Moving, intense music........2006-04-30
I've had this album for a little over a year now and still listen to it regularly. It's a favorite in my car, especially in the early morning while driving my kids to school. The combination of the sunrise and the moving vocals combine to leave me feeling full of life, ready to move on with my day. The chorus is truly incredible, and with a decent sound system the feeling of being in the midst of all those deep voices is something memorable.
I love the sound and style of Russian music, and this CD has been wonderful when I'm in the mood for something more meaningful.
I'm not a music expert or Russian linguist, nor will you find me in a church on Sunday. I enjoy good music of all forms, and no matter what your religion or linguistic affiliation, this is excellent music that is sure to add something to your collection.
peaceful moment to soothe you and draw you closer to Him........2001-08-03
The themes and songs remind me of an ancient Russia when the Church is at peak and predominantly practiced at the whole of Russia.Just imagine yourself in one of those great cathedral with the choir singing and the priest celebrating the mass. The song that echoed in the great cathedral wall will surely put ones to heavenly realm,a sense of calm and joy one will always remember....
Aural Delight.......2001-02-06
Of all the music I own this cd is my favorite at this time. This group has a very rich and powerful sound. When I buy choral music this represents exactly what I am looking for. If you are like me you bought a Gregorian Chant cd and were disappointed becuse it is in unison and rather flat sounding: this is harmonious and lush. Each track is four part a capella. I cannot adequately express the pleasure I receive from this cd. I am not an audiophile or vocal technique expert but I know good music when I hear it; this certainly qualifies. The group has a very good blend and sings what seem to be difficult pieces very smoothly. I would describe the mood as invigoratingly soothing. If you like all-male choral works you will enjoy this. I will certainly be purchasing more work by this group in the future.
Excellent Russian Music.......2000-10-04
This is an excellent performance and resource. These days, it can seem that nothing less than an authentic performance will do, whether that necessitates playing Bach on 300 year old violins or Liszt being played by a full-blooded Hungarian. And with the amount of recordings becoming available from countries with few previous U. S. releases, it can seem that only a Russian ensemble can truly perform Russian music. Slavyanka's CD proves that philosophy to be false: an American choir can deliver an excellent account of Russian choral music.
I'm not sure if this is professional, semi-professional, or a group that meets weekly, but the results are quite good. Recording quality here is generally good and the choir has the requisite low bass section (the first track will let you know that). There are times when intonation and ensemble seem to slip away slightly, which keeps this recording from cracking the upper echelon. Some of the soloists seem uncertain at times, as well.
The inclusion of texts in Cyrillic letters, transliterated Russian, and English is an excellent addition that I wish CDs used more often. The texts make it easier to understand the message and to learn about the Russian language (definitely not the easiet language in which to sing). In fact, the CD booklet is so big that it scarcely fits into the jewel box.
I enjoy having this CD in my library and I would encourage those interested in choral music, Russian music, or even those learning Russian to buy it. I can't think of a better way to learn about a language and a culture.
Slavyanka: Small Chorus - Large Sound.......2000-03-29
Slavyanka Men's Chorus has the ability, through magnificent dynamic contrasts, to sound small and intimate, but can sound large as a Russian theological academy chorus. Their work on this disc is impeccable. The accompanying booklet of program notes is superior, and is in multiple languages. The inclusion of the text of the liturgical music in several languages, including Slavonic and transliterated English pronunciation of the Slavonic, is a wonderful addition. Can't recommend it highly enough!

One of the 2 first excellant Mother Earth albums.......2007-01-05
My personal favorite on this album is "You Win Again," and she can still sing like that. This is full of good ones, besides that. Just slightly not as great as the first one by them, but it's close enough to be called great.
Definitley a Desert Island Disc.......2004-12-14
Although hard to believe, this follow-up may even be better than Living With The Animals -- the groups first release. If I am not mistaken, the group had moved to Tenn from Calif before producing this masterpiece. Although the country influence is clearly present, the recording still rocks out with some very bluesy and soulful cuts...and then there is "The Fly" by R.P. Saint John, which is hard to describe, but accomplishes to convey a netherworld experience within the context of a pop song, and in the process rises to a genuine level of poetic art. Of course Tracy Nelson's singing is as good as ever, and the song selection and ordering on this release form a progression of song types that work together to produce an emotionally satisfying listening experience. Great to see this release now available on CD.

Very Pretty.......2006-10-12
Nice collection of very pretty songs of praise to the Almighty YHWH GOD and our Lord, Jesus Christ. Simple songs, beautifully displayed and sung.
It grows on you.......2005-04-25
I'd like to echo what Mr. Cole wrote 6 years ago: the apparent youth of the singers is a benefit. This CD grows on you. It has staying power, variety, honesty, vigor... and sopranos that excel. Listen to what offsetting effect they have against the young basses on track 2, Chesterfield. Or the seductive tracks 5 and 13.
The choir members are now pushing 50 years old. I would like to thank them for the pleasure and joyous renewal that they give so many years after these performances.
American and English Psalmody.......2003-01-24
The music of American psalmodists such as Billings and Belcher, while it does represent some of the great achievements of the psalmody tradition, is not the whole of this tradition. The fuging tune and related music (anthems etc.) stem originally from English psalmody (the "West Gallery tradition"), the works of men such as William Tans'ur and Aaron Williams. They, their music and the people who sang it in England, as in the US, were very much not of the elite: they were of "the folk", hence their folk music. Pieces by Tans'ur can be found, for those who are interested, in US psalmodies still in print, such as "Harmonia Sacra"
A good introduction to some little-known music.......1999-03-09
I first heard this recording on an old scratchy LP in a college course on American music. Like most people, I was ignorant of the existence of 'fuging tunes', which are an odd and uniquely American blend of baroque counterpoint and homespun harmonies. This extended polyphony is often tacked onto the end of the homophonic chorales or hymns which constitute the standard fare of modern American Protestant church services (and are often boring and bland by comparison, in my opinion). What was in Europe a past-time for the elite became music for the masses in the New World: These tunes were sung not by choirs but by congregations, and proliferated in folk tunebooks such as the 'Southern Harmony', which still survives today.
The performance by the Oregon State group is youthful and exuberant... Overall intonation and clarity are excellent, while vocal technique is somewhat unrefined (this is actually appropriate, given the origins of this music). If you've never experienced early American vocal music, you will be surprised and pleased with this recording.

Borders on show tunes.......2005-02-09
The audio quality is great, as is most often the case with Reference Recordings. However, there are far better chorales and compositions than represented on this cd. The content strikes me as saccharine. We're not allowed to mention other recordings in reviews, but I put one idea of some good choral music (chorale la) in the recommended instead section.
Adrenaline and tears this CD fills the soul. a GEM.......1999-10-28
I really like heoric choral/organ/orchestra music. But this is the ONE disc that I think everyone should experience. I recently played this disc at a HiFi Event in Norway. About half the listeners clamored for info on where to buy it. This one is magic, trust me.

Album Description
Recording of twentieth-century American psalm settings features many recorded premieres, including works by Hovhaness, Nelson, Adler, and Hanson. Other composers included are Ives, Starer, Thompson, and Pinkham. This album was recorded in the splendid setting of Methuen Memorial Music Hall with its marvelous organ and acoustics. |
Gloriæ Dei Cantores has a mission to preserve and perform the finest sacred music. From its beginnings, the choir has also felt a special mission and an affinity for American music. There is a rich bounty of great American music that is rarely heard, and for that reason, Gloriæ Dei has now embarked on a series of recordings of American psalm settings.
Customer Reviews:
A remarkable compilation of 20th century American psalmody........2004-05-19
Elizabeth C. Patterson and her Gloriae Dei Cantores (Singers to the Glory of God) chorus had been total unknowns to me prior to about a year ago. The group had been brought to my attention then by Mark O'Connor's publicist, at which time he had been the guest artist on their "Appalachian Sketches" album. But that album, excellent as it was, turned out to be just the small tip of a significant iceberg in terms of choral singing, and particularly the American traditions of sacred choral singing over the last half-millennium.
I've since collected quite a few of their albums, and, to switch metaphors, this "Make His Praise Glorious" album may turn out to be the mother lode. Actually a religious choral community based on Cape Cod, MA, Gloriae Dei Cantores members have literally dedicated their lives to this music genre. In addition to recording at their "home base," they have also recorded frequently in Mechanics Hall, Worcester, MA and at Methuen Memorial Hall, Methuen, MA (where this particular recording was made). (For those who aren't familiar with the organ tradition in America, Methuen Memorial Hall is where the original organ in Boston's Symphony Hall found its "final resting place" after the formation of the Boston Symphony Orchestra rendered it redundant. Fully restored, reconstructed and revoiced in 1947, this organ is one of the finest historical organs in the U.S., and its permanent home-Methuen Memorial Hall-was built specifically for its properties, and for its perpetual preservation as well.)
The music on this album is as wide a variety of settings of the Psalms by 20th century American composers as one could ask for, covering a variety of liturgical points of view. Samuel Adler and Robert Starer (both Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria respectively who settled in the U.S and built significant careers in music afterwards) take their own individualistic approaches to their choices of psalms. Adler's, in English, is heroic, resplendent with two trumpets supporting the chorus. Starer's, in Hebrew, with piano accompaniment, are more reflective and smaller in scale, but equally well-done.
Alan Hovhaness's "Make a Joyful Noise" is a cantata in four parts based on Psalms 54, 55 and 66. Like much of Hovhaness's music, with its reflection of his Armenian roots, "Make a Joyful Noise" is otherworldly; simply a beautiful piece of writing. The opening Prelude is for trombone solo and organ; quite a piece by itself. The remaining three parts are the actual psalms; all three of them have the Methuen organ supporting the chorus and the second and fourth parts in addition have a brass quartet of two trumpets and two trombones. A joyful noise indeed!
There are four brief a capella motets set to psalms by David Pinkham, and excellent sacred choral works by Ronald A. Nelson, Howard Hanson and Randall Thompson. Thompson's setting of Psalm 23 ("The Lord is My Shepherd") is particularly beautiful, with the chorus accompanied by harp. (The booklet notes point out that Thompson set this for chorus plus optional organ, piano or harp. I believe that Elizabeth Patterson made a very wise choice in the harp option; it fits the music perfectly.)
All of the works already described were written in the middle third of the 20th century. All are readily accessible, and none could truly be called "modern." That description best fits the remaining work on the album,Charles Ives's setting of Psalm 90. Originally written in 1894, and possibly performed a few years later, when Ives was organist at the Central Presbyterian Church in New York, the work was then lost, and then reconstructed by Ives in 1923, partially from sketches he had preserved but largely from memory. (Ives had a prodigious memory, apparently, and could reconstruct works decades after they had been lost or abandoned.) Its first true public performance didn't take place until 1966,when the Gregg Smith Singers presented the official premiere. (The Robert Shaw Chorale then performed it the following year.)
This remarkable work is full of many Ives compositional touchstones, made famous in his later works, that belie its original date of composition. Written for chorus, organ and bells, it is in every sense a visionary work, full of unusual harmonies, stacked chords, harmonic ambiguities, and even tone clusters, and, as well, transcendent atmosphere (provided by the bells). Yet, despite this fearsome description of its constituents, the work is fresh and accessible, and, like the very best of Ives, very moving. In a phrase, it is an eleven-minute masterpiece, and easily the shining star of this album. And to think that it is the oldest work on the album, and by so many years!
Gloriae Dei Cantores do a splendid job with this difficult work, and this performance easily suffices as the best example of an Ives psalm in the absence of a remastering of the Gregg Smith Singers LPs that had so many good Ives choral works on them. Better yet, other albums by Gloriae Dei Cantores have additional Ives psalms on them.
As I finish writing these thoughts, we are less than 24 hours away from official observance of the 50th year since Ives's passing. A fitting tribute, I'd like to think.

Russian Christmas.......2007-03-08
It is very important for me because it is very difficult to found russian Christmas records. I would like to get Southamerican Christmas.
AWESOME CD!.......2002-10-19
This CD is very good, and is one of the best Russian CD's I could find in America. The singers are very clear, and give you a feeling of the Russian Christmas season, with a wide variety of tunes. Growing up in Russia, this CD provides me with the comfort of the Christmas season I was brought up with...and I recommend this CD everyone. One downfall however is that the tracks and songs are sung is Russian...this was not a major point for me, since Russian is my first langauge, but for anyone who cannot understand the language....this entire CD is NOT in English, and if that bothers you, I recommend that you find a CD that has translations for you to follow, since this cd does not provide them, and you will have no idea what the songs are about.
Wonderful, but..........2002-01-15
I have purchased this CD after encountering some of Korniev's other work with the St Petersburg Chamber Choir, and the quality of the singing (as well as the music) does not disappoint. The choir has a beautiful (rather misty) focus, soaring sopranos and basses to give any subwoofer a serious workout.
The anthology is interestingly chosen, containing better and lesser-known composers.
My only gripe is with the packaging: no texts or translations are supplied, not even English titles for the tracks. One therefore has not the faintest idea what the choir is singing (or what they're singing about). For that I subtract one star. Shame on you Philips!

What? I'm the first to review this?.......2006-02-21
How can brass Christmas music get any better that this? The musicianship is second-to-none and the arrangements are lively, intricate, and interesting to listen to over and over again. Yet, they still retain that traditional sound without sounding experimental or cute. I don't even like brass music so much but I love this recording.
Just put this through your headphones and be instantly transported to a another place and time. Perhaps the business district of a small town in England or the Eastern US in the 19th century. Snow covers ground and is still falling, but there's no wind at all. Folks are bundled up milling about doing their last-minute Christmas preparations, and they've all got smiling faces and are greeting each other. A brass band is playing on the street corner. You see a big Christmas turkey in a store window and you ask the shopkeeper how much is costs. "A pittance!" you think! You buy that turkey and throw a feast for all the children in the orphanage!
Anyway, it's a great CD and I still can't believe I'm writing the first review.
