While dated by its synthesized keyboard work, Heaven still stands as some of the best work BeBe and CeCe Winans have done. BeBe had a hand in writing each tune, with the exception of Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water." The interplay of the two voices is striking amid the marriage of popular music's production values and Christian-based lyrics. Additionally, this disc laid a foundation that ushered in a new phase of contemporary gospel, paving the way for solo careers and the likes of Kirk Franklin and Sounds of Blackness. Heaven features longtime compatriot Whitney Houston as guest vocalist (nearly a decade later, CeCe and her old pal would have a hit with their track on the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack), and the duo caught some flak when some folks thought their material wasn't Christian enough. --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars Unlike anything I've heard before.......2005-05-28

This is a groundbreaking album to me. I have never been much of a fan of Contemporary Christian/Christian Rock/Christian Pop music-I've always thought that it was too cheesy and I didn't find it to match its message. (I always found traditional Gospel to have a more holy sound personally-it was a sound that I could identify more with. That's not to say that Christian Rock and similar genres have something wrong with them.) In fact, some time ago I listened to a couple of the songs on this album and didn't care for it back then. But last fall, something compelled me to pick up my mom's copy of the cassette and give it another try. I'm not sure what the cause was, but I do believe that whatever it was was of Divine origin. I enjoy the "Heaven" album (and lots of other Gospel music) like I enjoy almost no other music. It simply is like nothing that I've really heard before.
The album is very pop-there isn't much in the way of choirs or organs like in traditional Gospel music. That could be part of why I like it so much. I've always loved the music of the 1980's that was a little off-beat, a little underground. On top of the synthesized sounds are touching lyrics, sensitive vocals, and a heartfelt message of Christian love and devotion.
The album spawned four singles-"Heaven," "Celebrate New Life," "Lost Without You," and "Meantime." The title track has a sort of an ethereal "quiet storm" sound, with an alternately major and minor key. "Heavenly" percussion and synthesizers permeate the song. "Celebrate New Life" features Whitney Houston strongly in the background, with everyone singing sounding like they're having a lot of fun. I always find the song to be very sunny and energizing. "Lost Without You" is a mid-tempo ballad featuring electric pianos and once again lots of synthesizers. It sounds like it could have easily been recorded by the likes of Atlantic Starr, but this has a more holy Gospel touch to it. "Meantime" is a gentle and longing ballad for the Afterlife, as BeBe soulfully sings that he'll "keep on loving" God his whole life through.
The rest of the album isn't any weaker than the singles. "You" is a taste of the New-Jack Swing music style that was becoming popular around the time this album was released (late 1988), and proclaims that God is the answer to all the trouble in life. "Hold Up The Light," with an explosive performance by Whitney Houston as well as BeBe and CeCe, is memorable also. "Trust Him" is a mid-tempo, uplifting song in the style of 1980's music-lots of percussion, synths, and good background vocals.
The album contains a quality that many albums and songs don't for me-the ability to make me want to cry. Therefore I don't listen to some of these songs nearly as much as I listen to the rest. Ironically, "Don't Cry" to me sounds heartbreaking, as does the cover of the Simon and Garfunkel classic "Bridge Over Troubled Water." The latter sounds like the duo are literally singing from Heaven, making for an ethereal experience. "Wanna Be More" is a piano-driven ballad written by BeBe that also has an uplifting message, but comes across as quite melancholy. I'm not taking away from these songs, but rather showing what an emotional impact they have.
Not everyone is going to like "Heaven"-in terms of Gospel music it's very non-traditional. But something about this album grabbed me (The Spirit of God?), and now I own almost all of BeBe and CeCe Winans' discography. I've always loved R&B music from the 1980's, and have been a Christian for a while now, and this is one of the first instances where the two matched greatly for me. (And that's not to say that the R&B music I listened to before I loved this album was dirty or sinful.) It's the dawning of a new love in my life and liking for music, and I'm sure that it will touch someone out there, too.

4 out of 5 stars Kirk Franklin wasn't the first!.......2003-03-21

It seems as though fans of urban contemporary gospel think that Mr. Franklin was the first to have success on both the gospel and pop charts. Back in the 60's and 70's, Edwin Hawkins and Andrae Crouch scored big with songs that appealed to a wide audience.

In the late 80's and early 90's no one was larger on the gospel charts than the Winans siblings. BeBe and CeCe's music was a blend of religious ambiguity that allowed it to be seen as both secular and sacred. Some may have had issues with that melding but it worked for the pair and brought them legions of fans.

1988's "Heaven" showcased the two with such memorable and inspiring tunes as the title cut, "Celebrate New Life", "Hold Up the Light" (with guest Whitney Houston)" and a jaw-dropping rendition of Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" that puts the original to shame.

This is one album that supplies enough spiritual "food" to satisfy any "hunger".

5 out of 5 stars Bebe and Cece's best work to date........2001-03-31

Although I am only 14 years old, this album, Heaven, has become one of my favorite cd's. My father bought this cd about 10 years ago and I have loved it since he first played it. If you want a gospel cd that is classic and inspirational, I reccomend this one.

4 out of 5 stars His presence is felt.......2001-01-01

I bought this CD a few weeks ago, after searching for the artists on the Amazon site over a period of time. I remembered the song "Heaven" from the '80's and I was tirsty for the richness of their voice and the feeling that song brought to me. I can not explain it in words the feeling I get when listening to them. This song brings a feeling of His power and of the ever lasting life, without all the attachments that other gospel songs have. For me, it works very well. Perhaps others who are very spiritual, may feel this is not really gospel. In any even, I love this CD and thank God for bringing us the brother and sister who created it. The only reason I did not give this a five star is the other songs are not quite the same as this, though they give us another Heaven at the end! Lots of love to you all!

5 out of 5 stars BeBe & CeCe's best.......1999-12-12

Nearly every song on the album is up to the same high standard set by the title track, "Heaven." The tunes are memorable, the instrumentals enhance the vocals rather than being barely-noticeable fillers, and the lyrics are a refreshing change from the hackneyed lyrics one often gets on Christian radio stations. As one of the other reviewers has said, this drew criticism from some, but anyone who listens carefully will see that the Christianity is there. It's subtle rather than in-your-face, and thus doesn't get tiresome. "Heaven" is an album that can and should be listened to over and over.

When Cooke left the Soul Stirrers for a pop career in 1957, Paul Foster tried to carry on alone but soon realized he was most effective as a foil to a high tenor. So he hired Kansas City's Johnnie Taylor, and the 19-year-old tenor soon assuaged the disappointment over Cooke's departure with a sweet tone that seemed to make the lyrics hum as he soared up and down through the octaves. The 24 tracks on this album, recorded from 1953 to '59, feature 10 Foster leads, nine Taylor leads, and five split leads. Only two of these takes have been previously released. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice album.......2002-07-02

To make things short, this cd has everything. I enjoyed Paul Fosters intense singing style. Considering what had to be done, Paul did a good job in the lead role. Although Sam Cooke was a great singer, it was the combination of Cooke and Paul Foster with the Soul Stirrers, that made everything so special.

4 out of 5 stars Post Sam cooke Stirrers still Stirring.......2001-09-11

Paul Foster carries them strongly on this CD. I do believe that Foster is better in a dual lead role, but to be honest I think that it is the dual lead role and the driving background that make the Soul Stirrers such a great group.

Foster is an able lead singer as is shown in Sinner Run to Jesus and In a Few More Days. Foster had an intense singing style that had a harder edge than Cooke, R. H. Harris, or Taylor. He was a perfect complement to them.

Johnny Taylor also comes in with some gems. Even though you can hear Cooke in the background of some of these tracks, the CD does show that the Soul Stirrers could create good music without Cooke or R. H. Harris...

5 out of 5 stars sensational music.......2000-07-06

WATCH OUT ! The "What the critics say" that appears in the editorial does not refer to this CD, but to a later, less successful one ! Dont be misled. I loved this Cd from the first hearing, and it even sounded better with time ! Little Johnny Taylor is the featured soloist. His voice is almost as smooth as Sam Cooke's, but to me it is deeper and more meaningful. The two takes of "out on a Hill" are definitely among the best Gospel Ballads ever recorded. "Heaven is my Home" is almost just as beautiful. I always loved Paul Foster's singing. He is the lead singer on a few tracks, of which "Golden Bells" is especially worth mentioning. I Heartily recommand this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Messiah with fervor!.......2005-10-20

I've hunted a thrilling performance of The Messiah through 240 versions so far. This is the best I've found. Some are self-conscious, dutifully singing as instructed. Some are almost childish in their lilt. Some are overblown with so much bombast that you can barely hear the heart of the music. Some are concentrated on faithfulness to the original instruments. If you want a performance that will make you shiver with the power and joy of the music, this is the one. The singers are singing about GLORY. They sound as if they are ecstatic. The musicians are at one with the music and they create a virtual cathedral wherever this CD is played, just close your eyes. Or, let your own imagery, be it celestial, or of great oceans...carry you away.

5 out of 5 stars Great recording!.......2003-09-22

There are so many performances of the Messiah out there that it is very difficult to point to a difinative one, but I'd put this in the catagory of the "very good" ones. As other reviewers have said, every performance is different and has its own character. Each has stronger and weaker points. Here the conductor and musicians have made good, solid musical choices. There is an amazing attention to detail which is not so obvious the first listen through but which makes the piece shine. The tempos seem to be right on, and there is no frivolous over-embellishment by the soloists. There is no attempt to be showey. The dramatic dynamics in the first section of the overture are interesting, but seem to work after you hear it a few times. This performance also includes sections which are often omitted (Second half of "He shall feed his flock," "Thou art gone up on high," "Great was the company of the preachers," and "Death where is thy sting"). I prefer the more intimate quality of a small ensemble of musicians to the mega-performances by the London Philharmonic, Vienna State Opera Orchestra, etc.. As with this performance, the smaller group lends a clarity to the music, where the larger ensembles can get a little "muddy" at times. Just my personal preference. Overall, this is a very good performance, and certainly the low price (being on the Naxos lable) makes this a clear choice.

2 out of 5 stars Good and Bad.......2000-04-09

I was more interested in "The Messiah" for the religious content than as a music critic, but this was too much. The strings are tinny. The orchestra is plodding. The soloists and choir are thankfully very good and seem to understand the meaning of the words. It is a shame the sound mix is uneven. The male parts come across loud and clear, but the poor women. For instance, No. 9 Oh thou that tellest..., the soloist sounded like she was singing in an echo chamber far from the mike. This is one of the most disappointing versions of "The Messiah" I have heard in a long time.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great recording!.......2000-02-11

I was really surprised with the new that the Messiah's New World premiere was held at Trinity Church in October 1770, twenty-eight years after it was written. This fact only will make one proud in having this CD among his collection.

Anyhow, this is nothing more than a historic detail and would not count if this recording had not an outstanding first-rate ensemble of singers. Without doubt there is no definitive version of Messiah. Each one has its own distinctive touch and feeling and exploring it is always a pleasant journey through imagination.

As stated by the conductor: "we must concede that performing Messiah with twenty singers and an appropriately balanced instrumental ensemble represents, at best, an imperfect comprimise", it will be easy to understand that this recording does not stand among the greatest and will probably carry some imperfections. I will mention two that kind of disppointed me a little bit. The Overture and the Chorus Worthy is the Lamb, for some reason misses the habitual vigor and strenght. Everything else is great and this is definitely a worth buying.

Once in a great while a singer comes along that moves your emotions with her songs. Her voice is dynamic and captivating.
She sings from her soul with a passion and conviction that is rare among performers these days. Erma does not need a thousand word review. One word is enough to rate her music. Magnificent!

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel and Blues Singers.......2000-05-13

An NPR recording introduced me to Irma Thomas. Once I knew of her, she kept reappearing in other contexts - a folk and blues anthology, with Marcia Ball and Tracy Nelson ... and, of course, on her own recordings. The range of her recordings and artists recording with her are a tribute to her musicianship.

Her gospel music on this album is consistently good and most of it is excellent esp. Hold to God's Unchanging Hand and Walk Around Heaven All Day. Her interpretation is both "traditional" and unique - you'll not mistake her for other greats such as Marion Williams or Mahilda Jackson ... but if you appreciate them you will enjoy Irma Thomas.

The Steeles are a Minneapolis quartet of two brothers (J.D. and Fred Steele) and two sisters (Jevetta Steele and Jearlyn Steele Battle) who got their start on gospel tours with Mahalia Jackson, the Staple Singers, and others, and made their reputation singing harmonies behind everyone from Kim Carnes to George Clinton. Fortunately, the Steeles stay closer to the gritty gospel-soul of the Staple Singers than to the lightweight pop-soul of the Winans on Heaven Help Us All. J.D. Steele wrote or co-wrote seven of the 10 cuts and produced or co-produced nine of them. He has a knack for coming up with songs like "Heart in My Hand," "Never Get Over You," and "I Don't Wanna Be Without U," which could be addressed either to God or a lover and have the melodic lilt and emotional thrust to work either way. The Prince contribution, "Well Done," is a funky sermon about doing rather than saying, and the title track is an a cappella version of Stevie Wonder's 1970 plea for divine help in troubled times. What really makes this album work, though, is the precision harmony singing, which is always pretty without ever becoming sappy. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Glad I got this album........2000-03-14

This CD contains two albums recorded by Big Maybelle on the Brunswick label back in the early 60's. One album was popular songs: What More Can a Woman Do?; I Can't Give You Anything But Love; Cry; Tortured; Candy; How Deep is the Ocean?; If; Why Was I Born?; I'll Close My Eyes; I Still Care; Everybody's Got a Home But Me; Cold, Cold Heart; and The Price You Have to Pay (Previously unreleased). The second album contained spirituals: Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot; Yes Indeed!; Old Time Religion; Every Time I Feel the Spirit; Joshua Fit the Battle of Jerico; When the Saints God Marching In; Do Lord; Down by the Riverside; Dry Bones; He's Got the Whole World in His Hands. With two albums on one CD, the price becomes very reasonable. The first thing I noticed the clean, clear sound and lack of background hiss. Obviously the remastering was done very carefully and thoughtfully. Big Maybelle's voice is slightly frayed, but still packs plenty of punch. The backup arrangements sound a little dated. But overall, if you are a Big Maybelle fan, I would put this CD in the "must have" category. I'm glad I got this CD. I really like it!
