5 out of 5 stars I love how this brings back memories.......2007-06-08

I love this CD! I'd been searching for a compilation of traditional hymns to "bring back the good old days" of growing up (in the 1960s and 1970s)listening to our choir and singing along in the Episcopal church. While the selections can be schmaltzy and some are too short, overall the feeling and beauty of so many tried and true hymns rings true. I listen to this over and over in the car and feel so positive and uplifted when I reach my destination!

5 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorites.......2007-03-10

I must admit, up front, a personal bias. I was privileged to be a member of the Amen Choir when we recorded volume 2, and I was delighted to see it had been re-released on CD. I have been a fan of Lee Holdridge for a long time, (he did a lot of the arrangements for John Denver) and his arrangements of these classic hymns is outstanding.

3 out of 5 stars Grandiose.......2006-03-19

This is a nice collection of hymns, but done in a theatrical style, connecting groups of hymns without singing all of the verses (or at least the most familiar) verses. If you like splashy, stirring, hollywood renditions of hymns, you'll like this. If you don't like that sort of thing, you won't like it. I am planning to give my set to a family member who will appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Legacy.......2006-01-08

These albums have been a mainstay of choral hymnal recordings and a standard for inspirational compilations for decades, much celebrated in the then-emerging Christian music community when it was originally released, even given it's classical style. I was thrilled to discover that these were actually still in print; a testament to the timelessness of these performances.

The shortness of each song isn't a problem for me, it would frankly feel more dry and detract from the amazing varied performances of so many classical hymns to run through all four to six verses of most hymns. As it is, each album almost sounds like a continual fanfare, doubtlessly rendering the concept of the title exactly as intended. This is "Hymns Triumhpant", not "Hymns Repetitious".
There is of course a more practical reason; each album (Hymns Triumphant and Hymns Triumphant II) was originally recorded and released as a two-disc vinyl set -- there simply was not enough recording space for the full versions of each song without leaving out a good 2/3rds or more of the songs themselves.

Even now, anyone would be hard pressed to produce a work improving on the London Philharmonic performance of these hymns.
It's well worth the price just to have a part of this legacy as a part of your soundtrack to life.

1 out of 5 stars A Waste of $11.......2005-10-25

Don't be fooled by the samples. They've taken some of the greatest hymns ever composed, sung them beautifully but abridged them almost beyond recognition. It may benefit an organ-student or a recent convert who'd like a varied `sampler' of traditional church music. But to the mature hymn-loving believer it's a disaster of a CD. They've managed to outdo the Football Association by making "Abide with Me" even shorter than the F.A. Cup version. The medleys sound a little contrived for me, but may suit some tastes. Heaven knows why they decided to record the 1st and 3rd verses of a personal favourite of mine "Once to Every Man and Nation". This hymn is what I would term `climactic' in that the final two lines are a sort of theological `punch-line' for the entire hymn. The reckless omission of verses 2 and 4 would have James Russell Lowell turning in his grave!!!

The quality of the singing is the only redeeming feature of this CD. Indeed the appalling abridgements are all the more painful for the excellent voices. They ought to have recorded full-length hymns on 4 CDs and doubled the price. I'd have happily paid $22 for that. But this product, in its current state, would be poor value for money at 11 cents - never mind 11 dollars!!!

5 out of 5 stars perfect...........2007-05-14

when i bought this album, i was blown away. i had set aside two hours so i could listen to it two times straight through. every song is really awesome on it. and the production is amazing(its better than the next albums production. for some reason, the production quality is worse on that album). you can hear the instruments and the work together instead of run together. a perfect album. i recommend it for any fan of symphonic black metal.

5 out of 5 stars Dimmu Borgir's Best Album .......2007-04-25

Considered to be one of Dimmu Borgir's best albums to date (if not THE best), as well as one of black metal's most memorable and popular releases ever, Enthrone Darkness Triumphant (EDT) has found semi-regular play in my stereo since I first purchased the album years ago in 1998. From the moment you hit the play button EDT is an utterly enjoyable listen from the haunting yet epic synth intro to 'Mourning Palace', to the blast beats and crushing brutality of 'Master of Disharmony', and finally to the mellow and supremely melodic 'A Succubus in Rapture'. This album is an impressive listen from beginning to end and is second to no other Dimmu Borgir release to date, unless of course you want to consider their second full-length release and masterpiece, Stormblåst (not the 2005 re-release which is interesting, but not as good as the original recording). I'd be hard pressed to pick my favorite of the two.

On this album Dimmu Borgir deliver a yummy black metal cookie drenched in synthesizer icing goodness. I guess if I had to be nitpicky and find something to complain about it's that the keyboards on this recording tend to slightly drown out the instruments. On the other hand the keyboards on this album are, for lack of a better word, AMAZING. Therefore, I can't really complain about the keyboards being so prominent. Take a listen to 'In Death's Embrace' and you'll know what I mean. A lot of bands today throw around the word "epic" but you don't know epic until you've heard 'In Death's Embrace' - not to mention the keyboard in the chorus of 'Mourning Palace'. You also get a lot of eerie, mysterious, sorrowful, and downright haunting keyboard interludes throughout the album. The production on EDT is top notch and crystal clear. All the instruments stand out aside from the bass guitar which tends to get drowned out, but not all the time. It could be that my sterero sucks.

Shragrath's vocals are really nothing all that spectacular and quite frankly he's never really stood apart from the crowd in my opinion. He's not bad, his style just doesn't stand out to me, like say Abbath from Immortal or Dani from Cradle of Filth. *ahem*. Now don't get me wrong here - I'm not saying Dani Filth's voice is better, I'm just saying it's interestingly (and annoyingly to some) different. But it's the music of Dimmu Borgir that makes them what they are. As for the drumming, guitars, and bass all I can say is all the elements of this band mesh well together and I'll leave it at that. Just stop reading and go buy this damn album if you haven't already. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Black Metal?.......2007-02-26

Enthroned Darkness Triumphant is Dimmu Borgir showing off their Wagnerian bombastic version of symphonic extreme metal in top form. The band sounds their most ferocious and inspired on this album, and songs like "Spellbound (By The Devil)" show their heavy-metal songwriting sensibilities. This band is blasted as being "not black metal" because they incorporate more traditional verse/chorus/verse elements, but this is where Dimmu Borgir truly shine, as with fellow Scandinavian terrors Immortal (and to a far, far, far lesser extent, Cradle Of Filth), that is to say, they excel at throwing a fresh coat of ice-cold blood and corpsepaint on rock & roll, rather than (re)creating the grim sonicscapes of real black metal bands.

3 out of 5 stars Pop Black Metal.......2007-02-11

This is black metal for people who don't listen to black metal. In comparison to real black metal, this is like listening to RHCP or Green Day. Holds more depth than most music of today, but not nearly as much as other death metal. It's dangerously close to Cradle of Filth (crap).

4 out of 5 stars Perfect example of symphonic black metal but..........2007-01-24

Unless you are full of teenage angst chances are the whole "look at how satanic we are" schtick will get pretty tiresome. If you can see beyond that, this is an excellent album which has a wider appeal then the less melodic brands of black metal, such as Mayhem. Not to say that style of black metal is bad, its just different.

But yeah, the vocals will make most people roll thier eyes. Personally, For All Tid and Stormblast are my two favorite Dimmu albums because the vocals are all extremely lo-fi and in norweigen.

Ray Barbee is defnitely one of the most talented men in today's society. This album is a mixture of moody feel good songs and Hawaiin beats. 'A Word Aptly Spoken', I feel, is the song that makes this album come together. I first heard Barbee's music on a 411 skate video and loved it. If you or anyone you know doesn't have this album, get out and get it fast! It is the best!

This music is happy but not sappy. It's relaxing without being musak. Kind of jazz kind of blues. A must have while watching the sun go down at the beach.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional!.......2006-02-24

Was always a big fan of Grant Lee Buffalo, "Jubilee" totally rules, and Grant Lee on his own rocks too!

"Like A Lover" is one of the simplest songs, but conveys so much feeling, it knocks me out everytime I hear it.

"Mobilize" the beat always makes me think of Portishead, such a cool song

"Spring Released" is one of those songs that's timeless. It's like religion to play this track coming into the sunny season.

Do yourself a favour and buy anything of this exceptional musician that you can get your hands on. C'mon Grant Lee, give us another!!

4 out of 5 stars rhythm + romanticism + melody = Mobilize.......2005-07-14

"Epic masterpiece..." "Channeling John Lennon" These are descriptions from other reviews, both puzzling to me. There's nothing epic about this, nor is there the slightest resemblance to Mr. Lennon -- who composed music in an entirely different vein. This is a personal album, sometimes quiet and sometimes hypnotically beat-driven. As far as I can tell GLP played and sang everything himself. This is like his earlier Ladies Love Oracle, but juiced up with rhythm. Acoustic guitars and electric keyboards predominate, with the sythetic percussion.

Mobilize doesn't really hang together as a unified piece. It is more a collection of songs, most of which are very good. The best of them are dreamy, entrancing, and soothing. Computer-sequenced beats give a pulse to many of the tracks. The lyrics are specific enough to be enticing but vague enough to allow your own interpretation. But take advantage of the free amazon.com download of See America and you will hear for yourself the strengths of this Grant-Lee Phillips effort. It will tell you ten times more than I could ever say in a review. Besides, there are only two kinds of music: good and bad. And you and I will never completely agree on which is which. At least give this a try. Was See America Grant-Lee's twist on Simon & Garfunkel's "...all come to look for America"? It seems so to me, and I think it is equally clever and anthemic.

See America, Sleepless Lake, and April Chimes showcase Phillips' ability to write a haunting melody, which is something of a lost art. See his Ladies Love Oracle CD for more of the same.

The other free download, the title track, is probably the least enjoyable tune on the album. It sounds a bit off-kilter, with its minor chords and allusions to war. The other tracks are much less depressing. Spring Released is positively bouyant, as is Beautiful Dreamers. (My grandmother used to play the classic old song Beautiful Dreamer, which GLP deftly incorporates into his own new composition.)

GLP is not trying to push the envelope or pump you up or sermonize. He seeks to entertain, by presenting a little piece of his contempative romantic soul. Treat yourself to some high class pop. Get this album. You can catch glimpses of GLP as the "town troubadour" on the first season of Gilmore Girls, too. That's how I was first introduced to his music.

I lost my first copy of this CD. I can't imagine how. It never left the house. But I had to buy another, because I knew I would miss it. I think you might feel that way about it, too.

5 out of 5 stars Only 500 times over..........2002-11-08

I first heard Grant-Lee when he was part of Grant-Lee Buffalo. A friend made me a tape of "Mighty Joe Moon" about six years ago. I hadn't really thought about Grant-Lee until I saw the Exile Follies tour with Kristen Hersh, Grant-Lee and John Doe. I was so impressed with Grant-Lee that I had to hear more. I downloaded parts of songs from this album and listened to them over and over. I had to buy the album. So I bought it a week ago and have been listening to nothing else but this since. It's on most of the day at work and then on in the car for four or five songs at a time. I truly love this cd, it's a good thing that it's not on tape or the tape would be worn out already.

There is something really catchy about the songs that make you want to listen to them over and over. They also get stuck in your head and you just have to listen to them! "Spring Released," "Sadness Soot" and "Beautiful Dreamers" are the main ones that I keep singing over and over in my head. "See America" has a wonderful romantic sound to it that makes you want to take a road trip. I thought the lyrics seemed really cool at first, then I read the lyrics in the liner notes and realized that they are even cooler than they sound, they are quite poetic.

If you've never heard Grant-Lee, I've learned that you're missing out. He's definitely up there with my faves - PJ Harvey, Kristen Hersh, Tori and Liz Phair. I will definitely be adding more Grant-Lee Phillips to my collection as I can afford it.

4 out of 5 stars Move to this........2002-08-26

Grant Lee Phillips is a top-class singer-songwriter who has a wealth of experience as well as two or three truly great records behind him, and somehow you just knew he wasn't going to disappoint with Mobilize. It finds Phillips embracing a more polished, modern sound than past efforts - accentuated by the classy, breatless pop of the opener 'See America' and similarly impressive 'Humankind'. As the title suggests 'Love's A Mystery' is all mystique and intrigue with Phillips sounding eerily like David Byrne, and is exactly the kind of left-field tunesmithery on the human condition at which he excels.
The real gem here though is 'Sadness Soot' - dizzying in it's magnificence and showcasing just how remarkable Phillips' voice really is - a master of phrasing, mood and expression. As with his Grant Lee Buffalo albums, just when you think you're in for more pop thrills, we get something edgy and challenging like the title track to throw you off the scent. The second half of Mobilize is engaging and interesting, if a little less consistent than the first (though that's a common complaint these days). Still, the bonus track 'Sunday Best' is a rather jaunty closing treat.
For listeners that like their music to be innovative, fresh and just a little outside the square then Mobilize will fit the bill nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Even Better By Himself?.......2002-08-06

Having been an enourmous fan of his work in 'Grant lee Buffalo', I was anxious to hear what he could come up with by himself. After hearing 'Ladies Love Oracle', I was expecting something the same, but what I heard really delighted me. I love Ladies Love Oracle and I love Mobilize.

Grant-Lee is simply one of THE GREAT singer-songwriters (of all time in my oppinion), and now he's taken the genre into cool new territories. If you liked Grant Lee Buffalo, you won't have absolutely NO objections with this album, despite it being quite a bit more 'funky' (for want of a better work) with its electric drums etc...

Grant-Lee's strengths have always been his song writing ability and his voice and these things both come through strong with his 'new sound' (which is equally as appealing and beautiful as it is different to the 'Buffalo' sound).

I was fortuneate enough to hear him live (twice) in Brisbane (australia) in May '02 and it was trully amazing. He is such a talented guy.

I'm hanging out for another solo effort, and until then, Mobilize will keep a huge smile on my face

5 out of 5 stars Alfred Newman's Final Epic Bow.......2004-10-12

Varese Sarabande has again done credit to the genre of great film scores with their recent release of the expanded (if not full) Alfred Newman score for George Stevens' production of "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (Newman and Stevens had also worked together on "Gunga Din," one of Newman's best efforts). The film title missed the mark a bit as far as the film is concerned. This is probably not the greatest of the Bible epics, but it is an interesting entry nevertheless. For those of us who live in the area of Lake Powell and southern Utah it is a trip to view this film with its very familiar Red Rock backdrops filling in for Palestine. And the acting was in many cases first rate. Newman's score was also an enormous plus. Perhaps not one of his best, it was certainly a great score. Based largely on a major theme that is clearly reminiscent of his earlier score for "The Robe," this is a major triumph, as is this three disc presentation. Nicely packaged and produced at an unbelievable price, this is a must for film score buffs. Disc one contains the original soundtrack recording (with updated sound)including Handel's chorus from "The Messiah" which Stevens' insisted upon using instead of Newman's own ending. Curiously, Newman's choral "Exit Music" would have been a much better fit for the film and is included here. Discs two and three include the majority of Newman's original score, as he intended it. It is really majestic stuff, although much of the score took a sombre tone. I cannot wait to enjoy this score driving down the Burr Trail. It is music that mataches the grand landscape, and the greatest story ever told.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack, entire film score and composer ~ Alfred Newman.......2004-10-10

Varese Records presents Alfred Newman's score for "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965/196 mins), George Stevens directs an epic that shares the story and life of Jesus Christ ~ featuring Max Von Sydow [Jesus], Dorothy McGuire [Mary], Claude Rains [Herod the Great], Charlton Heston [John the Baptist], Angela Lansbury [Claudia], Donald Pleasence [Satan, the Dark Hermit], David McCallum [Judas Iscariot], Sidney Poitier [Simon of Cyrene], Telly Savalas [Pontius Pilate], Martin Landau [Caiaphas], Robert Blake [Simon the Zealot], Jamie Farr [Thaddaeus], Roddy McDowell [Matthew], Jose Ferrer [Herod Antipas] and John Wayne [Centurion] and many more with memorable performances ~ yet at the time of release, received low praises for the director and cast.

The music, yes the music is where this film shines...Alfred Newman, one of the most respected composers of his time was given the assignment ~ it was Newman who gave us the "20th Century Fox" fanfare theme...also a number of other film scores "Anastasia", "Diary of Anne Frank", "Captain from Castile", "Gunga Din", "How The West Was Won", "How to Marry A Millionaire", "The Keys of the Kingdom", "Man of Galilee", "Mark of Zorro", "Nevada Smith", "The Razor's Edge", "The Robe", "The Song of Bernadette" and "Wuthering Heights" ~ all of them were winners.

The Greatest Story Ever Told is here complete for the very first time and has everything from "Original Soundtrack Album" and then the "Entire Film Score" on the last two discs...making this a three disc "film-score-buffs" dream come true ~ completely remastered, with liner notes that will tell all the inside scoop from author, screenwriters, director and composer...just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-05

This is a really good representation of 20th century hymn tunes sung by a typical British Choir made up of boy sopranos, male altos and the usual number of tenors and basses. The choir sings very well using good diction and appropriate interpretation. The arrangements are varied, different groups of voices singing parts of a hymn usually alternating and eventually the full choir joins in; nothing unusual in the arrangements themselves. There is a nice variety of hymns, some more interesting than others. I will comment on a few of them as follows:
The opening hymn:'Christ, triumphant, ever reigning' is a good opener in that it is quick and begins with the boy sopranos and immediately gets your attention. John Barnard's majestic 'Guiting Power' tune sweeps the words up in a wide-ranging,flowing melody that creates from them a fine hymn.
'I, the Lord of sea and sky(Here I am, Lord) is a truly striking hymn! The words of this song begin with a proclamation in the verses; this is answered in the refrain by the singer's commitment to service. This is reflected in the tune. The melody for the verses has a vigorous movement to proclaim the work of God in creation, His continuing love for that creation, and His call for service. Both the words and music are by the American Jesuit musician Daniel L. Schutte, who has served both on college campuses and in parish ministry.
'All My Hope On God Is Founded' the tune of which is written by Herbert Howells and is called 'Michael'in memory of his son who died in childhood. It is a lovely melody and the words suit it very well.
The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was the music editor of the 'English Hymnal'. The most widely used of his own tunes was the 'Monk's Gate' which he created from a folk tune. It is subtly contrived, as the rhythm of the alleluias shows. 'Sine nomine' simply means without a name. The resulting hymn is 'For All the Saints'.

The Wells Cathedral Choir under the direction of Malcolm Archer accompanied by Rupert Gough on the organ have produced an excellent disc.

I bought this collection because I saw the song, Here I Am, Lord written by Daniel Schutte. I grew up singing this song and many other pieces from the St. Louis Jesuits and this continues to be one that has deep meaning for me. In addition, the other pieces in this collection are very enjoyable to listen to, not only for worship but for time of reflection.

After the Anglican Communion, particularly the American branch, has completed its transformation from a church to a political-social club, at least it will be remembered for two things: the beautiful and influential language of its Book of Common Prayer (1662) and its wonderful music. The English Hymn, volume 1, is a promising start to another English music series by Hyperion. This series complements Hyperion's English Anthems series, its Psalms at St. Paul's (many volumes of Anglican chant), and its two-CD collection of "Mags and Nuncs" (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord and My Spirit Hath Rejoiced). Volume 1, "Christ Triumphant," features hymns written in the 20th century. The styles of the hymns range from confident, pre-Great War, "God is an Englishman" roof-raisers to insipid, happy-clappy jingles, which inadvertently, I assume, parallel the decline of the church. The Wells Cathedral Choir sings with gusto and, typical of Hyperion, the sound quality is excellent. My only disappointment came when the CD ended - is this all there is to the 20th century? I hope Hyperion plans to include more than one volume on the 20th century in this series. If you enjoy this type of music, you will be satisfied with this CD. If you have CDs from the other series listed above, the English Hymn, vol. 1, and a programmable, carousel-CD player, now you can click your heels and transport yourself to Evensong at King's College, Cambridge, or St. Paul's, London!

3 out of 5 stars Whitecross's best...but is it good enough?.......2007-03-31

1989's The Triumphant Return was the third album in as many years from Christian rockers Whitecross. Whitecross always struck me as the band you'd listen to when your parents wouldn't let you buy a Ratt cassette (that was the case in my house growing up). Still, the band was in pretty good form on this album. The musicianship and songwriting were tight, as were Scott Wenzel's Pearcy-esque vocals, and perhaps most notably the production values were greatly improved from previous efforts. Even the House of Lords style cover art was better. My only real compliant is that with their Sunday sermon lyrics, the band continues to wield their faith like a blunt instrument.

One of the best things about bands like Stryper and Barren Cross is that you didn't have to be a Christian to enjoy their music. You just had to enjoy hard rock and metal. Like Christian rock pioneers Petra, Whitecross was always in full evangelical mode with their music, and while that's certainly their prerogative, it seems that could turn off the type of casual listeners that the band was presumably trying to reach in the first place. At that point, the band is left preaching to the faithful. There's definitely a sense that if you're not already on board with the band's message, you aren't going to be welcome.

In the end, your enjoyment of Whitecross in general, and the Triumphant Return in particular, is going to come down to one factor - whether your musical tastes are driven more by the music or the message. Whitecross was certainly a competent rock band, but I have a hunch that most people bought their albums because they were a Christian band than because they were a good rock band. For my part, I know that when I reach for a Barren Cross CD it's because I want to hear some solid American power metal, and when I listen to Believer it's to hear some truly innovative death metal. Their religious convictions are merely an interesting aside to their music. Aside from an unwavering commitment to their faith (which I can certainly admire even if I'm not a believer myself), what does Whitecross really offer that you couldn't hear from dozens of other 80's hard rock bands?

4 out of 5 stars Some Of Best of Whitecross On This CD..........2006-04-17

Scott Wenzel and Rex Carroll collaborate to start the beginning of the best CDs by Whitecross. The usual Rex Carroll riffs that Whitecross fans have come to enjoy, and the familiar metal voice of Scott Wenzel, makes this CD the beginning of the upper echelon CDs by Whitecross, imho!
The best songs are Attention Please(fast paced metal)... Down(Great song, was made a music video)... Behold(One of many great WC ballads)... Shakedown... Heaven's Calling Tonight(My favorite song on the CD)
I place this CD as Whitecross' 4th best CD, behind (1)In The Kingdom, (2)Unveiled, and (3)High Gear.

5 out of 5 stars THEY HAVE MY ATTENTION!!! (Just an honest review from a huge Whitecross fan...).......2006-04-11

Their 1987 self titled debut "Whitecross", though lacking good production, started their career together in fantastic fashion. Although the production was better and I loved it at the time, 1989's "Hammer & Nail" was a slight downgrade in their song writing. 1992's "Triumphant Return" combines the best of the prior two releases. It matches their debut's excellent song writing and surpasses "Hammer & Nail" with outstanding production.

Whitecross accomplishes the demand implied in the title of first song, "Attention Please". From the moment the opening chords to the main riff blares through the speakers, they caught my attention. What a way to kick start a CD. Two aspects that were immediately noticeable were the drumming and bass playing as compared to the first 2 releases. In a word, outstanding! Both finally matched the wizardry of Rex Carroll's guitar playing. "Red Light" and Straight Thru The Heart" continue what was started on the first track. These two are excellent songs with memorable hooks. The next track takes a slight detour in style. While the first 3 tracks are fast paced, "Down" is slower but no worse a song. It also marks the first time that Rex varies the guitar sound within the song. Next is "Behold" and if you're a fan of Whitecross' ballads, you may consider this track to be among their best. The song radiates with a sincerity that all too commonly is missing from the ballads of other metal bands. "Shakedown" appeared on a Christian guitar oriented compilation in 1989 but this CD's version crushes the original. The call and response style riff is given greater impact with a slight difference in chord placement which makes it absolutely fantastic. I especially enjoy the first half of Flashpoint" which is this CD's guitar solo. The second half takes a completely different direction in style. It's interesting and quite effective. "Simple Man" is great. Rex takes the lead vocal chores on this song and it's a nice change of pace. The style isn't really a ballad. It's more of an acoustic driven song styled similarly to songs you might've heard on AM radio during the 1970's. "Over The Top" jockeys for position with "Shakedown" as the best song on this CD. The main guitar riff makes great use of "hot space" (a term coined by the rock group Queen who also named an album "Hot Space"). Defined, it simply means playing a riff that makes use of places in measures where no notes are played. When done in a certain fashion, it makes the notes/chords played around those "hot spaces" have much more impact. Fantastic song. "Heaven's Calling Tonight" closes this CD nicely.

Whitecross were often compared to the metal group Ratt and that's mainly because of Scott Wenzel's vocals. However, if you're familiar with Ratt, you'll notice that on this release less of a comparison can be made between the two bands. The song writing style bares little resemblance to their secular counterparts, not to mention that Ratt's guitar players couldn't dream of playing in Rex's style.

A combination of excellent playing by Rick Cua and Frank Liva and the great production give the bass and drums much greater impact than they've had on the previous 2 releases. Scott Wenzel's vocal shrieks are even more prominent on this CD and it goes without saying that Rex's guitar playing is outstanding. Half of the riffs are very good while the other half are just flat-out great. All of the songs have an incredible guitar solo. All of these elements combine to make Whitecross' "Triumphant Return" their best.

4 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST FROM WHITECROSS!!.......2005-12-11

This album by Whitecross is pretty much the same formula as the first two albums. Starts heavy with "Attention Please" and continues with rock/hard rock until track 5 with the ballad "Behold"(one of their best ballads) and the next side is very similar. Nothing wrong with that and this one also features some of my favorite Whitecross songs. This album is also produced very good(maybe their best production) with guitars, drums and vocals all sounding great and equal without drowning each other out. There also seems to be more energy on this one than previous releases.

This is one of the best Whitecross albums you can buy. Way underrated and deserves a listen. Sounds like a mix of Ratt/Whitesnake(listen to "Down" during the middle bridge...very similar to "Still Of The Night" from Whitesnake). This is essential Whitecross and should be added to your collection if you are a fan of their music or just want to check them out.

Product Description

In 1987 Whitecross took the Christian Metal Scene by storm, delivering what would soon become one of the most talked about and highly collectible recordings in the Christian metal market. Scott Wenzel and Rex Carroll created a duo like few before them, breaking ground in the Christian metal scene that opened up the door for a flurry of bands. Often compared to the secular mainstream band RATT, Scotts vocals were new and fresh in Christian music, and Rexs blazing guitar work put Whitecross on the map for good. Whitecross continued through out the 80s and 90s making music and releasing some 12 recordings with drummer Mike Feighan, as well as many other musicians. Now Rex, Scott and Mike would like to take you back to a time when Metal still reigned. Whitecross Nineteen Eighty Seven is a completely new recording of the original Self-Titled Whitecross, but bigger, louder and better than ever. 1. Who Will You Follow 2. Enough Is Enough 3. 5 out of 5 stars A Great Classic made even better.......2007-01-12

I am a bit skeptical about re-recordings and remixes in general, so I am usually hesitant to buy them, especially when I love the original recording as much as I loved this one way back then. This disc is amazing! It keeps all of the great parts of the original recording, but gives them a much fuller sound and includes "Love on the Line" which was previously only available on the Heavy Righteous Metal compilation. The two best songs on here are Signs of the End, and No Way I'm Going Down. The ballad "You're Mine" has been left out, but it was the weakest song on the original recording anyway. Check out the great Demos and solos on the end of this thing. The only negative on this is that it is obvious that Scott has lost a little on his vocals in the higher range, but in the end it doesn't affect the quality of the songs at all.....A great addition to your collection!!! BUY IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars 4 STARS FOR THE RECORDING, 6 FOR JUST THINKING OF IT (hopefully an honest review from a huge fan...).......2006-03-15

In preparation for the arrival for my copy of Whitecross' "Nineteen Eighty Seven" cd, I dusted off my copy of their 1987 self titled debut cd. The moment the opening chords for "Who Will You Follow" rang out, I found my mind flooded with memories. Whitecross was the first metal group I heard with a strong christian message. A friend of mine let me hear his copy of the four song e.p. "Love On The Line" and it stuck in my head for seemingly years. Being more a fan of music than lyrics, it was quite unusual that Scott Wenzil's voice had almost equal power as Rex Carroll's incredible guitar playing in attracting me to their songs. The opening chords to "Love On The Line" caught my ear and Scott's screaming of the lyrics "caught in the middle, your heart's been burned, your only love has walked away, the page is turned" had me hooked. This same friend and I saw Whitecross live in festivals, churches and community halls about 8 times (maybe more) between 1987 and 1993. Whitecross is the only group that I've traveled literally hundreds of miles to see in concert. Therefore my review may not be without bias.

First off, let me say that somehow, Rex's guitar sound on this new cd is almost exactly the same as the original cd. I'm not sure if it's that the riffs are that distinctive or Rex remembering his settings (maybe some combination of the two). Allowing for a possibly bigger budget and better recording gear, the guitar is louder and meatier but over all it's amazingly similar. A big thank you to Rex for "keeping it real". Thanks to Mike Feighan, something that HAS changed is the quality of the drumming. It's much better than on the original recording. A direct comparison between the 2 disks will allow you to hear that the drumming is smoother, more dynamic and has more imaginative fills on the newer cd. Another change is Scott's vocals. For about the last 10 years, Scott has been singing in a lower register. Compare his vocals on "Signs Of The End" on both disks and you'll hear just how hard it is for him to sing in the higher octaves. However, he's pretty much hitting the notes the same as he did on the original recording, the trademark raspiness is still present and his vocals have a bit more grit. A huge thanks to Scott for even trying to get back up in that vocal stratosphere.

A high percentage of the songs are played practically note for note so if you're familiar with the original recordings, there's no need for a complete song by song review. In spite of this not really being a "band" recording (Rex plays bass on many of the songs), the energy hasn't been lost and that serves this project well. Rex occasionally plays notes in place of a dive-bomb that was on the original disk but my goodness, even for a master guitar player like Rex, it's darn near impossible to play every song exactly as it was originally recorded. The vocals are slightly different in areas such harmonies and the occasional vocal doubling on the original recordings aren't duplicated on the newer cd but it's readily apparent that Scott's intent was to sing them the way they were meant to be sang. So literally, what you're getting is a re-imaging of the original cd minus the ballad "You're Mine", the welcome addition of "Love On The Line", the instrumental "Reanimate" (excellent!) and a few outtakes. The only song that doesn't quite hold up to the original is "Nagasake". The backwards vocals (which actually said "trust in the Lord") at the beginning of the original are missing which is no big deal. The first 2/3 of the solo is great but Rex's guitar playing is uncharacteristically stiff during the classical descending runs (reminiscent of the licks Steve Vai played in the movie Crossroads during the guitar duel). To my ears, the original sounded sort of like Rex just played this incredible classical oriented guitar solo "off the cuff". There's seemingly conflicting emotions of the wide eyed joy exuded by a young boy picking up the guitar for the first time and thinking "wow, I can actually play this stuff?" while simultaneously oozing with the confidence only an artist with years of wood shedding and being other worldly talented can exhibit. That sense of discovery seems to be missing from the newer version. Also, I love "You're Mine". I would have loved for them to have included an updated version of that song as well. But all in all, this new cd is very much appreciated. While the music style may or may not be outdated (I love what they do so much it's hard for me to tell), I get the feeling these guys could be at the forefront of a 1980's metal revival. It doesn't say what year this occurred but in the liner notes, Rex mentioned that he used the song "Reanimate" to enter a Rock contest in New York AND LOST!!!! To who? Eddie Van Halen? Jimi Hendrix? Besides those two, what more could you possibly want in a "rock" guitarist? Being heavier than anything in their catalog, "Reanimate" could be sign that Whitecross is moving into a new heavier direction which certainly would save Scott's voice.

While it's unusual, I don't find to be a huge surprise that they decided to rerecord the entire self titled debut cd because this is something at which they have a bit of a history. In 1988, Whitecross contributed a song on a various artist compilations called "The Axemen". That song was called "Shakedown" which was rerecorded and appears on the "Triumphant Return" cd (their best in my opinion). "No Second Chances" which appears on the cd "In The Kingdom" was rerecorded and included on the Whitecross compilation cd "One More Encore". This is a group that knows they have treasures lying in their catalog.

As a side note, the title track of the 4 song e.p. "Love On The Line" actually did appear on cd however it wasn't a Whitecross cd. They contributed the song to another various artist compilation called "Testify" (send me an email at hdetter at gmail.com and I'll burn a copy for you). Two of the remaining three songs "No Way I'm Going Down" and "Enough Is Enough" appear on the self titled debut however "I Believe" can't be found on cd anywhere. This song was a departure from the trademark Whitecross sound in that it's blues-rock oriented and Rex handled the lead vocal chores (Scott's unmistakable background harmonies are excellent).

Anyway, "enough is enough" on the Whitecross history. Here's hoping that this leads to a cd with new music.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing!.......2006-02-16

Usallu when a band decides to "re-record" an album disaster strikes! Not with this release! It surpasses the original. The original "Pure Metal" release has been out of print for quite some time. I bought it brand new on cassette in 1987. That cassette is long gone. So instead of paying high-dollar for an original CD I decided to wait on this and it was worth the wait!

VERY true to the originals, no updated sound here. Rex's guitars shred almost nore-for note to the originals. Scott's vocals are a bit deeper now. The drums and bass sound much better with today's production technology.

Kicks off with "Who Will You Follow", contains "Eough Is ENough", "No Way I'm Going Down" and more. Only the ballad was left off, which slips my mind at the moment. Contains 2 "new" tracks. "Love On The Line" was never released on CD. "Re:Animate" is a new instrumental/solo from Rex. It is the only thing that sounds remotely "modern" but it still shreds.

You can hear good MP3 samples at the Whitecross website (google it).

Also, lots of cool pics from the 80's and new liner notes from Rex.

If you are a fan of Christian Metal, give this one a try. Old School at its best! also, Saint is still out there too!!

4 out of 5 stars The 80's classic redone.......2006-02-13

In the 80's, hair metal ruled. While bands like Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Poison, and Cinderella were rocking the world, groups like Shout, Barren Cross, Holy Soldier, and Bloodgood kept the church rocking too. There were the "posers" too; bands that had the look but not the sound. Then, in 1987, a band named Whitecross released their first recording. They were definitely not posers, but had the chops to back it all up.

Folks immediately took notice because of their unique sound. Scott Wenzel's vocals brought comparisons to bands like Ratt and AC/DC. Rex Carroll launched into it with scorching guitar riffs and fearless solos. The band went on to win a Dove Award and release 12 recordings in some incarnation or another before disbanding completely.

Now, nineteen years later, the band has reformed. Rather than release a CD of new music, they took the unorthodox route of completely rerecording their debut CD. Bringing back Mike Feighan (easily their strongest drummer and the one who played on more releases than any other in their revolving door backing band), they hit it with a more aggressive sound than before. So how does it hold up?

To me, the strongest Whitecross recordings were their later ones after Rex left and other guitarists came in to give Whitecross the gut-level rock sound it deserved. Scott took things in a new direction and really made the band something to notice even as it was on its way out. If they were going to remake a CD, it kind of seems more natural to choose perhaps some greatest hits and go from there. Still, the wealth of material on the debut album gives them a lot to work with.

One thing to say about Rex Carroll, he's consistent. He sounds exactly the same as he did 20 years ago. As a matter of fact, he sounds the same on every single record he plays on. Rather than try anything too daring, he stays with the same signature sound and solos he's always played. This time though, the rhythm guitar parts that are the backbone of the songs have some crunch to them. He plays riffs in every song like it's the last time he'll ever get to play (unfortunately sometimes cluttering the song with too much noise-especially when Scott's singing). It's probably impossible to see his fingers move in some parts. "Nagasake" is as strong now as it was then.

Scott's vocals are a little more subdued now, but I think that's to be expected. Nobody can keep singing in the stratosphere forever! What he loses in range he makes up for in passion. This is more of the vocal style he used in the later Whitecross recordings like Unveiled and Equilibrium.

The strongest songs on the CD are "Who Will You Follow", "Enough is Enough", and "All I Need". In addition to the songs from the original recording, they include "Love on the Line", which was never released on CD before. This fist-pumping version rocks (think an angry Led Zepplin) and actually sounds better than the original. There's also a new guitar instrumental by Rex called "Reanimate". If you like his instrumentals from other releases, you'll probably like this one. Some catchy hooks, but mostly just the same stuff as always from Rex. It kind of gets repetitive after a while.

All in all, this is a good release and it's nice to see the band get to revisit their debut and clean it up a little. Fans of the hair band years will love this nostalgia trip. It's definitely worth picking up just to hear an updated sound from the band. Hopefully next time they'll choose to take songs from other releases and do this again instead of working their way back through their discography. Or better yet, give us all new material!

Stryper returned last year with a new CD. Whitecross brings us this new release. Holy Soldier's even working on a new set. Just goes to show: hair bands can still rock.

5 out of 5 stars Improving a classic!!!.......2005-12-13

I'll begin by noting that I don't consider myself a Whitecross fan; I do, however, enjoy great Christian hard rock and metal. Like so many other folks, I first discovered Whitecross back in 1987 when their debut release generated quite a buzz in the CCM community. They were the answer to my prayers; I was tired of listening to Christian music that tried unsuccessfully to appeal to fans of hard rock. Aside from the obvious Stryper, Saint, Messiah Prophet, and even Bloodgood, there was little on shelves back in 1987 that really sounded like the music I heard on secular rock radio stations. When I first heard "Who Will You Follow," I thought I was listening to a re-tooled and converted version of Ratt. I was stunned to learn that Whitecross was its own entity, and that they had an entire album full of tunes that could easily fit with many successful secular artists at the time. Over the next few years I found that I liked each successive Whitecross release less than the one before. I'm not sure if their debut was so good that it was impossible to top or if I was growing as a music fan. Though I never became a Whitecross fan, their debut release retained a special place in my heart. So, once I learned that Rex and Scott were planning to re-record their classic, I was both ecstatic and fearful. I was happy that their early music would get another shot at appearing on a CD, but I was worried that they would taint my memory of the original recording. I had fears the band would make the same mistake that Ozzy made when he recently had the bass and drums on his first two classic albums re-recorded. Fortunately, I was to be pleasantly surprised. In my humble opinion, I feel that Whitecross improved their debut. I'm sure that purists would argue the first release is the better of the two versions, but I don't think so. The new version of "Whitecross-1987" has all the chops and riffs of the first recording, but it is also a bit more thunderous. "Enough Is Enough" (despite its silly "enough, nuff" chorus) is solid, and the guitar work comes through much more powerfully than the original. Likewise, "Signs of the Times" offers a take on the original that is true to the 1st version but much more aggressive. Best of all, the inclusion of "Love on the Line"--an often overlooked Whitecross song--rounds out the CD with a classic sound that doesn't compromise its power for a slower tempo. The song is reminiscent of AC/DC's earth-shaking "For Those About to Rock." Even the lone new track, "Re-Animate," fits on the disc rather nicely. Though the track is an instrumental Rex Carroll piece, it sounds as if it could have easily appeared on the original debut release nearly 20 years ago. All said, "Whitecross 1987" is a worthy rendering of the original recording. In fact, I feel comfortable saying that it is better than the original. Listening to the CD makes fans realize how good Whitecross's debut was, but it also reminds us that some things just get better with age...
