Television Meets Psych Rock Meets Spaghetti Western.......2007-06-19
Each of the Paisley Underground bands seemed to have their own little slant on the sounds of the movement, which was about bringing guitar-driven, psychedelic music back to the fore in the synth-heavy 80s. True West's bent was a little hard to figure. There were the duelling guitar wizards, Tolman and McGrath, who sounded more like Verlaine and Lloyd than any 1960s guitarists. There was the feeling of the old West, not just in the band's name but in their sound and feel - something that put you in mind of tan chinos, shoe boots with spurs, shots of rye at the local saloon, and lots of dirt. Then there was the psychedelic thing - the cover of Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam," the sometimes trippy lyrics, the spiralling guitar lines . . . In the liner notes to this compilation of True West's best material, it is suggested that they hit their peak on the full-length album, Drifters. But that album, despite its excellent opening track, "Look Around," pales in comparison to the EP, Hollywood Holiday. The eight songs on the EP represented all of the best elements of True West - the songs seem fresh, they keep you guessing what might come next, each one has its own little angle on the whole picture the band was presenting then. The album, meanwhile, gets tired after the third or fourth track, and feels like a labor from there. And the three tracks produced by Tom Verlaine thrown on at the end are notweworthy for historical reference, but otherwise pretty unremarkable. If you were into the Paisley Underground thing when it was happening, or if you just like guitar-heavy psychedelic rock, you will absolutely want to pick up this CD. Just be prepared to hear a combination of inspired gems and sludge.
Making The World Safe For Guitars.......2007-06-15
Back in the early-mid '80s, there was talk that the electric guitar was going to go the way of the dinosaur and the dodo bird to replaced by keyboards, computers and things. Bands like True West took a stand and helped save the six-string from the onslaught of the MIDI monster. The dueling guitar duo of Richard McGrath and Russ Tolman was on par with Television's Verlaine and Lloyd, in fact Tom Verlaine was so impressed with True West that he produced three tracks, which are luckily included as bonus tracks on this two-for reissue of the band's first two albums: Hollywood Holiday and Drifters. Drawing inspiration from Syd Barrett era Floyd, 40s film noir, the Beck and Page era Yardbirds, late night 80s cable TV, the San Francisco Sound, and the Mercury space program, True West created a couple classic albums that sound fresh and vital today.
Great 80's psychedelic.......2007-06-11
I own both the original EP and LP on vinyl, the EP is more feedback laden, the LP was, I don't know, more laid back, but w/good dual guitar songs. Both EP and LP appear to be on this CD, so enjoy!

Album Description
Already heralded as "a monumental achievement in contemporary jazz," Steve Khan's "THE GREEN FIELD" is the realization of the guitarist's unique musical vision. John Patitucci, Jack DeJohnette, and Manolo Badrena return to form the core group, and the 18-minute title track may well be Khan's most important work to date.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful gem from a true modern master.......2007-02-02
Steve Kahn has been producing terrific music for decades as both a sideman and a leader. His early work with the Brecker Brothers, his lynch-pin playing on Steely Dan's "Gaucho", and his pre-Eyewitness sessions all raised the bar of what an innovative, professional guiatrist/musician/composer should be. His influnce on current jazz guitar is profound if unrecognized. Kahn's Eyewitness work through to this amazing recording (The Green Field) shows his continued progress. He taps into all he's done and elevated it into a unique and coherent masterpiece.
Kahn has always chosen the best of the best to support him, with an almost clairvoyent knowledge of bringing in the perfect artists for the project at hand. The Green Field is no exception - Patitucci and DeJonette work wonders with Kahn's compositions. Their individual voices never overpower the peices but bring out the emotional core of them. As Dennis Chambers and Anthony Jackson did on Crossings and Al Foster and Ron Carter did on Headline - both highly recommended - Patitucci and DeJonette allow each piece to unfold and take flight. Really something!
Kahn the guitarist is again in top form. His beautiful chord work and warm tones are rich and comforting with an edge of urgency and humor. His weaving solo lines walk you through the landscapes of each piece, tranporting you into the "paintings" and make listening a rare individualized experience.
I hope the time will come when Steve Kahn recieves the attention and recognition he so deserves, but I'm very grateful that this hasn't kept him from producing some of the worlds best music of the past 20 years.
Other essential Kahn titles:
Headline, Crossings, Public Access, Casa Loco, New Horizons (w/ Caribbean Jazz Project).
Serendipity.......2006-08-17
How great is Steve Khan?
Very great, if The Green Fields is any indication.
This is a masterful disc. Sometimes these things just happen: right company (that is, personnel and disc purveyor), stars aligned, whatever. Everything works optimally here. Patitucci and DeJohnette seem the perfect dialogic partners. I think it helps that they're sidemen, not leaders. Their recent sessions as leaders (e.g., The Elephant Sleeps but Still Remembers [DeJohnette] and Songs, Stories & Spirituals [Patitucci]) strike me as slightly indulgent, but their work here is beyond criticism.
Kahn hasn't always found the right context to ultimately present his huge chops and unique vision. For example, his work with Rob Mounsey seems too New Age-y and precious. That's not a problem here. What we've got is relaxed rigor: killer grooves combined with vast rhythmic exploration and dancing melodicism.
Music of the highest possible accomplishment. Highly recommended.
Steve's best album to date.......2006-08-05
After the release of GOT MY MENTAL one of the most original and creative Jazz-Guitarists of our time presents his new album in almost the same line-up. As early as in 1981 Khan issued one of the outstanding recordings in modern jazz, EYEWITNESS, presenting melodical and rhythmical concepts that were unheard until then, by adding an percussionist with equal rights to the classic jazz-guitar-trio-concept. Steve Khan has taken this concept to an even higher level in THE GREEN FIELD with Jack DeJohnette (dr), John Pattitucci (acoustic bass) and Manolo Badrena (perc). Khan's unique guitar voicings and soloing style show influences of Wayne Shorter and Larry Young as well as McCoy Tyner. Original tunes as "El Vinon", "Fist In Glove" and "The Green Field" do offer references to Elvin Jones, Wes Montgomery or Larry Young but are presented with a fresh approach that is leading beyond modern guitar-trio-jazz. With the help of guests appearances of additional percussionist Ralph Irrizary and Robert Quintero standards as "Nefertiti" or "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" both turn into modern cha-cha-arrangements symbolising the marriage of Jazz and Latin Percussion into music of its own rights on the highest possible level without compromising on artistic value. My personal highlights include the title track and "Cosecha Lo Que Has Sembrado" which was dedicated to Tito Puente, giving each percussionist plenty of room for tremendous solo performances. From my point of view, THE GREEN FIELD is Steve Khan's best album to date.
Jack DeJohnette is GOD!!!.......2006-06-15
Jack DeJohnette is my favorite drummer. I also love the way John Pattitucci plays, and Manolo Badrena is awesome. What I've heard of this album sounds cool, but nowhere near as hip as Steve Khan's album 'Public Access' with Anthony Jackson, Dave Weckl and Manolo Badrena. I don't know why Manolo Badrena doesn't have more of a solo career, he an amazing musician playing percussion and singing. Steve Khan sounds great, but I wish he would put out more albums with less straight ahead stuff. I was disappointed with the version of 'Riot', it's so much heavier on the Miles recording (was it Nefertitti or Sorcerer?). I don't know why people insist on performing the music of Miles Davis in a way that lacks the fire and intensity of the original recordings.
genius again.......2006-03-01
Steve did it again. This is a spectacular cd all around. His choice of performers could not be better and it is obvious while listening that they were 'on the same note'--in agreement as to where the music should go. I will be enjoying this music for years to come. Thanks Steve!

Displaying an amazingly diverse vocal talent, Steve Green's 24th recording mixes guitar-driven pop, Gregorian chants, symphonic ballads, and Appalachian bluegrass with equal aplomb. The plentiful highlights include Green's gritty performance on "If We Answer," recorded with Out of the Grey's Scott and Christine Dente. Green gets more organic with the Celtic-tinged "Sacrifice of Praise" and the folkloric "O Pilgrim Come," the latter from the top-selling O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack. He changes gears once again on "Non Nobis Domine," the big-production chant taken from the Henry V soundtrack. Green seems to revel in Woven in Time's rich sampling of different styles as he takes the listener on a joyful ride. --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring Christian devotionals.......2005-09-25
I'm not really familiar with Contemporary Christian as I think this genre is called, but Woven In Time is a most enjoyable work. The first three songs are all slow ballads: Pleasures Of The King has prominent guitars and strings, Thread Of Scarlet classical guitar and strings and God Of Wonders lovely keyboard flourishes.
The tempo picks up for the structurally complex rock ballad If We Answer with its moving lyrics, whilst I Will Go is more like a traditional hymn and Sacrifice Of Praise has a Celtic flavour with exotic instruments like bouzouki, penny whistle and Uillean pipes. This one has a very immediate melody and the most ecstatic feel. Green's voice really soars here, this is definitely my favourite on the album!
There is a soulful feel to Grace And Nothing More with its gospel vocals framed by organ touches. From gospel to country with Oh Pilgrim Come that is embellished with dobro, fiddle and mandolin. Another tuneful number in a pop vein is titled Whatever It Takes, and the album concludes with his rendition of Non Nobis Domine (Psalm 115:1).
There is an impressive variety of styles on display, the music is tuneful and the lyrics poetic. The songs I enjoy most include Pleasures Of The King, Sacrifice Of Praise, Oh Pilgrim Come and Whatever It Takes. Woven In time is a most inspiring album of devotional music. At times it reminds me of The Waterboys, at other moments a little bit of Van Morrison. The CD booklet contains all the lyrics and quotes from CS Lewis, John Piper and Ravi Zacharias.
songs of praise, voice of gold.......2003-12-20
With a golden voice and exquisite artistry, Steve Green has given the world a masterful collection of songs with this CD; it is one of the best contemporary Christian music albums I have heard, with lovely melodies and uplifting lyrics.
Steve co-wrote "I Will Go", and the tender "Holding Hands", about God's daily grace in a good marriage; all eleven songs are strong, with my favorite being "Thread of Scarlet", written by Wes King, who plays classical guitar in the first version on track # 2, and it is given a fuller treatment in the short reprise on track # 11.
Overall, the songs are serene and soft ballads, with the exception of the upbeat "If We Answer", the gospel flavored "Grace and Nothing More" which builds to a mighty conclusion, and the traditional "Non Nobis Nomine", where Steve unleashes the power and range of his voice. The arrangements and musicianship are excellent throughout, and the booklet insert contains all the lyrics. Total time is 48'28.
With his beautiful voice and good looks, Steve could have been a pop icon, but chose to use his talents as a ministry instead, and in his prolific recording career (in Spanish as well as English) of nearly 20 years, this CD released in 2002 is a treasure, and is sure to fill your heart and bless your soul.
Beautiful Music 'Woven' in an Album.......2002-12-31
This is a good album by my favorite Christian vocalist, Steve Green, who uses his God-given voice to glorify God through music. I appreciate this CD not only for the quality of music but also the lyrics that minister spiritually to the heart.
Prevalent themes throughout this CD communicate the greatness of the "God of Wonders," His sovereignty, and our submission to Him. My favorite songs include "If We Answer," "I Will Go," "Sacrifice of Praise," and "Non Nobis Domine" which means "Not Unto Us, O Lord" (But to Your name may all the glory be).
A new clasic.......2002-07-30
As usual, he has created another clasic. It is the best CD he has put out in recent years. The words to his songs are profound and express what many chistians have experienced. Only the truly committed could sing some of these songs. Worth every penny.

Steve Green Review.......2007-01-15
This CD by Steve Green is excellent. I believe he has one of the best voices in Christian music. It is very inspirational and his whole message is loving the Lord. You can't go wrong purchasing this CD.
This Is A Christian Greatest Hits Collection...........2005-12-22
After ten years of ministry and nine contemporary CD releases, Sparrow released Steve Green's 'greatest hits' or most popular songs, if you will. The 'favorites' of Steve Green fans are here along with three new releases sure to excite fans who have never heard Steve sing them live in concert.
"People Need The Lord" is a recognizable song from the early 1980s that closed out his first album. It is weak as an opening song, but certainly one of his best-known songs. Green proceeds with "God And God Alone," the title of his most reverent CD. Other popular songs include "Broken And Spilled Out," "He Holds The Keys," and "Calvary's Love."
The new songs, however, are the highlight of the recording. Green gives a passable performance of Keith Green's (no relation) "Grace By Which I Stand" that is updated for contemporary style. It also contains a popular concert song, "A Mighty Fortress," that can be found on the 1986 cantata-style CD of the same name. Green performs a 'Cross Medley' that is a combination of "Hallelujah! What A Savior," "When I Survey," and "Amazing Love."
The CD ends with the apex of the 1993 CCM performed "Young Messiah," a contemporary version of Handel's "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth." The CD ends much like a Green concert and you leave the recording feeling blessed.
This is must have if you want a 'best of' that doesn't require a lot of dollars like buying all the old recordings does.
Excellent CD!.......2004-04-08
People Need the Lord is a collection of 16 of the best songs in Steve Green's first 10 years of ministry.
The songs are mainly oriented towards burdening Christians for people who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, other songs encourage the listener to reflect on the awesomeness of God.
Among my personal favorites are: People Need the Lord, God and God Alone, Broken and Spilled Out, He Holds the Keys, A Mighty Fortress, and I Know That My Redeemer Liveth. However, the other songs are fine also.
Highly recommended, I encourage readers to buy and enjoy for God's glory!
Favorite Songs Celebrating Ten Years of Music Ministry.......2002-11-18
A collection of 16 favorite songs celebrating ten years of Steve Green's music ministry. This two-time Dove Award male vocalist of the year is my all-time favorite Christian vocalist! He uses his wonderful God-given voice to glorify God through music. This album has a good selection of songs overall, especially for those who enjoy contemporary Christian music as well as hymns. I especially like this CD for it has a nice blend of contemporary music and the old-time classic favorites such as "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" (written by Martin Luther) and "I Know that My Redeemer Liveth" (by G. F. Handel).

The Full Blossom of Steve Green.......2005-12-22
The kid who came to everyone's attention with "He Holds The Keys" and did his best work on "The Mission" follows up his most lackluster performance with.....a mid-level output. But it is also clear from this recording that Green not only has grown up and is concerned that if it were his last recording what would he be proud of, the producer has gone back 'to the well' by opening the CD with the upbeat 'Sing Praise To God,' which gets you into the music immediately.
"True Christianity," while biblical in its message seems to undermine the message a bit with its toe-tapping upbeat rhythm. "The River" is one of five very deep and reflective songs that make this a mature work. It even ends with the trademark high note. "The Faithful" will make you contemplate the price true Christian martyrs pay for their faith.
"Under the altar their voices are crying, 'How long Lord 'til you come judge the earth?' But he'll wrap and redeem them in robes of pure white; for the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church."
"Safely Home" sounds like it was written in a funeral parlor although it is liberating for the Christian. "The Plan" is another "True Christianity" style rip-off that has a good message and beat and could probably function as a praise chorus.
"Roses" is a tragic tale of the abortion holocaust. There is no need to say much about it as its subject is rather obvious. But "I Repent" ranks as one of Green's most reverent as well as reflective songs. Though somber and walking in tone - as repentance should be - its message roars like thunder in the heart of the forgiven sinner.
Good but not great. Mature. Not for you if you want shallow music.
Songs of praise and devotion.......2005-09-25
The album opens with the magnificent To God All Praise And Glory, a rousing song with full orchestra and choir. The poignant Unto Me is next, a song that spells out in a practical way what the Christian life is all about. The slow rock ballad The River is followed by the stirring title track with its beautiful imagery of the martyrs under the throne.
Safely Home is a somewhat mournful but ultimately comforting ballad about those who have passed away, whilst The Plan is a catchy and uptempo number about daily living. The Great Revival is an uplifting song with great percussion and soulful gospel-style backing voices.
I Repent and Roses are both tender ballads, the first with only keyboards and percussion whilst the second is an achingly moving song about abortion and what it really means. The album concludes with My Soul Found Rest, another devotional ballad with full orchestral backing.
The Faithful is a comforting and inspiring album of memorable songs. The sound is a very successful integration of rock, orchestral and gospel styles. My favourites include the anthemic All Praise And Glory, the gripping Unto Me, the sad but comforting Safely Home and the song of repentance Roses.
The CD booklet contains all the lyrics, sometimes introduced by scriptural passages and quotes on issues of concern to Christians today, like the persecution of believers and the killing of the unborn.
Still Faithful.......2001-04-22
Having all of Steve Green's previous albums, I'm still a faithful Steve fan. He never fails to deliver superb performances. Though this may not be one of his great albums, I surely understand. Because this is an album with a deep mission. You will notice it from the songs "The Faithful", "The Great Revival" and "Unto Me".
At least this is an album made with a purpose. So, to those who sees it a bit serious, well it may be that way. Each songs delivers different issues relevant in our times. But hey, you can still enjoy it with some excerpts of praise-like and upbeat songs like "The Plan", "Unto Me" and "The Great Revival".
Among his 10 songs, the following 7 songs are my favourites (in order):
1st "The River" - one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard. A song of challenge to enter into the river and answer His call. This should have been the carrier song of the album.
2nd "Unto Me" - are we what we called a true Christian? An eye-opener message lovely performed in a pop, lively beat - wonderfully written by Twila Paris.
3rd "The Great Revival" - tune is a little different but joyful and praise-like. This is an African-inspired song composed by Kolade - a Nigerian missionary.
4th "Safely Home" - seems like a sad song for funerals but if you listen deeper, you'll find out it's a song of hope and promise. A promise that someday, all Christians are safely home with the Lord. Amen for that!
5th "My Soul Found Rest" - another assuring song for a weary and tired soul. Splendidly delivered by Steve with the London Session Orchestra. The song soothes my soul!
6th "The Plan" - an easy song that tell us to let the Lord lead our way and just follow and trust His direction. Cool song!
7th "To God All Praise and Glory" - here, Steve brings back the traditional hymn-like songs he used to sing. A great opening song!
I purchased this album in Singapore, when I was send there to work alone by my company. From a hard day's work with computers, playing the songs at night soothes and relaxes me. My soul found rest!
To Steve Green, continue serving the Lord through music. You have lots of fan here in the Philippines. You are also a number one fan of my brother!
* Check on the criteria on how I decide to select the stars for a certain album at my profile. I hope my review helps you a lot. Thanks.
One of Steve's best.......2000-04-28
Being a big Steve Green fan, I was a little disappointed with his last release, "The Letter." Though the songs were moving, all the music sounded the same. I was so happy to get a listen to this CD. This reminds me of the early Steve Green. He opens the album with a terrific song of praise, "To God all Praise and Glory." The Twila Paris penned, "Unto Me" is a challenging song about putting your faith into action. He doesn't disappoint with the ballads on this one. "The River" and "I Repent" call the listener to give yourself away to the Lord. "Safely Home" is a tear jerker that reminds us of lost loved ones and brings peace with the knowledge that they are with the Father.
Steve hit the bull's eye. The songs are contemporary and challenging. It is easy to lose yourself in the message of this CD.
This is music the way it should be.......1999-12-30
Steve Green is my absolute FAVORITE Christian artist, and this album embodies everything that he stands for. These songs are very powerful. They remind us about all of the things that we need to be aware about today in our world--things like persecution, abortion, sin, etc... These songs have a kind of modern feel that expresses not only beauty, but also urgency--an urgency to stand up for the faith. It is very encouraging to know that there is someone like Steve Green who is not sacrificing his integrity. These songs powerfully display his absolutely fantastic singing ability and the issues that we should all be praying for and considering.

A must have CD.......2007-02-28
We keep this CD in our car and listen to it often. It is full of great music, easy to sing along with. Without realizing it, my children have learned bible verses. Vol 1 is equally good.

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.
