Collins closed out the '80s with the chart-topping ...But Seriously, which spawned four mega-hit singles and also mirrored its title in a turn toward more pensive, socially conscious fare, such as "Another Day in Paradise" and "That's Just the Way It Is." The set also contains Collins's finest batch of lost-love songs ("Do You Remember," "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven," "I Wish It Would Rain Down") since his first two albums, meaning, likely as not, that art was served at the expense of yet another relationship. Collins is aided on the album by some of his famous friends, including Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Stephen Bishop, and David Crosby. --Daniel Durchholz

1 out of 5 stars Seriously Awful.......2007-04-18

This one continued Phil's path toward artistic oblivion, with his blandest collection of bland synth pop yet. Phil tries to dress up the blandness with grade school social consciousness (I remember his defensively explaining on The David Letterman Show, where they ridiculed the awful banality of "Su-su-sudio," that he had social consciousness too), but like the music the lyrics are superficial and trite. Phil was McCartney to Peter Gabriel's Lennon, without the melodic talent of McCartney. A sad disappointment to his old fans, though I guess Phil cried all the way to the bank.

4 out of 5 stars more organic & less production than 1985's NJR.......2007-01-08

(november 1989) Lots of good musicians on this one - Clapton, Crosby, Winwood, Bishop, Leland Sklar, Pino Paladino, & more. By this time, Collins had established himself as a heavily sought after drummer & producer outside genesis & his solo stuff. So when it came time to ask his buddies clapton & others to join in they could only say yes... This album is much more organic & unproduced than no jacket required & really a different album all together. The pheonix horn's (originally from EWF, who had toured with collins & played on last 3 solo albums) sounds much more stripped down but as technical as NJR. Collins (alone & with genesis & others) has a reputation of not recording live all at once. instead he chooses to record a guide rhythm part & then lets each musician lay their parts on top of it as to let the players work on their parts & improvise to perfection. This album, though, was recorded more live with more of the musicians playing together in the studio simulaneously. This was a bit of a new direction for collins as he is known as an incredible perfectionist. Also, this album was recorded at the Gensis studio (the farm) & in LA which, I think, leads to it sounding a bit uneven. this album is also much more politically & socially expressive as collins writes more about homelessness & political strife in the world (another day in paradise, colors, heat on the street, others). This album also finds Collins getting away from the divorce-based love songs he is so well known for in his solo work. His drumming & acoustics are, as usual profoundly awesome & much less electronic as he decided to use mostly his acoutic gretsch drums on this one. There is also less drum machine & more percussion. Also, collins's & david crosby's harmony's are incredible as their slightly monotone voices complement eachother perfectly (another day in paradise & that's just the way it is). Phil also shows his ability to play great rhythm piano (electric yamaha cp-70) parts he is so well known for (colors & do you remember). This album was followed by a 130 date world tour & was #1 in US & UK for most of 1990 with four top 5 hits (per usual with collins & genesis albums). Clapton also does awesome work on wish it would rain down. This album shows collins's ability to change musical directions & also be very commercially successful. Great Album!!!

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars not enough for 12 timeless diamonds .......2006-07-23

This is album is not only the best album of Phil Collins but most propably the best pop album that has ever been released. All the songs are fabulus. The orchestrations are unique, the vocals are great, and the lyrics are inspiring. I bought this cd just when it came out and it was either the first or the second cd that I have ever bought (before that I was bying vynil records). I still have it and I love listening to it. I highly recommend it. Check the list of the songs it contains and I am certain that somewhere, somehow you have heard most of these songs.

5 out of 5 stars one last '80s masterpiece from the phenomenal Phil.......2006-06-22

Let's face it, Phil Collins ruled in the '80s. Both with his solo career and with Genesis, Phil was a HUGE commercial force, and it's a case where the commercial success was truly deserved--throughout the decade, this guy gave us a godlike amount of deeply moving and intoxicatingly catchy music that had a wide-ranging appeal. How could you resist the guy?

Released in November of 1989, "...But Seriously" is a somewhat transitional effort for Phil. With the possible exception of the album-opening "Hang In Long Enough", Phil completely abandons the synthesized dance-rock sound of "No Jacket Required"--drum machines are still very much present, but they're used much more moderately, with Phil's real live drumming in full force on all of the non-ballad numbers this time around. And, as the title suggests, Phil gets more capital 'S' "serious" with the lyrics, tackling such issues as apartheid, ghetto violence, and homelessness, in addition to his usual introspective and romance-themed material. Phil had begun to really put his money where his mouth was in the late '80s/ early '90s regarding the homelessness issue, a theme which can actually be traced all the way back to "Man On The Corner" from Genesis' 1981 "Abacab" album, but Phil makes it much more explicit here, particularly on the huge hit "Another Day In Paradise".

Phil's move away from 'just-plain-fun' a la "Sussudio" and toward more political writing seems to have been partly an attempt to silence his detractors; this backfired somewhat, as his attempts at social commentary were accused of being overly simplistic, and I'll admit there is some merit in this accusation. There's a visible formula that Phil established here and would continue to use on his next couple albums--use a series of scene-setting verses, then alternate it with a chorus that features a 'one-line summation' of it all, such as "it's just another day for you and me in paradise" or "that's just the way it is". Phil himself admitted in a promo interview around the time of "...But Seriously"'s release that he's "not a very well read person" and that he lives his life "by common sense". All that said, Phil's attempts at social commentary here are undeniably earnest, well-intentioned, and generally quite thoughtful. Two of them feature striking harmony vocals from David Crosby--the moody "Another Day In Paradise", with its creepy intro, arpegiatted guitars and pensive guitar harmonics (from Dominic Miller), and swooping bass line (from Leland Sklar), is heart-wrenchingly beautiful; and the Northern Ireland-themed "That's Just The Way It Is" is also really moving and typically atmospheric. The 8 & 1/2+ minute "Colours", about South Africa, is a musical tour-de-force, starting off with a gorgeous ballad section, then featuring a percussion-drenched segue which eventually gives way to a rousing, uptempo, horn-laden pop-rocker, and the quasi-coda really brings closure to this epic track. "Heat On The Street", which Phil originally wrote for The Four Tops, swings along with an irresistible catchiness, punctuated by great wordless background vocals.

"Hang In Long Enough" is kind of an ironic album-opener. People had already accused "Sussudio", the opening song on "No Jacket Required", for sounding like a rip-off of Prince's "1999", but "Hang In Long Enough" takes this a step further, with the main riff being an almost direct clone, but it's an incredibly fun, rousing song in its own right, with Phil going all-out vocally.

As for the rest of the big hits... "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven", co-written by Daryl Stuermer and originally written for the movie "The War Of The Roses", is uncharacterically weak, with the lyrics being a virtual cliche-a-thon. But there are a couple of terrific lost-love ballads including "Do You Remember", with a soaring middle-eight and Phil's close friend Stephen Bishop singing all of the song's background vocals; and the majestic, gospel-ish "I Wish It Would Rain Down" which features Eric Clapton on lead guitar.

"All Of My Life" is a tender ballad that feels a little generic for Phil, plus it blatantly derives from the Tootsie theme "It Might Be You" which, not so coincidentally, was performed by Stephen Bishop, but it's still affecting, and enhanced by some tasteful Hammond organ playing from Steve Winwood.

The album's penultimate track is the heart-wrenching ballad "Father To Son", written for Phil's then pre-teen son Simon. And the closer "Find A Way To My Heart" is a joyful uptempo feel-good tune with great spirited vocals from Phil.

So, despite the minor gripes, "...But Seriously" is still a masterpiece by any realistic measure. The weakest tracks are hardly bad, and even if you ignore them, you're left with so much prime Phil Collins material, no one in the right mind could possibly go wrong.

(P.S. There are a load of non-album b-sides from this era, including an intriguing 3/4 time demo of "Another Day In Paradise" entitled "Homeless"; the super fun, riffy pop-rocker "That's How I Feel"; and another quality pop-rocker with "You've Been In Love (That Little Bit Too Long)".)

4 out of 5 stars But seriously.......2006-03-28

This is a good album but it is very emotional phil colins talks about the 3rd world and people ignoring homeless people. I would recommend this album but can be very upseting.

5 out of 5 stars 30 years later, still playing the original vinyl..........2007-06-23

I was 14 that summer day when I made my weekly bicycle trip to our local record store (yes, imagine that: a locally owned record store) where "But Seriously Folks" was being piped through the shop. I immediately picked up a copy and am still enjoying this beautifully written and performed album by Joe Walsh almost 30 years later. It's unfortunate that the corporately-owned, big, conglomerate, commercial radio stations choose only to play "Life's Been Good". In this case, that's like having a prime rib dinner and choosing only to eat the baked potato. "Indian Summer" remains one of my favorites to this day as does this album among the hundreds of old 33's in my collection. Thanks so much for the music, Joe!

4 out of 5 stars Come Amazon.......2007-06-08

It would be nice if Amazon would record a sample of the guy actually singing the song.

4 out of 5 stars Joe proves he could do it again...and again, and again. 4 1/2.......2007-04-01

Production on this CD is phenomenal, musicianship is unreal. Joe is a true rocker and is very humorous, too. While he didn't take himself too seriously,he DID take the music and his talent seriously. Guitar lovers will totally dig on this one. The mixing and layering of instruments on this release is a case study of how to make rock records sound great. This is a must have CD,Folks!

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Album By Joe, But Speaking Seriously..........2007-03-18

Thus is a very good album indeed, well crafted, great compositions. But much to my surprise, reading all the comments related, most of the reviewers seemed very well aware of Joe's work with The Eagles, here and there a comment about his tenure with James Gang, his previous albums "The Smoker You Drink" and "So What" but..not a single word or comparison of "Seriously..." with his MASTERPIECE "Barnstorm" . That's why I gave this album 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars "BUT SERIOUSLY FOLKS..." THIS IS A GOOD WELL MADE JOE WALSH ALBUM........2007-02-04

Readers and reviewers, I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "BUT SERIOUSLY FOLKS..." by one of Rock's greatest personalities and a member of the legendary band, THE EAGLES. I give you MR. JOE WALSH. "BUT SERIOUSLY FOLKS..." was originally released in 1978 on vinyl/LP and cassette on the Elektra Records label in association with a Time Warner Company. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

JOE WALSH is no stranger to Rock n' Roll. Prior to joining THE EAGLES in the mid 1970's, Walsh played in a very popular band in the early 70's called THE JAMES GANG. If you have never heard the rock classics such as "Walk Away" or "Funk #49," you are definitely missing out. These songs are the real rock stuff that are made of legend. When Joe Walsh joined the famed legendary band THE EAGLES, he would contribute in changing THE EAGLES sound into a more Rock n' Roll sound. "Hotel California" and "Life In The Fast Lane" are true testaments of WALSH'S Rock n' Roll sound. Now WALSH would take a break from THE EAGLES and head into the recording studio and record a solo album that would pretty much sum up his career. JOE WALSH would evolve from the recording studio and hand Elektra Records his masterpiece album entitled "BUT SERIOUSLY FOLKS..." In my opinion, this is a very well made album which contains one of the greatest Rock anthems of the 1970's ever recorded. When you listen to this album, it sounds just like a typical EAGLES album. Coincidently, EAGLES members Don Henley, Glen Frey, Don Felder and Timothy B. Schmit do lend a helping hand in the recording of this album. Believe it or not, the credits in this album do mention the late great John Entwhistle of THE WHO.

I will list and briefly review certain song tracks that are of great importance and relevance to this album. I will list these song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Over And Over," (This is well made song. The music does sound a little humorious. I love the way Walsh plays certain guitar chords in this rocker. Walsh does know how to rock when he lets loose. I like Walsh's sliding guitar solo in this one.) (3.) "Indian Summer," (This is a beautiful Rockin' song. This song sounds so much like THE EAGLES. The music sounds so heavenly and refreshing. The harmonies sound incredible.) (4.) "At The Station," (This is another well made Walsh Rocker. This song has similar chords to the classic Walsh song "In The City." This song also sounds alot like a typical JAMES GANG song. This song truly Rocks.) (7.) "Theme From Boat Weirdos" (I love this song. This is another beautifully well made instrumental song. Walsh does let loose a little with his guitar playing. This is another song that truly Rocks.) and (8.) "Life's Been Good." (Ah yes, this is my most favorite song on the whole album. In my opinion, this song is the main centerpiece of the whole album. This song should be voted as one of the greatest rock anthems of the 1970's. This song sounds like an all out EAGLES rocker. The lyrics are so humorous that we can almost relate to it, at least I can. This is a true rocker that defines what great Rock n' Roll is all about.) Overall, this is one hell of a album worth seeking out.

I would like to highly advise everyone to purchase this album for their own personal music collection. This legendary album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, JOE WALSH has managed to entertain us with his music and humor for many years. JOE WALSH has performed successfully on and off with THE JAMES GANG and THE EAGLES. Believe it or not, JOE WALSH did run as an independent for President Of The United States. As I am writing this review, THE EAGLES are in the process of releasing their first studio album in 25 years. This is great news for Rock n' Roll. I really do hope that THE EAGLES will stay together this time and grace us with more great albums in the near future. Rock n' Roll needs a great legendary band like THE EAGLES to keep Rock n' Roll breathing. So heres to you Joe, Don, Glen, Don F. and Timothy. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? GO EAGLES. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

2 out of 5 stars Totally disappointing comedy box leaves 'em asking..........2007-02-23

RHINO really screwed up with THE AMERICAN COMEDY BOX.

The cover has a raised image in plastic of a pair of Groucho gag eyeglasses (with nose and mustache). But look inside the package-- there's not a Marx Brother to be found anywhere! An excerpt of one of Groucho's many 1940s radio appearances would have been most welcome here. Speaking of radio--

There's -nothing- from Burns & Allen, Jack Benny, Milton Berle, Fred Allen or Fanny Brice-- vaudeville and radio stars all. So what do we get from that great comic medium? A lesser Stan Freberg single, a weak Henry Morgan track and two tepid Bob & Ray routines-- and that's IT. Oh-- and where are Jonathan Winters, Prof. Irwin Corey, Don Rickles, Bob Newhart, Pat Cooper, Rusty Warren, Don Adams and so many others? There's no Firesign Theater or P.D.Q. Bach on this album, either. So, why not???

A further problem are the tracks that ARE here. Smith & Dale were certainly "Pioneers," yet their recording isn't vintage-- it's the last one these old vaudevillians made, from the early 1960s. It seems that in the majority of other cases, better material was available. For instance, why an excerpt of 2000 AND TWO YEAR OLD MAN and not the original classic Brooks & Reiner routine? Why a Tom Lehrer song from 1965, instead of his great earlier stuff, or "Al 'N Yetta" rather than "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah"? ALL bad bad choices!

The guaranteed-to-disintegrate tabloid-style newspaper liner notes are a poor decision, too-- mine has already yellowed and frayed. Finally, why do the four CDs average only an hour each? For these reasons and more, THE AMERICAN COMEDY BOX could have been so much better! NOT recommended.

TOTAL RUNNING TIMES --
DISC ONE (Pioneers/Radio & The Movies/Musical Comedy) -- 59:47

3 out of 5 stars Memorable...but disappointing..........2002-04-25

Four CDs' worth of memorable moments from recorded comedy in the 20th Century. It can't help but be disappointing, at times, considering the breadth of material that could have been included, but one unforgivable flaw is that the CDs are simply not filled to capacity. (One disc is barely fifty minutes long, for example). Considering the asking price ..., this is inexcusable. That said, many great comics are represented (Lenny Bruce, Reiner and Brooks, Tom Lehrer, W.C. Fields, Shelley Berman, Spike Jones, Abbott and Costello, Allan Sherman, Bob and
Ray, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, the Credibility Gap and Steven Wright), as well as good to middling material from lesser lights. The liner notes (in the form of a mock newspaper--again with the chintz) are OK.

3 out of 5 stars A Scholarly Sampling Of Comedy.......2000-09-04

I had wanted this pricey CD box set for years. It was frankly, disappointing. Some of the recordings at the beginning, (they're listed chronologically), are of such poor quality that they're difficult to understand. Even though it was truly interesting listening to the individual styles, it's sort of a listen once then file it kind of deal. It's not something I'd listen to repeatedly or bring out at parties. I was also sorry to hear that many of the more recent entries have concepts or words that aren't appropriate for children to listen to, (i.e.Robin Williams' take on Lorena Bobbitt). It's not like Robin Williams has never worked clean and been funny at the same time.

On the more positive side, I learned a lot, both from the recordings and also from the extensive newspaper-style liner notes that accompany it. It also contains several comedy bits I remember having heard as a child in the 60's, such as those by the Smothers Brothers, Flip Wilson, and the classic "Who's On First" by Abbott & Costello. Okay, all things considered I guess I'm not sorry I bought it. It brought back memories, and allowed me to share some of them with my neice and nephew.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great singers around..........2001-11-08

It's not often one can listen to 30 second song samples and be blown away. But that was the case with this album before I got it. How good was it? I think I played it about 6 times the first day. Mark has a beautiful voice, sings with emotion and the ability to touch the deepest part of your soul, he handles many different styles well, and his phrasing is superb. He obviously chose the material carefully and makes sure you hear every word. I'm not sure what else one could want from a singer that Mark doesn't give you. The musicianship and production is first rate as well.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2001-09-01

I've been a fan of Mark's for years, and have always absolutely LOVED his singing. This album, however, takes the cake! He wrote on the inside of the cover that he when he decided to make this album, he wanted to do it as if it would be his last ever singing album -- and he's outdone himself. From the toe-tapping "Bein' Happy" (with backgrounds by the Gaither Vocal Band) to the absolutely breathtaking "We Fall Down" Mark proves that yes, he can sing, and yes, he can be serious. He sings like an angel, and further endeared himself to me. ReMarkable!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......1999-09-27

Mark is ReMarkable......saw him live and had to get his CD - I was so happy to find one of him just singing! What a talent....God has blessed Mark!

5 out of 5 stars He is a better singer than he is a comedian........1999-08-12

Always noted for his impish wit on stage this album puts Mark right up there with the best of the contemporary Southern Gospel male singers. I was more than pleasantly surprised I was even amazed at just how good Mark is on his own. It's obvious he doesn't need the rest of the Gaither Vocal Band to sing. Now if he just looked half as good as Candy Hemphill Christmas he would have it all.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Cd's ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1.......1999-06-23

Mark Loowry is the best singer/comedian ever. This album has something for everyone. It relly touched me.

Album Description

OK, boys and girls, here it is: the Travis Larson Band. Take an ex-reggae drummer, a chick bass player, and the NUTBOY who's been locked up in his room since pre-pubescence playing guitar, and there you have it. With rock-based, instrumental fusion of muscle and finesse, of intellect and passion, of the serene and the psychotic, these kids are tight and meaty.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Steve Morse fans.......2005-04-08

None of the other reviews mention the incredible similarity to Steve Morse. Since I can't get enough of Morse, when I heard Larson, that was it. I had to have all his stuff. Money well spent. Excellent!

5 out of 5 stars the best west coast band.......2002-12-15

this band rocks. they have great gutiar solos.

5 out of 5 stars A great blend of writing, trio playing and virtuoso guitar.......1999-08-11

It's rare to find a collection of instrumental tunes featuring such a consistent high quality of composition and performance. Travis clearly has some serious chops but uses them primarily to execute his musical ideas. What I like best is the ensemle playing...the music is written for a group of 3 talented musicians who sound big and play tight. While the CD showcases Travis' playing, you never get the feel that he's just blowin' notes over some oom-pah accompaniment. I'm not one to put anyones music in a little box, so I'll just comment that the influences I hear are rock, jazz, prog, fusion etc. I know that's rather broad but I think you get the idea. This is the kind of debut CD that makes one very anxious to hear what's in the pipeline. I must hear them live!

        Album Description

If you listen closely to Vinegar's music you might catch a hint of Barnum & Bailey or perhaps Cirque du Soleil. Like these established acts, Vinegar is dazzling, colorful, and well orchestrated. You can hear it in Francis' childlike voice and in their regular instrumental acrobatics. And when it's needed they're not afraid to breathe fire. Vinegar incorporated several traditional indie rock elements into their sound but with their flashy and complex arrangements it sounds like they ran off to join the circus!

"Rock Fetish", Vinegar's debut album, builds on the circus rock tradition. It presents a parade of images that include sunshine guns, cowboy rides, and a host of strange animals led by your ringmaster, Jerry Springer. The variety is astounding. It mixes personal with aggressive songs and conventional with unconventional arrangements. There's even a surprise solo acoustic song, 'Useless', and the bittersweet semi-acoustic 'Breathe Again'. These contrast with the heavy instrumental fireworks of 'Pig 92' and 'Sunshine Gun'. The sequencing of the songs keeps the listener engaged all the way through starting with the stunning 'Forkball' and ending with the five and a half minute epic, 'Too Many Pills'. Each song is its own musical moment. But the variety is balanced with a consistent approach to melody and an edginess that keeps it all grounded and cohesive.

Vinegar's "Rock Fetish" is guitarsy power pop that doesn't take itself too seriously, but seriously rocks out!
