Album Description
"Mississippi steamboating was born about 1812, at the end of thirty years it had grown to mighty proportions, and in less than thirty more, it was dead! A strangely short life for so majestic a creature. Of course, it is not absolutely dead, neither is a crippled octogenarian who could once jump twenty-two feet on level ground, but as contrasted with what it was in the prime vigor, Mississippi steamboating may be called dead" - Mark Twain, 'Life on the Mississippi' Fortunately, the music still survives. Travel back with us to a more simple time when cotton was king and life on the river was a never-ending adventure. So sit back, have a mint julep and enjoy this celebration of life on the Mighty Mississippi during the first half of the twentieth century.

Customer Reviews:
Great Players, Tame Results.......2002-06-27
Nothing wrong here, but it just doesn't add up to much. Lots of famous pianists who apparently had some off days, and a few minor figures I've not heard before. And including some unknown pieces here which deserve to remain unknown. Old recordings, with lots of surface noise; they just amble along until they're done. Not much fire, not much tension, not much pungency. Pleasant background music, but not really listenable. I was hoping to find some buried treasures, but mostly found sand. And if Track 11 (rather than 12) is St. Louis Blues, it is the most personal interpretation I've ever heard.

Album Description
"East is east and West is West, and never the twain shall meet." So it was said, and perhaps even believed, until the Jazz Age, when suddenly no old-fashioned cultural barrier was safe. Since the turn of the century, when the American empire first crossed the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii and the Phillipines, Americans had cast a fascinated eye toward the Orient. From a distance, its cities were run by gangsters, its countryside by warlords. Here was a land, like the old West, where fortunes cound be made and then lost in casinos that never closed. It was exotic, mysterious, and best of all, a bit wicked. These were the elements of jazz itself. Already blending African and European musical styles, American jazz musicians had little trouble adding yet another ingredient to the mix. Throughout the 1920's and 1930's, they capitalized on the country's fascination and topics to their music, until the reality of World War II brought an end to these "Oriental Illusions."

Customer Reviews:
Isham Jones is the Ugly George of the 1920s.......2004-04-09
The same things that Satchmo told me about reverse-racist Liberals still hold true today; such as Isham and Paul Whiteman were nothing and that the only "true jazz" is black (which would have surprised Nick LaRocca in 1916).Anyhoo, this will all soon be dispelled by the streaming of old/new pickups on www.uglygeorge.com and the selling of DVDs on (ahem) amazing amazon...
Not a bad start, but seems only half-full..........2000-10-19
This is a valuable CD which helps preserve some small part of the recorded legacy of Isham Jones, however much more could have fit on this one CD, and there unfortunately do not seem to be any plans to continue this project by Memphis Archives, as this was issued in 1995. Not to demean what this excellent small independent label has accomplished (with admirably non-interventionalist transfers), but this CD seems oddly incomplete, even as it spans the decade from the early '20s to the early '30s. But still, it's a shame that a more balanced picture of Jones' output was not achieved, with even a bit more representation of his jazzier numbers ("Cotton Pickers Ball" [my personal favorite, from 1923] and "Meadow Lark" come immediately to mind, with perhaps "I Just Wanna Be Known As Susie's Feller" thrown in, not to mention some of the more driving songs he recorded in the early-mid '30s that are presagers of swing).
But I don't expect Decca/MCA (which may or may not have the original masters from the Brunswick recordings; I read somewhere that most of these were destroyed or lost long ago) or BMG/RCA (which issued, to my knowledge, only one wonderful LP, 36 years ago, dedicated to his early '30s recordings) to remember this icon of the dance band era. So I guess the only alternative if one wants to hear more Isham Jones is to collect the 78s.
I suppose all this makes listening to "Swinging Down the Lane" a bittersweet experience...it's nice as far as it goes, but don't expect much more on CD. I would love to be wrong on that account, however!
Hot Musick Keeps Up With the Joneses.......2000-01-26
Starting with 1924's "I'll See You In My Dreams",Isham Jones had a solid stream of big-selling hits and was not too far behind Paul Whiteman on the sales charts. In spite of this, many Racist Liberals insist on lying in trying to make Jazz into a strictly black thing. When I met and photographed Satchmo, he told me the same thing. These selections are Very Good from Isham, but more is needed to complete the set;especially with Frank Silvano as the vocalist-or "Boy Singer",if the Lesbian/Feminists will allow that term...
