5 out of 5 stars Brutal...Just Brutal!.......2007-07-02

If you're into death/metalcore than this is for you. Along with metal-like guitar riffs, these guys keep the breakdowns original with the off-time beats. There is no singing on the album which is good or bad, depending on the listner. The album is catchy never the less and I think if you're open to the bands that I've listed, then you should'nt hesitate to check them out. FOR FANS OF:Unearth, Parkway Drive, Through the Eyes of the Dead, Embrace the End, ect. They kind of have a sound of their own.

5 out of 5 stars this is what music is about.......2007-05-15

for those who say its brutal. your right. for those who say its un original ur right. but the fact of the matter is that abrb does it better than any who ever did it and does it. they annihlate any death core band today and any melodic death band from yesterday.

isnt that what music is about. progressing from ur predcessors.so leave them alone and enjoy. dont be jelouse that ur not as good. they are the future and soon we'll be bitchin about bands copying them.

2 out of 5 stars Unoriginal.......2007-05-14

I'm from North Carolina, the place where bands like Prayer for Cleansing and Undying opened the doors wide open for bands to mix of melodic death metal(At the Gates) and brutal hardcore(Hatebreed). This was back sometime around '98-'99. Since then I've heard litteraly hundreds of bands playing this hybrid style of music. More often than not the band is forgettable and soon breaks up without ever getting a chance to release anything more than an EP. To be honest I see this as a good thing. The less bands playing this style the better. Why do I say this? Because I'm tired of hearing the same thing played over and over and over and over.

As Blood Runs Black is no exception to this at all. At times these guys sound like At The Gates incarnate, at others a watered down version of the mighty Hatebreed. That being said I'm very confused as to what I'm listening to. One minute they're shredding your ears with some blistering metal, the next I'm hearing hardcore sing alongs and tough guy vocals right before, or during, a typical chugga chugga palm mute breakdown. Sure that's nothing new(except for the sing alongs which sound silly in the middle of a metal song and should be left to old school hardcore, but that's just my opinion), but while other bands tended to transition between the technical metal and big breakdowns seamlessly, ABRB seems to have issues with this. It seems like they're not sure if they want to be a metal band or a tough guy hardcore band which leaves the listeners very confused and frustrated.

Another huge downside to this disc is the over abundance of breakdowns. Every song has atleast one (some have two) huge breakdowns that just fall out of the sky. It's like they had this awesome song written and then said "hey we forgot to add a breakdown, lets just put on here" and bam there it is, for no reason. It didn't take long before I became so tired of hearing the breakdowns that I'd change the song once I heard it hit. While I'm a big fan of breakdowns and have definitely done my fair share of floor punching to them, I do have an issue with 1) too many on one CD, there really only needs to be one in just a couple songs on a disc and only if it fits the song. And 2) the fact that bands now days can't write anything more than "CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG" for breakdowns. Believe it or not there was a time where the "CHUG CHUG" was broken up by some form of filler instrumentation that kept things interesting.

Bottom line, these guys have talen, but they waste it because they're trying WAY WAY WAY too hard to cater to the 15 year old scene kid that things all this is is an excuse to go to a show and throw his fists around. There's no focus on writing a good solid song. There's no focus on trying to be different and stand out above the hundreds and hundreds of bands playing this exact same style of music. Until this band can realize that they're cheapning themselves by not having this focus, I'm going to have to pass this disc and this band by.

Seriously, if you want to buy a metalcore album worth listening to, anything by Prayer for Cleansing or Undying is where your money should go. They may not be around anymore, but atleast you're not gettng this garbage!

4 out of 5 stars Satisfying Yet Not Original.......2007-05-09

This band may not be breaking ground with their debut album, "Allegiance", but they satisfy the genre well. The music can easily be comparable to The Black Dahlia Murder, Light This City, and Darkest Hour, but it has its own moments that make it stand out as well. Drummer Leche is excellent when it comes to blastbeats, especially when it comes to tracks like "My Fears Have Become Phobias" and "Hester Prynne". The guitars are melodic and are played excellent, especially the solo in "My Fears Have Become Phobias". Also, you have your addition of breakdowns, which may not please some, but they are added well. Vocal range is great, very similar to BDM and Embrace The End.

My opinion? I recommend. It's a fun listen, even though it doesn't offer anything new to the genre. This band displays their talent well, and I'm looking forward to their future. Just don't slag them off as "another metalcore band" and things will be alright.

1 out of 5 stars It was better when it was called "At the Gates".......2007-04-13

What do we have here? Yet another "deathcore" band that steals riffs from At the Gates, adds blastbeats, and places "breakdowns" in the music. Are people getting tired of this genre yet? My advice is to listen to the Scandinavian Melodic Death Metal bands they are mimicking, and leave this unoriginal tripe to 15 year old scene kids.

It also saddens me to hear people are referring to this band as technical. Most of these riffs aren't hard to play if you know how to hammer on and pull off, and were in essence done over a decade ago by bands like At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity. If you want to hear some death metal that truly is complex, melodic, and intelligent, stick with Nile, Decapitated, Behemoth or Necrophagist.

I'm not denying this band has talent. They are just severely lacking in originality.

This is a great CD for any fan of the Boston Pops - especially those who have seen or been to their annual 4th of July performance - or for those who appreciate patriotic music. Many of the pieces they play at the Pops Goes the 4th concert are on the CD. My personal favorite is the 1812 Overture for its live cannons.

Album Description

Lizzie West and her songs are going places, have been places, and are here right now. "I Pledge Allegiance to Myself," the Brooklyn-based cross-country gypsy's first CD for Appleseed, recounts her latest adventures on what she calls "the holy road" - the open-minded path to experience, ideas, honesty, and living life in the moment.

Lizzie's debut CD, originally self-released and then reissued in slicked-up form by Warner Bros. as "Holy Road: Freedom Songs" three years ago, won her acclaim as "Breakout Artist of 2003" from AOL and Entertainment Weekly. Hits magazine called her "Marianne Faithfull, Grace Jones and PJ Harvey rolled into one." Her songs were featured on TV shows ("Everwood," "Dawson's Creek," Third Watch") and in movies ("Secretary," HBO's "Rock the Boat"). She was on the fast track to mass appeal. But ongoing disagreements with her label and the sudden loss of her parents to cancer made Lizzie realize it was time for a change.

Fans of Appleseed Recordings' dedication to artistic freedom and social justice through music, Lizzie and her musical collaborator, co-producer, and boyfriend, Anthony Kieraldo (a.k.a. The White Buffalo), brought Lizzie's new CD of 12 original songs and two cover versions to the independent label.

Recorded in New York, Nashville and Jamaica, "I Pledge Allegiance to Myself" is an intoxicating array of personal and philosophical experiences set to arrangements informed by folk, roots, hip-hop, reggae, gospel and contemporary Americana. One moment Lizzie is the playful, sexy seductress in the delightfully sunny reggae of "Rope Me In and Smoke Me," the next she's the jealousy-wracked accuser in "God Damn That Man." She issues her personal declaration of spiritual independence in the title track; in "Portrait of an Artist as a Young Woman (Thank You)," she gratefully thanks the life force within us all, then digs for hope beneath the pained life-during-wartime vignettes of "19 Miles to Baghdad." Although troubled love is a recurring theme, her unquenchable belief in self-determination resurfaces on many songs, including a haunted version of Bob Marley & the Wailers' "Get Up, Stand Up." The CD's other cover song is a bittersweet ride on Steve Goodman's classic "City of New ! Orleans," which becomes a bruised plea for unity in our fractured country.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Listen from Lizzie West.......2006-12-27

I was so excited to see a new release from Lizzie West. This is another great album. Holy Road is still my favorite, but this too is good! My favorite song is Rope Me in and Smoke Me, very sassy and seductive! This lady has a great voice. Her cover of City of New Orleans is quite good also.

5 out of 5 stars I heard it while flipping through stations.......2006-07-04

One morning as I was coming up with reasons not to get up yet (actually, it was a holiday), I heard an interview with Lizzie on the local Air AmeriKa station. Leaving aside that I heard the info on a purveyor of left-wing, fellow traveller, pablum, this woman has talent! Her songs sound great, and she has something to say, even if I personally don't quite agree with it. Definitely worth buying & a talent to watch.

Surprised that no one has reviewed this yet. Amazon.com doesn't give much info on this release, so I thought I'd rectify that. This is the second brand-new release on the "Mormon Tabernacle Choir" label, following their April 2003 release of "Consider the Lilies." Again, several of the arrangements are by Mack Wilberg, with direction by Craig Jessop and accompianment by the Orchestra at Temple Square. The track list is as follows:

The sound on this release is, if anything, even cleaner than the previous release, with the Choir and orchestra very evenly balanced. The programming includes a mix of both traditional and brand new songs, a couple of which (Stephen Paulus's "Hymn For America," and Charles Osgood's "The Pledge of Allegiance") were commissioned especially for this recording. Additional note: several of these songs were included on the Choir's 2003 Northeastern States tour, which was a huge success. I highly recommend this recording!

5 out of 5 stars I pledge Allegiance to Firewind.......2007-04-20

Allegiance is masterpiece of music and metal, seamlessly woven together in gigantic proportions.

Firewind has produced a classic album in the midst of a revival of metal. I'm a child of the 80's, when metal ruled the world. I have never been so excited as bands like Dream Evil, DragonForce, Hammerfall and more bring back metal to the forefront.

Firewind breathes some fresh air into the once dying beast of heavy metal. Crisp, clear and powerfully vibrant vocals, extremely intricate and heavy guitar work, bass guitars that won't stop all synchronized with awesome drumming(complete with double bass drums!)

At times the vocals sounds like a blend of anything Jorn Lande has done mixed with a touch of David Coverdale of Whitesnake fame. I just can't stop listening to the song called "Breaking the Silence"!

If you love metal, old or new, this is a must have for any true metalhead.

5 out of 5 stars This is real metal.......2007-04-12

This album grabs you by the throat and won't let go. Start to finish. Not one bad song. The guitar is blazing, the vocals are excellent. No sappy power metal here, this is the real McCoy. No growling, no screaming. Just good metal, good songs, great guitar. If I had to make one criticism, it would be the structure of a few songs. The choruses sound a little strange in the midst of the rest of the song. But, all in all I can't think of any band that's kicking it today like these guys do. Definitely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Metal at its finest! Ungodly killer riffs and in your face vocals!.......2007-03-18

'Firewind' is one of those great power-metal bands that come along once in a while! It is even more surprising that they are from Greece, not exactly a hotbed for known international metal bands. I've been to Greece many times though, and surely the picturesque and idyllic vistas and majestic landscape must have been an inspiration to 'Firewind', given their masterful and progressive songwriting skills so evident on this phenomenal release. The songs are a bit evocative of Dio, Whitesnake, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Queensryche, Dream Theater, Malmsteen, etc, but with total originality and sound that only 'Firewind' can bring to the table. The playing and musicianship is clockwork and precise, with some ungodly bombastic riffing and articulate and emotional world class soloing work from 'Gus G.', their guitarist extraordinaire! All in all, a GREAT metal release that is right 'up there' with the best hard rock/metal bands in existence. Highly HIGHLY recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars Gus G is a guitar god!!!.......2007-01-30

Incredible album, and even more incredible the musicianship here. Everything here is superb, guitars, keyboards, voice, drums and bass, perfect melodic metal. I'm a Gus G fan and in my opinion in this album really improves it, the solos with a very melodic parts are unique!!! Recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars axemaster Gus rocks your face off.......2007-01-27

If you are into anyone from Malmsteen to Narnia to Dragonforce you need to check out this album. Fast tempoed melodic metal master finds another great vox to front his geetar skills and turns out another great power metal album. I love all their stuff and this quickly moved into second place behind the first album. The production is thick, and very layered. This is killer, riff heavy, anthemic metal. If metal is really coming back then then these boys will help lead the charge. No kid metal here.

5 out of 5 stars One of his Best!.......2005-02-16

I've had this CD since the day it was released in 1992 and still, to this day, it is one of my favorites and never far from the CD player. This is a CD that you can play straight through because there are no bad songs on it. Every song on this CD sounds sincere and feels like it's coming straight from his heart. When he sings "Can't we try again" you feel like he really means it.

4 out of 5 stars One of Howard's most consistent albums........2003-10-26

This was Howard's second most consistent album (after his 1986 debut "I Commit To Love"). I especially like the songs produced by Narada Michael Walden and Nick Martinelli. The album's best song was undoubtedly the breathtakingly beautiful Walden-produced ballad "Can We Try Again?" which deserved to have been a huge hit (but it wasn't).

5 out of 5 stars Out of this world DEATH METAL!.......2007-04-29

I listened to the band 13 years ago and forgot about them... until the last album "Midviterblot." Then I got "Sworn Allegiance."

Absolutely phenomenal. All DEATH METAL fans are sick of crappy, noise machines claiming to be death metal bands. This is different. Big time!

ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL MUSIC! If Death Metal started with this it could have been mainstream by now. The instrumentalism is unsurpassed. UNLEASHED is the only band which somehow magically manages to combine DEATH (speed and precision) and OBITUARY (heaviness and raunchiness in melody).
      Hats off!
      Hats off!

I'm in my 30's and loving the UNLEASHED music.

      5 out of 5 stars Very good!!.......2006-01-17

From the cult band Nihilist, there comes Unleashed, along with Entombed were the founder fathers of the swedish death metal scene. My favorite of those two is Unleashed. Their music sounds like raw, primitive and interesting. The vocals from Johnny fits very well. The guitars are good also, with a couple great riffs and the drums are tight. The influence of this band in the death metal scene is uncompromasing!!!

4 out of 5 stars Unleashed is back!!!.......2005-05-09

After their lackluster release of "Hell's Unleashed", this band is doing what they should've done a llllooonnngggg time ago, which was ditch the whole "death-n-roll" thing and go back to the more Nihilist-esque sounding stuff they did in "Where No Life Dwells" and "Shadows In The Deep" (both excellent albums by the way).

Well, these guys have almost completely gone back to their faster, more aggressive past, even having blastbeats on 2 tracks. The opening track "Winterland" was a great opening track, "Destruction (Of The Race Of Men)" was a cool song as well. Other good songs were the mid-paced tracks "The Long-ships Are Coming" and the shred-fest of "Praised Be The Lord". This record has very good production quality as well.

The reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is because first of all, half of the lyrics are annoyingly stupid (such as "Only The Dead", "One Night In Nazareth", and "Metalheads"), secondly, those 3 songs I mentioned in the parenthesis are really lame as well. Either way, the good really out-weighs the bad here, so this alum is worth a listen from you.

5 out of 5 stars This is great metal!.......2005-01-18

      Unleashed - Sworn Allegiance

If you like death metal at all, even just a couple of bands, I think you should check this one out, because it's excellent. I stumbled across this one and on first listen I thought it was great, it makes an immediate impact on you, and now I hear that this isn't even supposed to be Unleashed's best CD. The first track, Winterland, is one of the highlights, the riff and lyrics have a black metal feel to them, ala Satyricon or Immortal. If you've seen the Lord of the Rings movies, as most of us have, you'll be familiar with the lyrics in Destruction (Of the Race of Men), it quotes some of the lines from the books and film, it's a great death metal song too with a good guitar solo.

Fans of Cannibal Corpse will be right at home with track three, Only The Dead, which has some gory lyrics. The difference is that you can actually understand them here, unlike the guttural growls of Chris Barnes or George Fisher. The song isn't as good as the opening two tracks though. The tracks on this album are very consistent, it's one that you want to put on again once you've finished listening to it. I Bring You Death is one of the best tracks, with a catchy riff and chorus, while One Night in Nazareth is one of my personal favourites, with some [...] lyrics about...I'll let you listen to it. The chorus is catchy and it's the track that will get in your head above all the rest if you listen to this all the way through.

Metalheads has lyrics that are different to any of the other songs, "Come on bang your heads, true metalheads!", and it's a great song to bang your head to. I don't consider myself a big fan of death metal but I loved this, so if you just like a bit of metal try this one out. There are some great solos throughout, it's heavy, and some of the songs are even catchy.

Stand-outs: Winterland, I Bring You Death, One Night in Nazareth

      5 out of 5 stars outstanding!!!.......2004-12-22

If you love Swedish death metal like I do, chances are you already know about these guys. They pretty much define it and have done so for over a decade. This album outdoes their last one by leaps and bounds. Better songs, more songs, more of what I like about these guys. Chugging guitars, haunting solos, and ass kicking lyrics with attitude. A must have for death metal fans, no doubt about it.
