing to me about these chants is the shift from a slow repetition of the Name to an accelerated and ecstatic repetition. The gradual acceleration has the effect of locking my mind's attention onto the mantra so that by the time the chant ends, my mind is subdued and I experience the peace brought about by the chant. In other words, when the chant is moving very quickly, there is less room for thoughts (other than the Name) to creep in. By the time the chant speeds up the Name takes hold and my mind begins to settle down. My particular favorites are Sita Ram and Shiva Hara. Whereas Sita Ram is intense, by contrast Shiva Hara is light and uplifting. In addition, the chants on this CD are all in call in response style which makes participation in the chants very easy.

I thought no other kirtan style music could even compare to Krishna Das (whom I love dearly), but Ragani's voice is so beautiful. This CD is enchanting so much so that I cannot seem to tire of listening.

Exquisitely Beautiful.......2004-11-28

This is one of the best New Age/Kirtan CDs of recent years. The final track, "Rama Rama" is one of the most achingly beautiful songs I've ever heard. It's as if you're listening to Sita, the legendary heroine of the epic Ramayana, actually calling for her husband Rama, who's half a world away. Ragani is one of the most inspired artists in the new genre of Western kirtan music. I play this CD often.

Heart - Acoustic And At Their Best.......2007-05-06

This is one cool little album and if you are a Heart fan I would consider this a must buy. The band decided to perform 5 "unplugged" shows at a small club in their hometown of Seattle in 1994 and recorded the results. Many bands have done unplugged albums over the years to various degrees of success. In this case the unplugged format really plays to Heart's strengths and they pull it off with aplomb. The Heart band on this disc contain three original members The Wilson sisters and Howard Leese. Along for the ride on piano, bass and violin is former Led Zeppelin member John Paul Jones. There is also a drummer, bass player, background vocalist and a string section. The material selected for the album is well chosen for the most part. Stripped down versions of the hits are here, "Dreamboat Annie", "Dog And Butterfly", "Alone", "These Dreams", the unfortunately horrendous "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" (although this acoustic version is better than the original), "Crazy On You" (which works really well in this format), "Straight On" and "Barracuda". The more obscure album cuts are the real highlight here though with "Back To Avalon", and "Dream Of The Archer" coming across particularly well. The band also include several interesting covers including Nazareth's "Love Hurts", Elton John's "Seasons", and Joni Mitchell's "River". All are done very nicely and again fit well with Heart's overall sound. One new song "Cherry Blossom Road" is also included. Heart has put out several live albums over the years, but I think that this is the best one. If you like Heart at all this is well worth checking out.

Ann and Nancy Go Acoustic.......2006-10-10

"The Road Home" is one of Heart's best albums (and that's saying something). Recorded live in a small Seattle club, this CD leaves behind the big production and shiny sheen that dominated their music for most of the 1980's. What's here is really what makes Ann and Nancy Wilson so powerful - - acoustic arrangements and Ann's amazing voice. John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin did the arranging and producing - a great homage since the Wilson's have been very vocal about their love of Led Zep over the years. All the Heart originals here are just great and it's eye-opening to hear them played stripped down. Like another reviewer, I never liked "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" (really guys, what were you thinking when you originally recorded this for the Brigade album??) and was surprised to see that it was included here. This version is much better than the original, but the song is just lame (dumb lyrics). Of the covers, the best is Joni Mitchell's "River". I love Joni's version, but Ann makes this her own. Any Heart fan should own this album - and any fan of acoustic/folk rock should too.

Heart at Their Best.......2006-08-30

The Road Home is not only my favorite Heart album, it's one of my favorite albums, period. I feel like it's the album where they put it all together and created something new and magical. Annie's voice (best female rock vocalist of all time) is as potent as ever and Nancy's guitar playing is matured and aged like a fine wine.

Normally I don't care for covers too much, but the few included on this album are done well, especially Joni Mitchell's "River", which is a favorite of mine, and "Love Hurts".

I was starting to list the standout cuts of their own material, but then realized that was silly, because they all are standouts. Each is a gem. I can't say enough about the instrumental and vocal arrangements for these versions. They retain what was good about the originals, but then transcend.

My favorite cut on the album is Crazy on You. It wasn't a song I paid much attention to originally. Then I saw them perform it live in concert and it blew me away as they powered through it and it became one of my favorites. The version on The Road Home is drastically different from the studio version and their previous live versions. And it's all the better for it. It blew me away yet again, this time with a strong blues component mixed in with the rock. It's worth buying the album just for this rendition alone.

The only weak spot on the album? "All I Wanna Do is Make Love to You." It's a stupid song, I've always hated it, and why they ever thought it was a good idea to revisit it I have no idea. I conveniently skip over it every time. Thank goodness for the digital age.

Hard core fans probably already have this album in their collections. Anyone else who is even mildly interested in Heart needs to get this one next as it highlights everything that is great about them.

My favorite album .......2006-06-21

I just ordered my second copy of this CD because my first one has absolutely been through the wringer and couldn't be saved. I wouldn't dare go for weeks or months without listening to this album. I am usually into heavier rock, but this album has truly captured me. It just floats me away to a magical, beautiful, and peaceful place and the versions of the songs have left me STARVED for more Heart music like this. I believe that the Wilson sister's talent is best portrayed in these versions of their masterpieces and in other songs that were never well known by the general public. I have been a Heart admirer since chiildhood, and always listened to Little Queen, Magazine...but this album is over the top incredible and I highly recommend it. It is definitely my favorite Heart album and is also the most listened to of all my albums, of which there are many.

HEART'S BEST.......2006-03-11

Live versions of all hits are far better than studio. "River"
and "Love Hurts" are the best of any other artists renditions
of these two songs.

I agree with the previous review, 100%.

I'm a huge New Riders fan...as well as Commander Cody & his LPA. Both are great. But, New Riders of the Purple Sage...are my FAVORITE country rock band. Always will be!

Other great/favorite Country Rock bands are:

Poco, Pure Prarie League, Byrds, et al.

Anyway, "Home, Home on the Road," is EXCELLENT. I highly recommend it! I've been waiting for this album, to become available on CD...for many years. I bought it, as soon as it became available. Brujo, is also a great album.

Buy it...you'll be glad you did!

Best Live New Riders...........2004-11-07

In the early 70's, two of the best live LP's were Commander Cody's "Live From Deep In the Heart of Texas" and the New Riders' "Home, Home On the Road." While the Cody LP has been on CD for years, it is only recently that the New Riders LP was converted to CD. A few years ago while waiting for him to perform, I had a conversation with Buddy Cage, steel player for the New Riders, and I asked him why "Home, Home On the Road" had never been converted to CD. He said he was surpirsed himself, especially since the LP's producer Jerry Garcia had spent countless hours going through nine months of live tapes from a New Riders tour. He told me Jerry had picked the absolute best recordings from that tour.

So if you like the New Riders, get this CD. Don't waste your money on the other live New Riders CD's. This one is by far the best. The Brujo section is from a studio album that is fair, but the live section is more than worth the price of the collection. It's in the same category as Commander Cody's live recordings. You'll see why these two bands had some of the best live shows going in the 70's.

A Song Of Home.......2005-07-09

You can feel his pride in his heritage in the way he plays on this CD

A little too slick and a little too much Galway.......2004-01-16

Based on the reviews I read about this album, I had high expectations. I am sorry to say that the album leaves me a little cold. The performances are superb, but unspontaneous. Another difficulty is with the orchestrations. In most cases on this album I think the flute just doesn't work. A case in point is Lover's Waltz, which is near perfect in the original Ungar/Mason version. Galway's flute just doesn't exude the same warmth. Another disappointment is Heart of the Heartland, which could have been an interesting conversation between Galway's flute and Ostroushko's mandolin. Instead we get another showcase for Galway with Ostroushko relegated to backup musician--what a shame! The only track I think that works well on this album is The West Texas Waltz, where we get a taste of how a really collaborative album might have sounded. I guess this album makes good easy listening, but it is certainly not the engaging album I would have expected of these folks.

After a year or two of owning this album, I have to say that the performances are even more stale that when I first reviewed it. I wish they'd let me take a star back.

Good for folks who like "easy listening". I like musicians who aren't afraid to challenge each other and themselves. This album had that potential, but falls flat.........

Very Compelling Classy Classical Appalachian.......2003-02-08

I get home from a hard day at the office and put on my headphones and am transported to heaven. If I had only two hours left of life on earth, I would want to listen to this album for one of them and we won't discuss the other hour please! Galway, Ungar, and Mason are superb. My wife and I were already of fan of Galway. Garrison Keillor's recommendation of "Waltzing with You" by Ungar and Mason (Sony) turned me on to Jay and Molly. Then on to "The Lover's Waltz" and "Harvest Home". The subtle blending and play between Galway's Flute, Jay's Fiddle, and Molly's Guitar . . . . God, there is nothing like it. If you buy this CD and don't like, I'll buy it off you and give it to a friend! ... Thanks Sir James, Jay and Molly.

Is it the music or the musicians?.......2002-12-07

During the many times I have listened to this album, I have posed myself the same question: is it the music I like best or the musicians that perform it? The music is compellingly rich for sure, music that makes the home a resonant place to live in the same way that a dancing wood fire speaks to the eyes of the soul. But the music sings with a penetrating warmth because of the seasoned artistry of the musicians who perform it. I have to give the tilt to the musicians who will forever haunt me with the flickering flames of their performance.

A National Treasure.......2002-10-20

This meeting of musical minds was a stroke of creative matchmaking by RCA. James Galway, the renowned flutist blends but does not blur with two of American folk music's more deeply rooted musical thinkers -- Jay Ungar & Molly Mason. Right from the start, "My Cape Breton Home," the art and craftsmanship, the painstaking selection and arrangement is evident. And this CD continues to delight the mind with an hour of the most beautiful music. All tunes, whether old favorites, like Stephen Foster's "Gentle Annie," or new and original, like "West Texas Waltz" by Jay Ungar, come together as naturally as the confluence of many streams. It seems as if you know these songs so well, which in my case is surprising, but perhaps not so surprising from a CD with Jay Ungar on it, composer of the evocative song for all time, "Ashokan Farewell." This piece has become a de facto theme for millions of people who heard it played again and again in the Ken Burns documentary on The Civil War.

The instrumentation, as you might expect, is the main feature of the CD. Flute, fiddle, piano, mandolin, guitar. But at what seems to be exactly the right time, Molly Mason and Ruth Ungar (Jay's daughter) voices sing out in harmony. And there is a deep understanding of the music here too, and therefore, much beauty in the sound. The rendering of "Pretty Saro" could stand alone as a classic, but when you hear it in order and against the background meticulously prepared by these musicians, it has a presence that is truly haunting.

I think anyone with a taste for the roots of American folk music will enjoy this CD. It has deepened my appreciation of the folk music of America and even the rural environment where I live in America. The art and craft are impeccable. "A Song of Home" is from beginning to end, thoroughly enjoyable, much to think about, a heritage to keep.

Produced by directors Ronald Staheli and Rosalind Hall, The Road Home features the Concert Choir, University Singers, Men's Chorus and Women's Chorus, and in some cases all the choirs combined into a majestic grand chorus.

This CD presents a beautiful balance of women's voices, men's voices, and combined voices in various choirs supported by orchestra and other accompaniment. This road home is well worth taking.

Homeward Bound.......2005-08-06

I purchased "The Road Home" because of the 1st titled song, "Homeward Bound" by the BYU choir. It is the accompagniment to an internet collage of U.S. soldiers in
Iraq and it fits beautifully. The entire collection of songs on "The Road Home" is very soothing as well as inspiring. It
reminds me of the beauty and power of human voices singing in harmony. I recommend it to anyone with a love of rich and powerful music.

Inspiring Music-The Road Home.......2005-03-18

This contains a wonderful and inspiring group of selections and is very well done. The title number accompanies an extremely good picture montage by GCS Distributing.Com which contains pictures of the military in Iraq and is a great emotion grabber. This album is well worth buying and listening to over and over.
