5 out of 5 stars If you want a Madacy collection of classic hymns, THIS is the CD set to buy.......2007-01-25

As best I can tell, Madacy first released the 3-CD box set entitled "100 Best Loved Hymns" in 2001, featuring various artists performing traditional classics. (It's been re-released every year or two since then, for some reason). Since the original release, those same 100 tracks -- same singers, same musicians, same arrangements -- have been mixed and matched into so many other CDs that I keep uncovering them. Some or all of these original tracks have been used in different combinations to produce: "100 Hymns and Praise Classics" (4-CD box set), attributed to 'Various Artists'; "50 Hymns & Praise Favorites" (2-CD set) and "50 Hymns & Praises" (3 CDs), attributed to the Joslin Grove Choral Society; "A Treasury of Golden Hymns" and "50 Amazing Hymns", attributed to the Great Plains Chorale; and "Inspirations: 50 Best Loved Hymns", disingenuously attributed to Thomas Kinkade solely because he provided the cover art. All of these CDs are posted separately on the Amazon site.

Of all of those releases, this is one that has all 100 tracks. At the time of this writing, its cost is comparable to (or sometimes less than) that of the releases that have fewer than the full 100 tracks, especially on Amazon Marketplace. Thus, if you like the Madacy collection of classic hymns, this is the logical one to buy. (Suitable alternatives are the earlier releases of this 3-CD box set, or the 4-CD "100 Hymn and Praise Classics", all of which have exactly the same tracks.)

Regarding the content of this oft-released, multi-titled, multi-attributed collection of tracks, the hymns are sung in traditional arrangements, often with a full choir accompanied by a piano or organ. Some are by soloists or smaller groups of singers, accompanied by a piano. If you're looking for a solid traditional presentation of these classics, you will probably not be disappointed. I would give the music 4 stars rather than 5 because some of this choral group's soloists on some tracks -- while good singers -- have voices that are perhaps not sufficiently smooth and mellow to allow them to come across well as soloists on a recording. However, I have boosted the rating to 5 stars for this particular box set because it is the full 100-track version, and I want to distinguish it from the 4-star ratings that I have given to the other releases having fewer than the full 100 tracks.

Album Description

A collection of the World's best loved hymns. The St. Olaf recording Great Hymns of Faith has been the choir's best selling release.

Dr. Anton Armstrong is the Harry and Thora Tosdal Professor of Music and conductor of the St. Olaf Choir. The interests of Dr. Armstrong, who succeeded Kenneth Jennings in 1990, lie in the tradition of Western European choral music, 20th century compositions and folk music arrangements from the U.S. and the wider global community.

Armstrong grew up on Long Island, New York. He was a member of the American Boychoir, an American counterpoint of the Vienna Boys Choir. Armstrong graduated from St. Olaf in 1978 with a Bachelor of Music degree. He continued his studies at the University of Illinois, earning a Master of Music degree in choral music, and at Michigan State University, where he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree.

Armstrong is a frequent guest conductor, lecturer, and clinician throughout North America and in Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, and the Caribbean.

This is the second CD by the St. Olaf Choir I have purchased, and I was not disappointed. I do think that some of the hymn arrangements were a bit much, but I am Lutheran after all. Still, the choir is unbeatable in diction, you can understand every word, which is really important. Over all, a good addition to the collection.

St Olaf is by far the choir I like the most.

However, the arrangements of some pieces are "too much" for my taste. I would prefer arrangements that show the beauty of simple chorales - what Lutherans are good at. (Other listeners may have a different preference.)

3 out of 5 stars SOME BEAUTIFUL SELECTIONS AND SOME DISAPOINTMENT.......2004-10-07

The simple renditions of such hymns as "Great is Thy Faithfulness" and "What a Friend" are by far the most satisfying of the selections of `Great Hymns of Faith' on this recording. The renditions of hymns arranged by John Ferguson and Robert Schultz are also quite appealing. Where this album falls short is in Anton Armstrong's leadership of the three classic hymn arrangements by F. Melius Christiansen, the founder and original director of the St. Olaf Choir. "Praise to the Lord" is particularily disappointing. It is mannered in the extreme and totaly misses the spirit of this great choral standard. To hear this selection sung as it was supposed to be, one must listen to the choir under the direction of its previous conductor Kenneth Jennings (refer to the CD "Reflections of Norway," the Saint Olaf Choir, Dr. Kenneth Jennings, conductor).

The same could be said about the most famous of all the arrangements on this recording, Christiansen's "Beautiful Savior." The soloist has obviously been instructed to strip all color and vibrato from her voice, thus causing her to sound tenative and amaturish. I know (from personal experience) that some of these directors of accapella choirs go for a very `straight' and colorless sound. This is obviously the tone quality for which Mr. Armstrong is striving.

To summarize, when this great choir is allowed to just sing out it sounds fabulous, and is very musically fulfilling. When not...well, you be the judge...

My Mother always sang many of these hymns while she cooked dinner (in New Jersey). I knew the words when we were in church because I'd heard them so many times. This was 40 years ago, so I can't tell you the beautifu memories and feelings these selections bring with them. I love their simplicity, yet heart felt delivery...just beautiful....my daughter loves them too, and remembers Nana. It was a beautiful peaceful time. Thank you!

I do not care for southern christian music. A lot of the titles on this cd are from the south. I want a cd with Hymns from the early protestant reformation days. Amazing Grace, A mighty fortress is our God, and Come thou Fount which were in the cd, but buried under a bunch of shallow southern hymns.
Please come up with a cd with only early protestant reformation hymns which include the ones I already mentioned above, but also include And can it be, Holy, Holy, Holy, and Be thou My vision. Hymns from this time period have so much more depth and are so much more meaningful.

5 out of 5 stars Hymns in the Anglican Tradition Beautifully Performed.......2007-01-24

This is one more example of hymns in the Anglican Tradition, sung by the always excellent choir of King's College, Cambridge. It is a splendid example of the sonorous sound of men and boys, accompanied by a classic English organ and, for the quieter hymns, the gentle sound of harp. All the familiar hymns and hymn tunes are here. You will not regret adding this CD to your collection.

I always enjoy listening to this Cd and particularly because of the orchestra and mellifluous choir. I especially enjoy: A Mighty Fortress, Come Down, O Love Divine, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, and Thine Be The Glory. Some of the selections are soft such as "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears." Still, it is a fabulous selection and one of my favorites.

This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.

Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.

Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.

The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).

The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.

Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!

Having heard Kings College Choir twice, in the flesh, at Kings, this CD is a wonderful example of what you might hear. If you can't make it to Cambridge, buy this CD. It contains many of the old favorites and also some hymns that are not found on other English hymn CD's.

Having visited many Cathedrals throughout the UK and listened to the enchanting voices of the boys choirs, I was disappointed with this particular rendering from Kings. Perhaps I am biased in that I enjoy the organ background or no background but the use of a full blown orchestra, in my opinion, tended to overwhelm and was totally unnecessary and somewhat grandoise choice on the part of Stephen Cleobury. Apart from that, much of the music was excellent. In comparison with other CD's from Kings, this was disappointing.

    Bradley Sowash is quite simply one of the best pianists on the contemporary scene. It is impossible to pigeon-hole him into one category, as his style continues to evolve and grow, making each of his recordings a unique experience. "We Gather Together" is a fascinating collection of jazz arrangements and improvisations on some of the best-loved hymns and spirituals of all time. Sowash's solo piano is so strong and expressive that he commands an entire orchestra, choir, and congregation with his ten fingers and eighty-eight keys! His arrangements are extremely personal, and yet communicate universally. Many of the arrangements include traditional gospel styles as part of the "theme and variations", and others are a bit "smoother." The addition of the history of many of the hymns as well as Sowash's personal experiences in putting this album together make reading the liner notes richly satisfying, adding even more dimension to the work as a whole.
    The collection opens with "Amazing Grace", probably the best-known and best-loved American hymn of all time. Sowash gives it both sacred and secular treatments. "Wade in the Water" is a real treat and one of my favorites. With ragtime and stride elements, this is a toe-tapper! "Jesus Loves Me" was a real surprise. A favorite childhood Sunday School song, I never would have imagined that the sweet, simple little melody could become such a complex jazz tune! Great fun! I wasn't familiar with "Deep River", but this arrangement is evocative and funky at the same time. Dark and earthy with lots of deep bass notes and chords, this is another favorite. "There Is a Balm in Gilead" takes a somewhat quieter approach, and builds momentum as it develops. All fourteen tracks are excellent, and give a showcase to Sowash's broad range of styles while keeping a cohesive theme. I give "We Gather Together" both thumbs up and am including it in my "Best of 2001" list. Very highly recommended!

    Bradley Sowash is a jazz pianist who knows how to make the jazz come to life in hymns and spirituals for solo jazz piano performance! WE GATHER TOGETHER showcases the many styles and jazz interpretations of Sowash as he performs his innovative arrangements of 14 spiritual standards. Among these gems of musical expression are "Amazing Grace," "Wade in the Water," "Bringing in the Sheaves," "Jesus Loves Me," "Poor Wayfaring Stranger," "Deep River," "What A Friend We Have In Jesus," among other songs.

    When a jazz pianist as good as Bradley Sowash puts his imaginative touch to these songs, it is a genuine sharing experience with the audience, and one to be remembered. His playing is flawless, and his piano techniques are varied and creative as readily seen in "There Is A Balm in Gilead," and "The River Is Wide."

    Sowash is a master of stride piano and reveals his talent for this complex piano style in "Wade in the Water." His stride style is topnotch.

    As best I can tell, Madacy first released the 3-CD box set, "100 Best Loved Hymns" in 2001, featuring various artists performing traditional classics. Since that time, those same 100 tracks -- same singers, same musicians, same arrangements -- have been mixed and matched into so many other CDs that I keep uncovering them. Some or all of these original tracks have been used in different combinations to produce: "100 Hymns and Praise Classics" (4-CD box set), attributed to 'Various Artists'; "50 Hymns & Praise Favorites" (2-CD set) and "50 Hymns & Praises" (3 CDs), attributed to the Joslin Grove Choral Society; "A Treasury of Golden Hymns" and "50 Amazing Hymns", attributed to the Great Plains Chorale; and, now, "Inspirations: 50 Best Loved Hymns", disingenuously attributed to Thomas Kinkade solely because he provided the cover art. All of these CDs are posted separately on the Amazon site.

    Anyone considering buying this CD should be aware of these numerous other options for obtaining the identical tracks, and consider them before buying this album. At the time of this writing, the 100-track 3- and 4-CD box sets can be purchased for the same price as, or less than, this 50-track "Kinkade" CD. The 100-track sets would thus seem to make a lot more sense.

    Regarding the content of this oft-released, multi-titled, multi-attributed collection of tracks, the hymns are sung in traditional arrangements, often with a full choir accompanied by an organ. Some are by soloists or smaller groups of singers, accompanied by a piano or other instruments. If you're looking for a solid traditional presentation of these classics, you will probably not be disappointed. I give the music 4 stars rather than 5 because I feel that this choral group's soloists on some tracks -- while good singers -- have voices that are perhaps not sufficiently smooth and mellow to allow them to come across well as soloists on a recording.

      I've been looking for this recording of Finlandia for some time. I've had it for years on vinyl, and have worn it out. Ormandy, The Philadelphia Symphony and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir make this the most stirring performance of this work you will hear. They hymn is beautifully renderd and this selection alone makes the album worth the price.
