well i know ryan joe and some and the other guys in the band
ryan is a great singer and joe is a asome drumer and on this
album wake up sreeming the sownd is asome the guitar and drums
are asome i love this album so buy this album if you like the
band thanks mike
It really isn't good, dispite the 4-star Amazon rating.......2004-01-13
I have every Slick Shoes album except for the self titled EP. Thank god I started with Rusty and Burn Out and not this or I wouldn't have bought another SS album. All songs suffer from the same thing: they aren't consistent. A song may start out fine but then descends into what seems to be random drumming, monotenous singing and drab lyrics (never a strong point of SS)
I did listen to it for quite a while and on different occasions, 'cuz maybe I just wasn't ready for this "new" direction SS was going, but to this day I still very much dislike the album. The follow up Self-titled album was a step in the right direction, but still not that great. Thankfully they've redeemed themselves with Far from Nowhere, which sounds more like Rusty and Burn Out.
Only recommended to hardcore SS fans and if this is your first SS album, no NOT start with Wake Up Screaming
Excellent music!!!!.......2003-11-16
This cd is one of my favorites based on the lyrics alone. Ryan's voice on this cd is awesome. It is true some songs are a bit repetitive but that isn't a bad thing in this case.Angel is by far the best track on this album, probably one of their best songs ever. This isn't Slickshoes' best cd but it's very good and if you like punk or just good music, get this one especially if you are a Slick Shoes fan.
I would just like to say..........2003-03-20
I would just like to say that punk rock is not only political rock, as one such person (who shall go unnamed for the moment) said. Punk rock has several sub-genres just like any other type of music. Slick Shoes, a three-piece Christian punk band, would probably fall more under the pop punk category...but PUNK nonetheless! This is a great band. Their song Angel is one of my personal favorites. The lyrics are so poetic, but they manage to keep a beat that makes you just want to jam out while driving or sitting at your computer or wherever you are.
3.5 stars.......2003-03-20
This is ONE OF their worst CDs, but it is still worth a listen and is much better than most mainstream punk bands. Best Tracks are 1,2,3,4,5,7, and 11. This isn't their greatest, so I'll show the order of greatness
1.) Slick Shoes (Self-Titled)
2.) Rusty
3.) Burn Out
4.) WAKE UP SCREAMING
5.) Self Titled Ep
So I hope I have helped you in your choice, but also check out some sample songs and choose for yourself. If you already own this, then check out Rusty, and their Self Titled as well.

Customer Reviews:
Wow, this is amazing.......2007-01-22
Cool Hand Luke really hit it big with me on this album. Beautiful vocals, lyrics and music in a style all their own to back it up with is what you'll find when you listen to Cool Hand Luke. Now let this be a warning to some, the reviewer below me didn't like this album so I'm assuming he was looking for something heavier....CHL IS VERY MELLOW MUSIC. If you want heavy with good lyrics, move along to Dizmas or The Myriad.
creative.......2005-04-15
i bought this cd originally because i went on their website a long time ago and they had a bunch of samples i liked. their choruses are musically and emotionally powerful.
however, upon listening to the cd you kind of get the feeling that they write an awesome chorus, then feel obligated to fill it up with some verses. the pace of the cd is kinda slow but i like it. also, their guitar melodies interlock beautifully and very creatively.
overall i personally enjoy this cd but for recommendation's sake, i don't think a lot of people would enjoy the pacing or the content as much as i.
The hype.......2004-12-29
I heard all the hype behind this cd and when I finally heard it I found it to be very "boring". Nothing really stands out too much here. If you are a fan of the band in general and have heard them play you might really be a fan of this band but in general they sound like alot of other bands out there. Nothing to write home about.
One of the best out there!!!.......2004-05-30
After I saw them at Ichthus music festival last year I was instantly sold out to Cool Hand Luke's music. I saw an intensity like no other in Contemporary Christian music and a sincerity that I had not seen out of musicians in a long time. Their concerts are hard to describe because they aren't concerts that you can bob your head to but you just stand there and you become amazed by God's presence at the concert. The cd is the same way. "Wake up o sleeper" is a very mellow cd and one of my favorites. I love hardcore music but then I have fallen in love with Cool Hand Luke because of Mark's voice. I just love how Mark wears his emotions on his sleeve and I don't think the music being played is anything spectacular but the band knows it is for the glory of God. Their lyrics are very blatant Christian and I have no problem with that because that just shows that the members of Cool Hand Luke aren't afraid to show their faith. From the get go of "Heroes will be Heroes" which I believe is talking about Peter till the last song on the cd Cool Hand Luke is intense in their own way and beautiful at the same time. Their songs have moved me to tears and when you buy this cd you will know why tears flow from my eyes whenever I listen to this cd. This band is very hard to categorize but I would classify them in the same category that Coldplay is classified as. Go support these guys because they are spectacular and true God-fearing men. God bless.
To call this "Christian" music is insulting.......2004-04-10
Musically and philosophically CHL have managed rise above one of the evangelical christian church's most embarressing endeavors,Contemporary Christian Music. A genre imfamous for a tepid ethos, lyrics that do little more than spout cliches and enforce the evangelical theology, and musical compositions that are "safe" and "positive", unlike those godless heathen bands.
As a group of Christians, Cool Hand Luke have managed to avoid many of these misfortunate errors. Relatively speaking, their compositions are complex, which lean towards a build up of tension and a cathartic release. Lyrics usually follow the standard bridge and chorus, but many of their verses contain layers of vivid imagery, which provides a colorful backdrop to their message. Speaking of their message, they are a bit preachy for my own taste when it comes to expressing their faith; but, their lyricism does provide a socially conscious, challenging, and articulate perspective on the human experience for what it is, instead of trying to sell a lolly pop candyland version of reality.
If you still need to limit yourself to Christian music, or are interested in hearing a group of christians who attempted to actually create some unique music, give this album a listen.

One Of Petra's Heavier Offerings.......2006-12-05
Throughout their thirty-plus years as a band, Petra has had quite a number of member changes. With that, of course, comes a varied musical styling on each of their albums. "Wake-Up Call" falls into the heavier category of Petra's catalogue of albums. Although their last studio album, "Jekyll and Hyde," is probably their heaviest album, "Wake-Up Call" is not too far behind. This is shown through powerful arena rock tunes like "Sleeping Giant" and "Midnight Oil." Other heavier tunes on this album include "Strong Conviction" and "Underneath The Blood." Of course, no Petra album would be complete without a couple of ballads, and the tunes that fit the bill here are "Just Reach Out" and "Marks Of The Cross."
Fans of Petra's "Beyond Belief" album and "No Doubt" will definitely enjoy this album. It has a very good balance of powerful arena rock and lighter ballads. It's one of Petra's best John Schlitt-era albums and is definitely worthy of purchase.
Highly recommended.
Okay - I'm Just A Little Biased About This Album.......2006-10-20
And here's why. After becoming a full-fledged Christian, I initially bought some of the "WOW" series of hits, and decided that I really liked the sound of Petra. So I decided to take the plunge, and this was my first Christian album by a single artist. I've often thought that the Lord guided my choice, because I still believe this is one of Petra's better albums. Petra had an inate ability to do a heartfelt ballad like "He's Been In My Shoes" and the direct "Just Reach Out"; but also to rock as hard as anyone as evidenced by the vibrant "Midnight Oil" and "Sleeping Giant". "Good News" is also one of my (quiet-music-preferring) wife's favorite Petra songs. I believe that "More Power To Ya", "Beyond Belief" and "Praise 2" are Petra's best; but this was a band that was so good that the second tier of their music was abundantly better than that of most of their contemporaries. Fans will be able to tell you that the band's name means "Rock" - and they have always defined both connotations of that term; both a loud, rocking band and a cornerstone on which Christian rock has always relied.
Very solid effort.......2006-09-08
This album is a very solid effort from Petra, and is indicative of the direction they should have gone (and continued) with subsequent efforts. It sounds far more modern, more in tune with 90s music, and really works well for the band. Sure, it's southern rock and has a few country influences to it, but I like it!
I always found the ballad 'He's Been in my Shoes' really boring however, and this album does suffer with a few too many slow songs on the second half (though 'Just Reach Out' is an amazing song lyrically and musically). Indeed, the first two songs really rock, and so do a few on the second half, but a lot of this album is more 'poppy' than previous efforts.
Blame it on the producer (pop producer Brown Bannister was behind the wheel of this one), or just the fact that Petra was getting older ... this still is a standout album in that it's a group effort, it sounds more modern and less 80s, and there's just some really fun songs to listen to.
Overall a very solid effort from Petra.
Still sounds good.......2005-04-24
Petra is an unusual band in two respects: they've been around since 1974, and as a Christian ministry, their music is mainly a vehicle for their message. They've had to periodically re-invent their sound in order to keep reaching as wide an audience as possible. If you listen to their back catalogue in order (which will take a while!), you can identify the records on which the musical chameleon that is Petra changes colour. "Wake Up Call" is one of them.
As a rabid fan of Petra's late '80s stadium rock sound (think "On Fire", "Unseen Power" and the incomparable "Beyond Belief"), I still remember shoving in my new cassette (!!) back in 1993 and listening in shock to their tight, stripped-down, bluesy new sound.
Bob Hartman takes a few licks out of Angus Young's book, while experimenting with guitar sounds from heavy blues to airy pop-rock. Louie Weaver enjoys all the extra drum notes he can play now that there isn't 3 seconds of reverb on each one. Ronny Cates keeps his tasty 5-string bass grooves tight and in the pocket. John Lawry (keys) adds colour and reminds us that the '80s weren't that long ago, and John Schlitt puts in his usual powerful performance behind the mike.
There are enough good tunes on this record to provide some good highlights for just about any listener, but for me there are two big ones. The smooth, driving groove in the verse and catchy chorus of "Praying Man", and the moving gospel-rock anthem "Just Reach Out" which still leaves me moist-eyed after a good listen.
I didn't give it five stars for a couple of reasons. I've always been a fan of Bob's guitar work. And I've always admired and appreciated his no-nonsense lyrics which make such a change from the vague wish-wash a lot of Christian artists sing. The problem is that Bob is a slave to rhyme, which results in quite a few lyrics that are awkward or trite. "Unseen Power" has more of these than most Petra records, but quite a few managed to sneak onto "Wake Up Call": "The wedding's gonna be so royal / So we gotta keep stayin' loyal / 'Cause our feet are gonna leave this soil..." Oh dear. The other reason is the lack of musical innovation on this record. A lot of the licks and chord sequences just leave me wondering where I've heard them before.
Overall, this is definitely worth a listen, both for the powerful spiritual message and foot-tapping bluesy rock hooks. If you want to hear Petra at their best, however, get "Beyond Belief". Then maybe get this.
Best Petra - heaviest song .......2004-11-12
Thiis is the best Petra Ive heard, better than Not Of This World, Back To The Street and Beyond Belief. The classic 1980s rock and hair metal formula is followed here, with ten songs in total, number one being the fastest track, number six the heaviest and best, and number ten a power ballad. The opener Midnight Oil is fast and its got a good fast and I think original riff that just repeats many times. Reminds me of Aces High by Iron Maiden on Powerslave with one simple fast riff being repeated with and without the vocal backing.
Theres a few ballad-type songs here such as Marks Of The Cross, Just Reach Out and He's Been In My Shoes, that are highly effective, but overall the album is pretty much on the heavy side. Underneath The Blood is most likely Petra's heaviest ever song, one of their few that seems heavy to the extent of making a point from the heaviness, but lyrically and musically its a fantastic song, my favorite ever from this group. The guitars sound less sugary than on Beyond Belief. Much better.
As usual, from Petra, lyrically the album is full of great helpful, positive and detailed christian teaching. There's more spiritual food here in the lyrics than youd get at good many churches over a three month period. Its practical, accurate and encouraging christian teaching.
Underneath The Blood of course is about salvation through faith in the blood of Jesus, He's Been In My Shoes is about Jesus walking the path in life before that we walk now, Midnight Oil is based on Matthew Chapter 25, about how we need the Holy Spirit Oil on a regular basis and Marks Of The Cross is about serving others with the right heart.
The lyrics on all the songs are not seemingly about the same topic but they seem to sit well together and compliment each other. Better lyrics than on Beyond Belief and Back To The Street by a long way, or maybe just more relevant for me personally.
If your in a down place in your life or need direction, read the lyrics here from start to finish, and play this album many times. For sure, you will be blessed and encouraged. GodBless

Wake Up, World!.......2002-04-05
Spiritual Pieces told it best on this album; they are here to stir up some mess in Jesus' name...and they surely have done that. They are no doubt a group to be on the look-out for. All of the tracks on this one are of good quality, but the ones that really stuck with me are "Show of Hands", "I Need You", "Content", "He's in You", and "Victory". Listen to this as well as their newer album "Soul Food". A different vibe from the gospel you're used to hearing, but trust me, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Deserves a wider audience.......2000-02-22
This is a really smooth sounding album. I think "Show of Hands" is the best song on the album. I wish every song on here were that awesome, but the rest of the album is also good. I hope acts like Spiritual Pieces make it to the Christian mainstream to add some diversity to the CCM community. If it weren't for the gospel station here (WJNI), I would have never heard this great music. I look forward to whatever SP does next.
Very, cool and relaxing...definitely praises Him.......1999-07-15
This is the perfect CD for Christians that love jazzy, relaxing music. They praise the Savior and are not ashamed of the gospel of Christ!! I love it, however, the interlude with Kevin Nash was a little too secular. That is why I rated the CD 4 stars instead of 5.
Christian teen loves this album!!.......1999-07-13
I first saw this group at a Teen Summit taping concerning urban Christian music. They were tight! They are definitely a group you wanna see live. You can tell they are singing from a relationship with God and not just trying to entertain. Track #3 is a good Christian party song. I also liked the song that talks about being holy! It's about time people realized that we are to live a different lifestyle then the people who don't know God!! They have some really beautiful worship songs at the end especially Victory is in the PRaise! Anyway!! :o) Much success Spiritual Pieces!! You are loved in Richmond, Virginia!! MAy God keep you and protect you!!
IT IS FUNKY, TRENDY ,INSPIRING AND GOD GLORIFING.......1999-06-03
I AM DELIGHTED TO SAY THAT I HAVE NOT STOPPED LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM SINCE I ACQUIRED IT. IT CAPTURES THE CURRENT MUSIC TREND AND AT THE SAME TIME IT CONVEYS A POSITIVE MESSAGE ACROSS. THE QUALITY AND STYLE OF THE MUSIC IS BEYOND IMAGINATION AND I WOULD RECOMEND IT TO EVERYONE
