didn't work for rehearsals.......2007-03-22
I used this CD to help me rehearse for the BIG production I was in, but it didn't match the libretto at all. I think there was one song on there that I could use.
Big for folks doing the Musical.......2006-03-20
If you're getting this CD to help prepare for your school or community group doing the musical, there are a lot of changes from the CD to the book. Aside from finding the book in a new key and some chunks added/deleted, Here We Go Again and When You're Big aren't included anymore.
Overall, the music's a little trite, but there are some nice moments -- mostly the stuff sung by the female leads.
It's Awesome, It's Amazing, It's BIG!!!!.......2006-01-22
My high school did "Big" my sophomore year, and oh my god, it was such a fun musical to do. I kind of forgot about it until my senior year, when I suddenly craved some of that music again. So I purchased this CD and I've been loving it since. They got rid of a couple of the songs and replaced them with others as the show progressed on Broadway, so I was suprised to hear new material (to me anyways), and for the most part, I actually enjoyed these original songs over their replacements that my production contained. This cast is phenomenal and the guy who plays Josh Baskin sounds so much like Tom Hanks at points, its crazy. It's a simple, yet a bit fantastic musical about growing up, and it's funny and romantic, and a lot of fun. I love all the songs, and it's a shame it didn't do too well on B-way. At least this recording will keep the music alive.
"This Isn't Me" is one of my favorite tracks, as it's a lot of fun and has a great beat, but suprisingly it was replaced with "Good Morning to Mom", which was only so-so. "I Want To Go Home" is a great ballad that Josh sings, and its simple, a bit funny, and the ending is the best, as its cute and sad. Another song they got rid of, "Here We Go Again", is a song Susan sings, and again, I like it alot. It has a quirky melody that I like. "Stars, Stars, Stars" is another great song, and is quite cute. One of the more popular songs. "Cross The Line" is the finale to Act I and is also very excellent and up beat, and makes you want to dance. "Stop, Time" is my favorite song on the album by far. Sung by Josh's mom, it is one of the more poignant moments of the show. Heartfelt, sad, and truly beautiful, it defiantely makes you appreciate your mom. Barbara Walsh sounds superb on this: she has a great voice. I love this one. "Dancing all the Time" is another good Susan song, and it leads into "I Want To Know" by Young Josh, which is another good ballad. "Coffee, Black" is another showstopper, fun ensemble song, and again, very comedic. "One Special Man" is Susan's ballad to Josh, and it is very beatiful. My only regret is that its only 2:21 so its a short one, and I just want her to start belting at the end, but no, its a quiet ending. Still, I love this one too. The finale is great too, and features an amazing duet between Josh and Susan. I love the harmonies they do.
All in all, this is a great album. Sample the songs and give it a try. This is a must have!!
a lost gem.......2004-10-14
i saw this musical at the local high school in 2001 and was plesently suprised i of course saw the movie and the only thing i knew about this musical was it didnt stay long on broadway, so when i saw it was i shocked this is a delight cross the line still resenates in my head 5 years later.
Ungodly awful.......2004-06-19
BEWARE. This musical is perhaps one of the five worst pieces of music I have ever experienced. I began to wonder if the composer was attempting to make the world's worst musical. Listen for yourself and enjoy the disjunct vocal lines, the desperate attempt at "fun music", and - worst of all - how the highlight of the entire show both dramatically and musically is the insipidly awful "Heart and Soul". Stick to the movie because this baby is horrendous.

Remove Head from Rectum.......2007-07-05
How is this a marketing trick? Oh wait, its not, its a comedy cd from the tv series so before you post your ignorant statments,do as the title states. I mean, jesus christ, are we really devolving that fast.
Wait..........2007-07-04
I think the reviewer above meant to say "can it get any funnier?" and the answer is maybe. But it's still pretty hilarious.
Wake Up the Neighbors.......2007-05-22
This is some funny, offensive stuff. If you haven't seen the show yet, check it out on Fuse. These guys have taken sketch comedy to a whole new level. I'm sure the Kids In the Hall would be proud.
very good.......2007-05-03
if you like the show and the songs on the shows, you will like this. overall this cd is a really good, it has all the songs from the show, and some new ones and is definenetly worth a buy,but i think you should buy it on some other site, because 18.99 is a lot of money for a cd you could find for 10$

Classic Gospel.......2006-11-06
If you are a serious fan of gospel music then you need htis classic CD in your collection. The Pace Sisters are truly annointed and you will here the melodies and chords from a lot of today's music on this CD. You might also be reminded that they are a ALL talented singers, not just LaShaun.
Still Good, After All These Years..........2006-06-29
As a former radio announcer, I used to keep this one in the tape deck. The Anointed Pace Sisters were truly anointed. I still enjoy listening to this one, especially "When God Is In the Building." We would get many requests for that song, and everyone who had a church singing group would attempt to sing that one. My favorite was "In Christ." To Duranice, and the rest of the beautiful sisters, we hope you all record again real soon!
ANNOINTED.......2005-08-28
I'VE HAD THIS CD BEFORE AND WHEN I HEARD THE SAMPLE CLIPS OF THE SONGS AGAIN I JUST HAD TO HAVE IT.I LOVE IT,ITS IN MY CD PLAYER RIGHT NOW AS WE SPEAK.

And Lashun keep your head in the skies knowing that God does everything for a reason. We love you in Valdosta Ga. Duranice and Latrice please come back to see us. May God forever keep all of you is my prayer.

I would like to order all their cd's........1999-04-30
The Annoited Pace Sisters are truly annoited. Although I am very young, I love their music. I was with a gospel group back home and we used to sing their songs. We were a young group.(ages 16-21) It was about 4 of us. I love their music and I would like to purchase all of their music, but being that I'm in the Airforce, stationed at Holloman AFB, New Mexico, I can't find any of their music. It's a struggle being young trying to serve the Lord, but when I play my music I'm reminded how easy it can be. To the Annoited Pace Sisters, continue to let the Lord use you. There are still alot of people that admire you and love your music. All of you are blessed and have very pretty voices. Thank you and God Bless.

Customer Reviews:
Okay, but kind of disappointing.......2006-04-17
This isn't a bad recording, but the tracks are not the actual performances off of any cast recording of any of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals. The reditions of the songs on the disc are of varying quality. Some are pretty good. Some are borderline awful.
It is a good collection for inexpensively getting a lot of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most popular songs in one place and having them there to be able to listen to get the idea of what a certain song sounds like and is about. It isn't the collection of definitive recordings for certain roles. In fact in a couple examples, I wonder if the performer fully understood the context of the song he or she was singing &/or what it was about. Overall, the album is good, for the most part, if not excellent.
However, the liner notes for "The Essential Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber" is another matter. I don't mean to be unkind, but the author of the comments on the different tracks (one Rexton S. Bunnett) is blatantly WRONG in multiple instances. I don't mean just in nit-picky details, but in major plot details/context of songs, like the fact that Bunnett identifies "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" as being sung by "our heroine" (who he does not even identify by name as Christine Daae) as she thinks about her lover, not as being sung about Christine's dead father. He also says that the Phantom has found his perfect love and "Angel of Music" in Christine... because HE is the Angel of Music who Christine believes has been sent to her by her dead father, and because although the Phantom is obsessed with Christine, that relationship is far from "loving" (even if Christine shows him compassion. I feel like these (and a couple other mistakes) are major plot points to get wrong. A good amount of the commentary reads as if Bunnett might have written it at the last minute, fudging his way through entries on musicals of which he had little knowledge; like what an essay I might write on a book I never read for my college class but had quickly looked up on Cliff's Notes would sound like. In terms of sheer editing, there are spelling mistakes, run-on sentences and spacing errors ("Any DreamWill Do")in the liner notes. Where was the copy editor?
And the most frightening fact of all, under Bunnett's credentials, it says "Harper Collins has just published his revision and updating of the Collins Book of the Musical."
I am being very critical, but I think that for a widely-released CD it is reasonable to expect the liner notes to be at a professional level, as they were most likely supposed to be.
Not quite what I expected..........2005-04-23
I was looking for a CD of the original performances and this CD doesn't have them. I suppose it was my fault for not looking closer, but the songs just weren't the same. Personally, I was not impressed. If you don't care that they aren't the originals then it is nice to listen to.
Some great performances, some not so great..........2005-04-18
This CD is actually pretty good, considering you get 40 songs for less than $16. Let's evaluate the pros and cons.
Pros:
Two classic songs that are performed excellently are Phantom of the Opera and I Don't Know How to Love Him.
Of course you want to compare Phantom to the classic Michael Crawford/ Sarah Brightman version. Well, guess what? This version is BETTER. The woman has a deeper voice than Brightman, and her singing style is just awesome. The ending of this version (you know, the "Sing, my angel of music, sing for me!") is different, but in a good way... I think.)
And of course, the standard for I Don't Know How to Love Him is Yvonne's version. This version is different, but it grew on me quickly. This version has a country feel to it, almost. Somehow it works and sounds great.
There are a lot of great performances in this collection. My favorites include: Heaven on Their Minds, Everything's Alright, Could We Start Again Please, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Buenos Aires, Rainbow High, Only You, Starlight Express, Angel of Music, Masquerade, All I Ask of You, Half a Moment, and Whistle Down the Wind. I think they're all great versions of their more famous counterparts.
Cons:
First of all, there are some technical problems that are kind of disappointing. A few of the songs have a very echoey sound. Any Dream Will Do, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, and There's Me are the songs that come to mind that are the worst in this regard. It isn't really bad, just enough to be slightly annoying, more so when the volume is turned way up on your CD player.
A few songs are worthy of skipping over when listening to this collection. In my opinion, Superstar, Sunset Boulevard, and Gethesmane are the biggest disappointments.
Superstar just doesn't cut it for me. The singer really overdoes it, making it overstylized... really makes you yearn for Murray Head. I can't stand listening to it. Just my opinion.
Sunset Boulevard is one of my very favorite musicals, so I was really hoping that the singer would do justice to its title song. Unfortunately I don't think he did. You can't help but compare it to Alan Campbell's fantastic version. This guy has a very choppy way of singing, when I'm used to it being sung so smoothly. Maybe it would grow on me, but I don't think I'll give it a chance to. However, that last note is much stronger than Alan Campbell's. It doesn't make up for the rest of the song, though.
Finally, Gethsemane. The inevitable fact is that NO ONE can sing this song like Michael Ball. This guy tries, he really does. But he doesn't have the right voice or the right style. So please listen to Michael Ball's performance of Gethsemane if you want to know how breathtaking of a song it can be. It's on the Royal Albert Hall DVD, and I'm sure he's got it on one of his CDs.
Anyway, overall, this is a good CD if you like quantity over quality. Don't buy it for the classics, you'll probably end up disappointed with many of them. Buy it for the lesser known songs. You probably won't like every song, especially if you're a big ALW fan, but for the price, it's worth it.
If you want classic versions of classic ALW songs, you might prefer something like "The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Broadway Collection".
Disappointed.......2005-03-11
The singer(s)does not do justice for the lyrics. It was grating to the ears. Save your money for the originals.
Musical Talent at Its Best.......2003-01-03
What a pleasure to hear a collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's beautiful music from such wonderful voices accompanied by an outstanding symphony. This sensational CD is a treasure to own.

Dolores Gray in her element.......2003-11-26
DESTRY RIDES AGAIN is the musical version of the popular James Stewart-Marlene Dietrich film of the same name. Harold Rome's score is given a much-needed lift from the delicious Dolores Gray, who could sing out entries from the dictionary and steal your heart.
Dolores Gray (TWO ON THE AISLE) takes on the Marlene Dietrich role of saloon singer Frenchie. Andy Griffith plays the role of Destry, with a cast led by Scott Brady, Libi Staiger and Jack Prince.
Needless to say, apart from Gray's numbers, the score is very average. Gray infuses her numbers, including "Ladies", "I Know Your Kind", "I Hate Him" (not to be confused with the song from CARNIVAL!), "Fair Warning" and "I Say Hello" with more sass and fanfare than they deserve.
DESTRY RIDES AGAIN opened in the same season that saw the acclaimed long-runners FIORELLO!, THE SOUND OF MUSIC and GYPSY. Other shows that quickly sank in the same season were FIRST IMPRESSIONS and JUNO.
All-in-all, Dolores Gray is the only reason to buy this cast album.
ENJOYABLE AND ENERGETIC --- BUT NOT A TRULY GREAT RIDE.......2003-02-09
Michael Kidd's "Destry," with music and lyrics by Harold Rome, is a zesty, rousing reminder of how great even marginal musicals of the '50s were. Produced the same year as "Gypsy," "The Sound of Music" and "Fiorello," the score contains no standards, but has some lovely ensembles and ballads, as well as some wonderful whoop-it-up western tunes. Starring Andy Griffith, who had yet to discover the idyllic pleasures of Mayberry and sultry Dolores Gray and based on the Marlene Dietrich-Jimmy Stewart comedy, "Destry" would be a welcome addition to any musical buff's library ... even if you won't be too eager to let it ride again and again on your CD player. Thank You, Dolores Gray!!!.......2002-11-09
The incomparable Dolores Gray mesmerizes on this Broadway Cast Recording from 1959. Her recent death makes the work she displays here even more poignant. She was one of a kind who deserved more fame and accolades than she ever got, because her talent was one for the ages. There is no other Broadway voice (including Merman) to compare to hers, and she displays all of her versatility on this recording. From the ballads "I Say Hello" and "Anyone Would Love You" to the roof-raising "Fair Warning", Gray shines in her quintessential role as Frenchy. Andy Griffith makes a surprisingly good foil, and his singing, while not in the same league as Gray, suits the proceedings just fine. Harold Rome, an underrated composer, wrote his finest score for this somewhat forgotten musical, but it is really Dolores Gray who is the draw here. Also, check out the Broadway Cast Recording of "Two on the Aisle" and the MGM musicals "Kismet", "The Opposite Sex" and "It's Always Fair Weather" to experience Gray in all her splendor. Anyone would love her!
Destry IS Dolores Gray.......2002-06-30
What a great, under-sung winner this is. A rousing score by Harold Rome, great orchestrations by Lehman Engel, with stirring, personality-filled voices of the kind you don't hear on Broadway any longer, most notably, the one-of-a-kind Dolores Gray. To the general public (in America, at least) Gray may not be as famous as such legendary Broadway divas as Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, Elaine Stritch, Angela Lansbury and others, but she was every bit their equal. In fact, when she did Annie Get Your Gun in London, critics praised her singing and performance as miles ahead of Merman's. She had a stunningly warm and powerful voice, sultry, sly comic chops, a spectacular figure and a tart, acerbic personality. A Tony-winner and nominee several times over, she was adored by critics right up to her final "big" performance in the London revival of Stephen Sondheim's "Follies," in which her biggest number, "I'm Still Here" stopped the show cold nightly. Sondheim reportedly told many people that Gray was the one brilliant thing in the whole revival. On film, in "Kismet" and "The Opposite Sex," we get hints of what dynamite she was. Here, on "Destry, " too, we can at least get a sense of what a knockout shemust have been on stage. The show sounds very much in the tradition of Whopee, Annie Get Your Gun, Oklahoma and Paint Your Wagon. I can't imagine any musical fan not finding it worthwhile.
